2.    saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses' seat.     Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:     λεγων επι της μωυσεωσ καθεδρας εκαθισαν οι γραμματεις και οι φαρισαιοι     saying, `On the seat of Moses sat down the scribes and the Pharisees;     dicens super cathedram Mosi sederunt scribae et Pharisaei
 
3.    All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don't do their works; for they say, and don't do.     All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.     παντα ουν οσα εαν ειπωσιν υμιν ποιησατε και τηρειτε  κατα δε τα εργα αυτων μη ποιειτε λεγουσιν γαρ και ου ποιουσιν     all, then, as much as they may say to you to observe, observe and do, but according to their works do not, for they say, and do not;     omnia ergo quaecumque dixerint vobis servate et facite secundum opera vero eorum nolite facere dicunt enim et non faciunt
 
4.    For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.     For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.     δεσμευουσιν δε φορτια βαρεα [και δυσβαστακτα] και επιτιθεασιν επι τους ωμους των ανθρωπων αυτοι δε τω δακτυλω αυτων ου θελουσιν κινησαι αυτα     for they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them.     alligant autem onera gravia et inportabilia et inponunt in umeros hominum digito autem suo nolunt ea movere
 
5.    But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries{phylacteries (tefillin in Hebrew) are small leather pouches that some Jewish men wear on their forehead and arm in prayer. They are used to carry a small scroll with some Scripture in it. See Deuteronomy 6:8.} broad, enlarge the fringes{or, tassels} of their garments,     But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,     παντα δε τα εργα αυτων ποιουσιν προς το θεαθηναι τοις ανθρωποις πλατυνουσιν γαρ τα φυλακτηρια αυτων και μεγαλυνουσιν τα κρασπεδα      `And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments,     omnia vero opera sua faciunt ut videantur ab hominibus dilatant enim phylacteria sua et magnificant fimbrias
 
6.    and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,     And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,     φιλουσιν δε την πρωτοκλισιαν εν τοις δειπνοις και τας πρωτοκαθεδριας εν ταις συναγωγαις     they love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues,     amant autem primos recubitus in cenis et primas cathedras in synagogis
 
7.    the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called 'Rabbi, Rabbi' by men.     And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.     και τους ασπασμους εν ταις αγοραις και καλεισθαι υπο των ανθρωπων ραββι     and the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.     et salutationes in foro et vocari ab hominibus rabbi
 
8.    But don't you be called 'Rabbi,' for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.     But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.     υμεις δε μη κληθητε ραββι εις γαρ εστιν υμων ο διδασκαλοσ  παντες δε υμεις αδελφοι εστε     `And ye -- ye may not be called Rabbi, for one is your director -- the Christ, and all ye are brethren;     vos autem nolite vocari rabbi unus enim est magister vester omnes autem vos fratres estis
 
9.    Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.     And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.     και πατερα μη καλεσητε υμων επι της γης εις γαρ εστιν  υμων ο πατηρ ο ουρανιοσ     and ye may not call any your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens,     et patrem nolite vocare vobis super terram unus enim est Pater vester qui in caelis est
 
10.    Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ.     Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.     μηδε κληθητε καθηγηται οτι καθηγητησ υμων εστιν εισ  ο χριστος     nor may ye be called directors, for one is your director -- the Christ.     nec vocemini magistri quia magister vester unus est Christus
 
11.    But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.     But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.     ο δε μειζων υμων εσται υμων διακονος     And the greater of you shall be your ministrant,     qui maior est vestrum erit minister vester
 
12.    Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.     And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.     οστις δε υψωσει εαυτον ταπεινωθησεται και οστις ταπεινωσει εαυτον υψωθησεται     and whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.     qui autem se exaltaverit humiliabitur et qui se humiliaverit exaltabitur
 
13.    "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows' houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.     But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.     ουαι δε υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι κλειετε την βασιλειαν των ουρανων εμπροσθεν των ανθρωπων υμεις γαρ ουκ εισερχεσθε ουδε τους εισερχομενους αφιετε εισελθειν     `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter.     vae autem vobis scribae et Pharisaei hypocritae quia clauditis regnum caelorum ante homines vos enim non intratis nec introeuntes sinitis intrare
 
14.    "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don't enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter.{Some Greek manuscripts reverse the order of verses 13 and 14, and some omit verse 13, numbering verse 14 as 13.}     Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.         `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment.     vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei hypocritae quia circuitis mare et aridam ut faciatis unum proselytum et cum fuerit factus facitis eum filium gehennae duplo quam vos
 
15.    Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much of a son of Gehenna{or, Hell} as yourselves.     Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.     ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι περιαγετε την θαλασσαν και την ξηραν ποιησαι ενα προσηλυτον και οταν γενηται ποιειτε αυτον υιον γεεννης διπλοτερον υμων     `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen -- ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.     vae vobis duces caeci qui dicitis quicumque iuraverit per templum nihil est qui autem iuraverit in aurum templi debet
 
16.    "Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.'     Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!     ουαι υμιν οδηγοι τυφλοι οι λεγοντες ος αν ομοση εν τω ναω ουδεν εστιν ος δ αν ομοση εν τω χρυσω του ναου οφειλει     `Wo to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary -- is debtor!     stulti et caeci quid enim maius est aurum an templum quod sanctificat aurum
 
17.    You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?     Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?     μωροι και τυφλοι τις γαρ μειζων εστιν ο χρυσος η ο ναος ο αγιασασ τον χρυσον     Fools and blind! for which is greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold?     et quicumque iuraverit in altari nihil est quicumque autem iuraverit in dono quod est super illud debet
 
18.    'Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated?'     And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.     και ος αν ομοση εν τω θυσιαστηριω ουδεν εστιν ος δ αν ομοση εν τω δωρω τω επανω αυτου οφειλει     `And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it -- is debtor!     caeci quid enim maius est donum an altare quod sanctificat donum
 
19.    You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?     Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?     τυφλοι τι γαρ μειζον το δωρον η το θυσιαστηριον το αγιαζον το δωρον     Fools and blind! for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift?     qui ergo iurat in altare iurat in eo et in omnibus quae super illud sunt
 
20.    He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it, and by everything on it.     Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.     ο ουν ομοσας εν τω θυσιαστηριω ομνυει εν αυτω και εν πασι τοις επανω αυτου     `He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it;     et qui iuraverit in templo iurat in illo et in eo qui inhabitat in ipso
 
21.    He who swears by the temple, swears by it, and by him who was living in it.     And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.     και ο ομοσας εν τω ναω ομνυει εν αυτω και εν τω κατοικουντι αυτον     and he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it;     et qui iurat in caelo iurat in throno Dei et in eo qui sedet super eum
 
22.    He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits on it.     And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.     και ο ομοσας εν τω ουρανω ομνυει εν τω θρονω του θεου και εν τω καθημενω επανω αυτου     and he who did swear by the heaven, doth swear by the throne of God, and by Him who is sitting upon it.     vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei hypocritae quia decimatis mentam et anethum et cyminum et reliquistis quae graviora sunt legis iudicium et misericordiam et fidem haec oportuit facere et illa non omittere
 
23.    "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin,{ cumin is an aromatic seed from Cuminum cyminum, resembling caraway in flavor and appearance. It is used as a spice.} and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.     Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.     ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι αποδεκατουτε το ηδυοσμον και το ανηθον και το κυμινον και αφηκατε τα βαρυτερα του νομου την κρισιν και το ελεοσ και την πιστιν ταυτα [δε] εδει ποιησαι κακεινα μη αφιεναι     `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law -- the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved you to do, and those not to neglect.     duces caeci excolantes culicem camelum autem gluttientes
 
24.    You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!     Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.     οδηγοι τυφλοι οι διυλιζοντες τον κωνωπα την δε καμηλον καταπινοντες     `Blind guides! who are straining out the gnat, and the camel are swallowing.     vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei hypocritae quia mundatis quod de foris est calicis et parapsidis intus autem pleni sunt rapina et inmunditia
 
25.    "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness.{TR reads "self-indulgence" instead of "unrighteousness"}     Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.     ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι καθαριζετε το εξωθεν του ποτηριου και της παροψιδος εσωθεν δε γεμουσιν εξ αρπαγης και ακρασιασ     `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence.     Pharisaee caece munda prius quod intus est calicis et parapsidis ut fiat et id quod de foris est mundum
 
26.    You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.     Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.     φαρισαιε τυφλε καθαρισον πρωτον το εντος του ποτηριου  ινα γενηται και το εκτος αυτου καθαρον     `Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean.     vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei hypocritae quia similes estis sepulchris dealbatis quae a foris parent hominibus speciosa intus vero plena sunt ossibus mortuorum et omni spurcitia
 
27.    "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.     Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.     ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι παρομοιαζετε ταφοις κεκονιαμενοις οιτινες εξωθεν μεν φαινονται ωραιοι εσωθεν δε γεμουσιν οστεων νεκρων και πασης ακαθαρσιας     `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness;     sic et vos a foris quidem paretis hominibus iusti intus autem pleni estis hypocrisi et iniquitate
 
28.    Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.     Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.     ουτως και υμεις εξωθεν μεν φαινεσθε τοις ανθρωποις δικαιοι εσωθεν δε εστε μεστοι υποκρισεως και ανομιας     so also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.     vae vobis scribae et Pharisaei hypocritae quia aedificatis sepulchra prophetarum et ornatis monumenta iustorum
 
29.    "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and decorate the tombs of the righteous,     Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,     ουαι υμιν γραμματεις και φαρισαιοι υποκριται οτι οικοδομειτε τους ταφους των προφητων και κοσμειτε τα μνημεια των δικαιων     `Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,     et dicitis si fuissemus in diebus patrum nostrorum non essemus socii eorum in sanguine prophetarum
 
30.    and say, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn't have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.'     And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.     και λεγετε ει ημεθα εν ταις ημεραις των πατερων ημων ουκ αν ημεθα  αυτων κοινωνοι εν τω αιματι των προφητων     and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.     itaque testimonio estis vobismet ipsis quia filii estis eorum qui prophetas occiderunt
 
31.    Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.     Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.     ωστε μαρτυρειτε εαυτοις οτι υιοι εστε των φονευσαντων τους προφητας     So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;     et vos implete mensuram patrum vestrorum
 
32.    Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.     Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.     και υμεις πληρωσατε το μετρον των πατερων υμων     and ye -- ye fill up the measure of your fathers.     serpentes genimina viperarum quomodo fugietis a iudicio gehennae
 
33.    You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna{or, Hell}?     Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?     οφεις γεννηματα εχιδνων πως φυγητε απο της κρισεως της γεεννης     `Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?     ideo ecce ego mitto ad vos prophetas et sapientes et scribas ex illis occidetis et crucifigetis et ex eis flagellabitis in synagogis vestris et persequemini de civitate in civitatem
 
34.    Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city;     Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:     δια τουτο ιδου εγω αποστελλω προς υμας προφητας και σοφους και γραμματεις εξ αυτων αποκτενειτε και σταυρωσετε και εξ αυτων μαστιγωσετε εν ταις συναγωγαις υμων και διωξετε απο πολεως εις πολιν     `Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city;     ut veniat super vos omnis sanguis iustus qui effusus est super terram a sanguine Abel iusti usque ad sanguinem Zacchariae filii Barachiae quem occidistis inter templum et altare
 
35.    that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.     That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.     οπως ελθη εφ υμας παν αιμα δικαιον εκχυννομενον επι της γης απο του αιματος αβελ του δικαιου εως του αιματος ζαχαριου υιου βαραχιου ον εφονευσατε μεταξυ του ναου και του θυσιαστηριου     that on you may come all the righteous blood being poured out on the earth from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar:     amen dico vobis venient haec omnia super generationem istam
 
36.    Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.     Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.     αμην λεγω υμιν ηξει ταυτα παντα επι την γενεαν ταυτην     verily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.     Hierusalem Hierusalem quae occidis prophetas et lapidas eos qui ad te missi sunt quotiens volui congregare filios tuos quemadmodum gallina congregat pullos suos sub alas et noluisti
 
37.    "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!     O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!     ιερουσαλημ ιερουσαλημ η αποκτεινουσα τους προφητας και λιθοβολουσα τους απεσταλμενους προς αυτην ποσακις ηθελησα επισυναγαγειν τα τεκνα σου ον τροπον ορνις επισυναγει τα νοσσια αυτησ υπο τας πτερυγας και ουκ ηθελησατε     `Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will.     ecce relinquitur vobis domus vestra deserta
 
38.    Behold, your house is left to you desolate.     Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.     ιδου αφιεται υμιν ο οικος υμων ερημος     Lo, left desolate to you is your house;     dico enim vobis non me videbitis amodo donec dicatis benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini
 
39.    For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!'"{Psalm 118:26}     For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.     λεγω γαρ υμιν ου μη με ιδητε απ αρτι εως αν ειπητε ευλογημενος ο ερχομενος εν ονοματι κυριου     for I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord.`
