כי־תשב ללחום את־מושל בין תבין את־אשר לפניך׃ |
When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee: | When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you; | When you take your seat at the feast with a ruler, give thought with care to what is before you; | |||

ושמת שכין בלעך אם־בעל נפש אתה׃ |
And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite. | put a knife to your throat, if you are a man given to appetite. | And put a knife to your throat, if you have a strong desire for food. | |||
3. |
אל־תתאו למטעמותיו והוא לחם כזבים׃ |
Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat. | Don't be desirous of his dainties, seeing they are deceitful food. | Have no desire for his delicate food, for it is the bread of deceit. | |||
4. |
אל־תיגע להעשיר מבינתך חדל׃ |
Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. | Don't weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint. | Take no care to get wealth; let there be an end to your desire for money. | |||
5. |
התעוף עיניך בו ואיננו כי עשה יעשה־לו כנפים כנשר ועיף השמים׃ |
Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. | Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky. | Are your eyes lifted up to it? it is gone: for wealth takes to itself wings, like an eagle in flight up to heaven. | |||

אל־תלחם את־לחם רע עין ואל־תתאו למטעמתיו׃ |
Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: | Don't eat the food of him who has a stingy eye, and don't crave his delicacies: | Do not take the food of him who has an evil eye, or have any desire for his delicate meat: | |||

כי כמו־שער בנפשו כן־הוא אכל ושתה יאמר לך ולבו בל־עמך׃ |
For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. | for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. "Eat and drink!" he says to you, but his heart is not with you. | For as the thoughts of his heart are, so is he: Take food and drink, he says to you; but his heart is not with you. | |||

פתך־אכלת תקיאנה ושחת דבריך הנעימים׃ |
The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words. | The morsel which you have eaten you shall vomit up, and lose your good words. | The food which you have taken will come up again, and your pleasing words will be wasted. | |||

באזני כסיל אל־תדבר כי־יבוז לשכל מליך׃ |
Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words. | Don't speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words. | Say nothing in the hearing of a foolish man, for he will put no value on the wisdom of your words. | |||

אל־תסג גבול עולם ובשדי יתומים אל־תבא׃ |
Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: | Don't move the ancient boundary stone. Don't encroach on the fields of the fatherless: | Do not let the landmark of the widow be moved, and do not go into the fields of those who have no father; | |||
11. |
כי־גאלם חזק הוא־יריב את־ריבם אתך׃ |
For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee. | for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you. | For their saviour is strong, and he will take up their cause against you. | |||
12. |
הביאה למוסר לבך ואזנך לאמרי־דעת׃ |
Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge. | Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge. | Give your heart to teaching, and your ears to the words of knowledge. | |||
13. |
אל־תמנע מנער מוסר כי־תכנו בשבט לא ימות׃ |
Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. | Don't withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die. | Do not keep back training from the child: for even if you give him blows with the rod, it will not be death to him. | |||
14. |
אתה בשבט תכנו ונפשו משאול תציל׃ |
Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. | Punish him with the rod, and save his soul from Sheol{Sheol is the place of the dead.}. | Give him blows with the rod, and keep his soul safe from the underworld. | |||
15. |
בני אם־חכם לבך ישמח לבי גם־אני׃ |
My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. | My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine: | My son, if your heart becomes wise, I, even I, will be glad in heart; | |||
16. |
ותעלזנה כליותי בדבר שפתיך מישרים׃ |
Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things. | yes, my heart will rejoice, when your lips speak what is right. | And my thoughts in me will be full of joy when your lips say right things. | |||
17. |
אל־יקנא לבך בחטאים כי אם־ביראת־יהוה כל־היום׃ |
Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long. | Don't let your heart envy sinners; but rather fear Yahweh all the day long. | Have no envy of sinners in your heart, but keep in the fear of the Lord all through the day; | |||
18. |
כי אם־יש אחרית ותקותך לא תכרת׃ |
For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off. | Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off. | For without doubt there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off. | |||
19. |
שמע־אתה בני וחכם ואשר בדרך לבך׃ |
Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way. | Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path! | Give ear, my son, and be wise, guiding your heart in the right way. | |||
20. |
אל־תהי בסבאי־יין בזללי בשר למו׃ |
Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: | Don't be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat: | Do not be among those who give themselves to wine-drinking, or among those who make themselves full with meat: | |||
21. |
כי־סבא וזולל יורש וקרעים תלביש נומה׃ |
For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. | for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags. | For those who take delight in drink and feasting will come to be in need; and through love of sleep a man will be poorly clothed. | |||
22. |
שמע לאביך זה ילדך ואל־תבוז כי־זקנה אמך׃ |
Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old. | Listen to your father who gave you life, and don't despise your mother when she is old. | Give ear to your father whose child you are, and do not keep honour from your mother when she is old. | |||
23. |
אמת קנה ואל־תמכר חכמה ומוסר ובינה׃ |
Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. | Buy the truth, and don't sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding. | Get for yourself that which is true, and do not let it go for money; get wisdom and teaching and good sense. | |||
24. |
גול יגול אבי צדיק יולד חכם וישמח בו׃ |
The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him. | The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him. | The father of the upright man will be glad, and he who has a wise child will have joy because of him. | |||
25. |
ישמח־אביך ואמך ותגל יולדתך׃ |
Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice. | Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice! | Let your father and your mother be glad, let her who gave you birth have joy. | |||
26. |
תנה־בני לבך לי ועיניך דרכי תרצנה׃ |
My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways. | My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways. | My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes take delight in my ways. | |||
27. |
כי־שוחה עמקה זונה ובאר צרה נכריה׃ |
For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit. | For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well. | For a loose woman is a deep hollow, and a strange woman is a narrow water-hole. | |||

אף־היא כחתף תארב ובוגדים באדם תוסף׃ |
She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men. | Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful among men. | Yes, she is waiting secretly like a beast for its food, and deceit by her is increased among men. | |||

למי אוי למי אבוי למי מדונים למי שיח למי פצעים חנם למי חכללות עינים׃ |
Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? | Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? | Who says, Oh! who says, Ah! who has violent arguments, who has grief, who has wounds without cause, whose eyes are dark? | |||

למאחרים על־היין לבאים לחקר ממסך׃ |
They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. | Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine. | Those who are seated late over the wine: those who go looking for mixed wine. | |||
31. |
אל־תרא יין כי יתאדם כי־יתן בכיס עינו יתהלך במישרים׃ |
Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. | Don't look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. | Keep your eyes from looking on the wine when it is red, when its colour is bright in the cup, when it goes smoothly down: | |||

אחריתו כנחש ישך וכצפעני יפרש׃ |
At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. | In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper. | In the end, its bite is like that of a snake, its wound like the wound of a poison-snake. | |||
33. |
עיניך יראו זרות ולבך ידבר תהפכות׃ |
Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. | Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things. | Your eyes will see strange things, and you will say twisted things. | |||

והיית כשכב בלב־ים וכשכב בראש חבל׃ |
Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. | Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging: | Yes, you will be like him who takes his rest on the sea, or on the top of a sail-support. | |||
35. |
הכוני בל־חליתי הלמוני בל־ידעתי מתי אקיץ אוסיף אבקשנו עוד׃ |
They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again. | "They hit me, and I was not hurt! They beat me, and I don't feel it! When will I wake up? I can do it again. I can find another." | They have overcome me, you will say, and I have no pain; they gave me blows without my feeling them: when will I be awake from my wine? I will go after it again. | |||
