2.    Put my cup, the silver cup, in the sack's mouth of the youngest, with his grain money." 3.    As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their donkeys.     As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.     הבקר  אור  והאנשים

4.    When they had gone out of the city, and were not yet far off, Joseph said to his steward, "Up, follow after the men. When you overtake them, ask them, 'Why have you rewarded evil for good?     And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?     הם  יצאו  את־העיר

    HM YTSh'aV 'aTh-H'yYUr L'a HUrChYQV VYVSPh 'aMUr L'aShUr 'yL-BYThV QVM UrDPh 'aChUrY H'aNShYM VHShGThM V'aMUrTh 'aLHM LMH ShLMThM Ur'yH ThChTh TVBH.     they have gone out of the city -- they have not gone far off -- and Joseph hath said to him who is over his house, `Rise, pursue after the men; and thou hast overtaken them, and thou hast said unto them, Why have ye recompensed evil for good?     iamque urbem exierant et processerant paululum tum Ioseph arcessito dispensatore domus surge inquit persequere viros et adprehensis dicito quare reddidistis malum pro bono
 
5.    Isn't this that from which my lord drinks, and by which he indeed divines? You have done evil in so doing.'"     Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? ye have done evil in so doing.     הלוא  זה  אשר  ישתה

6.    He overtook them, and he spoke these words to them.     And he overtook them, and he spake unto them these same words.     וישגם  וידבר  אלהם

    VYShGM VYDBUr 'aLHM 'aTh-HDBUrYM H'aLH.     And he overtaketh them, and speaketh unto them these words,     fecit ille ut iusserat et adprehensis per ordinem locutus est
 
7.    They said to him, "Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants that they should do such a thing!     And they said unto him, Wherefore saith my lord these words? God forbid that thy servants should do according to this thing:     ויאמרו  אליו  למה 
ידבר  אדני  כדברים
האלה  חלילה  לעבדיך
מעשות  כדבר  הזה׃
    VY'aMUrV 'aLYV LMH YDBUr 'aDNY KDBUrYM H'aLH ChLYLH L'yBDYK M'yShVTh KDBUr HZH.     and they say unto him, `Why doth my lord speak according to these words? far be it from thy servants to do according to this word;     qui responderunt quare sic loquitur dominus noster ut servi tui tantum flagitii commiserint
 
8.    Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought again to you out of the land of Canaan. How then should we steal silver or gold out of your lord's house?     Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks' mouths, we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then should we steal out of thy lord's house silver or gold?     הן  כסף  אשר  מצאנו

השיבנו  אליך  מארץ
כנען  ואיך  נגנב
מבית  אדניך  כסף  או
זהב׃
    HN KSPh 'aShUr MTSh'aNV BPhY 'aMThChThYNV HShYBNV 'aLYK M'aUrTSh KN'yN V'aYK NGNB MBYTh 'aDNYK KSPh 'aV ZHB.     lo, the money which we found in the mouth of our bags we brought back unto thee from the land of Canaan, and how do we steal from the house of thy lord silver or gold?     pecuniam quam invenimus in summitate saccorum reportavimus ad te de terra Chanaan et quomodo consequens est ut furati simus de domo domini tui aurum vel argentum
 
9.    With whoever of your servants it be found, let him die, and we also will be my lord's bondservants."     With whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both let him die, and we also will be my lord's bondmen.     אשר  ימצא  אתו

לאדני  לעבדים׃
    'aShUr YMTSh'a 'aThV M'yBDYK VMTh VGM-'aNChNV NHYH L'aDNY L'yBDYM.     with whomsoever of thy servants it is found, he hath died, and we also are to my lord for servants.`     apud quemcumque fuerit inventum servorum tuorum quod quaeris moriatur et nos servi erimus domini nostri
 
10.    He said, "Now also let it be according to your words: he with whom it is found will be my bondservant; and you will be blameless."     And he said, Now also let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be blameless.     ויאמר  גם־עתה 
כדבריכם  כן־הוא
אשר  ימצא  אתו
יהיה־לי  עבד  ואתם
תהיו  נקים׃
    VY'aMUr GM-'yThH KDBUrYKM KN-HV'a 'aShUr YMTSh'a 'aThV YHYH-LY 'yBD V'aThM ThHYV NQYM.     And he saith, `Now, also, according to your words, so it is; he with whom it is found becometh my servant, and ye are acquitted;`     qui dixit fiat iuxta vestram sententiam apud quem fuerit inventum ipse sit servus meus vos autem eritis innoxii
 
11.    Then they hurried, and every man took his sack down to the ground, and every man opened his sack.     Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.     וימהרו  ויורדו  איש

ויפתחו  איש
אמתחתו׃
    VYMHUrV VYVUrDV 'aYSh 'aTh-'aMThChThV 'aUrTShH VYPhThChV 'aYSh 'aMThChThV.     and they hasten and take down each his bag to the earth, and each openeth his bag;     itaque festinato deponentes in terram saccos aperuerunt singuli
 
12.    He searched, beginning with the eldest, and ending at the youngest. The cup was found in Benjamin's sack.     And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.     ויחפש  בגדול  החל 
ובקטן  כלה  וימצא
הגביע  באמתחת
בנימן׃
    VYChPhSh BGDVL HChL VBQTN KLH VYMTSh'a HGBY'y B'aMThChTh BNYMN.     and he searcheth -- at the eldest he hath begun, and at the youngest he hath completed -- and the cup is found in the bag of Benjamin;     quos scrutatus incipiens a maiore usque ad minimum invenit scyphum in sacco Beniamin
 
13.    Then they tore their clothes, and every man loaded his donkey, and returned to the city.     Then they rent their clothes, and laded every man his ass, and returned to the city.     ויקרעו  שמלתם 
ויעמס  איש  על־חמרו
וישבו  העירה׃
    VYQUr'yV ShMLThM VY'yMS 'aYSh 'yL-ChMUrV VYShBV H'yYUrH.     and they rend their garments, and each ladeth his ass, and they turn back to the city.     at illi scissis vestibus oneratisque rursum asinis reversi sunt in oppidum
 
14.    Judah and his brothers came to Joseph's house, and he was still there. They fell on the ground before him.     And Judah and his brethren came to Joseph's house; for he was yet there: and they fell before him on the ground.     ויבא  יהודה  ואחיו 
ביתה  יוסף  והוא
עודנו  שם  ויפלו
לפניו  ארצה׃
    VYB'a YHVDH V'aChYV BYThH YVSPh VHV'a 'yVDNV ShM VYPhLV LPhNYV 'aUrTShH.     And Judah -- his brethren also -- cometh in unto the house of Joseph, and he is yet there, and they fall before him to the earth;     primusque Iudas cum fratribus ingressus est ad Ioseph necdum enim de loco abierat omnesque ante eum in terra pariter corruerunt
 
15.    Joseph said to them, "What deed is this that you have done? Don't you know that such a man as I can indeed divine?"     And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that such a man as I can certainly divine?     ויאמר  להם  יוסף 
מה־המעשה  הזה  אשר
עשיתם  הלוא  ידעתם
כי־נחש  ינחש  איש
אשר  כמני׃
    VY'aMUr LHM YVSPh MH-HM'yShH HZH 'aShUr 'yShYThM HLV'a YD'yThM KY-NChSh YNChSh 'aYSh 'aShUr KMNY.     and Joseph saith to them, `What is this deed that ye have done? have ye not known that a man like me doth diligently observe?`     quibus ille ait cur sic agere voluistis an ignoratis quod non sit similis mei in augurandi scientia
 
16.    Judah said, "What will we tell my lord? What will we speak? Or how will we clear ourselves? God has found out the iniquity of your servants. Behold, we are my lord's bondservants, both we, and he also in whose hand the cup is found."     And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord's servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.     ויאמר  יהודה 
מה־נאמר  לאדני
מה־נדבר  ומה־נצטדק
האלהים  מצא  את־
עון  עבדיך  הננו
עבדים  לאדני
גם־אנחנו  גם
אשר־נמצא  הגביע
בידו׃
    VY'aMUr YHVDH MH-N'aMUr L'aDNY MH-NDBUr VMH-NTShTDQ H'aLHYM MTSh'a 'aTh- 'yVN 'yBDYK HNNV 'yBDYM L'aDNY GM-'aNChNV GM 'aShUr-NMTSh'a HGBY'y BYDV.     And Judah saith, `What do we say to my lord? what do we speak? and what -- do we justify ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants; lo, we are servants to my lord, both we, and he in whose hand the cup hath been found;`     cui Iudas quid respondebimus inquit domino meo vel quid loquemur aut iusti poterimus obtendere Deus invenit iniquitatem servorum tuorum en omnes servi sumus domini mei et nos et apud quem inventus est scyphus
 
17.    He said, "Far be it from me that I should do so. The man in whose hand the cup is found, he will be my bondservant; but as for you, go up in peace to your father."     And he said, God forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.     ויאמר  חלילה  לי 
מעשות  זאת  האיש
אשר  נמצא  הגביע
בידו  הוא  יהיה־  לי
עבד  ואתם  עלו
לשלום  אל־אביכם׃
    VY'aMUr ChLYLH LY M'yShVTh Z'aTh H'aYSh 'aShUr NMTSh'a HGBY'y BYDV HV'a YHYH- LY 'yBD V'aThM 'yLV LShLVM 'aL-'aBYKM.     and he saith, `Far be it from me to do this; the man in whose hand the cup hath been found, he becometh my servant; and ye, go ye up in peace unto your father.`     respondit Ioseph absit a me ut sic agam qui furatus est scyphum ipse sit servus meus vos autem abite liberi ad patrem vestrum
 
18.    Then Judah came near to him, and said, "Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord's ears, and don't let your anger burn against your servant; for you are even as Pharaoh.     Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.     ויגש  אליו  יהודה 
ויאמר  בי  אדני
ידבר־נא  עבדך  דבר
באזני  אדני
ואל־יחר  אפך  בעבדך
כי  כמוך  כפרעה׃
    VYGSh 'aLYV YHVDH VY'aMUr BY 'aDNY YDBUr-N'a 'yBDK DBUr B'aZNY 'aDNY V'aL-YChUr 'aPhK B'yBDK KY KMVK KPhUr'yH.     And Judah cometh nigh unto him, and saith, `O, my lord, let thy servant speak, I pray thee, a word in the ears of my lord, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant -- for thou art as Pharaoh.     accedens propius Iudas confidenter ait oro domine mi loquatur servus tuus verbum in auribus tuis et ne irascaris famulo tuo tu es enim post Pharaonem
 
19.    My lord asked his servants, saying, 'Have you a father, or a brother?'     My lord asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father, or a brother?     אדני  שאל  את־עבדיו

    'aDNY Sh'aL 'aTh-'yBDYV L'aMUr HYSh-LKM 'aB 'aV-'aCh.     My lord hath asked his servants, saying, Have ye a father or brother?     dominus meus interrogasti prius servos tuos habetis patrem aut fratrem
 
20.    We said to my lord, 'We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother; and his father loves him.'     And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.     ונאמר  אל־אדני 
יש־לנו  אב  זקן
וילד  זקנים  קטן
ואחיו  מת  ויותר
הוא  לבדו  לאמו
ואביו  אהבו׃
    VN'aMUr 'aL-'aDNY YSh-LNV 'aB ZQN VYLD ZQNYM QTN V'aChYV MTh VYVThUr HV'a LBDV L'aMV V'aBYV 'aHBV.     and we say unto my lord, We have a father, an aged one, and a child of old age, a little one; and his brother died, and he is left alone of his mother, and his father hath loved him.     et nos respondimus tibi domino meo est nobis pater senex et puer parvulus qui in senecta illius natus est cuius uterinus frater est mortuus et ipsum solum habet mater sua pater vero tenere diligit eum
 
21.    You said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.'     And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.     ותאמר  אל־עבדיך 
הורדהו  אלי  ואשימה
עיני  עליו׃
    VTh'aMUr 'aL-'yBDYK HVUrDHV 'aLY V'aShYMH 'yYNY 'yLYV.     `And thou sayest unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, and I set mine eye upon him;     dixistique servis tuis adducite eum ad me et ponam oculos meos super illum
 
22.    We said to my lord, 'The boy can't leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.'     And we said unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.     ונאמר  אל־אדני 
לא־יוכל  הנער  לעזב
את־אביו  ועזב
את־אביו  ומת׃
    VN'aMUr 'aL-'aDNY L'a-YVKL HN'yUr L'yZB 'aTh-'aBYV V'yZB 'aTh-'aBYV VMTh.     and we say unto my lord, The youth is not able to leave his father, when he hath left his father, then he hath died;     suggessimus domino meo non potest puer relinquere patrem suum si enim illum dimiserit morietur
 
23.    You said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will see my face no more.'     And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.     ותאמר  אל־עבדיך 
אם־לא  ירד  אחיכם
הקטן  אתכם  לא
תספון  לראות  פני׃
    VTh'aMUr 'aL-'yBDYK 'aM-L'a YUrD 'aChYKM HQTN 'aThKM L'a ThSPhVN LUr'aVTh PhNY.     and thou sayest unto thy servants, If your young brother come not down with you, ye add not to see my face.     et dixisti servis tuis nisi venerit frater vester minimus vobiscum non videbitis amplius faciem meam
 
24.    It happened when we came up to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.     And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father, we told him the words of my lord.     ויהי  כי  עלינו 
אל־עבדך  אבי
ונגד־לו  את  דברי
אדני׃
    VYHY KY 'yLYNV 'aL-'yBDK 'aBY VNGD-LV 'aTh DBUrY 'aDNY.     `And it cometh to pass, that we have come up unto thy servant my father, that we declare to him the words of my lord;     cum ergo ascendissemus ad famulum tuum patrem nostrum narravimus ei omnia quae locutus est dominus meus
 
25.    Our father said, 'Go again, buy us a little food.'     And our father said, Go again, and buy us a little food.     ויאמר  אבינו  שבו 
שברו־לנו  מעט־אכל׃
    VY'aMUr 'aBYNV ShBV ShBUrV-LNV M'yT-'aKL.     and our father saith, Turn back, buy for us a little food,     et dixit pater noster revertimini et emite nobis parum tritici
 
26.    We said, 'We can't go down. If our youngest brother is with us, then we will go down: for we may not see the man's face, unless our youngest brother is with us.'     And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man's face, except our youngest brother be with us.     ונאמר  לא  נוכל 
לרדת  אם־יש  אחינו
הקטן  אתנו  וירדנו
כי־לא  נוכל  לראות
פני  האיש  ואחינו
הקטן  איננו  אתנו׃
    VN'aMUr L'a NVKL LUrDTh 'aM-YSh 'aChYNV HQTN 'aThNV VYUrDNV KY-L'a NVKL LUr'aVTh PhNY H'aYSh V'aChYNV HQTN 'aYNNV 'aThNV.     and we say, We are not able to go down; if our young brother is with us, then we have gone down; for we are not able to see the man`s face, and our young brother not with us.     cui diximus ire non possumus si frater noster minimus descendet nobiscum proficiscemur simul alioquin illo absente non audemus videre faciem viri
 
27.    Your servant, my father, said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons:     And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:     ויאמר  עבדך  אבי 
אלינו  אתם  ידעתם
כי  שנים  ילדה־לי
אשתי׃
    VY'aMUr 'yBDK 'aBY 'aLYNV 'aThM YD'yThM KY ShNYM YLDH-LY 'aShThY.     `And thy servant my father saith unto us, Ye -- ye have known that two did my wife bare to me,     atque ille respondit vos scitis quod duos genuerit mihi uxor mea
 
28.    and the one went out from me, and I said, "Surely he is torn in pieces;" and I haven't seen him since.     And the one went out from me, and I said, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I saw him not since:     ויצא  האחד  מאתי

ולא  ראיתיו
עד־הנה׃
    VYTSh'a H'aChD M'aThY V'aMUr 'aK TUrPh TUrPh VL'a Ur'aYThYV 'yD-HNH.     and the one goeth out from me, and I say, Surely he is torn -- torn! and I have not seen him since;     egressus est unus et dixistis bestia devoravit eum et hucusque non conparet
 
29.    If you take this one also from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol{Sheol is the place of the dead.}.'     And if ye take this also from me, and mischief befall him, ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.     ולקחתם  גם־את־זה 
מעם  פני  וקרהו
אסון  והורדתם
את־שיבתי  ברעה
שאלה׃
    VLQChThM GM-'aTh-ZH M'yM PhNY VQUrHV 'aSVN VHVUrDThM 'aTh-ShYBThY BUr'yH Sh'aLH.     when ye have taken also this from my presence, and mischief hath met him, then ye have brought down my grey hairs with evil to sheol.     si tuleritis et istum et aliquid ei in via contigerit deducetis canos meos cum maerore ad inferos
 
30.    Now therefore when I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the boy's life;     Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the lad's life;     ועתה  כבאי  אל־עבדך 
אבי  והנער  איננו
אתנו  ונפשו  קשורה
בנפשו׃
    V'yThH KB'aY 'aL-'yBDK 'aBY VHN'yUr 'aYNNV 'aThNV VNPhShV QShVUrH BNPhShV.     `And now, at my coming in unto thy servant my father, and the youth not with us (and his soul is bound up in his soul),     igitur si intravero ad servum tuum patrem nostrum et puer defuerit cum anima illius ex huius anima pendeat
 
31.    it will happen, when he sees that the boy is no more, that he will die. Your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant, our father, with sorrow to Sheol{Sheol is the place of the dead.}.     It shall come to pass, when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.     והיה  כראותו 
כי־אין  הנער  ומת
והורידו  עבדיך
את־שיבת  עבדך
אבינו  ביגון  שאלה׃
    VHYH KUr'aVThV KY-'aYN HN'yUr VMTh VHVUrYDV 'yBDYK 'aTh-ShYBTh 'yBDK 'aBYNV BYGVN Sh'aLH.     then it hath come to pass when he seeth that the youth is not, that he hath died, and thy servants have brought down the grey hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to sheol;     videritque eum non esse nobiscum morietur et deducent famuli tui canos eius cum dolore ad inferos
 
32.    For your servant became collateral for the boy to my father, saying, 'If I don't bring him to you, then I will bear the blame to my father forever.'     For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever.     כי  עבדך  ערב 
את־הנער  מעם  אבי
לאמר  אם־לא  אביאנו
אליך  וחטאתי  לאבי
כל־הימים׃
    KY 'yBDK 'yUrB 'aTh-HN'yUr M'yM 'aBY L'aMUr 'aM-L'a 'aBY'aNV 'aLYK VChT'aThY L'aBY KL-HYMYM.     for thy servant obtained the youth by surety from my father, saying, If I bring him not in unto thee -- then I have sinned against my father all the days.     ego proprie servus tuus qui in meam hunc recepi fidem et spopondi dicens nisi reduxero eum peccati reus ero in patrem meum omni tempore
 
33.    Now therefore, please let your servant stay instead of the boy, a bondservant to my lord; and let the boy go up with his brothers.     Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant abide instead of the lad a bondman to my lord; and let the lad go up with his brethren.     ועתה  ישב־נא  עבדך

    V'yThH YShB-N'a 'yBDK ThChTh HN'yUr 'yBD L'aDNY VHN'yUr Y'yL 'yM-'aChYV.     `And now, let thy servant, I pray thee, abide instead of the youth a servant to my lord, and the youth goeth up with his brethren,     manebo itaque servus tuus pro puero in ministerium domini mei et puer ascendat cum fratribus suis
 
34.    For how will I go up to my father, if the boy isn't with me?--lest I see the evil that will come on my father."     For how shall I go up to my father, and the lad be not with me? lest peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.     כי־איך  אעלה
