| 5. | While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. | 10. | His disciples asked him, saying, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" | And his disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come? | και επηρωτησαν αυτον οι μαθηται λεγοντες τι ουν οι γραμματεις λεγουσιν οτι ηλιαν δει ελθειν πρωτον | And his disciples questioned him, saying, `Why then do the scribes say that Elijah it behoveth to come first?` | et interrogaverunt eum discipuli dicentes quid ergo scribae dicunt quod Heliam oporteat primum venire | ||||
| 11. | Jesus answered them, "Elijah indeed comes first, and will restore all things, | And Jesus answered and said unto them, Elias truly shall first come, and restore all things. | ο δε αποκριθεις ειπεν ηλιας μεν ερχεται και αποκαταστησει παντα | And Jesus answering said to them, `Elijah doth indeed come first, and shall restore all things, | at ille respondens ait eis Helias quidem venturus est et restituet omnia | ||||
| 12. | but I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they didn't recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted to. Even so the Son of Man will also suffer by them." | But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. | 17. | Jesus answered, "Faithless and perverse generation! How long will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him here to me." | Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. | αποκριθεις δε ο ιησους ειπεν ω γενεα απιστος και διεστραμμενη εως ποτε μεθ υμων εσομαι εως ποτε ανεξομαι υμων φερετε μοι αυτον ωδε | And Jesus answering said, `O generation, unstedfast and perverse, till when shall I be with you? till when shall I bear you? bring him to me hither;` | et increpavit ei Iesus et exiit ab eo daemonium et curatus est puer ex illa hora | ||||
| 18. | Jesus rebuked him, the demon went out of him, and the boy was cured from that hour. | And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. | και επετιμησεν αυτω ο ιησους και εξηλθεν απ αυτου το δαιμονιον και εθεραπευθη ο παις απο της ωρας εκεινης | and Jesus rebuked him, and the demon went out of him, and the lad was healed from that hour. | tunc accesserunt discipuli ad Iesum secreto et dixerunt quare nos non potuimus eicere illum | ||||
| 19. | Then the disciples came to Jesus privately, and said, "Why weren't we able to cast it out?" | Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? | τοτε προσελθοντες οι μαθηται τω ιησου κατ ιδιαν ειπον δια τι ημεις ουκ ηδυνηθημεν εκβαλειν αυτο | Then the disciples having come to Jesus by himself, said, `Wherefore were we not able to cast him out?` | dicit illis propter incredulitatem vestram amen quippe dico vobis si habueritis fidem sicut granum sinapis dicetis monti huic transi hinc et transibit et nihil inpossibile erit vobis | ||||
| 20. | He said to them, "Because of your unbelief. For most certainly I tell you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. | And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. | ο δε λεγει αυτοις δια την ολιγοπιστιαν υμων αμην γαρ λεγω υμιν εαν εχητε πιστιν ως κοκκον σιναπεως ερειτε τω ορει τουτω μεταβα ενθεν εκει και μεταβησεται και ουδεν αδυνατησει υμιν | And Jesus said to them, `Through your want of faith; for verily I say to you, if ye may have faith as a grain of mustard, ye shall say to this mount, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you, | hoc autem genus non eicitur nisi per orationem et ieiunium | ||||
| 21. | But this kind doesn't go out except by prayer and fasting." | Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. | and this kind doth not go forth except in prayer and fasting.` | et occident eum et tertio die resurget et contristati sunt vehementer | |||||
| 22. | While they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be delivered up into the hands of men, | And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men: | συστρεφομενων δε αυτων εν τη γαλιλαια ειπεν αυτοις ο ιησους μελλει ο υιος του ανθρωπου παραδιδοσθαι εις χειρας ανθρωπων | And while they are living in Galilee, Jesus said to them, `The Son of Man is about to be delivered up to the hands of men, | et cum venissent Capharnaum accesserunt qui didragma accipiebant ad Petrum et dixerunt magister vester non solvit didragma | ||||
| 23. | and they will kill him, and the third day he will be raised up." They were exceedingly sorry. | And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry. | και αποκτενουσιν αυτον και τη τριτη ημερα εγερθησεται και ελυπηθησαν σφοδρα | and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise,` and they were exceeding sorry. | ait etiam et cum intrasset domum praevenit eum Iesus dicens quid tibi videtur Simon reges terrae a quibus accipiunt tributum vel censum a filiis suis an ab alienis | ||||
| 24. | When they had come to Capernaum, those who collected the didrachma coins{A didrachma is a Greek silver coin worth 2 drachmas, about as much as 2 Roman denarii, or about 2 days' wages. It was commonly used to pay the half-shekel temple tax, because 2 drachmas were worth one half shekel of silver.} came to Peter, and said, "Doesn't your teacher pay the didrachma?" | And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? | ελθοντων δε αυτων εις καφαρναουμ προσηλθον οι τα διδραχμα λαμβανοντες τω πετρω και ειπαν ο διδασκαλος υμων ου τελει [τα] διδραχμα | And they having come to Capernaum, those receiving the didrachms came near to Peter, and said, `Your teacher -- doth he not pay the didrachms?` He saith, `Yes.` | et ille dixit ab alienis dixit illi Iesus ergo liberi sunt filii | ||||
| 25. | He said, "Yes." When he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth receive toll or tribute? From their children, or from strangers?" | He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? | λεγει ναι και ελθοντα εις την οικιαν προεφθασεν αυτον ο ιησους λεγων τι σοι δοκει σιμων οι βασιλεις της γης απο τινων λαμβανουσιν τελη η κηνσον απο των υιων αυτων η απο των αλλοτριων | And when he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, `What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth -- from whom do they receive custom or poll-tax? from their sons or from the strangers?` | ut autem non scandalizemus eos vade ad mare et mitte hamum et eum piscem qui primus ascenderit tolle et aperto ore eius invenies staterem illum sumens da eis pro me et te | ||||
| 26. | Peter said to him, "From strangers." Jesus said to him, "Therefore the children are exempt. | Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. | ειποντοσ δε απο των αλλοτριων εφη αυτω ο ιησους αρα γε ελευθεροι εισιν οι υιοι | Peter saith to him, `From the strangers.` Jesus said to him, `Then are the sons free; | King James Version Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee. | ||||
| 27. | But, lest we cause them to stumble, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up. When you have opened its mouth, you will find a stater coin.{A stater is a silver coin equivalent to four Attic or two Alexandrian drachmas, or a Jewish shekel: just exactly enough to cover the half-shekel temple tax for two people.} Take that, and give it to them for me and you." | Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee. | ινα δε μη σκανδαλισωμεν αυτους πορευθεις εις θαλασσαν βαλε αγκιστρον και τον αναβαντα πρωτον ιχθυν αρον και ανοιξας το στομα αυτου ευρησεις στατηρα εκεινον λαβων δος αυτοις αντι εμου και σου | but, that we may not cause them to stumble, having gone to the sea, cast a hook, and the fish that hath come up first take thou up, and having opened its mouth, thou shalt find a stater, that having taken, give to them for me and thee.` | |||||
