1.    Yahweh visited Sarah as he had said, and Yahweh did to Sarah as he had spoken.     And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken.     ויהוה  פקד  את־שרה

    VYHVH PhQD 'aTh-ShUrH K'aShUr 'aMUr VY'ySh YHVH LShUrH K'aShUr DBUr.     And Jehovah hath looked after Sarah as He hath said, and Jehovah doth to Sarah as He hath spoken;     visitavit autem Dominus Sarram sicut promiserat et implevit quae locutus est
 
2.    Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.     For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.     ותהר  ותלד  שרה

    VThHUr VThLD ShUrH L'aBUrHM BN LZQNYV LMV'yD 'aShUr-DBUr 'aThV 'aLHYM.     and Sarah conceiveth, and beareth a son to Abraham, to his old age, at the appointed time that God hath spoken of with him;     concepitque et peperit filium in senectute sua tempore quo praedixerat ei Deus
 
3.    Abraham called his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.{Isaac means "He laughs."}     And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac.     ויקרא  אברהם 
את־שם־בנו
הנולד־לו
אשר־ילדה־לו  שרה
יצחק׃
    VYQUr'a 'aBUrHM 'aTh-ShM-BNV HNVLD-LV 'aShUr-YLDH-LV ShUrH YTShChQ.     and Abraham calleth the name of his son who is born to him, whom Sarah hath born to him -- Isaac;     vocavitque Abraham nomen filii sui quem genuit ei Sarra Isaac
 
4.    Abraham circumcised his son, Isaac, when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.     And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him.     וימל  אברהם 
את־יצחק  בנו
בן־שמנת  ימים  כאשר
צוה  אתו  אלהים׃
    VYML 'aBUrHM 'aTh-YTShChQ BNV BN-ShMNTh YMYM K'aShUr TShVH 'aThV 'aLHYM.     and Abraham circumciseth Isaac his son, being a son of eight days, as God hath commanded him.     et circumcidit eum octavo die sicut praeceperat ei Deus
 
5.    Abraham was one hundred years old when his son, Isaac, was born to him.     And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.     ואברהם  בן־מאת  שנה 
בהולד  לו  את  יצחק
בנו׃
    V'aBUrHM BN-M'aTh ShNH BHVLD LV 'aTh YTShChQ BNV.     And Abraham is a son of a hundred years in Isaac his son being born to him,     cum centum esset annorum hac quippe aetate patris natus est Isaac
 
6.    Sarah said, "God has made me laugh. Everyone who hears will laugh with me."     And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me.     ותאמר  שרה  צחק  עשה 
לי  אלהים  כל־השמע
יצחק־לי׃
    VTh'aMUr ShUrH TShChQ 'yShH LY 'aLHYM KL-HShM'y YTShChQ-LY.     and Sarah saith, `God hath made laughter for me; every one who is hearing laugheth for me.`     dixitque Sarra risum fecit mihi Deus quicumque audierit conridebit mihi
 
7.    She said, "Who would have said to Abraham, that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age."     And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age.     ותאמר  מי  מלל 
לאברהם  היניקה
בנים  שרה  כי־ילדתי
בן  לזקניו׃
    VTh'aMUr MY MLL L'aBUrHM HYNYQH BNYM ShUrH KY-YLDThY BN LZQNYV.     She saith also, `Who hath said to Abraham, Sarah hath suckled sons, that I have born a son for his old age?`     rursumque ait quis auditurum crederet Abraham quod Sarra lactaret filium quem peperit ei iam seni
 
8.    The child grew, and was weaned. Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.     And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned.     ויגדל  הילד  ויגמל 
ויעש  אברהם  משתה
גדול  ביום  הגמל
את־יצחק׃
    VYGDL HYLD VYGML VY'ySh 'aBUrHM MShThH GDVL BYVM HGML 'aTh-YTShChQ.     And the lad groweth, and is weaned, and Abraham maketh a great banquet in the day of Isaac`s being weaned;     crevit igitur puer et ablactatus est fecitque Abraham grande convivium in die ablactationis eius
 
9.    Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking.     And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.     ותרא  שרה 
את־בן־הגר  המצרית
אשר־ילדה  לאברהם
מצחק׃
    VThUr'a ShUrH 'aTh-BN-HGUr HMTShUrYTh 'aShUr-YLDH L'aBUrHM MTShChQ.     and Sarah seeth the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she hath borne to Abraham, mocking,     cumque vidisset Sarra filium Agar Aegyptiae ludentem dixit ad Abraham
 
10.    Therefore she said to Abraham, "Cast out this handmaid and her son! For the son of this handmaid will not be heir with my son, Isaac."     Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.     ותאמר  לאברהם  גרש 
האמה  הזאת  ואת־בנה
כי  לא  יירש
בן־האמה  הזאת
עם־בני  עם־יצחק׃
    VTh'aMUr L'aBUrHM GUrSh H'aMH HZ'aTh V'aTh-BNH KY L'a YYUrSh BN-H'aMH HZ'aTh 'yM-BNY 'yM-YTShChQ.     and she saith to Abraham, `Cast out this handmaid and her son; for the son of this handmaid hath no possession with my son -- with Isaac.`     eice ancillam hanc et filium eius non enim erit heres filius ancillae cum filio meo Isaac
 
11.    The thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight on account of his son.     And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son.     וירע  הדבר  מאד 
בעיני  אברהם  על
אודת  בנו׃
    VYUr'y HDBUr M'aD B'yYNY 'aBUrHM 'yL 'aVDTh BNV.     And the thing is very wrong in the eyes of Abraham, for his son`s sake;     dure accepit hoc Abraham pro filio suo
 
12.    God said to Abraham, "Don't let it be grievous in your sight because of the boy, and because of your handmaid. In all that Sarah says to you, listen to her voice. For from Isaac will your seed be called.     And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.     ויאמר  אלהים 
אל־אברהם  אל־ירע
בעיניך  על־הנער
ועל־אמתך  כל  אשר
תאמר  אליך  שרה  שמע
בקלה  כי  ביצחק
יקרא  לך  זרע׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLHYM 'aL-'aBUrHM 'aL-YUr'y B'yYNYK 'yL-HN'yUr V'yL-'aMThK KL 'aShUr Th'aMUr 'aLYK ShUrH ShM'y BQLH KY BYTShChQ YQUr'a LK ZUr'y.     and God saith unto Abraham, `Let it not be wrong in thine eyes because of the youth, and because of thy handmaid: all that Sarah saith unto thee -- hearken to her voice, for in Isaac is a seed called to thee.     cui dixit Deus non tibi videatur asperum super puero et super ancilla tua omnia quae dixerit tibi Sarra audi vocem eius quia in Isaac vocabitur tibi semen
 
13.    I will also make a nation of the son of the handmaid, because he is your seed."     And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.     וגם  את־בן־האמה 
לגוי  אשימנו  כי
זרעך  הוא׃
    VGM 'aTh-BN-H'aMH LGVY 'aShYMNV KY ZUr'yK HV'a.     As to the son of the handmaid also, for a nation I set him, because he is thy seed.`     sed et filium ancillae faciam in gentem magnam quia semen tuum est
 
14.    Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder; and gave her the child, and sent her away. She departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.     And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.     וישכם  אברהם  בבקר

    VYShKM 'aBUrHM BBQUr VYQCh-LChM VChMTh MYM VYThN 'aL-HGUr ShM 'yL-ShKMH V'aTh-HYLD VYShLChH VThLK VThTh'y BMDBUr B'aUr ShB'y.     And Abraham riseth early in the morning, and taketh bread, and a bottle of water, and giveth unto Hagar (placing it on her shoulder), also the lad, and sendeth her out; and she goeth on, and goeth astray in the wilderness of Beer-Sheba;     surrexit itaque Abraham mane et tollens panem et utrem aquae inposuit scapulae eius tradiditque puerum et dimisit eam quae cum abisset errabat in solitudine Bersabee
 
15.    The water in the bottle was spent, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.     And the water was spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.     ויכלו  המים 
מן־החמת  ותשלך

    VYKLV HMYM MN-HChMTh VThShLK 'aTh-HYLD ThChTh 'aChD HShYChM.     and the water is consumed from the bottle, and she placeth the lad under one of the shrubs.     cumque consumpta esset aqua in utre abiecit puerum subter unam arborum quae ibi erant
 
16.    She went and sat down opposite him, a good way off, about a bow shot away. For she said, "Don't let me see the death of the child." She sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept.     And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept.     ותלך  ותשב  לה  מנגד 
הרחק  כמטחוי  קשת
כי  אמרה  אל־אראה
במות  הילד  ותשב
מנגד  ותשא  את־קלה
ותבך׃
    VThLK VThShB LH MNGD HUrChQ KMTChVY QShTh KY 'aMUrH 'aL-'aUr'aH BMVTh HYLD VThShB MNGD VThSh'a 'aTh-QLH VThBK.     And she goeth and sitteth by herself over-against, afar off, about a bow-shot, for she said, `Let me not look on the death of the lad;` and she sitteth over-against, and lifteth up her voice, and weepeth.     et abiit seditque e regione procul quantum potest arcus iacere dixit enim non videbo morientem puerum et sedens contra levavit vocem suam et flevit
 
17.    God heard the voice of the boy. The angel of God called to Hagar out of the sky, and said to her, "What ails you, Hagar? Don't be afraid. For God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.     And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.     וישמע  אלהים 
את־קול  הנער  ויקרא
מלאך  אלהים  אל־הגר
מן־השמים  ויאמר  לה
מה־לך  הגר
אל־תיראי  כי־שמע
אלהים  אל־קול  הנער
באשר  הוא־  שם׃
    VYShM'y 'aLHYM 'aTh-QVL HN'yUr VYQUr'a ML'aK 'aLHYM 'aL-HGUr MN-HShMYM VY'aMUr LH MH-LK HGUr 'aL-ThYUr'aY KY-ShM'y 'aLHYM 'aL-QVL HN'yUr B'aShUr HV'a- ShM.     And God heareth the voice of the youth; and the messenger of God calleth unto Hagar from the heavens, and saith to her, `What to thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath hearkened unto the voice of the youth where he is;     exaudivit autem Deus vocem pueri vocavitque angelus Domini Agar de caelo dicens quid agis Agar noli timere exaudivit enim Deus vocem pueri de loco in quo est
 
18.    Get up, lift up the boy, and hold him in your hand. For I will make him a great nation."     Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.     קומי  שאי  את־הנער 
והחזיקי  את־ידך  בו
כי־לגוי  גדול
אשימנו׃
    QVMY Sh'aY 'aTh-HN'yUr VHChZYQY 'aTh-YDK BV KY-LGVY GDVL 'aShYMNV.     rise, lift up the youth, and lay hold on him with thy hand, for for a great nation I set him.`     surge tolle puerum et tene manum illius quia in gentem magnam faciam eum
 
19.    God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. She went, filled the bottle with water, and gave the boy drink.     And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.     ויפקח  אלהים 
את־עיניה  ותרא  באר
מים  ותלך  ותמלא
את־החמת  מים  ותשק
את־הנער׃
    VYPhQCh 'aLHYM 'aTh-'yYNYH VThUr'a B'aUr MYM VThLK VThML'a 'aTh-HChMTh MYM VThShQ 'aTh-HN'yUr.     And God openeth her eyes, and she seeth a well of water, and she goeth and filleth the bottle with water, and causeth the youth to drink;     aperuitque oculos eius Deus quae videns puteum aquae abiit et implevit utrem deditque puero bibere
 
20.    God was with the boy, and he grew. He lived in the wilderness, and became, as he grew up, an archer.     And God was with the lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.     ויהי  אלהים 
את־הנער  ויגדל
וישב  במדבר  ויהי
רבה  קשת׃
    VYHY 'aLHYM 'aTh-HN'yUr VYGDL VYShB BMDBUr VYHY UrBH QShTh.     and God is with the youth, and he groweth, and dwelleth in the wilderness, and is an archer;     et fuit cum eo qui crevit et moratus est in solitudine et factus est iuvenis sagittarius
 
21.    He lived in the wilderness of Paran. His mother took a wife for him out of the land of Egypt.     And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran: and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.     וישב  במדבר  פארן 
ותקח־לו  אמו  אשה
מארץ  מצרים׃
    VYShB BMDBUr Ph'aUrN VThQCh-LV 'aMV 'aShH M'aUrTSh MTShUrYM.     and he dwelleth in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother taketh for him a wife from the land of Egypt.     habitavitque in deserto Pharan et accepit illi mater sua uxorem de terra Aegypti
 
22.    It happened at that time, that Abimelech and Phicol the captain of his army spoke to Abraham, saying, "God is with you in all that you do.     And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest:     ויהי  בעת  ההוא 
ויאמר  אבימלך
ופיכל  שר־צבאו
אל־אברהם  לאמר
אלהים  עמך  בכל
אשר־אתה  עשה׃
    VYHY B'yTh HHV'a VY'aMUr 'aBYMLK VPhYKL ShUr-TShB'aV 'aL-'aBUrHM L'aMUr 'aLHYM 'yMK BKL 'aShUr-'aThH 'yShH.     And it cometh to pass at that time that Abimelech speaketh -- Phichol also, head of his host -- unto Abraham, saying, `God is with thee in all that thou art doing;     eodem tempore dixit Abimelech et Fichol princeps exercitus eius ad Abraham Deus tecum est in universis quae agis
 
23.    Now, therefore, swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son. But according to the kindness that I have done to you, you shall do to me, and to the land in which you have lived as a foreigner."     Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned.     ועתה  השבעה  לי 
באלהים  הנה
אם־תשקר  לי  ולניני
ולנכדי  כחסד  אשר־
עשיתי  עמך  תעשה
עמדי  ועם־הארץ
אשר־גרתה  בה׃
    V'yThH HShB'yH LY B'aLHYM HNH 'aM-ThShQUr LY VLNYNY VLNKDY KChSD 'aShUr- 'yShYThY 'yMK Th'yShH 'yMDY V'yM-H'aUrTSh 'aShUr-GUrThH BH.     and now, swear to me by God here: thou dost not lie to me, or to my continuator, or to my successor; according to the kindness which I have done with thee thou dost with me, and with the land in which thou hast sojourned.`     iura ergo per Dominum ne noceas mihi et posteris meis stirpique meae sed iuxta misericordiam quam feci tibi facies mihi et terrae in qua versatus es advena
 
24.    Abraham said, "I will swear."     And Abraham said, I will swear.     ויאמר  אברהם  אנכי 
אשבע׃
    VY'aMUr 'aBUrHM 'aNKY 'aShB'y.     And Abraham saith, `I -- I do swear.`     dixitque Abraham ego iurabo
 
25.    Abraham complained to Abimelech because of a water well, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away.     And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of a well of water, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away.     והוכח  אברהם 
את־אבימלך  על־אדות
באר  המים  אשר  גזלו
עבדי  אבימלך׃
    VHVKCh 'aBUrHM 'aTh-'aBYMLK 'yL-'aDVTh B'aUr HMYM 'aShUr GZLV 'yBDY 'aBYMLK.     And Abraham reasoned with Abimelech concerning the matter of a well of water which Abimelech`s servants have taken violently away,     et increpavit Abimelech propter puteum aquae quem vi abstulerant servi illius
 
26.    Abimelech said, "I don't know who has done this thing. Neither did you tell me, neither did I hear of it, until today."     And Abimelech said, I wot not who hath done this thing: neither didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to day.     ויאמר  אבימלך  לא 
ידעתי  מי  עשה
את־הדבר  הזה
וגם־אתה  לא־הגדת
לי  וגם  אנכי  לא
שמעתי  בלתי  היום׃
    VY'aMUr 'aBYMLK L'a YD'yThY MY 'yShH 'aTh-HDBUr HZH VGM-'aThH L'a-HGDTh LY VGM 'aNKY L'a ShM'yThY BLThY HYVM.     and Abimelech saith, `I have not known who hath done this thing, and even thou didst not declare to me, and I also, I have not heard save to-day.`     respondit Abimelech nescivi quis fecerit hanc rem sed et tu non indicasti mihi et ego non audivi praeter hodie
 
27.    Abraham took sheep and cattle, and gave them to Abimelech. Those two made a covenant.     And Abraham took sheep and oxen, and gave them unto Abimelech; and both of them made a covenant.     ויקח  אברהם  צאן 
ובקר  ויתן  לאבימלך
ויכרתו  שניהם
ברית׃
    VYQCh 'aBUrHM TSh'aN VBQUr VYThN L'aBYMLK VYKUrThV ShNYHM BUrYTh.     And Abraham taketh sheep and oxen, and giveth to Abimelech, and they make, both of them, a covenant;     tulit itaque Abraham oves et boves et dedit Abimelech percusseruntque ambo foedus
 
28.    Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.     And Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.     ויצב  אברהם  את־שבע 
כבשת  הצאן  לבדהן׃
    VYTShB 'aBUrHM 'aTh-ShB'y KBShTh HTSh'aN LBDHN.     and Abraham setteth seven Lambs of the flock by themselves.     et statuit Abraham septem agnas gregis seorsum
 
29.    Abimelech said to Abraham, "What do these seven ewe lambs which you have set by themselves mean?"     And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves?     ויאמר  אבימלך 
אל־אברהם  מה  הנה
שבע  כבשת  האלה  אשר
הצבת  לבדנה׃
    VY'aMUr 'aBYMLK 'aL-'aBUrHM MH HNH ShB'y KBShTh H'aLH 'aShUr HTShBTh LBDNH.     And Abimelech saith unto Abraham, `What are they -- these seven lambs which thou hast set by themselves?`     cui dixit Abimelech quid sibi volunt septem agnae istae quas stare fecisti seorsum
 
30.    He said, "You shall take these seven ewe lambs from my hand, that it may be a witness to me, that I have dug this well."     And he said, For these seven ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have digged this well.     ויאמר  כי  את־שבע 
כבשת  תקח  מידי
בעבור  תהיה־לי
לעדה  כי  חפרתי  את־
הבאר  הזאת׃
    VY'aMUr KY 'aTh-ShB'y KBShTh ThQCh MYDY B'yBVUr ThHYH-LY L'yDH KY ChPhUrThY 'aTh- HB'aUr HZ'aTh.     And he saith, `For -- the seven lambs thou dost accept from my hand, so that it becometh a witness for me that I have digged this well;`     at ille septem inquit agnas accipies de manu mea ut sint in testimonium mihi quoniam ego fodi puteum istum
 
31.    Therefore he called that place Beersheba,{Beersheba can mean "well of the oath" or "well of seven."} because they both swore there.     Wherefore he called that place Beersheba; because there they sware both of them.     על־כן  קרא  למקום 
ההוא  באר  שבע  כי
שם  נשבעו  שניהם׃
    'yL-KN QUr'a LMQVM HHV'a B'aUr ShB'y KY ShM NShB'yV ShNYHM.     therefore hath he called that place `Beer-Sheba,` for there have both of them sworn.     idcirco vocatus est locus ille Bersabee quia ibi uterque iuraverunt
 
32.    So they made a covenant at Beersheba. Abimelech rose up with Phicol, the captain of his army, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.     Thus they made a covenant at Beersheba: then Abimelech rose up, and Phichol the chief captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines.     ויכרתו  ברית  בבאר 
שבע  ויקם  אבימלך
ופיכל  שר־צבאו
וישבו  אל־ארץ
פלשתים׃
    VYKUrThV BUrYTh BB'aUr ShB'y VYQM 'aBYMLK VPhYKL ShUr-TShB'aV VYShBV 'aL-'aUrTSh PhLShThYM.     And they make a covenant in Beer-Sheba, and Abimelech riseth -- Phichol also, head of his host -- and they turn back unto the land of the Philistines;     et inierunt foedus pro puteo Iuramenti
 
33.    Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and called there on the name of Yahweh, the Everlasting God.     And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.     ויטע  אשל  בבאר  שבע 
ויקרא־שם  בשם  יהוה
אל  עולם׃
    VYT'y 'aShL BB'aUr ShB'y VYQUr'a-ShM BShM YHVH 'aL 'yVLM.     and Abraham planteth a tamarask in Beer-Sheba, and preacheth there in the name of Jehovah, God age-during;     surrexit autem Abimelech et Fichol princeps militiae eius reversique sunt in terram Palestinorum Abraham vero plantavit nemus in Bersabee et invocavit ibi nomen Domini Dei aeterni
 
34.    Abraham lived as a foreigner in the land of the Philistines many days.     And Abraham sojourned in the Philistines' land many days.     ויגר  אברהם  בארץ 
פלשתים  ימים  רבים׃
    VYGUr 'aBUrHM B'aUrTSh PhLShThYM YMYM UrBYM.     and Abraham sojourneth in the land of the Philistines many days.     et fuit colonus terrae Philisthinorum diebus multis
