2.    Joseph commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father; and the physicians embalmed Israel.     And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.     ויצו  יוסף

    VYTShV YVSPh 'aTh-'yBDYV 'aTh-HUrPh'aYM LChNT 'aTh-'aBYV VYChNTV HUrPh'aYM 'aTh- YShUr'aL.     and Joseph commandeth his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father, and the physicians embalm Israel;     praecepitque servis suis medicis ut aromatibus condirent patrem
 
3.    Forty days were fulfilled for him, for that is how many the days it takes to embalm. The Egyptians wept for him for seventy days.     And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.     וימלאו־לו  ארבעים

    VYML'aV-LV 'aUrB'yYM YVM KY KN YML'aV YMY HChNTYM VYBKV 'aThV MTShUrYM ShB'yYM YVM.     and they fulfil for him forty days, for so they fulfil the days of the embalmed, and the Egyptians weep for him seventy days.     quibus iussa explentibus transierunt quadraginta dies iste quippe mos erat cadaverum conditorum flevitque eum Aegyptus septuaginta diebus
 
4.    When the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the house of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,     And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,     ויעברו  ימי  בכיתו 
וידבר  יוסף  אל־בית
פרעה  לאמר  אם־נא
מצאתי  חן  בעיניכם
דברו־נא  באזני
פרעה  לאמר׃
    VY'yBUrV YMY BKYThV VYDBUr YVSPh 'aL-BYTh PhUr'yH L'aMUr 'aM-N'a MTSh'aThY ChN B'yYNYKM DBUrV-N'a B'aZNY PhUr'yH L'aMUr.     And the days of his weeping pass away, and Joseph speaketh unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, `If, I pray you, I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,     et expleto planctus tempore locutus est Ioseph ad familiam Pharaonis si inveni gratiam in conspectu vestro loquimini in auribus Pharaonis
 
5.    'My father made me swear, saying, "Behold, I am dying. Bury me in my grave which I have dug for myself in the land of Canaan." Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come again.'"     My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.     אבי  השביעני  לאמר 
הנה  אנכי  מת  בקברי
אשר  כריתי  לי  בארץ
כנען  שמה  תקברני
ועתה  אעלה־נא

    'aBY HShBY'yNY L'aMUr HNH 'aNKY MTh BQBUrY 'aShUr KUrYThY LY B'aUrTSh KN'yN ShMH ThQBUrNY V'yThH 'a'yLH-N'a V'aQBUrH 'aTh-'aBY V'aShVBH.     My father caused me to swear, saying, Lo, I am dying; in my burying-place which I have prepared for myself in the land of Canaan, there dost thou bury me; and now, let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and return;`     eo quod pater meus adiuraverit me dicens en morior in sepulchro meo quod fodi mihi in terra Chanaan sepelies me ascendam igitur et sepeliam patrem meum ac revertar
 
6.    Pharaoh said, "Go up, and bury your father, just like he made you swear."     And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.     ויאמר  פרעה  עלה 
וקבר  את־אביך  כאשר
השביעך׃
    VY'aMUr PhUr'yH 'yLH VQBUr 'aTh-'aBYK K'aShUr HShBY'yK.     and Pharaoh saith, `Go up and bury thy father, as he caused thee to swear.`     dixitque ei Pharao ascende et sepeli patrem tuum sicut adiuratus es
 
7.    Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, all the elders of the land of Egypt,     And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,     ויעל  יוסף  לקבר

8.    all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father's house. 9.    There went up with him both chariots and horsemen. It was a very great company.     And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.     ויעל  עמו  גם־רכב

המחנה  כבד  מאד׃

10.    They came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and there they lamented with a very great and sore lamentation.     VYB'aV 'yD-GUrN H'aTD 'aShUr B'yBUr HYUrDN VYSPhDV-ShM MSPhD GDVL VKBD M'aD VY'ySh L'aBYV 'aBL ShB'yTh YMYM.     And they come unto the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, and they lament there, a lamentation great and very grievous; and he maketh for his father a mourning seven days,     veneruntque ad aream Atad quae sita est trans Iordanem ubi celebrantes exequias planctu magno atque vehementi impleverunt septem dies
 
11.    When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievous mourning by the Egyptians." Therefore, its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.     And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abelmizraim, which is beyond Jordan.     וירא  יושב  הארץ

    VYUr'a YVShB H'aUrTSh HKN'yNY 'aTh-H'aBL BGUrN H'aTD VY'aMUrV 'aBL-KBD ZH LMTShUrYM 'yL-KN QUr'a ShMH 'aBL MTShUrYM 'aShUr B'yBUr HYUrDN.     and the inhabitant of the land, the Canaanite, see the mourning in the threshing-floor of Atad, and say, `A grievous mourning is this to the Egyptians;` therefore hath one called its name `The mourning of the Egyptians,` which is beyond the Jordan.     quod cum vidissent habitatores terrae Chanaan dixerunt planctus magnus est iste Aegyptiis et idcirco appellaverunt nomen loci illius Planctus Aegypti
 
12.    His sons did to him just as he commanded them,     And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:     ויעשו  בניו  לו  כן

14.    Joseph returned into Egypt--he, and his brothers, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.     And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.     וישב  יוסף  מצרימה

15.    When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "It may be that Joseph will hate us, and will fully pay us back for all of the evil which we did to him."     And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.     ויראו  אחי־יוסף 
כי־מת  אביהם
ויאמרו  לו  ישטמנו
יוסף  והשב  ישיב
לנו  את  כל־הרעה
אשר  גמלנו  אתו׃
    VYUr'aV 'aChY-YVSPh KY-MTh 'aBYHM VY'aMUrV LV YShTMNV YVSPh VHShB YShYB LNV 'aTh KL-HUr'yH 'aShUr GMLNV 'aThV.     And the brethren of Joseph see that their father is dead, and say, `Peradventure Joseph doth hate us, and doth certainly return to us all the evil which we did with him.`     quo mortuo timentes fratres eius et mutuo conloquentes ne forte memor sit iniuriae quam passus est et reddat nobis malum omne quod fecimus
 
16.    They sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father commanded before he died, saying,     And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,     ויצוו  אל־יוסף 
לאמר  אביך  צוה
לפני  מותו  לאמר׃
    VYTShVV 'aL-YVSPh L'aMUr 'aBYK TShVH LPhNY MVThV L'aMUr.     And they give a charge for Joseph, saying, `Thy father commanded before his death, saying,     mandaverunt ei pater tuus praecepit nobis antequam moreretur
 
17.    'You shall tell Joseph, "Now please forgive the disobedience of your brothers, and their sin, because they did evil to you."' Now, please forgive the disobedience of the servants of the God of your father." Joseph wept when they spoke to him.     So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.     כה־תאמרו  ליוסף 
אנא  שא  נא  פשע
אחיך  וחטאתם
כי־רעה  גמלוך  ועתה
שא  נא  לפשע  עבדי
אלהי  אביך  ויבך
יוסף  בדברם  אליו׃
    KH-Th'aMUrV LYVSPh 'aN'a Sh'a N'a PhSh'y 'aChYK VChT'aThM KY-Ur'yH GMLVK V'yThH Sh'a N'a LPhSh'y 'yBDY 'aLHY 'aBYK VYBK YVSPh BDBUrM 'aLYV.     Thus ye do say to Joseph, I pray thee, bear, I pray thee, with the transgression of thy brethren, and their sin, for they have done thee evil; and now, bear, we pray thee, with the transgression of the servants of the God of thy father;` and Joseph weepeth in their speaking unto him.     ut haec tibi verbis illius diceremus obsecro ut obliviscaris sceleris fratrum tuorum et peccati atque malitiae quam exercuerunt in te nos quoque oramus ut servis Dei patris tui dimittas iniquitatem hanc quibus auditis flevit Ioseph
 
18.    His brothers also went and fell down before his face; and they said, "Behold, we are your servants."     And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.     וילכו  גם־אחיו 
ויפלו  לפניו
ויאמרו  הננו  לך
לעבדים׃
    VYLKV GM-'aChYV VYPhLV LPhNYV VY'aMUrV HNNV LK L'yBDYM.     And his brethren also go and fall before him, and say, `Lo, we are to thee for servants.`     veneruntque ad eum fratres sui et proni in terram dixerunt servi tui sumus
 
19.    Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid, for am I in the place of God?     And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?     ויאמר  אלהם  יוסף 
אל־תיראו  כי  התחת
אלהים  אני׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLHM YVSPh 'aL-ThYUr'aV KY HThChTh 'aLHYM 'aNY.     And Joseph saith unto them, `Fear not, for am I in the place of God?     quibus ille respondit nolite timere num Dei possumus rennuere voluntatem
 
20.    As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save many people alive.     But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.     ואתם  חשבתם  עלי 
רעה  אלהים  חשבה
לטבה  למען  עשה
כיום  הזה  להחית
עם־רב׃
    V'aThM ChShBThM 'yLY Ur'yH 'aLHYM ChShBH LTBH LM'yN 'yShH KYVM HZH LHChYTh 'yM-UrB.     As for you, ye devised against me evil -- God devised it for good, in order to do as at this day, to keep alive a numerous people;     vos cogitastis de me malum et Deus vertit illud in bonum ut exaltaret me sicut inpraesentiarum cernitis et salvos faceret multos populos
 
21.    Now therefore don't be afraid. I will nourish you and your little ones." He comforted them, and spoke kindly to them.     Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.     ועתה  אל־תיראו 
אנכי  אכלכל  אתכם
ואת־טפכם  וינחם
אותם  וידבר  על־
לבם׃
    V'yThH 'aL-ThYUr'aV 'aNKY 'aKLKL 'aThKM V'aTh-TPhKM VYNChM 'aVThM VYDBUr 'yL- LBM.     and now, fear not: I do nourish you and your infants;` and he comforteth them, and speaketh unto their heart.     nolite metuere ego pascam vos et parvulos vestros consolatusque est eos et blande ac leniter est locutus
 
22.    Joseph lived in Egypt, he, and his father's house. Joseph lived one hundred ten years.     And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father's house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.     וישב  יוסף  במצרים 
הוא  ובית  אביו
ויחי  יוסף  מאה
ועשר  שנים׃
    VYShB YVSPh BMTShUrYM HV'a VBYTh 'aBYV VYChY YVSPh M'aH V'yShUr ShNYM.     And Joseph dwelleth in Egypt, he and the house of his father, and Joseph liveth a hundred and ten years,     et habitavit in Aegypto cum omni domo patris sui vixitque centum decem annis et vidit Ephraim filios usque ad tertiam generationem filii quoque Machir filii Manasse nati sunt in genibus Ioseph
 
23.    Joseph saw Ephraim's children to the third generation. The children also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph's knees.     And Joseph saw Ephraim's children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph's knees.     וירא  יוסף  לאפרים 
בני  שלשים  גם  בני
מכיר  בן־מנשה  ילדו
על־ברכי  יוסף׃
    VYUr'a YVSPh L'aPhUrYM BNY ShLShYM GM BNY MKYUr BN-MNShH YLDV 'yL-BUrKY YVSPh.     and Joseph looketh on Ephraim`s sons of the third generation; sons also of Machir, son of Manasseh, have been born on the knees of Joseph.     quibus transactis locutus est fratribus suis post mortem meam Deus visitabit vos et ascendere faciet de terra ista ad terram quam iuravit Abraham Isaac et Iacob
 
24.    Joseph said to his brothers, "I am dying, but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."     And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.     ויאמר  יוסף 
אל־אחיו  אנכי  מת
ואלהים  פקד  יפקד
אתכם  והעלה  אתכם
מן־הארץ  הזאת
אל־הארץ  אשר  נשבע
לאברהם  ליצחק
וליעקב׃
    VY'aMUr YVSPh 'aL-'aChYV 'aNKY MTh V'aLHYM PhQD YPhQD 'aThKM VH'yLH 'aThKM MN-H'aUrTSh HZ'aTh 'aL-H'aUrTSh 'aShUr NShB'y L'aBUrHM LYTShChQ VLY'yQB.     And Joseph saith unto his brethren, `I am dying, and God doth certainly inspect you, and hath caused you to go up from this land, unto the land which He hath sworn to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.`     cumque adiurasset eos atque dixisset Deus visitabit vos asportate vobiscum ossa mea de loco isto
 
25.    Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here."     And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.     וישבע  יוסף  את־בני 
ישראל  לאמר  פקד
יפקד  אלהים  אתכם
והעלתם  את־  עצמתי
מזה׃
    VYShB'y YVSPh 'aTh-BNY YShUr'aL L'aMUr PhQD YPhQD 'aLHYM 'aThKM VH'yLThM 'aTh- 'yTShMThY MZH.     And Joseph causeth the sons of Israel to swear, saying, `God doth certainly inspect you, and ye have brought up my bones from this place.`    
 
26.    So Joseph died, being one hundred ten years old, and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.     So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.     וימת  יוסף  בן־מאה 
ועשר  שנים  ויחנטו
אתו  ויישם  בארון

    VYMTh YVSPh BN-M'aH V'yShUr ShNYM VYChNTV 'aThV VYYShM B'aUrVN BMTShUrYM.     And Joseph dieth, a son of an hundred and ten years, and they embalm him, and he is put into a coffin in Egypt.
