1.    Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain. 13.    "You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.     Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.     υμεις εστε το αλας της γης εαν δε το αλας μωρανθη εν τινι αλισθησεται εις ουδεν ισχυει ετι ει μη βληθεν εξω καταπατεισθαι υπο των ανθρωπων     `Ye are the salt of the land, but if the salt may lose savour, in what shall it be salted? for nothing is it good henceforth, except to be cast without, and to be trodden down by men.     vos estis sal terrae quod si sal evanuerit in quo sallietur ad nihilum valet ultra nisi ut mittatur foras et conculcetur ab hominibus

15.    Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house.     Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.     ουδε καιουσιν λυχνον και τιθεασιν αυτον υπο τον μοδιον αλλ επι την λυχνιαν και λαμπει πασιν τοις εν τη οικια     nor do they light a lamp, and put it under the measure, but on the lamp-stand, and it shineth to all those in the house;     neque accendunt lucernam et ponunt eam sub modio sed super candelabrum ut luceat omnibus qui in domo sunt

18.    For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter{literally, iota} or one tiny pen stroke{or, serif} shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished.     For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.     αμην γαρ λεγω υμιν εως αν παρελθη ο ουρανος και η γη ιωτα εν η μια κεραια ου μη παρελθη απο του νομου εως αν παντα γενηται     for, verily I say to you, till that the heaven and the earth may pass away, one iota or one tittle may not pass away from the law, till that all may come to pass.     amen quippe dico vobis donec transeat caelum et terra iota unum aut unus apex non praeteribit a lege donec omnia fiant

20.    For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.     For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.     λεγω γαρ υμιν οτι εαν μη περισσευση υμων η δικαιοσυνη πλειον των γραμματεων και φαρισαιων ου μη εισελθητε εις την βασιλειαν των ουρανων     `For I say to you, that if your righteousness may not abound above that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye may not enter to the reign of the heavens.     dico enim vobis quia nisi abundaverit iustitia vestra plus quam scribarum et Pharisaeorum non intrabitis in regnum caelorum
 
21.    "You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, 'You shall not murder;'{Exodus 20:13} and 'Whoever shall murder shall be in danger of the judgment.'     Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:     ηκουσατε οτι ερρεθη τοις αρχαιοις ου φονευσεις ος δ αν φονευση ενοχος εσται τη κρισει     `Ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not kill, and whoever may kill shall be in danger of the judgment;     audistis quia dictum est antiquis non occides qui autem occiderit reus erit iudicio
 
22.    But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause{NU omits "without a cause".} shall be in danger of the judgment; and whoever shall say to his brother, 'Raca{"Raca" is an Aramaic insult, related to the word for "empty" and conveying the idea of empty-headedness.}!' shall be in danger of the council; and whoever shall say, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.{or, Hell}     But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.     εγω δε λεγω υμιν οτι πας ο οργιζομενος τω αδελφω αυτου ενοχος εσται τη κρισει ος δ αν ειπη τω αδελφω αυτου ρακα ενοχος εσται τω συνεδριω ος δ αν ειπη μωρε ενοχος εσται εις την γεενναν του πυρος     but I -- I say to you, that every one who is angry at his brother without cause, shall be in danger of the judgment, and whoever may say to his brother, Empty fellow! shall be in danger of the sanhedrim, and whoever may say, Rebel! shall be in danger of the gehenna of the fire.     ego autem dico vobis quia omnis qui irascitur fratri suo reus erit iudicio qui autem dixerit fratri suo racha reus erit concilio qui autem dixerit fatue reus erit gehennae ignis
 
23.    "If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you,     Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;     εαν ουν προσφερης το δωρον σου επι το θυσιαστηριον  κακει μνησθης οτι ο αδελφος σου εχει τι κατα σου     `If, therefore, thou mayest bring thy gift to the altar, and there mayest remember that thy brother hath anything against thee,     si ergo offeres munus tuum ad altare et ibi recordatus fueris quia frater tuus habet aliquid adversum te
 
24.    leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.     Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.     αφες εκει το δωρον σου εμπροσθεν του θυσιαστηριου και υπαγε πρωτον διαλλαγηθι τω αδελφω σου και τοτε ελθων προσφερε το δωρον σου     leave there thy gift before the altar, and go -- first be reconciled to thy brother, and then having come bring thy gift.     relinque ibi munus tuum ante altare et vade prius reconciliare fratri tuo et tunc veniens offers munus tuum
 
25.    Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are with him in the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.     Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.     ισθι ευνοων τω αντιδικω σου ταχυ εως οτου ει μετ αυτου εν τη οδω  μηποτε σε παραδω ο αντιδικος τω κριτη και ο κριτης  τω υπηρετη και εις φυλακην βληθηση     `Be agreeing with thy opponent quickly, while thou art in the way with him, that the opponent may not deliver thee to the judge, and the judge may deliver thee to the officer, and to prison thou mayest be cast,     esto consentiens adversario tuo cito dum es in via cum eo ne forte tradat te adversarius iudici et iudex tradat te ministro et in carcerem mittaris
 
26.    Most certainly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there, until you have paid the last penny.{literally, kodrantes. A kodrantes was a small copper coin worth about 2 lepta (widow's mites)--not enough to buy very much of anything.}     Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.     αμην λεγω σοι ου μη εξελθης εκειθεν εως αν αποδως τον εσχατον κοδραντην     verily I say to thee, thou mayest not come forth thence till that thou mayest pay the last farthing.     amen dico tibi non exies inde donec reddas novissimum quadrantem
 
27.    "You have heard that it was said, {TR adds "to the ancients,"} 'You shall not commit adultery;'{Exodus 20:14}     Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:     ηκουσατε οτι ερρεθη  ου μοιχευσεις     `Ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not commit adultery;     audistis quia dictum est antiquis non moechaberis
 
28.    but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.     But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.     εγω δε λεγω υμιν οτι πας ο βλεπων γυναικα προς το επιθυμησαι αυτην ηδη εμοιχευσεν αυτην εν τη καρδια αυτου     but I -- I say to you, that every one who is looking on a woman to desire her, did already commit adultery with her in his heart.     ego autem dico vobis quoniam omnis qui viderit mulierem ad concupiscendum eam iam moechatus est eam in corde suo
 
29.    If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. 32.    but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery.     But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.     εγω δε λεγω υμιν οτι πασ ο απολυων την γυναικα αυτου παρεκτος λογου πορνειας ποιει αυτην μοιχευθηναι και ος εαν απολελυμενην γαμηση μοιχαται     but I -- I say to you, that whoever may put away his wife, save for the matter of whoredom, doth make her to commit adultery; and whoever may marry her who hath been put away doth commit adultery.     ego autem dico vobis quia omnis qui dimiserit uxorem suam excepta fornicationis causa facit eam moechari et qui dimissam duxerit adulterat
 
33.    "Again you have heard that it was said to them of old time, 'You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to the Lord your vows,'     Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:     παλιν ηκουσατε οτι ερρεθη τοις αρχαιοις ουκ επιορκησεις αποδωσεις δε τω κυριω τους ορκους σου     `Again, ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not swear falsely, but thou shalt pay to the Lord thine oaths;     iterum audistis quia dictum est antiquis non peierabis reddes autem Domino iuramenta tua
 
34.    but I tell you, don't swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;     But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:     εγω δε λεγω υμιν μη ομοσαι ολως μητε εν τω ουρανω οτι θρονος εστιν του θεου     but I -- I say to you, not to swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is the throne of God,     ego autem dico vobis non iurare omnino neque per caelum quia thronus Dei est
 
35.    nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.     Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.     μητε εν τη γη οτι υποποδιον εστιν των ποδων αυτου μητε εις ιεροσολυμα οτι πολις εστιν του μεγαλου βασιλεως     nor by the earth, because it is His footstool, nor by Jerusalem, because it is a city of a great king,     neque per terram quia scabillum est pedum eius neque per Hierosolymam quia civitas est magni Regis
 
36.    Neither shall you swear by your head, for you can't make one hair white or black.     Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.     μητε εν τη κεφαλη σου ομοσης οτι ου δυνασαι μιαν τριχα λευκην ποιησαι η μελαιναν     nor by thy head mayest thou swear, because thou art not able one hair to make white or black;     neque per caput tuum iuraveris quia non potes unum capillum album facere aut nigrum
 
37.    But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes' and your 'No' be 'No.' Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.     But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.     εστω δε ο λογος υμων ναι ναι ου ου το δε περισσον τουτων εκ του πονηρου εστιν     but let your word be, Yes, Yes, No, No, and that which is more than these is of the evil.     sit autem sermo vester est est non non quod autem his abundantius est a malo est
 
38.    "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.'{Exodus 21:24; Leviticus 24:20; Deuteronomy 19:21}     Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:     ηκουσατε οτι ερρεθη οφθαλμον αντι οφθαλμου και οδοντα αντι οδοντος     `Ye heard that it was said: Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth;     audistis quia dictum est oculum pro oculo et dentem pro dente
 
39.    But I tell you, don't resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.     But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.     εγω δε λεγω υμιν μη αντιστηναι τω πονηρω αλλ οστις σε ραπιζει εισ την δεξιαν  σιαγονα [σου] στρεψον αυτω και την αλλην     but I -- I say to you, not to resist the evil, but whoever shall slap thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other;     ego autem dico vobis non resistere malo sed si quis te percusserit in dextera maxilla tua praebe illi et alteram
 
40.    If anyone sues you to take away your coat, let him have your cloak also.     And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.     και τω θελοντι σοι κριθηναι και τον χιτωνα σου λαβειν αφες αυτω και το ιματιον     and whoever is willing to take thee to law, and thy coat to take -- suffer to him also the cloak.     et ei qui vult tecum iudicio contendere et tunicam tuam tollere remitte ei et pallium
 
41.    Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.     And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.     και οστις σε αγγαρευσει μιλιον εν υπαγε μετ αυτου δυο     `And whoever shall impress thee one mile, go with him two,     et quicumque te angariaverit mille passus vade cum illo alia duo
 
42.    Give to him who asks you, and don't turn away him who desires to borrow from you.     Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.     τω αιτουντι σε δοσ και τον θελοντα απο σου δανισασθαι μη αποστραφης     to him who is asking of thee be giving, and him who is willing to borrow from thee thou mayest not turn away.     qui petit a te da ei et volenti mutuari a te ne avertaris
 
43.    "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor,{Leviticus 19:18} and hate your enemy.{not in the Bible, but see Qumran Manual of Discipline Ix, 21-26}'     Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy.     ηκουσατε οτι ερρεθη αγαπησεις τον πλησιον σου και μισησεις τον εχθρον σου     `Ye heard that it was said: Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and shalt hate thine enemy;     audistis quia dictum est diliges proximum tuum et odio habebis inimicum tuum
 
44.    But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,     But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;     εγω δε λεγω υμιν αγαπατε τους εχθρους υμων      και προσευχεσθε υπερ των  διωκοντων υμας     but I -- I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those cursing you, do good to those hating you, and pray for those accusing you falsely, and persecuting you,     ego autem dico vobis diligite inimicos vestros benefacite his qui oderunt vos et orate pro persequentibus et calumniantibus vos
 
45.    that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.     That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.     οπως γενησθε υιοι του πατρος υμων του εν ουρανοις οτι τον ηλιον αυτου ανατελλει επι πονηρους και αγαθους και βρεχει επι δικαιους και αδικους     that ye may be sons of your Father in the heavens, because His sun He doth cause to rise on evil and good, and He doth send rain on righteous and unrighteous.     ut sitis filii Patris vestri qui in caelis est qui solem suum oriri facit super bonos et malos et pluit super iustos et iniustos
 
46.    For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don't even the tax collectors do the same?     For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?     εαν γαρ αγαπησητε τους αγαπωντας υμας τινα μισθον εχετε ουχι και οι τελωναι το αυτο ποιουσιν     `For, if ye may love those loving you, what reward have ye? do not also the tax-gatherers the same?     si enim diligatis eos qui vos diligunt quam mercedem habebitis nonne et publicani hoc faciunt
 
47.    If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don't even the tax collectors do the same?     And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?     και εαν ασπασησθε τους αδελφουσ υμων μονον τι περισσον ποιειτε ουχι και οι εθνικοι το αυτο  ποιουσιν     and if ye may salute your brethren only, what do ye abundant? do not also the tax-gatherers so?     et si salutaveritis fratres vestros tantum quid amplius facitis nonne et ethnici hoc faciunt
 
48.    Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.     Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.     εσεσθε ουν υμεις τελειοι ωσ ο πατηρ υμων ο ουρανιοσ  τελειος εστιν     ye shall therefore be perfect, as your Father who is in the heavens is perfect.     estote ergo vos perfecti sicut et Pater vester caelestis perfectus est
