כי־יכרית יהוה אלהיך את־הגוים אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך את־ארצם וירשתם וישבת בעריהם ובבתיהם׃ |
When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses; | When Yahweh your God shall cut off the nations, whose land Yahweh your God gives you, and you succeed them, and dwell in their cities, and in their houses; | When the nations, whose land the Lord your God is giving you, have been cut off by him, and you have taken their place and are living in their towns and in their houses; | |||

שלוש ערים תבדיל לך בתוך ארצך אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך לרשתה׃ |
Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it. | you shall set apart three cities for you in the midst of your land, which Yahweh your God gives you to possess it. | You are to have three towns marked out in the land which the Lord your God is giving you for your heritage. | |||

תכין לך הדרך ושלשת את־גבול ארצך אשר ינחילך יהוה אלהיך והיה לנוס שמה כל־רצח׃ |
Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither. | You shall prepare you the way, and divide the borders of your land, which Yahweh your God causes you to inherit, into three parts, that every manslayer may flee there. | You are to make ready a way, and see that the land which the Lord your God is giving you for your heritage, is marked out into three parts, to which any taker of life may go in flight. | |||

וזה דבר הרצח אשר־ינוס שמה וחי אשר יכה את־רעהו בבלי־דעת והוא לא־שנא לו מתמל שלשם׃ |
And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past; | This is the case of the manslayer, that shall flee there and live: whoever kills his neighbor unawares, and didn't hate him in time past; | This is to be the rule for anyone who goes in flight there, after causing the death of his neighbour in error and not through hate; | |||

ואשר יבא את־רעהו ביער לחטב עצים ונדחה ידו בגרזן לכרת העץ ונשל הברזל מן־העץ ומצא את־רעהו ומת הוא ינוס אל־אחת הערים־האלה וחי׃ |
As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live: | as when a man goes into the forest with his neighbor to chop wood, and his hand fetches a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slips from the handle, and lights on his neighbor, so that he dies; he shall flee to one of these cities and live: | For example, if a man goes into the woods with his neighbour for the purpose of cutting down trees, and when he takes his axe to give a blow to the tree, the head of the axe comes off, and falling on to his neighbour gives him a wound causing his death; then the man may go in flight to one of these towns and be safe: | |||

פן־ירדף גאל הדם אחרי הרצח כי־יחם לבבו והשיגו כי־ירבה הדרך והכהו נפש ולו אין משפט־מות כי לא שנא הוא לו מתמול שלשום׃ |

על־כן אנכי מצוך לאמר שלש ערים תבדיל לך׃ |
Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee. | Therefore I command you, saying, You shall set apart three cities for yourselves. | And so I am ordering you to see that three towns are marked out for this purpose. | |||

ואם־ירחיב יהוה אלהיך את־גבלך כאשר נשבע לאבתיך ונתן לך את־כל־ הארץ אשר דבר לתת לאבתיך׃ |
And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers; | If Yahweh your God enlarges your border, as he has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land which he promised to give to your fathers; | And if the Lord your God makes wide the limits of your land, as he said in his oath to your fathers, and gives you all the land which he undertook to give to your fathers; | |||

כי־תשמר את־כל־המצוה הזאת לעשתה אשר אנכי מצוך היום לאהבה את־ יהוה אלהיך וללכת בדרכיו כל־הימים ויספת לך עוד שלש ערים על השלש האלה׃ |
If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three: | if you keep all this commandment to do it, which I command you this day, to love Yahweh your God, and to walk ever in his ways; then you shall add three cities more for yourselves, besides these three: | If you keep and do all these orders which I give you today, loving the Lord your God and walking ever in his ways; then let three more towns, in addition to these three, be marked out for you: | |||

ולא ישפך דם נקי בקרב ארצך אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך נחלה והיה עליך דמים׃ |
That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee. | that innocent blood not be shed in the midst of your land, which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, and so blood be on you. | So that in all your land, which the Lord your God is giving you for your heritage, no man may be wrongly put to death, for which you will be responsible. | |||

וכי־יהיה איש שנא לרעהו וארב לו וקם עליו והכהו נפש ומת ונס אל־ אחת הערים האל׃ |
But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities: | But if any man hates his neighbor, and lies in wait for him, and rises up against him, and strikes him mortally so that he dies, and he flees into one of these cities; | But if any man has hate for his neighbour, and waiting for him secretly makes an attack on him and gives him a blow causing his death, and then goes in flight to one of these towns; | |||

ושלחו זקני עירו ולקחו אתו משם ונתנו אתו ביד גאל הדם ומת׃ |
Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. | then the elders of his city shall send and bring him there, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. | The responsible men of his town are to send and take him, and give him up to the one who has the right of punishment to be put to death. | |||

לא־תחוס עינך עליו ובערת דם־הנקי מישראל וטוב לך׃ |
Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee. | Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall put away the innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with you. | Have no pity on him, so that Israel may be clear from the crime of putting a man to death without cause, and it will be well for you. | |||

לא תסיג גבול רעך אשר גבלו ראשנים בנחלתך אשר תנחל בארץ אשר יהוה אלהיך נתן לך לרשתה׃ |
Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it. | You shall not remove your neighbor's landmark, which they of old time have set, in your inheritance which you shall inherit, in the land that Yahweh your God gives you to possess it. | Your neighbour's landmark, which was put in its place by the men of old times, is not to be moved or taken away in the land of your heritage which the Lord your God is giving you. | |||

לא־יקום עד אחד באיש לכל־עון ולכל־חטאת בכל־חטא אשר יחטא על־פי שני עדים או על־פי שלשה־עדים יקום דבר׃ |

כי־יקום עד־חמס באיש לענות בו סרה׃ |

ועמדו שני־האנשים אשר־להם הריב לפני יהוה לפני הכהנים והשפטים אשר יהיו בימים ההם׃ |
Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days; | then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before Yahweh, before the priests and the judges who shall be in those days; | Then the two men, between whom the argument has taken place, are to come before the Lord, before the priests and judges who are then in power; | |||

ודרשו השפטים היטב והנה עד־שקר העד שקר ענה באחיו׃ |
And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother; | and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness is a false witness, and has testified falsely against his brother; | And the judges will have the question looked into with care: and if the witness is seen to be false and to have made a false statement against his brother, | |||

ועשיתם לו כאשר זמם לעשות לאחיו ובערת הרע מקרבך׃ |
Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you. | then you shall do to him as he had thought to do to his brother: so you shall put away the evil from the midst of you. | Then do to him what it was his purpose to do to his brother: and so put away the evil from among you. | |||

והנשארים ישמעו ויראו ולא־יספו לעשות עוד כדבר הרע הזה בקרבך׃ |
And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you. | Those who remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil in the midst of you. | And the rest of the people, hearing of it, will be full of fear, and never again do such evil among you. | |||

ולא תחוס עינך נפש בנפש עין בעין שן בשן יד ביד רגל ברגל׃ |
And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. | Your eyes shall not pity; life [shall go] for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. | Have no pity; let life be given for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. | |||
