1.    Then Job answered,     Then Job answered and said,     ויען  איוב  ויאמר׃      VY'yN 'aYVB VY'aMUr.     And Job answereth and saith: --     respondens autem Iob dixit
 
2.    "I have heard many such things. You are all miserable comforters!     I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are ye all.     שמעתי  כאלה  רבות 
מנחמי  עמל  כלכם׃
    ShM'yThY K'aLH UrBVTh MNChMY 'yML KLKM.     I have heard many such things, Miserable comforters are ye all.     audivi frequenter talia consolatores onerosi omnes vos estis
 
3.    Shall vain words have an end? Or what provokes you that you answer?     Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldeneth thee that thou answerest?     הקץ  לדברי־רוח  או 
מה־ימריצך  כי
תענה׃
    HQTSh LDBUrY-UrVCh 'aV MH-YMUrYTShK KY Th'yNH.     Is there an end to words of wind? Or what doth embolden thee that thou answerest?     numquid habebunt finem verba ventosa aut aliquid tibi molestum est si loquaris
 
4.    I also could speak as you do. If your soul were in my soul's place, I could join words together against you, and shake my head at you,     I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul's stead, I could heap up words against you, and shake mine head at you.     גם  אנכי  ככם  אדברה 
לו־יש  נפשכם  תחת
נפשי  אחבירה  עליכם
במלים  ואניעה
עליכם  במו  ראשי׃
    GM 'aNKY KKM 'aDBUrH LV-YSh NPhShKM ThChTh NPhShY 'aChBYUrH 'yLYKM BMLYM V'aNY'yH 'yLYKM BMV Ur'aShY.     I also, like you, might speak, If your soul were in my soul`s stead. I might join against you with words, And nod at you with my head.     poteram et ego similia vestri loqui atque utinam esset anima vestra pro anima mea
 
5.    but I would strengthen you with my mouth. The solace of my lips would relieve you.     But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips should asswage your grief.     אאמצכם  במו־פי 
וניד  שפתי  יחשך׃
    'a'aMTShKM BMV-PhY VNYD ShPhThY YChShK.     I might harden you with my mouth, And the moving of my lips might be sparing.     consolarer et ego vos sermonibus et moverem caput meum super vos
 
6.    "Though I speak, my grief is not subsided. Though I forbear, what am I eased?     Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and though I forbear, what am I eased?     אם־אדברה  לא־יחשך 
כאבי  ואחדלה
מה־מני  יהלך׃
    'aM-'aDBUrH L'a-YChShK K'aBY V'aChDLH MH-MNY YHLK.     If I speak, my pain is not restrained, And I cease -- what goeth from me?     roborarem vos ore meo et moverem labia quasi parcens vobis
 
7.    But now, God, you have surely worn me out. You have made desolate all my company.     But now he hath made me weary: thou hast made desolate all my company.     אך־עתה  הלאני 
השמות  כל־עדתי׃
    'aK-'yThH HL'aNY HShMVTh KL-'yDThY.     Only, now, it hath wearied me; Thou hast desolated all my company,     sed quid agam si locutus fuero non quiescet dolor meus et si tacuero non recedet a me
 
8.    You have shriveled me up. This is a witness against me. My leanness rises up against me. It testifies to my face.     And thou hast filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me beareth witness to my face.     ותקמטני  לעד  היה 
ויקם  בי  כחשי  בפני
יענה׃
    VThQMTNY L'yD HYH VYQM BY KChShY BPhNY Y'yNH.     And Thou dost loathe me, For a witness it hath been, And rise up against me doth my failure, In my face it testifieth.     nunc autem oppressit me dolor meus et in nihili redacti sunt omnes artus mei
 
9.    He has torn me in his wrath, and persecuted me. He has gnashed on me with his teeth. My adversary sharpens his eyes on me.     He teareth me in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me.     אפו  טרף  וישטמני 
חרק  עלי  בשניו  צרי
ילטוש  עיניו  לי׃
    'aPhV TUrPh VYShTMNY ChUrQ 'yLY BShNYV TShUrY YLTVSh 'yYNYV LY.     His anger hath torn, and he hateth me, He hath gnashed at me with his teeth, My adversary sharpeneth his eyes for me.     rugae meae testimonium dicunt contra me et suscitatur falsiloquus adversus faciem meam contradicens mihi
 
10.    They have gaped on me with their mouth. They have struck me on the cheek reproachfully. They gather themselves together against me.     They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me.     פערו  עלי  בפיהם 
בחרפה  הכו  לחיי
יחד  עלי  יתמלאון׃
    Ph'yUrV 'yLY BPhYHM BChUrPhH HKV LChYY YChD 'yLY YThML'aVN.     They have gaped on me with their mouth, In reproach they have smitten my cheeks, Together against me they set themselves.     collegit furorem suum in me et comminans mihi infremuit contra me dentibus suis hostis meus terribilibus oculis me intuitus est
 
11.    God delivers me to the ungodly, and casts me into the hands of the wicked.     God hath delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked.     יסגירני  אל  אל 
עויל  ועל־ידי
רשעים  ירטני׃
    YSGYUrNY 'aL 'aL 'yVYL V'yL-YDY UrSh'yYM YUrTNY.     God shutteth me up unto the perverse, And to the hands of the wicked turneth me over.     aperuerunt super me ora sua exprobrantes percusserunt maxillam meam satiati sunt poenis meis
 
12.    I was at ease, and he broke me apart. Yes, he has taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces. He has also set me up for his target.     I was at ease, but he hath broken me asunder: he hath also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark.     שלו  הייתי 
ויפרפרני  ואחז
בערפי  ויפצפצני
ויקימני  לו  למטרה׃
    ShLV HYYThY VYPhUrPhUrNY V'aChZ B'yUrPhY VYPhTShPhTShNY VYQYMNY LV LMTUrH.     At ease I have been, and he breaketh me, And he hath laid hold on my neck, And he breaketh me in pieces, And he raiseth me to him for a mark.     conclusit me Deus apud iniquum et manibus impiorum me tradidit
 
13.    His archers surround me. He splits my kidneys apart, and does not spare. He pours out my gall on the ground.     His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground.     יסבו  עלי  רביו 
יפלח  כליותי  ולא
יחמול  ישפך  לארץ
מררתי׃
    YSBV 'yLY UrBYV YPhLCh KLYVThY VL'a YChMVL YShPhK L'aUrTSh MUrUrThY.     Go round against me do his archers. He splitteth my reins, and spareth not, He poureth out to the earth my gall.     ego ille quondam opulentus repente contritus sum tenuit cervicem meam confregit me et posuit sibi quasi in signum
 
14.    He breaks me with breach on breach. He runs on me like a giant.     He breaketh me with breach upon breach, he runneth upon me like a giant.     יפרצני  פרץ 
על־פני־פרץ  ירץ
עלי  כגבור׃
    YPhUrTShNY PhUrTSh 'yL-PhNY-PhUrTSh YUrTSh 'yLY KGBVUr.     He breaketh me -- breach upon breach, He runneth upon me as a mighty one.     circumdedit me lanceis suis convulneravit lumbos meos non pepercit et effudit in terra viscera mea
 
15.    I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and have thrust my horn in the dust.     I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and defiled my horn in the dust.     שק  תפרתי  עלי  גלדי 
ועללתי  בעפר  קרני׃
    ShQ ThPhUrThY 'yLY GLDY V'yLLThY B'yPhUr QUrNY.     Sackcloth I have sewed on my skin, And have rolled in the dust my horn.     concidit me vulnere super vulnus inruit in me quasi gigans
 
16.    My face is red with weeping. Deep darkness is on my eyelids.     My face is foul with weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death;     פני  חמרמרה 
מני־בכי  ועל  עפעפי
צלמות׃
    PhNY ChMUrMUrH MNY-BKY V'yL 'yPh'yPhY TShLMVTh.     My face is foul with weeping, And on mine eyelids is death-shade.     saccum consui super cutem meam et operui cinere cornu meum
 
17.    Although there is no violence in my hands, and my prayer is pure.     Not for any injustice in mine hands: also my prayer is pure.     על  לא־חמס  בכפי 
ותפלתי  זכה׃
    'yL L'a-ChMS BKPhY VThPhLThY ZKH.     Not for violence in my hands, And my prayer is pure.     facies mea intumuit a fletu et palpebrae meae caligaverunt
 
18.    "Earth, don't cover my blood. Let my cry have no place to rest.     O earth, cover not thou my blood, and let my cry have no place.     ארץ  אל־תכסי  דמי 
ואל־יהי  מקום
לזעקתי׃
    'aUrTSh 'aL-ThKSY DMY V'aL-YHY MQVM LZ'yQThY.     O earth, do not thou cover my blood! And let there not be a place for my cry.     haec passus sum absque iniquitate manus meae cum haberem mundas ad Deum preces
 
19.    Even now, behold, my witness is in heaven. He who vouches for me is on high.     Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high.     גם־עתה  הנה־בשמים 
עדי  ושהדי
במרומים׃
    GM-'yThH HNH-BShMYM 'yDY VShHDY BMUrVMYM.     Also, now, lo, in the heavens is my witness, And my testifier in the high places.     terra ne operias sanguinem meum neque inveniat locum in te latendi clamor meus
 
20.    My friends scoff at me. My eyes pour out tears to God,     My friends scorn me: but mine eye poureth out tears unto God.     מליצי  רעי  אל־אלוה 
דלפה  עיני׃
    MLYTShY Ur'yY 'aL-'aLVH DLPhH 'yYNY.     My interpreter is my friend, Unto God hath mine eye dropped:     ecce enim in caelo testis meus et conscius meus in excelsis
 
21.    that he would maintain the right of a man with God, of a son of man with his neighbor!     O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour!     ויוכח  לגבר 
עם־אלוה  ובן־אדם
לרעהו׃
    VYVKCh LGBUr 'yM-'aLVH VBN-'aDM LUr'yHV.     And he reasoneth for a man with God, And a son of man for his friend.     verbosi mei amici mei ad Deum stillat oculus meus
 
22.    For when a few years are come, I shall go the way from whence I shall not return.     When a few years are come, then I shall go the way whence I shall not return.     כי־שנות  מספר 
יאתיו  וארח
לא־אשוב  אהלך׃
    KY-ShNVTh MSPhUr Y'aThYV V'aUrCh L'a-'aShVB 'aHLK.     When a few years do come, Then a path I return not do I go.     atque utinam sic iudicaretur vir cum Deo quomodo iudicatur filius hominis cum collega suo. ecce enim breves anni transeunt et semitam per quam non revertar ambulo
