1.    כה  אמר  יהוה  הנני 
מעיר  על־בבל
ואל־ישבי  לב  קמי
רוח  משחית׃
    Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind;     Thus says Yahweh: Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against those who dwell in Lebkamai, a destroying wind.     The Lord has said: See, I will make a wind of destruction come up against Babylon and against those who are living in Chaldaea;
 
2.    ושלחתי  לבבל  זרים 
וזרוה  ויבקקו
את־ארצה  כי־היו
עליה  מסביב  ביום
רעה׃
    And will send unto Babylon fanners, that shall fan her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.     I will send to Babylon strangers, who shall winnow her; and they shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her around.     And I will send men to Babylon to make her clean and get her land cleared: for in the day of trouble they will put up their tents against her on every side.
 
3.    אל־ידרך  ידרך  הדרך 
קשתו  ואל־יתעל
בסרינו  ואל־תחמלו
אל־בחריה  החרימו
כל־צבאה׃
    Against him that bendeth let the archer bend his bow, and against him that lifteth himself up in his brigandine: and spare ye not her young men; destroy ye utterly all her host.     Against [him who] bends let the archer bend his bow, and against [him who] lifts himself up in his coat of mail: and don't spare her young men; utterly destroy all her army.     Against her the bow of the archer is bent, and he puts on his coat of metal: have no mercy on her young men, give all her army up to the curse.
 
4.    ונפלו  חללים  בארץ 
כשדים  ומדקרים
בחוצותיה׃
    Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and they that are thrust through in her streets.     They shall fall down slain in the land of the Chaldeans, and thrust through in her streets.     And the dead will be stretched out in the land of the Chaldaeans, and the wounded in her streets.
 
5.    כי  לא־אלמן  ישראל 
ויהודה  מאלהיו
מיהוה  צבאות  כי
ארצם  מלאה  אשם
מקדוש  ישראל׃
    For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.     For Israel is not forsaken, nor Judah, of his God, of Yahweh of Armies; though their land is full of guilt against the Holy One of Israel.     For Israel has not been given up, or Judah, by his God, by the Lord of armies; for their land is full of sin against the Holy One of Israel.
 
6.    נסו  מתוך  בבל 
ומלטו  איש  נפשו
אל־תדמו  בעונה  כי
עת  נקמה  היא  ליהוה
גמול  הוא  משלם  לה׃
    Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD's vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence.     Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and save every man his life; don't be cut off in her iniquity: for it is the time of Yahweh's vengeance; he will render to her a recompense.     Go in flight out of Babylon, so that every man may keep his life; do not be cut off in her evil-doing: for it is the time of the Lord's punishment; he will give her her reward.
 
7.    כוס־זהב  בבל 
ביד־יהוה  משכרת
כל־הארץ  מיינה  שתו

    Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD's hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.     Babylon has been a golden cup in Yahweh's hand, who made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunk of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.     Babylon has been a gold cup in the hand of the Lord, which has made all the earth overcome with wine: the nations have taken of her wine, and for this cause the nations have gone off their heads.
 
8.    פתאם  נפלה  בבל 
ותשבר  הילילו  עליה
קחו  צרי  למכאובה
אולי  תרפא׃
    Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.     Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: wail for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.     Sudden is the downfall of Babylon and her destruction: make cries of grief for her; take sweet oil for her pain, if it is possible for her to be made well.
 
9.    רפאנו  את־בבל  ולא 
נרפתה  עזבוה  ונלך
איש  לארצו  כי־נגע
אל־השמים  משפטה
ונשא  עד־שחקים׃
    We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.     We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go everyone into his own country; for her judgment reaches to heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.     We would have made Babylon well, but she is not made well: give her up, and let us go everyone to his country: for her punishment is stretching up to heaven, and lifted up even to the skies.
 
10.    הוציא  יהוה 
את־צדקתינו  באו
ונספרה  בציון
את־מעשה  יהוה
אלהינו׃
    The LORD hath brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of the LORD our God.     Yahweh has brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of Yahweh our God.     The Lord has made clear our righteousness: come, and let us give an account in Zion of the work of the Lord our God.
 
11.    הברו  החצים  מלאו 
השלטים  העיר  יהוה
את־רוח  מלכי  מדי
כי־על־בבל  מזמתו
להשחיתה  כי־נקמת
יהוה  היא  נקמת
היכלו׃
    Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the LORD hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of the LORD, the vengeance of his temple.     Make sharp the arrows; hold firm the shields: Yahweh has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes; because his purpose is against Babylon, to destroy it: for it is the vengeance of Yahweh, the vengeance of his temple.     Make bright the arrows; take up the body-covers: the Lord has been moving the spirit of the king of the Medes; because his design against Babylon is its destruction: for it is the punishment from the Lord, the payment for his Temple.
 
12.    אל־חומת  בבל 
שאו־נס  החזיקו
המשמר  הקימו  שמרים
הכינו  הארבים  כי
גם־זמם  יהוה
גם־עשה  את  אשר־דבר
אל־ישבי  בבל׃
    Set up the standard upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the LORD hath both devised and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon.     Set up a standard against the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set the watchmen, prepare the ambushes; for Yahweh has both purposed and done that which he spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.     Let the flag be lifted up against the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, put the watchmen in their places, make ready a surprise attack: for it is the Lord's purpose, and he has done what he said about the people of Babylon.
 
13.    שכנתי  על־מים  רבים 
רבת  אוצרת  בא  קצך
אמת  בצעך׃
    O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness.     You who dwell on many waters, abundant in treasures, your end has come, the measure of your covetousness.     O you whose living-place is by the wide waters, whose stores are great, your end is come, your evil profit is ended.
 
14.    נשבע  יהוה  צבאות 
בנפשו  כי
אם־מלאתיך  אדם
כילק  וענו  עליך
הידד׃
    The LORD of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill thee with men, as with caterpillers; and they shall lift up a shout against thee.     Yahweh of Armies has sworn by himself, [saying], Surely I will fill you with men, as with the canker worm; and they shall lift up a shout against you.     The Lord of armies has taken an oath by himself, saying, Truly, I will make you full with men as with locusts, and their voices will be loud against you.
 
15.    עשה  ארץ  בכחו  מכין 
תבל  בחכמתו
ובתבונתו  נטה
שמים׃
    He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding.     He has made the earth by his power, he has established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens:     He has made the earth by his power, he has made the world strong in its place by his wisdom, and by his wise design the heavens have been stretched out:
 
16.    לקול  תתו  המון  מים 
בשמים  ויעל  נשאים
מקצה־ארץ  ברקים
למטר  עשה  ויצא  רוח
מאצרתיו׃
    When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens; and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth: he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.     when he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he makes lightning for the rain, and brings forth the wind out of his treasuries.     At the sound of his voice there is a massing of the waters in the heavens, and he makes the mists go up from the ends of the earth; he makes the thunder-flames for the rain and sends out the wind from his store-houses.
 
17.    נבער  כל־אדם  מדעת 
הביש  כל־צרף  מפסל
כי  שקר  נסכו
ולא־רוח  בם׃
    Every man is brutish by his knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.     Every man is become brutish [and is] without knowledge; every goldsmith is disappointed by his image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.     Then every man becomes like a beast without knowledge; every gold-worker is put to shame by the image he has made: for his metal image is deceit, and there is no breath in them.
 
18.    הבל  המה  מעשה 
תעתעים  בעת  פקדתם
יאבדו׃
    They are vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.     They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.     They are nothing, a work of error: in the time of their punishment, destruction will overtake them.
 
19.    לא־כאלה  חלק  יעקוב 
כי־יוצר  הכל  הוא
ושבט  נחלתו  יהוה
צבאות  שמו׃
    The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things: and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: the LORD of hosts is his name.     The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the former of all things; and [Israel] is the tribe of his inheritance: Yahweh of Armies is his name.     The heritage of Jacob is not like these; for the maker of all things is his heritage: the Lord of armies is his name.
 
20.    מפץ־אתה  לי  כלי 
מלחמה  ונפצתי  בך
גוים  והשחתי  בך
ממלכות׃
    Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms;     You are my battle axe and weapons of war: and with you will I break in pieces the nations; and with you will I destroy kingdoms;     You are my fighting axe and my instrument of war: with you the nations will be broken; with you kingdoms will be broken;
 
21.    ונפצתי  בך  סוס 
ורכבו  ונפצתי  בך
רכב  ורכבו׃
    And with thee will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with thee will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider;     and with you will I break in pieces the horse and his rider;     With you the horse and the horseman will be broken; with you the war-carriage and he who goes in it will be broken;
 
22.    ונפצתי  בך  איש 
ואשה  ונפצתי  בך
זקן  ונער  ונפצתי
בך  בחור  ובתולה׃
    With thee also will I break in pieces man and woman; and with thee will I break in pieces old and young; and with thee will I break in pieces the young man and the maid;     and with you will I break in pieces the chariot and him who rides therein; and with you will I break in pieces man and woman; and with you will I break in pieces the old man and the youth; and with you will I break in pieces the young man and the virgin;     With you man and woman will be broken; with you the old man and the boy will be broken; with you the young man and the virgin will be broken;
 
23.    ונפצתי  בך  רעה 
ועדרו  ונפצתי  בך
אכר  וצמדו  ונפצתי
בך  פחות  וסגנים׃
    I will also break in pieces with thee the shepherd and his flock; and with thee will I break in pieces the husbandman and his yoke of oxen; and with thee will I break in pieces captains and rulers.     and with you will I break in pieces the shepherd and his flock; and with you will I break in pieces the farmer and his yoke [of oxen]; and with you will I break in pieces governors and deputies.     With you the keeper of sheep with his flock will be broken, and with you the farmer and his oxen will be broken, and with you captains and rulers will be broken.
 
24.    ושלמתי  לבבל  ולכל 
יושבי  כשדים  את
כל־רעתם  אשר־עשו
בציון  לעיניכם  נאם
יהוה׃
    And I will render unto Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, saith the LORD.     I will render to Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, says Yahweh.     And I will give to Babylon, and to all the people of Chaldaea, their reward for all the evil they have done in Zion before your eyes, says the Lord.
 
25.    הנני  אליך  הר 
המשחית  נאם־יהוה
המשחית  את־כל־הארץ
ונטיתי  את־ידי
עליך  וגלגלתיך
מן־הסלעים  ונתתיך
להר  שרפה׃
    Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the LORD, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain.     Behold, I am against you, destroying mountain, says Yahweh, which destroys all the earth; and I will stretch out my hand on you, and roll you down from the rocks, and will make you a burnt mountain.     See, I am against you, says the Lord, O mountain of destruction, causing the destruction of all the earth: and my hand will be stretched out on you, rolling you down from the rocks, and making you a burned mountain.
 
26.    ולא־יקחו  ממך  אבן 
לפנה  ואבן  למוסדות
כי־שממות  עולם
תהיה  נאם־  יהוה׃
    And they shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but thou shalt be desolate for ever, saith the LORD.     They shall not take of you a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but you shall be desolate for ever, says Yahweh.     And they will not take from you a stone for the angle of a wall or the base of a building; but you will be a waste place for ever, says the Lord.
 
27.    שאו־נס  בארץ  תקעו 
שופר  בגוים  קדשו
עליה  גוים  השמיעו
עליה  ממלכות  אררט
מני  ואשכנז  פקדו
עליה  טפסר
העלו־סוס  כילק
סמר׃
    Set ye up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashchenaz; appoint a captain against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough caterpillers.     Set up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz: appoint a marshal against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough canker worm.     Let a flag be lifted up in the land, let the horn be sounded among the nations, make the nations ready against her; get the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz together against her, make ready a scribe against her; let the horses come up against her like massed locusts.
 
28.    קדשו  עליה  גוים 
את־מלכי  מדי
את־פחותיה
ואת־כל־סגניה  ואת
כל־ארץ  ממשלתו׃
    Prepare against her the nations with the kings of the Medes, the captains thereof, and all the rulers thereof, and all the land of his dominion.     Prepare against her the nations, the kings of the Medes, its governors, and all its deputies, and all the land of their dominion.     Make the nations ready for war against her, the king of the Medes and his rulers and all his captains, and all the land under his rule.
 
29.    ותרעש  הארץ  ותחל 
כי  קמה  על־בבל
מחשבות  יהוה  לשום
את־ארץ  בבל  לשמה
מאין  יושב׃
    And the land shall tremble and sorrow: for every purpose of the LORD shall be performed against Babylon, to make the land of Babylon a desolation without an inhabitant.     The land trembles and is in pain; for the purposes of Yahweh against Babylon do stand, to make the land of Babylon a desolation, without inhabitant.     And the land is shaking and in pain: for the purposes of the Lord are fixed, to make the land of Babylon an unpeopled waste.
 
30.    חדלו  גבורי  בבל 
להלחם  ישבו  במצדות
נשתה  גבורתם  היו
לנשים  הציתו
משכנתיה  נשברו
בריחיה׃
    The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.     The mighty men of Babylon have forborne to fight, they remain in their strongholds; their might has failed; they are become as women: her dwelling places are set on fire; her bars are broken.     Babylon's men of war have kept back from the fight, waiting in their strong places; their strength has given way, they have become like women: her houses have been put on fire, her locks are broken.
 
31.    רץ  לקראת־רץ  ירוץ 
ומגיד  לקראת  מגיד
להגיד  למלך  בבל
כי־נלכדה  עירו
מקצה׃
    One post shall run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to shew the king of Babylon that his city is taken at one end,     One runner will run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to show the king of Babylon that his city is taken on every quarter:     One man, running, will give word to another, and one who goes with news will be handing it on to another, to give word to the king of Babylon that his town has been taken from every quarter:
 
32.    והמעברות  נתפשו 
ואת־האגמים  שרפו
באש  ואנשי  המלחמה
נבהלו׃
    And that the passages are stopped, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are affrighted.     and the passages are seized, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are frightened.     And the ways across the river have been taken, and the water-holes ... burned with fire, and the men of war are in the grip of fear.
 
33.    כי  כה  אמר  יהוה 
צבאות  אלהי  ישראל
בת־בבל  כגרן  עת
הדריכה  עוד  מעט
ובאה  עת־הקציר  לה׃
    For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; The daughter of Babylon is like a threshingfloor, it is time to thresh her: yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come.     For thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time when it is trodden; yet a little while, and the time of harvest shall come for her.     For these are the words of the Lord of armies, the God of Israel: The daughter of Babylon is like a grain-floor when it is stamped down; before long, the time of her grain-cutting will come.
 
34.    אכלנו  הממנו 
נבוכדראצר  מלך  בבל
הציגנו  כלי  ריק
בלענו  כתנין  מלא
כרשו  מעדני
הדיחנו׃
    Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured me, he hath crushed me, he hath made me an empty vessel, he hath swallowed me up like a dragon, he hath filled his belly with my delicates, he hath cast me out.     Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me, he has crushed me, he has made me an empty vessel, he has, like a monster, swallowed me up, he has filled his maw with my delicacies; he has cast me out.     Nebuchadrezzar, king of Babylon, has made a meal of me, violently crushing me, he has made me a vessel with nothing in it, he has taken me in his mouth like a dragon, he has made his stomach full with my delicate flesh, crushing me with his teeth.
 
35.    חמסי  ושארי  על־בבל 
תאמר  ישבת  ציון
ודמי  אל־ישבי
כשדים  תאמר
ירושלם׃
    The violence done to me and to my flesh be upon Babylon, shall the inhabitant of Zion say; and my blood upon the inhabitants of Chaldea, shall Jerusalem say.     The violence done to me and to my flesh be on Babylon, shall the inhabitant of Zion say; and, My blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea, shall Jerusalem say.     May the violent things done to me, and my downfall, come on Babylon, the daughter of Zion will say; and, May my blood be on the people of Chaldaea, Jerusalem will say.
 
36.    לכן  כה  אמר  יהוה 
הנני־רב  את־ריבך
ונקמתי  את־נקמתך
והחרבתי  את־  ימה
והבשתי  את־מקורה׃
    Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will plead thy cause, and take vengeance for thee; and I will dry up her sea, and make her springs dry.     Therefore thus says Yahweh: Behold, I will plead your cause, and take vengeance for you; and I will dry up her sea, and make her fountain dry.     For this reason the Lord has said: See, I will give support to your cause, and take payment for what you have undergone; I will make her sea dry, and her fountain without water.
 
37.    והיתה  בבל  לגלים 
מעון־תנים  שמה
ושרקה  מאין  יושב׃
    And Babylon shall become heaps, a dwellingplace for dragons, an astonishment, and an hissing, without an inhabitant.     Babylon shall become heaps, a dwelling place for jackals, an astonishment, and a hissing, without inhabitant.     And Babylon will become a mass of broken walls, a hole for jackals, a cause of wonder and surprise, without a living man in it.
 
38.    יחדו  ככפרים  ישאגו 
נערו  כגורי  אריות׃
    They shall roar together like lions: they shall yell as lions' whelps.     They shall roar together like young lions; they shall growl as lions' cubs.     They will be crying out together like lions, their voices will be like the voices of young lions.
 
39.    בחמם  אשית 
את־משתיהם
והשכרתים  למען
יעלזו  וישנו
שנת־עולם  ולא
יקיצו  נאם  יהוה׃
    In their heat I will make their feasts, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the LORD.     When they are heated, I will make their feast, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, says Yahweh.     When they are heated, I will make a feast for them, and overcome them with wine, so that they may become unconscious, sleeping an eternal sleep without awaking, says the Lord.
 
40.    אורידם  ככרים 
לטבוח  כאילים
עם־עתודים׃
    I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he goats.     I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with male goats.     I will make them go down to death like lambs, like he-goats together.
 
41.    איך  נלכדה  ששך 
ותתפש  תהלת
כל־הארץ  איך  היתה
לשמה  בבל  בגוים׃
    How is Sheshach taken! and how is the praise of the whole earth surprised! how is Babylon become an astonishment among the nations!     How is Sheshach taken! and the praise of the whole earth seized! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!     How is Babylon taken! and the praise of all the earth surprised! how has Babylon become a cause of wonder among the nations!
 
42.    עלה  על־בבל  הים 
בהמון  גליו  נכסתה׃
    The sea is come up upon Babylon: she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof.     The sea is come up on Babylon; she is covered with the multitude of its waves.     The sea has come up over Babylon; she is covered with the mass of its waves.
 
43.    היו  עריה  לשמה  ארץ 
ציה  וערבה  ארץ
לא־ישב  בהן  כל־איש
ולא־יעבר  בהן
בן־אדם׃
    Her cities are a desolation, a dry land, and a wilderness, a land wherein no man dwelleth, neither doth any son of man pass thereby.     Her cities are become a desolation, a dry land, and a desert, a land in which no man dwells, neither does any son of man pass thereby.     Her towns have become a waste, a dry and unwatered land, where no man has his living-place and no son of man goes by.
 
44.    ופקדתי  על־בל  בבבל 
והצאתי  את־בלעו
מפיו  ולא־ינהרו
אליו  עוד  גוים
גם־חומת  בבל  נפלה׃
    And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him: yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall.     I will execute judgment on Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he has swallowed up; and the nations shall not flow any more to him: yes, the wall of Babylon shall fall.     And I will send punishment on Bel in Babylon, and take out of his mouth what went into it; no longer will the nations be flowing together to him: truly, the wall of Babylon will come down.
 
45.    צאו  מתוכה  עמי 
ומלטו  איש  את־נפשו
מחרון  אף־יהוה׃
    My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the LORD.     My people, go away from the midst of her, and save yourselves every man from the fierce anger of Yahweh.     My people, go out from her, and let every man get away safe from the burning wrath of the Lord.
 
46.    ופן־ירך  לבבכם 
ותיראו  בשמועה
הנשמעת  בארץ  ובא
בשנה  השמועה
ואחריו  בשנה
השמועה  וחמס  בארץ
ומשל  על־משל׃
    And lest your heart faint, and ye fear for the rumour that shall be heard in the land; a rumour shall both come one year, and after that in another year shall come a rumour, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.     Don't let your heart faint, neither fear for the news that shall be heard in the land; for news shall come one year, and after that in another year [shall come] news, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.     So that your hearts may not become feeble and full of fear because of the news which will go about in the land; for a story will go about one year, and after that in another year another story, and violent acts in the land, ruler against ruler.
 
47.    לכן  הנה  ימים  באים 
ופקדתי  על־פסילי
בבל  וכל־ארצה  תבוש
וכל־  חלליה  יפלו
בתוכה׃
    Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will do judgment upon the graven images of Babylon: and her whole land shall be confounded, and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.     Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will execute judgment on the engraved images of Babylon; and her whole land shall be confounded; and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.     For this cause, truly, the days are coming when I will send punishment on the images of Babylon, and all her land will be shamed, and her dead will be falling down in her.
 
48.    ורננו  על־בבל  שמים 
וארץ  וכל  אשר  בהם
כי  מצפון  יבוא־לה
השודדים  נאם־יהוה׃
    Then the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for Babylon: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith the LORD.     Then the heavens and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for joy over Babylon; for the destroyers shall come to her from the north, says Yahweh.     And the heaven and the earth and everything in them, will make a song of joy over Babylon: for those who make her waste will come from the north, says the Lord.
 
49.    גם־בבל  לנפל  חללי 
ישראל  גם־לבבל
נפלו  חללי
כל־הארץ׃
    As Babylon hath caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the earth.     As Babylon has caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the land.     As Babylon had the dead of Israel put to the sword, so in Babylon the dead of all the land will be stretched out.
 
50.    פלטים  מחרב  הלכו 
אל־תעמדו  זכרו
מרחוק  את־יהוה
וירושלם  תעלה  על־
לבבכם׃
    Ye that have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still: remember the LORD afar off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.     You who have escaped the sword, go, don't stand still; remember Yahweh from afar, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.     You who have got away safe from the sword, go, waiting for nothing; have the Lord in memory when you are far away, and keep Jerusalem in mind.
 
51.    בשנו  כי־שמענו 
חרפה  כסתה  כלמה
פנינו  כי  באו  זרים
על־מקדשי  בית
יהוה׃
    We are confounded, because we have heard reproach: shame hath covered our faces: for strangers are come into the sanctuaries of the LORD's house.     We are confounded, because we have heard reproach; confusion has covered our faces: for strangers are come into the sanctuaries of Yahweh's house.     We are shamed because bitter words have come to our ears; our faces are covered with shame: for men from strange lands have come into the holy places of the Lord's house.
 
52.    לכן  הנה־ימים  באים 
נאם־יהוה  ופקדתי
על־פסיליה
ובכל־ארצה  יאנק
חלל׃
    Wherefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will do judgment upon her graven images: and through all her land the wounded shall groan.     Therefore, behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will execute judgment on her engraved images; and through all her land the wounded shall groan.     For this reason, see, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will send punishment on her images; and through all her land the wounded will be crying out in pain.
 
53.    כי־תעלה  בבל  השמים 
וכי  תבצר  מרום  עזה
מאתי  יבאו  שדדים
לה  נאם־  יהוה׃
    Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet from me shall spoilers come unto her, saith the LORD.     Though Babylon should mount up to the sky, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet from me shall destroyers come to her, says Yahweh.     Even if Babylon was lifted up to heaven, even if she had the high places of her strength shut in with walls, still I would send against her those who will make her waste, says the Lord.
 
54.    קול  זעקה  מבבל 
ושבר  גדול  מארץ
כשדים׃
    A sound of a cry cometh from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans:     The sound of a cry from Babylon, and of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!     There is the sound of a cry from Babylon, and of a great destruction from the land of the Chaldaeans:
 
55.    כי־שדד  יהוה 
את־בבל  ואבד  ממנה
קול  גדול  והמו
גליהם  כמים  רבים
נתן  שאון  קולם׃
    Because the LORD hath spoiled Babylon, and destroyed out of her the great voice; when her waves do roar like great waters, a noise of their voice is uttered:     For Yahweh lays Babylon waste, and destroys out of her the great voice; and their waves roar like many waters; the noise of their voice is uttered:     For the Lord is making Babylon waste, and putting an end to the great voice coming out of her; and her waves are thundering like great waters, their voice is sounding loud:
 
56.    כי  בא  עליה  על־בבל 
שודד  ונלכדו
גבוריה  חתתה
קשתותם  כי  אל
גמלות  יהוה  שלם
ישלם׃
    Because the spoiler is come upon her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite.     for the destroyer is come on her, even on Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, their bows are broken in pieces; for Yahweh is a God of recompenses, he will surely requite.     For the waster has come on her, even on Babylon, and her men of war are taken, their bows are broken: for the Lord is a rewarding God, and he will certainly give payment.
 
57.    והשכרתי  שריה 
וחכמיה  פחותיה
וסגניה  וגבוריה
וישנו  שנת־עולם
ולא  יקיצו
נאם־המלך  יהוה
צבאות  שמו׃
    And I will make drunk her princes, and her wise men, her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men: and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.     I will make drunk her princes and her wise men, her governors and her deputies, and her mighty men; and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake up, says the King, whose name is Yahweh of Armies.     And I will make her chiefs and her wise men, her rulers and her captains and her men of war, overcome with wine; their sleep will be an eternal sleep without awaking, says the King; the Lord of armies is his name.
 
58.    כה־אמר  יהוה  צבאות 
חמות  בבל  הרחבה
ערער  תתערער
ושעריה  הגבהים  באש
יצתו  ויגעו  עמים
בדי־ריק  ולאמים
בדי־אש  ויעפו׃
    Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly broken, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the people shall labour in vain, and the folk in the fire, and they shall be weary.     Thus says Yahweh of Armies: The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly overthrown, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the peoples shall labor for vanity, and the nations for the fire; and they shall be weary.     The Lord of armies has said: The wide walls of Babylon will be completely uncovered and her high doorways will be burned with fire; so peoples keep on working for nothing, and the weariness of nations comes to an end in the smoke.
 
59.    הדבר  אשר־צוה 
ירמיהו  הנביא
את־שריה  בן־נריה
בן־מחסיה  בלכתו
את־  צדקיהו
מלך־יהודה  בבל
בשנת  הרבעית  למלכו
ושריה  שר  מנוחה׃
    The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. And this Seraiah was a quiet prince.     The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. Now Seraiah was chief quartermaster.     The order which Jeremiah the prophet gave to Seraiah, the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he went with Zedekiah, the king of Judah, to Babylon in the fourth year of his rule. Now Seraiah was the chief controller of the house.
 
60.    ויכתב  ירמיהו  את 
כל־הרעה  אשר־תבוא
אל־בבל  אל־ספר  אחד
את  כל־  הדברים
האלה  הכתבים
אל־בבל׃
    So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.     Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come on Babylon, even all these words that are written concerning Babylon.     And Jeremiah put in a book all the evil which was to come on Babylon.
 
61.    ויאמר  ירמיהו 
אל־שריה  כבאך  בבל
וראית  וקראת  את
כל־הדברים  האלה׃
    And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words;     Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When you come to Babylon, then see that you read all these words,     And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When you come to Babylon, see that you give them all these words;
 
62.    ואמרת  יהוה  אתה 
דברת  אל־המקום  הזה
להכריתו  לבלתי
היות־בו  יושב
למאדם  ועד־בהמה
כי־שממות  עולם
תהיה׃
    Then shalt thou say, O LORD, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it shall be desolate for ever.     and say, Yahweh, you have spoken concerning this place, to cut it off, that none shall dwell therein, neither man nor animal, but that it shall be desolate forever.     And after reading them, say, O Lord, you have said about this place that it is to be cut off, so that no one will be living in it, not a man or a beast, but it will be unpeopled for ever.
 
63.    והיה  ככלתך  לקרא 
את־הספר  הזה  תקשר
עליו  אבן  והשלכתו
אל־תוך  פרת׃
    And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates:     It shall be, when you have made an end of reading this book, that you shall bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of the Euphrates:     And it will be that, when you have come to an end of reading this book, you are to have a stone fixed to it, and have it dropped into the Euphrates:
 
64.    ואמרת  ככה  תשקע 
בבל  ולא־תקום  מפני
הרעה  אשר  אנכי
מביא  עליה  ויעפו
עד־הנה  דברי
ירמיהו׃
    And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.     and you shall say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise again because of the evil that I will bring on her; and they shall be weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.     And you are to say, So Babylon will go down, never to be lifted up again, because of the evil which I will send on her: and weariness will overcome them. So far, these are the words of Jeremiah.
