1.    The famine was severe in the land.     And the famine was sore in the land.     והרעב  כבד  בארץ׃      VHUr'yB KBD B'aUrTSh.     And the famine is severe in the land;     interim fames omnem terram vehementer premebat
 
2.    It happened, when they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said to them, "Go again, buy us a little more food."     And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.     ויהי  כאשר  כלו 
לאכל  את־השבר  אשר
הביאו  ממצרים
ויאמר  אליהם  אביהם
שבו  שברו־לנו
מעט־אכל׃
    VYHY K'aShUr KLV L'aKL 'aTh-HShBUr 'aShUr HBY'aV MMTShUrYM VY'aMUr 'aLYHM 'aBYHM ShBV ShBUrV-LNV M'yT-'aKL.     and it cometh to pass, when they have finished eating the corn which they brought from Egypt, that their father saith unto them, `Turn back, buy for us a little food.`     consumptisque cibis quos ex Aegypto detulerant dixit Iacob ad filios suos revertimini et emite pauxillum escarum
 
3.    Judah spoke to him, saying, "The man solemnly warned us, saying, 'You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.'     And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.     ויאמר  אליו  יהודה 
לאמר  העד  העד  בנו

    VY'aMUr 'aLYV YHVDH L'aMUr H'yD H'yD BNV H'aYSh L'aMUr L'a-ThUr'aV PhNY BLThY 'aChYKM 'aThKM.     And Judah speaketh unto him, saying, `The man protesting protested to us, saying, Ye do not see my face without your brother being with you;     respondit Iudas denuntiavit nobis vir ille sub testificatione iurandi dicens non videbitis faciem meam nisi fratrem vestrum minimum adduxeritis vobiscum
 
4.    If you'll send our brother with us, we'll go down and buy you food,     If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:     אם־ישך  משלח

5.    but if you'll not send him, we'll not go down, for the man said to us, 'You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.'"     But if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.     ואם־אינך  משלח  לא

    V'aM-'aYNK MShLCh L'a NUrD KY-H'aYSh 'aMUr 'aLYNV L'a-ThUr'aV PhNY BLThY 'aChYKM 'aThKM.     and if thou art not sending -- we do not go down, for the man said unto us, Ye do not see my face without your brother being with you.`     si autem non vis non ibimus vir enim ut saepe diximus denuntiavit nobis dicens non videbitis faciem meam absque fratre vestro minimo
 
6.    Israel said, "Why did you treat me so badly, telling the man that you had another brother?"     And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?     ויאמר  ישראל  למה 
הרעתם  לי  להגיד
לאיש  העוד  לכם  אח׃
    VY'aMUr YShUr'aL LMH HUr'yThM LY LHGYD L'aYSh H'yVD LKM 'aCh.     And Israel saith, `Why did ye evil to me, by declaring to the man that ye had yet a brother?`     dixit eis Israhel in meam hoc fecistis miseriam ut indicaretis ei et alium habere vos fratrem
 
7.    They said, "The man asked directly concerning ourselves, and concerning our relatives, saying, 'Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?' We just answered his questions. Is there any way we could know that he would say, 'Bring your brother down?'"     And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?     ויאמרו  שאול 
שאל־האיש  לנו
ולמולדתנו  לאמר
העוד  אביכם  חי  היש
לכם  אח  ונגד־לו
על־פי  הדברים  האלה
הידוע  נדע  כי  יאמר
הורידו  את־אחיכם׃
    VY'aMUrV Sh'aVL Sh'aL-H'aYSh LNV VLMVLDThNV L'aMUr H'yVD 'aBYKM ChY HYSh LKM 'aCh VNGD-LV 'yL-PhY HDBUrYM H'aLH HYDV'y ND'y KY Y'aMUr HVUrYDV 'aTh-'aChYKM.     and they say, `The man asked diligently concerning us, and concerning our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye a brother? and we declare to him according to the tenor of these things; do we certainly know that he will say, Bring down your brother?`     at illi responderunt interrogavit nos homo per ordinem nostram progeniem si pater viveret si haberemus fratrem et nos respondimus ei consequenter iuxta id quod fuerat sciscitatus numquid scire poteramus quod dicturus esset adducite vobiscum fratrem vestrum
 
8.    Judah said to Israel, his father, "Send the boy with me, and we'll get up and go, so that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones.     And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.     ויאמר  יהודה 
אל־ישראל  אביו
שלחה  הנער  אתי
ונקומה  ונלכה
ונחיה  ולא  נמות
גם־אנחנו  גם־אתה
גם־טפנו׃
    VY'aMUr YHVDH 'aL-YShUr'aL 'aBYV ShLChH HN'yUr 'aThY VNQVMH VNLKH VNChYH VL'a NMVTh GM-'aNChNV GM-'aThH GM-TPhNV.     And Judah saith unto Israel his father, `Send the youth with me, and we arise, and go, and live, and do not die, both we, and thou, and our infants.     Iudas quoque dixit patri suo mitte puerum mecum ut proficiscamur et possimus vivere ne moriamur nos et parvuli nostri
 
9.    I'll be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don't bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever,     I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:     אנכי  אערבנו  מידי 
תבקשנו  אם־לא
הביאתיו  אליך
והצגתיו  לפניך
וחטאתי  לך
כל־הימים׃
    'aNKY 'a'yUrBNV MYDY ThBQShNV 'aM-L'a HBY'aThYV 'aLYK VHTShGThYV LPhNYK VChT'aThY LK KL-HYMYM.     I -- I am surety for him, from my hand thou dost require him; if I have not brought him in unto thee, and set him before thee -- then I have sinned against thee all the days;     ego suscipio puerum de manu mea require illum nisi reduxero et tradidero eum tibi ero peccati in te reus omni tempore
 
10.    for if we hadn't delayed, surely we would have returned a second time by now."     For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.     כי  לולא  התמהמהנו 
כי־עתה  שבנו  זה
פעמים׃
    KY LVL'a HThMHMHNV KY-'yThH ShBNV ZH Ph'yMYM.     for if we had not lingered, surely now we had returned these two times.`     si non intercessisset dilatio iam vice altera venissemus
 
11.    Their father, Israel, said to them, "If it must be so, then do this. Take from the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry down a present for the man, a little balm, a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts, and almonds;     And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:     ויאמר  אלהם  ישראל 
אביהם  אם־כן  אפוא
זאת  עשו  קחו  מזמרת
הארץ  בכליכם
והורידו  לאיש  מנחה
מעט  צרי  ומעט  דבש
נכאת  ולט  בטנים
ושקדים׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLHM YShUr'aL 'aBYHM 'aM-KN 'aPhV'a Z'aTh 'yShV QChV MZMUrTh H'aUrTSh BKLYKM VHVUrYDV L'aYSh MNChH M'yT TShUrY VM'yT DBSh NK'aTh VLT BTNYM VShQDYM.     And Israel their father saith unto them, `If so, now, this do: take of the praised thing of the land in your vessels, and take down to the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts and almonds;     igitur Israhel pater eorum dixit ad eos si sic necesse est facite quod vultis sumite de optimis terrae fructibus in vasis vestris et deferte viro munera modicum resinae et mellis et styracis et stactes et terebinthi et amigdalarum
 
12.    and take double money in your hand, and take back the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight.     And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight:     וכסף  משנה  קחו 
בידכם  ואת־הכסף
המושב  בפי
אמתחתיכם  תשיבו
בידכם  אולי  משגה
הוא׃
    VKSPh MShNH QChV BYDKM V'aTh-HKSPh HMVShB BPhY 'aMThChThYKM ThShYBV BYDKM 'aVLY MShGH HV'a.     and double money take in your hand, even the money which is brought back in the mouth of your bags, ye take back in your hand, it may be it is an oversight.     pecuniamque duplicem ferte vobiscum et illam quam invenistis in sacculis reportate ne forte errore factum sit
 
13.    Take your brother also, get up, and return to the man.     Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:     ואת־אחיכם  קחו 
וקומו  שובו
אל־האיש׃
    V'aTh-'aChYKM QChV VQVMV ShVBV 'aL-H'aYSh.     `And take your brother, and rise, turn back unto the man;     sed et fratrem vestrum tollite et ite ad virum
 
14.    May God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved."     And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.     ואל  שדי  יתן  לכם 
רחמים  לפני  האיש
ושלח  לכם  את־אחיכם
אחר  ואת־  בנימין
ואני  כאשר  שכלתי
שכלתי׃
    V'aL ShDY YThN LKM UrChMYM LPhNY H'aYSh VShLCh LKM 'aTh-'aChYKM 'aChUr V'aTh- BNYMYN V'aNY K'aShUr ShKLThY ShKLThY.     and God Almighty give to you mercies before the man, so that he hath sent to you your other brother and Benjamin; and I, when I am bereaved -- I am bereaved.`     Deus autem meus omnipotens faciat vobis eum placabilem et remittat vobiscum fratrem vestrum quem tenet et hunc Beniamin ego autem quasi orbatus absque liberis ero
 
15.    The men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and got up, went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.     And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.     ויקחו  האנשים 
את־המנחה  הזאת
ומשנה־כסף  לקחו
בידם  ואת־בנימן
ויקמו  וירדו  מצרים
ויעמדו  לפני  יוסף׃
    VYQChV H'aNShYM 'aTh-HMNChH HZ'aTh VMShNH-KSPh LQChV BYDM V'aTh-BNYMN VYQMV VYUrDV MTShUrYM VY'yMDV LPhNY YVSPh.     And the men take this present, double money also they have taken in their hand, and Benjamin; and they rise, and go down to Egypt, and stand before Joseph;     tulerunt ergo viri munera et pecuniam duplicem et Beniamin descenderuntque in Aegyptum et steterunt coram Ioseph
 
16.    When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, "Bring the men into the house, and butcher an animal, and make ready; for the men will dine with me at noon."     And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.     וירא  יוסף  אתם 
את־בנימין  ויאמר
לאשר  על־ביתו  הבא
את־האנשים  הביתה
וטבח  טבח  והכן  כי
אתי  יאכלו  האנשים
בצהרים׃
    VYUr'a YVSPh 'aThM 'aTh-BNYMYN VY'aMUr L'aShUr 'yL-BYThV HB'a 'aTh-H'aNShYM HBYThH VTBCh TBCh VHKN KY 'aThY Y'aKLV H'aNShYM BTShHUrYM.     and Joseph seeth Benjamin with them, and saith to him who is over his house, `Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal, and make ready, for with me do the men eat at noon.`     quos cum ille vidisset et Beniamin simul praecepit dispensatori domus suae dicens introduc viros domum et occide victimas et instrue convivium quoniam mecum sunt comesuri meridie
 
17.    The man did as Joseph commanded, and the man brought the men to Joseph's house.     And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph's house.     ויעש  האיש  כאשר 
אמר  יוסף  ויבא
האיש  את־האנשים
ביתה  יוסף׃
    VY'ySh H'aYSh K'aShUr 'aMUr YVSPh VYB'a H'aYSh 'aTh-H'aNShYM BYThH YVSPh.     And the man doth as Joseph hath said, and the man bringeth in the men into the house of Joseph,     fecit ille sicut fuerat imperatum et introduxit viros domum
 
18.    The men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph's house; and they said, "Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time, we're brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, attack us, and seize us as slaves, along with our donkeys."     And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph's house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.     וייראו  האנשים  כי 
הובאו  בית  יוסף
ויאמרו  על־דבר
הכסף  השב
באמתחתינו  בתחלה
אנחנו  מובאים
להתגלל  עלינו
ולהתנפל  עלינו
ולקחת  אתנו  לעבדים
ואת־חמרינו׃
    VYYUr'aV H'aNShYM KY HVB'aV BYTh YVSPh VY'aMUrV 'yL-DBUr HKSPh HShB B'aMThChThYNV BThChLH 'aNChNV MVB'aYM LHThGLL 'yLYNV VLHThNPhL 'yLYNV VLQChTh 'aThNV L'yBDYM V'aTh-ChMUrYNV.     and the men are afraid because they have been brought into the house of Joseph, and they say, `For the matter of the money which was put back in our bags at the commencement are we brought in -- to roll himself upon us, and to throw himself on us, and to take us for servants -- our asses also.`     ibique exterriti dixerunt mutuo propter pecuniam quam rettulimus prius in saccis nostris introducti sumus ut devolvat in nos calumniam et violenter subiciat servituti et nos et asinos nostros
 
19.    They came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they spoke to him at the door of the house,     And they came near to the steward of Joseph's house, and they communed with him at the door of the house,     ויגשו  אל־האיש  אשר 
על־בית  יוסף
וידברו  אליו  פתח
הבית׃
    VYGShV 'aL-H'aYSh 'aShUr 'yL-BYTh YVSPh VYDBUrV 'aLYV PhThCh HBYTh.     And they come nigh unto the man who is over the house of Joseph, and speak unto him at the opening of the house,     quam ob rem in ipsis foribus accedentes ad dispensatorem
 
20.    and said, "Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food.     And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food:     ויאמרו  בי  אדני 
ירד  ירדנו  בתחלה
לשבר־אכל׃
    VY'aMUrV BY 'aDNY YUrD YUrDNV BThChLH LShBUr-'aKL.     and say, `O, my lord, we really come down at the commencement to buy food;     locuti sunt oramus domine ut audias iam ante descendimus ut emeremus escas
 
21.    When we came to the lodging place, we opened our sacks, and behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. We have brought it back in our hand.     And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man's money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand.     ויהי  כי־באנו 
אל־המלון  ונפתחה
את־אמתחתינו  והנה
כסף־איש  בפי
אמתחתו  כספנו
במשקלו  ונשב  אתו
בידנו׃
    VYHY KY-B'aNV 'aL-HMLVN VNPhThChH 'aTh-'aMThChThYNV VHNH KSPh-'aYSh BPhY 'aMThChThV KSPhNV BMShQLV VNShB 'aThV BYDNV.     and it cometh to pass, when we have come in unto the lodging-place, and open our bags, that lo, each one`s money is in the mouth of his bag, our money in its weight, and we bring it back in our hand;     quibus emptis cum venissemus ad diversorium aperuimus sacculos nostros et invenimus pecuniam in ore saccorum quam nunc eodem pondere reportamus
 
22.    We have brought down other money in our hand to buy food. We don't know who put our money in our sacks."     And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.     וכסף  אחר  הורדנו 
בידנו  לשבר־אכל  לא
ידענו  מי־שם  כספנו
באמתחתינו׃
    VKSPh 'aChUr HVUrDNV BYDNV LShBUr-'aKL L'a YD'yNV MY-ShM KSPhNV B'aMThChThYNV.     and other money have we brought down in our hand to buy food; we have not known who put our money in our bags.`     sed et aliud adtulimus argentum ut emamus quae necessaria sunt non est in nostra conscientia quis eam posuerit in marsuppiis nostris
 
23.    He said, "Peace be to you. Don't be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your money." He brought Simeon out to them.     And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.     ויאמר  שלום  לכם 
אל־תיראו  אלהיכם
ואלהי  אביכם  נתן
לכם  מטמון
באמתחתיכם  כספכם
בא  אלי  ויוצא  אלהם
את־שמעון׃
    VY'aMUr ShLVM LKM 'aL-ThYUr'aV 'aLHYKM V'aLHY 'aBYKM NThN LKM MTMVN B'aMThChThYKM KSPhKM B'a 'aLY VYVTSh'a 'aLHM 'aTh-ShM'yVN.     And he saith, `Peace to you, fear not: your God and the God of your father hath given to you hidden treasure in your bags, your money came unto me;` and he bringeth out Simeon unto them.     at ille respondit pax vobiscum nolite timere Deus vester et Deus patris vestri dedit vobis thesauros in sacculis vestris nam pecuniam quam dedistis mihi probatam ego habeo eduxitque ad eos Symeon
 
24.    The man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet. He gave their donkeys fodder.     And the man brought the men into Joseph's house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.     ויבא  האיש 
את־האנשים  ביתה
יוסף  ויתן־מים
וירחצו  רגליהם
ויתן  מספוא
לחמריהם׃
    VYB'a H'aYSh 'aTh-H'aNShYM BYThH YVSPh VYThN-MYM VYUrChTShV UrGLYHM VYThN MSPhV'a LChMUrYHM.     And the man bringeth in the men into Joseph`s house, and giveth water, and they wash their feet; and he giveth provender for their asses,     et introductis domum adtulit aquam et laverunt pedes suos deditque pabula asinis eorum
 
25.    They made ready the present for Joseph's coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there.     And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.     ויכינו  את־המנחה 
עד־בוא  יוסף
בצהרים  כי  שמעו
כי־שם  יאכלו  לחם׃
    VYKYNV 'aTh-HMNChH 'yD-BV'a YVSPh BTShHUrYM KY ShM'yV KY-ShM Y'aKLV LChM.     and they prepare the present until the coming of Joseph at noon, for they have heard that there they do eat bread.     illi vero parabant munera donec ingrederetur Ioseph meridie audierant enim quod ibi comesuri essent panem
 
26.    When Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves down to him to the earth.     And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.     ויבא  יוסף  הביתה 
ויביאו  לו
את־המנחה  אשר־בידם
הביתה  וישתחוו־לו
ארצה׃
    VYB'a YVSPh HBYThH VYBY'aV LV 'aTh-HMNChH 'aShUr-BYDM HBYThH VYShThChVV-LV 'aUrTShH.     And Joseph cometh into the house, and they bring to him the present which is in their hand, into the house, and bow themselves to him, to the earth;     igitur ingressus est Ioseph domum suam obtuleruntque ei munera tenentes in manibus et adoraverunt proni in terram
 
27.    He asked them of their welfare, and said, "Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he yet alive?"     And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive?     וישאל  להם  לשלום 
ויאמר  השלום  אביכם
הזקן  אשר  אמרתם
העודנו  חי׃
    VYSh'aL LHM LShLVM VY'aMUr HShLVM 'aBYKM HZQN 'aShUr 'aMUrThM H'yVDNV ChY.     and he asketh of them of peace, and saith, `Is your father well? the aged man of whom ye have spoken, is he yet alive?`     at ille clementer resalutatis eis interrogavit dicens salvusne est pater vester senex de quo dixeratis mihi adhuc vivit
 
28.    They said, "Your servant, our father, is well. He is still alive." They bowed the head, and did homage.     And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance.     ויאמרו  שלום  לעבדך 
לאבינו  עודנו  חי
ויקדו  וישתחו׃
    VY'aMUrV ShLVM L'yBDK L'aBYNV 'yVDNV ChY VYQDV VYShThChV.     and they say, `Thy servant our father is well, he is yet alive;` and they bow, and do obeisance.     qui responderunt sospes est servus tuus pater noster adhuc vivit et incurvati adoraverunt eum
 
29.    He lifted up his eyes, and saw Benjamin, his brother, his mother's son, and said, "Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?" He said, "God be gracious to you, my son."     And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother's son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.     וישא  עיניו  וירא 
את־בנימין  אחיו
בן־אמו  ויאמר  הזה
אחיכם  הקטן  אשר
אמרתם  אלי  ויאמר
אלהים  יחנך  בני׃
    VYSh'a 'yYNYV VYUr'a 'aTh-BNYMYN 'aChYV BN-'aMV VY'aMUr HZH 'aChYKM HQTN 'aShUr 'aMUrThM 'aLY VY'aMUr 'aLHYM YChNK BNY.     And he lifteth up his eyes, and seeth Benjamin his brother, his mother`s son, and saith, `Is this your young brother, of whom ye have spoken unto me?` and he saith, `God favour thee, my son.`     adtollens autem oculos Ioseph vidit Beniamin fratrem suum uterinum et ait iste est frater vester parvulus de quo dixeratis mihi et rursum Deus inquit misereatur tui fili mi
 
30.    Joseph hurried, for his heart yearned over his brother; and he sought a place to weep. He entered into his room, and wept there.     And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.     וימהר  יוסף 
כי־נכמרו  רחמיו
אל־אחיו  ויבקש
לבכות  ויבא  החדרה
ויבך  שמה׃

31.    He washed his face, and came out. He controlled himself, and said, "Serve the meal."     And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread.     וירחץ  פניו  ויצא

32.    They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians, that ate with him, by themselves, because the Egyptians don't eat bread with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.     And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.     וישימו  לו  לבדו

האכלים  אתו  לבדם
כי  לא  יוכלון
המצרים  לאכל
את־העברים  לחם

34.    He sent portions to them from before him, but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. They drank, and were merry with him.     And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin's mess was five times so much as any of theirs.
