1.    Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bore him no children. She had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.     Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.     ושרי  אשת  אברם  לא

    VShUrY 'aShTh 'aBUrM L'a YLDH LV VLH ShPhChH MTShUrYTh VShMH HGUr.     And Sarai, Abram`s wife, hath not borne to him, and she hath an handmaid, an Egyptian, and her name is Hagar;     igitur Sarai uxor Abram non genuerat liberos sed habens ancillam aegyptiam nomine Agar
 
2.    Sarai said to Abram, "See now, Yahweh has restrained me from bearing. Please go in to my handmaid. It may be that I will obtain children by her." Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.     And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.     ותאמר  שרי  אל־אברם 
הנה־נא  עצרני  יהוה
מלדת  בא־נא
אל־שפחתי  אולי
אבנה  ממנה  וישמע
אברם  לקול  שרי׃
    VTh'aMUr ShUrY 'aL-'aBUrM HNH-N'a 'yTShUrNY YHVH MLDTh B'a-N'a 'aL-ShPhChThY 'aVLY 'aBNH MMNH VYShM'y 'aBUrM LQVL ShUrY.     and Sarai saith unto Abram, `Lo, I pray thee, Jehovah hath restrained me from bearing, go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; perhaps I am built up from her;` and Abram hearkeneth to the voice of Sarai.     dixit marito suo ecce conclusit me Dominus ne parerem ingredere ad ancillam meam si forte saltem ex illa suscipiam filios cumque ille adquiesceret deprecanti
 
3.    Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.     And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.     ותקח  שרי  אשת־אברם 
את־הגר  המצרית
שפחתה  מקץ  עשר
שנים  לשבת  אברם
בארץ  כנען  ותתן
אתה  לאברם  אישה  לו
לאשה׃
    VThQCh ShUrY 'aShTh-'aBUrM 'aTh-HGUr HMTShUrYTh ShPhChThH MQTSh 'yShUr ShNYM LShBTh 'aBUrM B'aUrTSh KN'yN VThThN 'aThH L'aBUrM 'aYShH LV L'aShH.     And Sarai, Abram`s wife, taketh Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, at the end of the tenth year of Abram`s dwelling in the land of Canaan, and giveth her to Abram her husband, to him for a wife,     tulit Agar Aegyptiam ancillam suam post annos decem quam habitare coeperant in terra Chanaan et dedit eam viro suo uxorem
 
4.    He went in to Hagar, and she conceived. When she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.     And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.     ויבא  אל־הגר  ותהר 
ותרא  כי  הרתה  ותקל
גברתה  בעיניה׃
    VYB'a 'aL-HGUr VThHUr VThUr'a KY HUrThH VThQL GBUrThH B'yYNYH.     and he goeth in unto Hagar, and she conceiveth, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and her mistress is lightly esteemed in her eyes.     qui ingressus est ad eam at illa concepisse se videns despexit dominam suam
 
5.    Sarai said to Abram, "This wrong is your fault. I gave my handmaid into your bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes. Yahweh judge between me and you."     And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.     ותאמר  שרי  אל־אברם 
חמסי  עליך  אנכי
נתתי  שפחתי  בחיקך
ותרא  כי  הרתה  ואקל
בעיניה  ישפט  יהוה
ביני  וביניך׃
    VTh'aMUr ShUrY 'aL-'aBUrM ChMSY 'yLYK 'aNKY NThThY ShPhChThY BChYQK VThUr'a KY HUrThH V'aQL B'yYNYH YShPhT YHVH BYNY VBYNYK.     And Sarai saith unto Abram, `My violence is for thee; I -- I have given mine handmaid into thy bosom, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and I am lightly esteemed in her eyes; Jehovah doth judge between me and thee.`     dixitque Sarai ad Abram inique agis contra me ego dedi ancillam meam in sinum tuum quae videns quod conceperit despectui me habet iudicet Dominus inter me et te
 
6.    But Abram said to Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your hand. Do to her whatever is good in your eyes." Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.     But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.     ויאמר  אברם  אל־שרי 
הנה  שפחתך  בידך
עשי־לה  הטוב
בעיניך  ותענה  שרי
ותברח  מפניה׃
    VY'aMUr 'aBUrM 'aL-ShUrY HNH ShPhChThK BYDK 'yShY-LH HTVB B'yYNYK VTh'yNH ShUrY VThBUrCh MPhNYH.     And Abram saith unto Sarai, `Lo, thine handmaid is in thine hand, do to her that which is good in thine eyes;` and Sarai afflicted her, and she fleeth from her presence.     cui respondens Abram ecce ait ancilla tua in manu tua est utere ea ut libet adfligente igitur eam Sarai fugam iniit
 
7.    The angel of Yahweh found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.     And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.     וימצאה  מלאך  יהוה 
על־עין  המים  במדבר
על־העין  בדרך  שור׃
    VYMTSh'aH ML'aK YHVH 'yL-'yYN HMYM BMDBUr 'yL-H'yYN BDUrK ShVUr.     And a messenger of Jehovah findeth her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur,     cumque invenisset illam angelus Domini iuxta fontem aquae in solitudine qui est in via Sur
 
8.    He said, "Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, where did you come from? Where are you going?" She said, "I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai."     And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.     ויאמר  הגר  שפחת 
שרי  אי־מזה  באת
ואנה  תלכי  ותאמר
מפני  שרי  גברתי
אנכי  ברחת׃
    VY'aMUr HGUr ShPhChTh ShUrY 'aY-MZH B'aTh V'aNH ThLKY VTh'aMUr MPhNY ShUrY GBUrThY 'aNKY BUrChTh.     and he saith, `Hagar, Sarai`s handmaid, whence hast thou come, and whither dost thou go?` and she saith, `From the presence of Sarai, my mistress, I am fleeing.`     dixit ad eam Agar ancilla Sarai unde venis et quo vadis quae respondit a facie Sarai dominae meae ego fugio
 
9.    The angel of Yahweh said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands."     And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.     ויאמר  לה  מלאך 
יהוה  שובי
אל־גברתך  והתעני
תחת  ידיה׃
    VY'aMUr LH ML'aK YHVH ShVBY 'aL-GBUrThK VHTh'yNY ThChTh YDYH.     And the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Turn back unto thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hands;`     dixitque ei angelus Domini revertere ad dominam tuam et humiliare sub manibus ipsius
 
10.    The angel of Yahweh said to her, "I will greatly multiply your seed, that they will not be numbered for multitude."     And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.     ויאמר  לה  מלאך 
יהוה  הרבה  ארבה
את־זרעך  ולא  יספר
מרב׃
    VY'aMUr LH ML'aK YHVH HUrBH 'aUrBH 'aTh-ZUr'yK VL'a YSPhUr MUrB.     and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Multiplying I multiply thy seed, and it is not numbered from multitude;`     et rursum multiplicans inquit multiplicabo semen tuum et non numerabitur prae multitudine
 
11.    The angel of Yahweh said to her, "Behold, you are with child, and will bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, because Yahweh has heard your affliction.     And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.     ויאמר  לה  מלאך 
יהוה  הנך  הרה
וילדת  בן  וקראת
שמו  ישמעאל  כי־שמע
יהוה  אל־עניך׃
    VY'aMUr LH ML'aK YHVH HNK HUrH VYLDTh BN VQUr'aTh ShMV YShM'y'aL KY-ShM'y YHVH 'aL-'yNYK.     and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Behold thou art conceiving, and bearing a son, and hast called his name Ishmael, for Jehovah hath hearkened unto thine affliction;     ac deinceps ecce ait concepisti et paries filium vocabisque nomen eius Ismahel eo quod audierit Dominus adflictionem tuam
 
12.    He will be like a wild donkey among men. His hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him. He will live opposite all of his brothers."     And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.     והוא  יהיה  פרא  אדם 
ידו  בכל  ויד  כל  בו
ועל־פני  כל־אחיו
ישכן׃
    VHV'a YHYH PhUr'a 'aDM YDV BKL VYD KL BV V'yL-PhNY KL-'aChYV YShKN.     and he is a wild-ass man, his hand against every one, and every one`s hand against him -- and before the face of all his brethren he dwelleth.`     hic erit ferus homo manus eius contra omnes et manus omnium contra eum et e regione universorum fratrum suorum figet tabernacula
 
13.    She called the name of Yahweh who spoke to her, "You are a God who sees," for she said, "Have I even stayed alive after seeing him?"     And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?     ותקרא  שם־יהוה 
הדבר  אליה  אתה  אל
ראי  כי  אמרה  הגם
הלם  ראיתי  אחרי
ראי׃
    VThQUr'a ShM-YHVH HDBUr 'aLYH 'aThH 'aL Ur'aY KY 'aMUrH HGM HLM Ur'aYThY 'aChUrY Ur'aY.     And she calleth the name of Jehovah who is speaking unto her, `Thou art, O God, my beholder;` for she said, `Even here have I looked behind my beholder?`     vocavit autem nomen Domini qui loquebatur ad eam Tu Deus qui vidisti me dixit enim profecto hic vidi posteriora videntis me
 
14.    Therefore the well was called Beer Lahai Roi.{Beer Lahai Roi means "well of the one who lives and sees me."} Behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.     Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.     על־כן  קרא  לבאר 
באר  לחי  ראי  הנה
בין־קדש  ובין  ברד׃
    'yL-KN QUr'a LB'aUr B'aUr LChY Ur'aY HNH BYN-QDSh VBYN BUrD.     therefore hath one called the well, `The well of the Living One, my beholder;` lo, between Kadesh and Bered.     propterea appellavit puteum illum puteum Viventis et videntis me ipse est inter Cades et Barad
 
15.    Hagar bore a son for Abram. Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.     And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.     ותלד  הגר  לאברם  בן 
ויקרא  אברם  שם־בנו
אשר־ילדה  הגר
ישמעאל׃
    VThLD HGUr L'aBUrM BN VYQUr'a 'aBUrM ShM-BNV 'aShUr-YLDH HGUr YShM'y'aL.     And Hagar beareth to Abram a son; and Abram calleth the name of his son, whom Hagar hath borne, Ishmael;     peperitque Abrae filium qui vocavit nomen eius Ismahel
 
16.    Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.     And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.     ואברם  בן־שמנים 
שנה  ושש  שנים
בלדת־הגר
את־ישמעאל  לאברם׃
    V'aBUrM BN-ShMNYM ShNH VShSh ShNYM BLDTh-HGUr 'aTh-YShM'y'aL L'aBUrM.     and Abram is a son of eighty and six years in Hagar`s bearing Ishmael to Abram.     octoginta et sex annorum erat quando peperit ei Agar Ismahelem
