| 3. * | اقرا وربك الاكرم | aqra wrbk alakrm | Read and/by your Lord, the most honoured/generous. | Read, and your Lord, Most Exalted. | Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,- | ||||
| 4. * | الذي علم بالقلم | alXy `lm balqlm | Who taught/instructed by the pen/writing utensil. | Teaches by means of the pen. | He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- | ||||
| 5. * | علم الانسان مالم يعلم | `lm alansan malm y`lm | He taught/instructed the human/mankind what he did not know. | He teaches man what he never knew. | Taught man that which he knew not. | ||||
| 6. * | كلا ان الانسان ليطغى | kla an alansan lyTGi | No but that truly the human/mankind tyrannizes/exceeds the limit (E). | Indeed, the human transgresses. | Day, but man doth transgress all bounds, | ||||
| 7. * | ان راه استغنى | an rah astGni | That (E) he saw/understood him(self), he enriched/sufficed (himself). | When he becomes rich. | In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient. | ||||
| 8. * | ان الى ربك الرجعى | an ali rbk alrj`i | That truly to your Lord (is) the return. | To your Lord is the ultimate destiny. | Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all). | ||||
| 9. * | ارايت الذي ينهى | arayt alXy ynhi | Did you see/understand who forbids/prevents? | Have you seen the one who enjoins. | Seest thou one who forbids- | ||||
| 10. * | عبدا اذا صلى | `bda aXa Sli | A worshipper/servant/slave when/if he prayed ? | Others from praying? | A votary when he (turns) to pray? | ||||
| 11. * | ارايت ان كان على الهدى | arayt an kan `li alhdi | Did you see/understand if he was on the guidance? | Is it not better for him to follow the guidance? | Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?- | ||||
| 12. * | او امر بالتقوى | aw amr baltqwi | Or he ordered/commanded with the fear and obedience of God? | Or advocate righteousness? | Or enjoins Righteousness? | ||||
| 13. * | ارايت ان كذب وتولى | arayt an kXb wtwli | Did you see/understand if he lied/denied/falsified and he turned away? | If he disbelieves and turns away. | Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away? | ||||
| 14. * | الم يعلم بان الله يرى | alm y`lm ban allh yri | Does he not know with that (E) God sees/understands? | Does he not realize that GOD sees? | Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? | ||||
| 15. * | كلا لئن لم ينته لنسفعا بالناصية | kla lYn lm ynth lnsf`a balnaSy+ | No but if (E) he does not end/terminate/stop, We will pull and strike (E) by the forehead/forehead's hair. | Indeed, unless he refrains, we will take him by the forelock. | Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,- | ||||
| 16. * | ناصية كاذبة خاطئة | naSy+ kaXb+ KaTY+ | A lying/denying/falsifying, sinning/erring/wronging forehead/forehead's hair. | A forelock that is disbelieving and sinful. | A lying, sinful forelock! | ||||
| 17. * | فليدع ناديه | flyd` nadyh | So he should call his caller. | Let him then call on his helpers. | Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades): | ||||
| 18. * | سندع الزبانية | snd` alzbany+ | We will call the strong ones/patrol force/Elzabaneya angels. | We will call the guardians of Hell. | We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)! | ||||
| 19. * | كلا لاتطعه واسجد واقترب | kla latT`h wasjd waqtrb | No but do not obey him, and prostrate and near/approach (to Me). | You shall not obey him; you shall fall prostrate and draw nearer. | Day, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah.! | ||||
