1.    ταυτα ειπων ιησους εξηλθεν συν τοις μαθηταις αυτου περαν του χειμαρρου του κεδρων οπου ην κηπος εις ον εισηλθεν αυτος και οι μαθηται αυτου     When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples.     When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.     When Jesus had said these words he went out with his disciples over the stream Kedron to a garden, into which he went with his disciples.

2.    ηδει δε και ιουδας ο παραδιδους αυτον τον τοπον οτι πολλακις συνηχθη  ιησους εκει μετα των μαθητων αυτου     And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.     Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often met there with his disciples.     And Judas, who was false to him, had knowledge of the place because Jesus went there frequently with his disciples.

3.    ο ουν ιουδας λαβων την σπειραν και εκ των αρχιερεων και εκ των φαρισαιων υπηρετας ερχεται εκει μετα φανων και λαμπαδων και οπλων     Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.     Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.     So Judas, getting a band of armed men and police from the chief priests and Pharisees, went there with lights and with arms.

4.    ιησους ουν ειδως παντα τα ερχομενα επ αυτον εξηλθεν και λεγει  αυτοις τινα ζητειτε     Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?     Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went forth, and said to them, "Who are you looking for?"     Then Jesus, having knowledge of everything which was coming on him, went forward and said to them, Who are you looking for?

5.    απεκριθησαν αυτω ιησουν τον ναζωραιον λεγει αυτοις  εγω ειμι ειστηκει δε και ιουδας ο παραδιδους αυτον μετ αυτων     They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.     They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I am he." Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.     Their answer was, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said, I am he. And Judas, who was false to him, was there at their side.

6.    ως ουν ειπεν αυτοις εγω ειμι απηλθον εις τα οπισω και επεσαν χαμαι     As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.     When therefore he said to them, "I am he," they went backward, and fell to the ground.     And when he said to them, I am he, they went back, falling to the earth.

7.    παλιν ουν επηρωτησεν αυτουσ τινα ζητειτε οι δε ειπαν ιησουν τον ναζωραιον     Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.     Again therefore he asked them, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus of Nazareth."     So again he put the question to them, Who are you looking for? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene.

8.    απεκριθη ιησους ειπον υμιν οτι εγω ειμι ει ουν εμε ζητειτε αφετε τουτους υπαγειν     Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:     Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,"     Jesus made answer, I have said that I am he; if you are looking for me, let these men go away.

9.    ινα πληρωθη ο λογος ον ειπεν οτι ους δεδωκας μοι ουκ απωλεσα εξ αυτων ουδενα     That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.     that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, "Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none."{John 6:39}     (He said this so that his words might come true, I have kept safe all those whom you gave to me.)

10.    σιμων ουν πετρος εχων μαχαιραν ειλκυσεν αυτην και επαισεν τον του αρχιερεως δουλον και απεκοψεν αυτου το ωταριον το δεξιον ην δε ονομα τω δουλω μαλχος     Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.     Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.     Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, took it out and gave the high priest's servant a blow, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

11.    ειπεν ουν ο ιησους τω πετρω βαλε την μαχαιραν εις την θηκην το ποτηριον ο δεδωκεν μοι ο πατηρ ου μη πιω αυτο     Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?     Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?"     Then Jesus said to Peter, Put back your sword: am I not to take the cup which my Father has given to me?

12.    η ουν σπειρα και ο χιλιαρχος και οι υπηρεται των ιουδαιων συνελαβον τον ιησουν και εδησαν αυτον     Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,     So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,     Then the band and the chief captain and the police took Jesus and put cords round him.

13.    και ηγαγον  προς ανναν πρωτον ην γαρ πενθερος του καιαφα ος ην αρχιερευς του ενιαυτου εκεινου     And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.     and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.     They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was the high priest that year.

14.    ην δε καιαφας ο συμβουλευσας τοις ιουδαιοις οτι συμφερει ενα ανθρωπον αποθανειν υπερ του λαου     Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.     Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.     It was Caiaphas who had said to the Jews that it was in their interest for one man to be put to death for the people.

15.    ηκολουθει δε τω ιησου σιμων πετρος και αλλος μαθητης ο δε μαθητης εκεινος ην γνωστος τω αρχιερει και συνεισηλθεν τω ιησου εις την αυλην του αρχιερεως     And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest.     Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;     And Simon Peter went after Jesus with another disciple. Now that disciple was a friend of the high priest and he went in with Jesus into the house of the high priest;

16.    ο δε πετρος ειστηκει προς τη θυρα εξω εξηλθεν ουν ο μαθητης ο αλλος ο  γνωστος του αρχιερεωσ και ειπεν τη θυρωρω και εισηγαγεν τον πετρον     But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.     but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter.     But Peter was kept outside at the door. Then this other disciple, who was a friend of the high priest, came out and had a word with the girl who kept the door, and took Peter in.

17.    λεγει ουν τω πετρω η παιδισκη η θυρωρος  μη και συ εκ των μαθητων ει του ανθρωπου τουτου λεγει εκεινος ουκ ειμι     Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.     Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" He said, "I am not."     Then the girl who was the door-keeper said to Peter, Are you not one of this man's disciples? In answer he said, I am not.

18.    ειστηκεισαν δε οι δουλοι και οι υπηρεται ανθρακιαν πεποιηκοτες οτι ψυχος ην και εθερμαινοντο ην δε και  ο πετρος μετ αυτων εστως και θερμαινομενος     And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with them, and warmed himself.     Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.     Now the servants and the police had made a fire of coals because it was cold; they were warming themselves in front of it and Peter was there with them, warming himself.

19.    ο ουν αρχιερευς ηρωτησεν τον ιησουν περι των μαθητων αυτου και περι της διδαχης αυτου     The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine.     The high priest therefore asked Jesus about his disciples, and about his teaching.     Then the high priest put questions to Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20.    απεκριθη αυτω ιησους εγω παρρησια λελαληκα τω κοσμω εγω παντοτε εδιδαξα εν συναγωγη και εν τω ιερω οπου παντεσ οι ιουδαιοι συνερχονται και εν κρυπτω ελαλησα ουδεν     Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing.     Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.     Jesus made answer, I said things openly to the world at all times; I have given my teaching in the Synagogues and in the Temple to which all the Jews come; and I have said nothing secretly.

21.    τι με ερωτασ ερωτησον τους ακηκοοτας τι ελαλησα αυτοις ιδε ουτοι οιδασιν α ειπον εγω     Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said.     Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, these know the things which I said."     Why are you questioning me? put questions to my hearers about what I have said to them: they have knowledge of what I said.

22.    ταυτα δε αυτου ειποντος εις παρεστηκωσ των υπηρετων εδωκεν ραπισμα τω ιησου ειπων ουτως αποκρινη τω αρχιερει     And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?     When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, "Do you answer the high priest like that?"     When he said this, one of the police by his side gave him a blow with his open hand, saying, Do you give such an answer to the high priest?

23.    απεκριθη αυτω ιησους ει κακως ελαλησα μαρτυρησον περι του κακου ει δε καλως τι με δερεις     Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?     Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?"     Jesus said in answer, If I have said anything evil, give witness to the evil: but if I said what is true, why do you give me blows?

24.    απεστειλεν ουν αυτον ο αννας δεδεμενον προς καιαφαν τον αρχιερεα     Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.     Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.     Then Annas sent him chained to Caiaphas, the high priest.

25.    ην δε σιμων πετρος εστως και θερμαινομενος ειπον ουν αυτω μη και συ εκ των μαθητων αυτου ει ηρνησατο εκεινος και ειπεν ουκ ειμι     And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I am not.     Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, "You aren't also one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."     But Simon Peter was still there warming himself by the fire. They said to him, Are you not one of his disciples? He said, No, I am not.

26.    λεγει εις εκ των δουλων του αρχιερεως συγγενης ων ου απεκοψεν πετρος το ωτιον ουκ εγω σε ειδον εν τω κηπω μετ αυτου     One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?     One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"     One of the servants of the high priest, a relation of him whose ear had been cut off by Peter, said, Did I not see you with him in the garden?

27.    παλιν ουν ηρνησατο πετρος και ευθεως αλεκτωρ εφωνησεν     Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.     Peter therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed.     Then again Peter said, No. And straight away a cock gave its cry.

28.    αγουσιν ουν τον ιησουν απο του καιαφα εις το πραιτωριον ην δε πρωι και αυτοι ουκ εισηλθον εις το πραιτωριον ινα μη μιανθωσιν αλλα  φαγωσιν το πασχα     Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.     They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn't enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.     So they took Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early. They themselves did not go into the Praetorium, so that they might not become unclean, but might take the Passover.

29.    εξηλθεν ουν ο πιλατος εξω προς αυτους και φησιν τινα κατηγοριαν φερετε [κατα] του ανθρωπου τουτου     Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man?     Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?"     So Pilate came out to them and put the question: What have you to say against this man?

30.    απεκριθησαν και ειπαν αυτω ει μη ην ουτος κακον ποιων ουκ αν σοι παρεδωκαμεν αυτον     They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.     They answered him, "If this man weren't an evildoer, we wouldn't have delivered him up to you."     They said to him in answer, If the man was not a wrongdoer we would not have given him up to you.

31.    ειπεν ουν αυτοις ο πιλατος λαβετε αυτον υμεις και κατα τον νομον υμων κρινατε αυτον ειπον αυτω οι ιουδαιοι ημιν ουκ εξεστιν αποκτειναι ουδενα     Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:     Pilate therefore said to them, "Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,"     Then Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and let him be judged by your law. But the Jews said to him, We have no right to put any man to death.

32.    ινα ο λογος του ιησου πληρωθη ον ειπεν σημαινων ποιω θανατω ημελλεν αποθνησκειν     That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying what death he should die.     that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.     (That the word of Jesus might come true, pointing to the sort of death he would have.)

33.    εισηλθεν ουν παλιν εις το πραιτωριον ο πιλατος και εφωνησεν τον ιησουν και ειπεν αυτω συ ει ο βασιλευς των ιουδαιων     Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?     Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"     Then Pilate went back into the Praetorium and sent for Jesus and said to him, Are you the King of the Jews?

34.    απεκριθη  ιησους απο σεαυτου συ τουτο λεγεις η αλλοι ειπον σοι περι εμου     Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?     Jesus answered him, "Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?"     Jesus made answer, Do you say this of yourself, or did others say it about me?

35.    απεκριθη ο πιλατος μητι εγω ιουδαιος ειμι το εθνος το σον και οι αρχιερεις παρεδωκαν σε εμοι τι εποιησας     Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?     Pilate answered, "I'm not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?"     Pilate said, Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests have given you into my hands: what have you done?

36.    απεκριθη ιησους η βασιλεια η εμη ουκ εστιν εκ του κοσμου τουτου ει εκ του κοσμου τουτου ην η βασιλεια η εμη οι υπηρεται οι εμοι ηγωνιζοντο [αν] ινα μη παραδοθω τοις ιουδαιοις νυν δε η βασιλεια η εμη ουκ εστιν εντευθεν     Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.     Jesus answered, "My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn't be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here."     Jesus said in answer, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom was of this world, my disciples would have made a good fight to keep me out of the hands of the Jews: but my kingdom is not here.

37.    ειπεν ουν αυτω ο πιλατος ουκουν βασιλευς ει συ απεκριθη ο ιησους συ λεγεις οτι βασιλευς ειμι εγω εις τουτο γεγεννημαι και εις τουτο εληλυθα εις τον κοσμον ινα μαρτυρησω τη αληθεια πας ο ων εκ της αληθειας ακουει μου της φωνης     Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.     Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."     Then Pilate said to him, Are you then a king? Jesus made answer, You say that I am a king. For this purpose was I given birth, and for this purpose I came into the world, that I might give witness to what is true. Every lover of what is true gives ear to my voice.

38.    λεγει αυτω ο πιλατος τι εστιν αληθεια και τουτο ειπων παλιν εξηλθεν προς τους ιουδαιους και λεγει αυτοις εγω ουδεμιαν ευρισκω εν αυτω αιτιαν     Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.     Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no basis for a charge against him.     Pilate said to him, True? what is true? Having said this he went out again to the Jews and said to them, I see no wrong in him.

39.    εστιν δε συνηθεια υμιν ινα ενα απολυσω υμιν εν τω πασχα βουλεσθε ουν απολυσω υμιν τον βασιλεα των ιουδαιων     But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?     But you have a custom, that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"     But every year you make a request to me to let a prisoner go free at the Passover. Is it your desire that I let the King of the Jews go free?

40.    εκραυγασαν ουν παλιν λεγοντες μη τουτον αλλα τον βαραββαν ην δε ο βαραββας ληστης     Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.     Then they all shouted again, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.     Then again they gave a loud cry, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was an outlaw.
