1.    Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.     And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.     ויעקב  הלך  לדרכו

    VY'yQB HLK LDUrKV VYPhG'yV-BV ML'aKY 'aLHYM.     And Jacob hath gone on his way, and messengers of God come upon him;     Iacob quoque abiit itinere quo coeperat fueruntque ei obviam angeli Dei
 
2.    When he saw them, Jacob said, "This is God's army." He called the name of that place Mahanaim.     And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.     ויאמר  יעקב  כאשר 
ראם  מחנה  אלהים  זה
ויקרא  שם־המקום
ההוא  מחנים׃
    VY'aMUr Y'yQB K'aShUr Ur'aM MChNH 'aLHYM ZH VYQUr'a ShM-HMQVM HHV'a MChNYM.     and Jacob saith, when he hath seen them, `This is the camp of God;` and he calleth the name of that place `Two Camps.`     quos cum vidisset ait castra Dei sunt haec et appellavit nomen loci illius Manaim id est Castra
 
3.    Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.     And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.     וישלח  יעקב  מלאכים 
לפניו  אל־עשו  אחיו
ארצה  שעיר  שדה
אדום׃
    VYShLCh Y'yQB ML'aKYM LPhNYV 'aL-'yShV 'aChYV 'aUrTShH Sh'yYUr ShDH 'aDVM.     And Jacob sendeth messengers before him unto Esau his brother, towards the land of Seir, the field of Edom,     misit autem et nuntios ante se ad Esau fratrem suum in terram Seir regionis Edom
 
4.    He commanded them, saying, "This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: 'This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.     And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:     ויצו  אתם  לאמר  כה 
תאמרון  לאדני  לעשו
כה  אמר  עבדך  יעקב
עם־לבן  גרתי  ואחר
עד־עתה׃
    VYTShV 'aThM L'aMUr KH Th'aMUrVN L'aDNY L'yShV KH 'aMUr 'yBDK Y'yQB 'yM-LBN GUrThY V'aChUr 'yD-'yThH.     and commandeth them, saying, `Thus do ye say to my lord, to Esau: Thus said thy servant Jacob, With Laban I have sojourned, and I tarry until now;     praecepitque eis dicens sic loquimini domino meo Esau haec dicit frater tuus Iacob apud Laban peregrinatus sum et fui usque in praesentem diem
 
5.    I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.'"     And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.     ויהי־לי  שור  וחמור 
צאן  ועבד  ושפחה
ואשלחה  להגיד
לאדני  למצא־חן
בעיניך׃
    VYHY-LY ShVUr VChMVUr TSh'aN V'yBD VShPhChH V'aShLChH LHGYD L'aDNY LMTSh'a-ChN B'yYNYK.     and I have ox, and ass, flock, and man-servant, and maid-servant, and I send to declare to my lord, to find grace in his eyes.`     habeo boves et asinos oves et servos atque ancillas mittoque nunc legationem ad dominum meum ut inveniam gratiam in conspectu tuo
 
6.    The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau. Not only that, but he comes to meet you, and four hundred men with him."     And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.     וישבו  המלאכים 
אל־יעקב  לאמר  באנו
אל־אחיך  אל־עשו
וגם  הלך  לקראתך
וארבע־מאות  איש
עמו׃
    VYShBV HML'aKYM 'aL-Y'yQB L'aMUr B'aNV 'aL-'aChYK 'aL-'yShV VGM HLK LQUr'aThK V'aUrB'y-M'aVTh 'aYSh 'yMV.     And the messengers turn back unto Jacob, saying, `We came in unto thy brother, unto Esau, and he also is coming to meet thee, and four hundred men with him;`     reversi sunt nuntii ad Iacob dicentes venimus ad Esau fratrem tuum et ecce properat in occursum tibi cum quadringentis viris
 
7.    Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two companies;     Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;     ויירא  יעקב  מאד 
ויצר  לו  ויחץ
את־העם  אשר־אתו
ואת־הצאן  ואת־הבקר
והגמלים  לשני
מחנות׃
    VYYUr'a Y'yQB M'aD VYTShUr LV VYChTSh 'aTh-H'yM 'aShUr-'aThV V'aTh-HTSh'aN V'aTh-HBQUr VHGMLYM LShNY MChNVTh.     and Jacob feareth exceedingly, and is distressed, and he divideth the people who are with him, and the flock, and the herd, and the camels, into two camps,     timuit Iacob valde et perterritus divisit populum qui secum erat greges quoque et oves et boves et camelos in duas turmas
 
8.    and he said, "If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape."     And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.     ויאמר  אם־יבוא  עשו 
אל־המחנה  האחת
והכהו  והיה  המחנה
הנשאר  לפליטה׃
    VY'aMUr 'aM-YBV'a 'yShV 'aL-HMChNH H'aChTh VHKHV VHYH HMChNH HNSh'aUr LPhLYTH.     and saith, `If Esau come in unto the one camp, and have smitten it -- then the camp which is left hath been for an escape.`     dicens si venerit Esau ad unam turmam et percusserit eam alia turma quae reliqua est salvabitur
 
9.    Jacob said, "God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh, who said to me, 'Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,'     And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:     ויאמר  יעקב  אלהי 
אבי  אברהם  ואלהי
אבי  יצחק  יהוה
האמר  אלי  שוב
לארצך  ולמולדתך
ואיטיבה  עמך׃
    VY'aMUr Y'yQB 'aLHY 'aBY 'aBUrHM V'aLHY 'aBY YTShChQ YHVH H'aMUr 'aLY ShVB L'aUrTShK VLMVLDThK V'aYTYBH 'yMK.     And Jacob saith, `God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Jehovah who saith unto me, Turn back to thy land, and to thy kindred, and I do good with thee:     dixitque Iacob Deus patris mei Abraham et Deus patris mei Isaac Domine qui dixisti mihi revertere in terram tuam et in locum nativitatis tuae et benefaciam tibi
 
10.    I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.     I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.     קטנתי  מכל  החסדים

עשית  את־עבדך  כי

את־הירדן  הזה  ועתה
הייתי  לשני  מחנות׃
    QTNThY MKL HChSDYM VMKL-H'aMTh 'aShUr 'yShYTh 'aTh-'yBDK KY BMQLY 'yBUrThY 'aTh-HYUrDN HZH V'yThH HYYThY LShNY MChNVTh.     I have been unworthy of all the kind acts, and of all the truth which Thou hast done with thy servant -- for, with my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.     minor sum cunctis miserationibus et veritate quam explesti servo tuo in baculo meo transivi Iordanem istum et nunc cum duabus turmis regredior
 
11.    Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he come and strike me, and the mothers with the children.     Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.     הצילני  נא  מיד  אחי 
מיד  עשו  כי־ירא
אנכי  אתו  פן־יבוא
והכני  אם  על־בנים׃
    HTShYLNY N'a MYD 'aChY MYD 'yShV KY-YUr'a 'aNKY 'aThV PhN-YBV'a VHKNY 'aM 'yL-BNYM.     `Deliver me, I pray Thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I am fearing him, less he come and have smitten me -- mother beside sons;     erue me de manu fratris mei de manu Esau quia valde eum timeo ne forte veniens percutiat matrem cum filiis
 
12.    You said, 'I will surely do you good, and make your seed as the sand of the sea, which can't be numbered because there are so many.'"     And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.     ואתה  אמרת  היטב 
איטיב  עמך  ושמתי
את־זרעך  כחול  הים
אשר  לא־יספר  מרב׃
    V'aThH 'aMUrTh HYTB 'aYTYB 'yMK VShMThY 'aTh-ZUr'yK KChVL HYM 'aShUr L'a-YSPhUr MUrB.     and Thou -- Thou hast said, I certainly do good with thee, and have set thy seed as the sand of the sea, which is not numbered because of the multitude.`     tu locutus es quod bene mihi faceres et dilatares semen meum sicut harenam maris quae prae multitudine numerari non potest
 
13.    He lodged there that night, and took from that which he had with him, a present for Esau, his brother:     And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;     וילן  שם  בלילה 
ההוא  ויקח  מן־הבא
בידו  מנחה  לעשו
אחיו׃
    VYLN ShM BLYLH HHV'a VYQCh MN-HB'a BYDV MNChH L'yShV 'aChYV.     And he lodgeth there during that night, and taketh from that which is coming into his hand, a present for Esau his brother:     cumque dormisset ibi nocte illa separavit de his quae habebat munera Esau fratri suo
 
14.    two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,     Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,     עזים  מאתים  ותישים

15.    thirty milk camels and their colts, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.     Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.     גמלים  מיניקות

    GMLYM MYNYQVTh VBNYHM ShLShYM PhUrVTh 'aUrB'yYM VPhUrYM 'yShUrH 'aThNTh 'yShUrYM V'yYUrM 'yShUrH.     suckling camels and their young ones thirty, cows forty, and bullocks ten, she-asses twenty, and foals ten;     camelos fetas cum pullis suis triginta vaccas quadraginta et tauros viginti asinas viginti et pullos earum decem
 
16.    He delivered them into the hands of his servants, every herd by itself, and said to his servants, "Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd."     And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.     ויתן  ביד־עבדיו 
עדר  עדר  לבדו
ויאמר  אל־עבדיו
עברו  לפני  ורוח
תשימו  בין  עדר
ובין  עדר׃
    VYThN BYD-'yBDYV 'yDUr 'yDUr LBDV VY'aMUr 'aL-'yBDYV 'yBUrV LPhNY VUrVCh ThShYMV BYN 'yDUr VBYN 'yDUr.     and he giveth into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and saith unto his servants, `Pass over before me, and a space ye do put between drove and drove.`     et misit per manus servorum suorum singulos seorsum greges dixitque pueris suis antecedite me et sit spatium inter gregem et gregem
 
17.    He commanded the foremost, saying, "When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, 'Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?'     And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?     ויצו  את־הראשון 
לאמר  כי  יפגשך  עשו
אחי  ושאלך  לאמר
למי־אתה  ואנה  תלך
ולמי  אלה  לפניך׃
    VYTShV 'aTh-HUr'aShVN L'aMUr KY YPhGShK 'yShV 'aChY VSh'aLK L'aMUr LMY-'aThH V'aNH ThLK VLMY 'aLH LPhNYK.     And he commandeth the first, saying, `When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and hath asked thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?     et praecepit priori dicens si obvium habueris Esau fratrem meum et interrogaverit te cuius es et quo vadis et cuius sunt ista quae sequeris
 
18.    Then you shall say, 'They are your servant, Jacob's. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.'"     Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.     ואמרת  לעבדך  ליעקב

    V'aMUrTh L'yBDK LY'yQB MNChH HV'a ShLVChH L'aDNY L'yShV VHNH GM-HV'a 'aChUrYNV.     then thou hast said, Thy servant Jacob`s: it is a present sent to my lord, to Esau; and lo, he also is behind us.`     respondebis servi tui Iacob munera misit domino meo Esau ipse quoque post nos venit
 
19.    He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, "This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.     And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.     ויצו  גם  את־השני 
גם  את־השלישי  גם
את־כל־ההלכים  אחרי
העדרים  לאמר  כדבר
הזה  תדברון  אל־עשו
במצאכם  אתו׃
    VYTShV GM 'aTh-HShNY GM 'aTh-HShLYShY GM 'aTh-KL-HHLKYM 'aChUrY H'yDUrYM L'aMUr KDBUr HZH ThDBUrVN 'aL-'yShV BMTSh'aKM 'aThV.     And he commandeth also the second, also the third, also all who are going after the droves, saying, `According to this manner do ye speak unto Esau in your finding him,     similiter mandata dedit secundo ac tertio et cunctis qui sequebantur greges dicens hisdem verbis loquimini ad Esau cum inveneritis eum
 
20.    You shall say, 'Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.'" For, he said, "I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me."     And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.     ואמרתם  גם  הנה 
עבדך  יעקב  אחרינו
כי־אמר  אכפרה  פניו
במנחה  ההלכת  לפני
ואחרי־כן  אראה
פניו  אולי  ישא

    V'aMUrThM GM HNH 'yBDK Y'yQB 'aChUrYNV KY-'aMUr 'aKPhUrH PhNYV BMNChH HHLKTh LPhNY V'aChUrY-KN 'aUr'aH PhNYV 'aVLY YSh'a PhNY.     and ye have said also, Lo, thy servant Jacob is behind us;` for he said, `I pacify his face with the present which is going before me, and afterwards I see his face; it may be he lifteth up my face;`     et addetis ipse quoque servus tuus Iacob iter nostrum insequitur dixit enim placabo illum muneribus quae praecedunt et postea videbo forsitan propitiabitur mihi
 
21.    So the present passed over before him, and he himself lodged that night in the camp.     So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.     ותעבר  המנחה 
על־פניו  והוא  לן
בלילה־ההוא  במחנה׃
    VTh'yBUr HMNChH 'yL-PhNYV VHV'a LN BLYLH-HHV'a BMChNH.     and the present passeth over before his face, and he hath lodged during that night in the camp.     praecesserunt itaque munera ante eum ipse vero mansit nocte illa in Castris
 
22.    He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two handmaids, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of the Jabbok.     And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.     ויקם  בלילה  הוא 
ויקח  את־שתי  נשיו
ואת־שתי  שפחתיו
ואת־אחד  עשר  ילדיו
ויעבר  את  מעבר
יבק׃
    VYQM BLYLH HV'a VYQCh 'aTh-ShThY NShYV V'aTh-ShThY ShPhChThYV V'aTh-'aChD 'yShUr YLDYV VY'yBUr 'aTh M'yBUr YBQ.     And he riseth in that night, and taketh his two wives, and his two maid-servants, and his eleven children, and passeth over the passage of Jabbok;     cumque mature surrexisset tulit duas uxores suas et totidem famulas cum undecim filiis et transivit vadum Iaboc
 
23.    He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.     And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.     ויקחם  ויעברם 
את־הנחל  ויעבר
את־אשר־לו׃
    VYQChM VY'yBUrM 'aTh-HNChL VY'yBUr 'aTh-'aShUr-LV.     and he taketh them, and causeth them to pass over the brook, and he causeth that which he hath to pass over.     transductisque omnibus quae ad se pertinebant
 
24.    Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.     And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.     ויותר  יעקב  לבדו 
ויאבק  איש  עמו  עד
עלות  השחר׃
    VYVThUr Y'yQB LBDV VY'aBQ 'aYSh 'yMV 'yD 'yLVTh HShChUr.     And Jacob is left alone, and one wrestleth with him till the ascending of the dawn;     remansit solus et ecce vir luctabatur cum eo usque mane
 
25.    When he saw that he didn't prevail against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was strained, as he wrestled.     And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.     וירא  כי  לא  יכל  לו 
ויגע  בכף־ירכו
ותקע  כף־ירך  יעקב
בהאבקו  עמו׃
    VYUr'a KY L'a YKL LV VYG'y BKPh-YUrKV VThQ'y KPh-YUrK Y'yQB BH'aBQV 'yMV.     and he seeth that he is not able for him, and he cometh against the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob`s thigh is disjointed in his wrestling with him;     qui cum videret quod eum superare non posset tetigit nervum femoris eius et statim emarcuit
 
26.    The man said, "Let me go, for the day breaks." Jacob said, "I won't let you go, unless you bless me."     And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.     ויאמר  שלחני  כי 
עלה  השחר  ויאמר  לא
אשלחך  כי
אם־ברכתני׃
    VY'aMUr ShLChNY KY 'yLH HShChUr VY'aMUr L'a 'aShLChK KY 'aM-BUrKThNY.     and he saith, `Send me away, for the dawn hath ascended:` and he saith, `I send thee not away, except thou hast blessed me.`     dixitque ad eum dimitte me iam enim ascendit aurora respondit non dimittam te nisi benedixeris mihi
 
27.    He said to him, "What is your name?" He said, "Jacob."     And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.     ויאמר  אליו  מה־שמך 
ויאמר  יעקב׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV MH-ShMK VY'aMUr Y'yQB.     And he saith unto him, `What is thy name?` and he saith, `Jacob.`     ait ergo quod nomen est tibi respondit Iacob
 
28.    He said, "Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed."     And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.     ויאמר  לא  יעקב 
יאמר  עוד  שמך  כי
אם־ישראל  כי־שרית
עם־אלהים  ועם־
אנשים  ותוכל׃
    VY'aMUr L'a Y'yQB Y'aMUr 'yVD ShMK KY 'aM-YShUr'aL KY-ShUrYTh 'yM-'aLHYM V'yM- 'aNShYM VThVKL.     And he saith, `Thy name is no more called Jacob, but Israel; for thou hast been a prince with God and with men, and dost prevail.`     at ille nequaquam inquit Iacob appellabitur nomen tuum sed Israhel quoniam si contra Deum fortis fuisti quanto magis contra homines praevalebis
 
29.    Jacob asked him, "Please tell me your name." He said, "Why is it that you ask what my name is?" He blessed him there.     And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.     וישאל  יעקב  ויאמר 
הגידה־נא  שמך
ויאמר  למה  זה  תשאל
לשמי  ויברך  אתו

    VYSh'aL Y'yQB VY'aMUr HGYDH-N'a ShMK VY'aMUr LMH ZH ThSh'aL LShMY VYBUrK 'aThV ShM.     And Jacob asketh, and saith, `Declare, I pray thee, thy name;` and he saith, `Why is this, thou askest for My name?` and He blesseth him there.     interrogavit eum Iacob dic mihi quo appellaris nomine respondit cur quaeris nomen meum et benedixit ei in eodem loco
 
30.    Jacob called the name of the place Peniel{Peniel means "face of God."}: for, he said, "I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved."     And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.     ויקרא  יעקב  שם

    VYQUr'a Y'yQB ShM HMQVM PhNY'aL KY-Ur'aYThY 'aLHYM PhNYM 'aL-PhNYM VThNTShL NPhShY.     And Jacob calleth the name of the place Peniel: for `I have seen God face unto face, and my life is delivered;`     vocavitque Iacob nomen loci illius Phanuhel dicens vidi Deum facie ad faciem et salva facta est anima mea
 
31.    The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.     And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.     ויזרח־לו  השמש 
כאשר  עבר  את־פנואל
והוא  צלע  על־ירכו׃
    VYZUrCh-LV HShMSh K'aShUr 'yBUr 'aTh-PhNV'aL VHV'a TShL'y 'yL-YUrKV.     and the sun riseth on him when he hath passed over Penuel, and he is halting on his thigh;     ortusque est ei statim sol postquam transgressus est Phanuhel ipse vero claudicabat pede
 
32.    Therefore the children of Israel don't eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew of the hip.     Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.     על־כן  לא־יאכלו

הנשה  אשר  על־כף
הירך  עד  היום  הזה
כי  נגע  בכף־ירך
