2.    "Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher; "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity."     Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.     הבל  הבלים  אמר 
קהלת  הבל  הבלים
הכל  הבל׃
    HBL HBLYM 'aMUr QHLTh HBL HBLYM HKL HBL.     Vanity of vanities, said the Preacher, Vanity of vanities: the whole is vanity.     vanitas vanitatum dixit Ecclesiastes vanitas vanitatum omnia vanitas
 
3.    What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?     What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?     מה־יתרון  לאדם 
בכל־עמלו  שיעמל
תחת  השמש׃
    MH-YThUrVN L'aDM BKL-'yMLV ShY'yML ThChTh HShMSh.     What advantage is to man by all his labour that he laboureth at under the sun?     quid habet amplius homo de universo labore suo quod laborat sub sole
 
4.    One generation goes, and another generation comes; but the earth remains forever.     One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.     דור  הלך  ודור  בא 
והארץ  לעולם  עמדת׃
    DVUr HLK VDVUr B'a VH'aUrTSh L'yVLM 'yMDTh.     A generation is going, and a generation is coming, and the earth to the age is standing.     generatio praeterit et generatio advenit terra vero in aeternum stat
 
5.    The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hurries to its place where it rises.     The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.     וזרח  השמש  ובא 
השמש  ואל־מקומו
שואף  זורח  הוא  שם׃
    VZUrCh HShMSh VB'a HShMSh V'aL-MQVMV ShV'aPh ZVUrCh HV'a ShM.     Also, the sun hath risen, and the sun hath gone in, and unto its place panting it is rising there.     oritur sol et occidit et ad locum suum revertitur ibique renascens
 
6.    The wind goes toward the south, and turns around to the north. It turns around continually as it goes, and the wind returns again to its courses.     The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.     הולך  אל־דרום 
וסובב  אל־צפון
סובב  סבב  הולך
הרוח  ועל־סביבתיו
שב  הרוח׃
    HVLK 'aL-DUrVM VSVBB 'aL-TShPhVN SVBB SBB HVLK HUrVCh V'yL-SBYBThYV ShB HUrVCh.     Going unto the south, and turning round unto the north, turning round, turning round, the wind is going, and by its circuits the wind hath returned.     gyrat per meridiem et flectitur ad aquilonem lustrans universa circuitu pergit spiritus et in circulos suos regreditur
 
7.    All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. To the place where the rivers flow, there they flow again.     All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.     כל־הנחלים  הלכים 
אל־הים  והים  איננו
מלא  אל־מקום
שהנחלים  הלכים  שם
הם  שבים  ללכת׃
    KL-HNChLYM HLKYM 'aL-HYM VHYM 'aYNNV ML'a 'aL-MQVM ShHNChLYM HLKYM ShM HM ShBYM LLKTh.     All the streams are going unto the sea, and the sea is not full; unto a place whither the streams are going, thither they are turning back to go.     omnia flumina intrant mare et mare non redundat ad locum unde exeunt flumina revertuntur ut iterum fluant
 
8.    All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.     All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.     כל־הדברים  יגעים 
לא־יוכל  איש  לדבר
לא־תשבע  עין  לראות
ולא־תמלא  אזן
משמע׃
    KL-HDBUrYM YG'yYM L'a-YVKL 'aYSh LDBUr L'a-ThShB'y 'yYN LUr'aVTh VL'a-ThML'a 'aZN MShM'y.     All these things are wearying; a man is not able to speak, the eye is not satisfied by seeing, nor filled is the ear from hearing.     cunctae res difficiles non potest eas homo explicare sermone non saturatur oculus visu nec auris impletur auditu
 
9.    That which has been is that which shall be; and that which has been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.     The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.     מה־שהיה  הוא  שיהיה 
ומה־שנעשה  הוא
שיעשה  ואין  כל־חדש
תחת  השמש׃
    MH-ShHYH HV'a ShYHYH VMH-ShN'yShH HV'a ShY'yShH V'aYN KL-ChDSh ThChTh HShMSh.     What is that which hath been? it is that which is, and what is that which hath been done? it is that which is done, and there is not an entirely new thing under the sun.     quid est quod fuit ipsum quod futurum est quid est quod factum est ipsum quod fiendum est
 
10.    Is there a thing of which it may be said, "Behold, this is new?" It has been long ago, in the ages which were before us.     Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.     יש  דבר  שיאמר 
ראה־זה  חדש  הוא
כבר  היה  לעלמים
אשר  היה  מלפננו׃
    YSh DBUr ShY'aMUr Ur'aH-ZH ChDSh HV'a KBUr HYH L'yLMYM 'aShUr HYH MLPhNNV.     There is a thing of which one saith: `See this, it is new!` already it hath been in the ages that were before us!     nihil sub sole novum nec valet quisquam dicere ecce hoc recens est iam enim praecessit in saeculis quae fuerunt ante nos
 
11.    There is no memory of the former; neither shall there be any memory of the latter that are to come, among those that shall come after.     There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.     אין  זכרון  לראשנים 
וגם  לאחרנים  שיהיו
לא־יהיה  להם  זכרון
עם  שיהיו  לאחרנה׃
    'aYN ZKUrVN LUr'aShNYM VGM L'aChUrNYM ShYHYV L'a-YHYH LHM ZKUrVN 'yM ShYHYV L'aChUrNH.     There is not a remembrance of former generations; and also of the latter that are, there is no remembrance of them with those that are at the last.     non est priorum memoria sed nec eorum quidem quae postea futura sunt erit recordatio apud eos qui futuri sunt in novissimo
 
12.    I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.     I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.     אני  קהלת  הייתי

13.    I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God{The Hebrew word rendered "God" is "Elohim."} has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.     And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.     ונתתי  את־לבי 
לדרוש  ולתור  בחכמה
על  כל־אשר  נעשה
תחת  השמים  הוא
ענין  רע  נתן  אלהים
לבני  האדם  לענות
בו׃
    VNThThY 'aTh-LBY LDUrVSh VLThVUr BChKMH 'yL KL-'aShUr N'yShH ThChTh HShMYM HV'a 'yNYN Ur'y NThN 'aLHYM LBNY H'aDM L'yNVTh BV.     And I have given my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that hath been done under the heavens. It is a sad travail God hath given to the sons of man to be humbled by it.     et proposui in animo meo quaerere et investigare sapienter de omnibus quae fiunt sub sole hanc occupationem pessimam dedit Deus filiis hominum ut occuparentur in ea
 
14.    I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and a chasing after wind.     I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.     ראיתי 
את־כל־המעשים
שנעשו  תחת  השמש
והנה  הכל  הבל
ורעות  רוח׃
    Ur'aYThY 'aTh-KL-HM'yShYM ShN'yShV ThChTh HShMSh VHNH HKL HBL VUr'yVTh UrVCh.     I have seen all the works that have been done under the sun, and lo, the whole is vanity and vexation of spirit!     vidi quae fiunt cuncta sub sole et ecce universa vanitas et adflictio spiritus
 
15.    That which is crooked can't be made straight; and that which is lacking can't be counted.     That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.     מעות  לא־יוכל  לתקן 
וחסרון  לא־יוכל
להמנות׃
    M'yVTh L'a-YVKL LThQN VChSUrVN L'a-YVKL LHMNVTh.     A crooked thing one is not able to make straight, and a lacking thing is not able to be numbered.     perversi difficile corriguntur et stultorum infinitus est numerus
 
16.    I said to myself, "Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge."     I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.     דברתי  אני  עם־לבי 
לאמר  אני  הנה
הגדלתי  והוספתי
חכמה  על  כל־אשר־
היה  לפני
על־ירושלם  ולבי
ראה  הרבה  חכמה
ודעת׃
    DBUrThY 'aNY 'yM-LBY L'aMUr 'aNY HNH HGDLThY VHVSPhThY ChKMH 'yL KL-'aShUr- HYH LPhNY 'yL-YUrVShLM VLBY Ur'aH HUrBH ChKMH VD'yTh.     I -- I spake with my heart, saying, `I, lo, I have magnified and added wisdom above every one who hath been before me at Jerusalem, and my heart hath seen abundantly wisdom and knowledge.     locutus sum in corde meo dicens ecce magnus effectus sum et praecessi sapientia omnes qui fuerunt ante me in Hierusalem et mens mea contemplata est multa sapienter et didicit
 
17.    I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also was a chasing after wind.     And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.     ואתנה  לבי  לדעת 
חכמה  ודעת  הוללות
ושכלות  ידעתי
שגם־זה  הוא  רעיון
רוח׃
    V'aThNH LBY LD'yTh ChKMH VD'yTh HVLLVTh VShKLVTh YD'yThY ShGM-ZH HV'a Ur'yYVN UrVCh.     And I give my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I have known that even this is vexation of spirit;     dedique cor meum ut scirem prudentiam atque doctrinam erroresque et stultitiam et agnovi quod in his quoque esset labor et adflictio spiritus
 
18.    For in much wisdom is much grief; and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.     For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.     כי  ברב  חכמה 
רב־כעס  ויוסיף  דעת
יוסיף  מכאוב׃
    KY BUrB ChKMH UrB-K'yS VYVSYPh D'yTh YVSYPh MK'aVB.     for, in abundance of wisdom is abundance of sadness, and he who addeth knowledge addeth pain.`     eo quod in multa sapientia multa sit indignatio et qui addit scientiam addat et laborem
