1.    דברי  אגור  בן־יקה 
המשא  נאם  הגבר
לאיתיאל  לאיתיאל
ואכל׃
    The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,     The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, the oracle: the man says to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal:     The words of Agur, the son of Jakeh, from Massa. The man says: I am full of weariness, O God, I am full of weariness; O God, I have come to an end:
 
2.    כי  בער  אנכי  מאיש 
ולא־בינת  אדם  לי׃
    Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.     "Surely I am the most ignorant man, and don't have a man's understanding.     For I am more like a beast than any man, I have no power of reasoning like a man:
 
3.    ולא־למדתי  חכמה 
ודעת  קדשים  אדע׃
    I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.     I have not learned wisdom, neither do I have the knowledge of the Holy One.     I have not got wisdom by teaching, so that I might have the knowledge of the Holy One.
 
4.    מי  עלה־שמים  וירד 
מי  אסף־רוח  בחפניו
מי  צרר־מים  בשמלה
מי  הקים
כל־אפסי־ארץ
מה־שמו  ומה־שם־בנו
כי  תדע׃
    Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?     Who has ascended up into heaven, and descended? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in his garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name, if you know?     Who has gone up to heaven and come down? who has taken the winds in his hands, prisoning the waters in his robe? by whom have all the ends of the earth been fixed? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if you are able to say?
 
5.    כל־אמרת  אלוה 
צרופה  מגן  הוא
לחסים  בו׃
    Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.     "Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.     Every word of God is tested: he is a breastplate to those who put their faith in him.
 
6.    אל־תוסף  על־דבריו 
פן־יוכיח  בך
ונכזבת׃
    Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.     Don't you add to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar.     Make no addition to his words, or he will make clear your error, and you will be seen to be false.
 
7.    שתים  שאלתי  מאתך 
אל־תמנע  ממני  בטרם
אמות׃
    Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:     "Two things I have asked of you; don't deny me before I die:     I have made request to you for two things; do not keep them from me before my death:
 
8.    שוא  ודבר־כזב  הרחק 
ממני  ראש  ועשר
אל־תתן־לי  הטריפני
לחם  חקי׃
    Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:     Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me;     Put far from me all false and foolish things: do not give me great wealth or let me be in need, but give me only enough food:
 
9.    פן  אשבע  וכחשתי 
ואמרתי  מי  יהוה
ופן־אורש  וגנבתי
ותפשתי  שם  אלהי׃
    Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.     lest I be full, deny you, and say, 'Who is Yahweh?' or lest I be poor, and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.     For fear that if I am full, I may be false to you and say, Who is the Lord? or if I am poor, I may become a thief, using the name of my God wrongly.
 
10.    אל־תלשן  עבד 
אל־אדנו  פן־יקללך
ואשמת׃
    Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse thee, and thou be found guilty.     "Don't slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you, and you be held guilty.     Do not say evil of a servant to his master, or he will put a curse on you, and you will get into trouble.
 
11.    דור  אביו  יקלל 
ואת־אמו  לא  יברך׃
    There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.     There is a generation that curses their father, and doesn't bless their mother.     There is a generation who put a curse on their father, and do not give a blessing to their mother.
 
12.    דור  טהור  בעיניו 
ומצאתו  לא  רחץ׃
    There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not washed from their filthiness.     There is a generation that is pure in their own eyes, yet are not washed from their filthiness.     There is a generation who seem to themselves to be free from sin, but are not washed from their unclean ways.
 
13.    דור  מה־רמו  עיניו 
ועפעפיו  ינשאו׃
    There is a generation, O how lofty are their eyes! and their eyelids are lifted up.     There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes! Their eyelids are lifted up.     There is a generation, O how full of pride are their eyes! O how their brows are lifted up!
 
14.    דור  חרבות  שניו 
ומאכלות  מתלעתיו
לאכל  עניים  מארץ
ואביונים  מאדם׃
    There is a generation, whose teeth are as swords, and their jaw teeth as knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, and the needy from among men.     There is a generation whose teeth are like swords, and their jaws like knives, to devour the poor from the earth, and the needy from among men.     There is a generation whose teeth are like swords, their strong teeth like knives, for the destruction of the poor from the earth, and of those who are in need from among men.
 
15.    לעלוקה  שתי  בנות 
הב  הב  שלוש  הנה  לא
תשבענה  ארבע
לא־אמרו  הון׃
    The horseleach hath two daughters, crying, Give, give. There are three things that are never satisfied, yea, four things say not, It is enough:     "The leach has two daughters: 'Give, give.'  "There are three things that are never satisfied; four that don't say, 'Enough:'     The night-spirit has two daughters, Give, give. There are three things which are never full, even four which never say, Enough:
 
16.    שאול  ועצר  רחם  ארץ 
לא־שבעה  מים  ואש
לא־אמרה  הון׃
    The grave; and the barren womb; the earth that is not filled with water; and the fire that saith not, It is enough.     Sheol{Sheol is the place of the dead.}, the barren womb; the earth that is not satisfied with water; and the fire that doesn't say, 'Enough.'     The underworld, and the woman without a child; the earth which never has enough water, and the fire which never says, Enough.
 
17.    עין  תלעג  לאב 
ותבוז  ליקהת־אם
יקרוה  ערבי־נחל
ויאכלוה  בני־נשר׃
    The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.     "The eye that mocks at his father, and scorns obedience to his mother: the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, the young eagles shall eat it.     The eye which makes sport of a father, and sees no value in a mother when she is old will be rooted out by the ravens of the valley, and be food for the young eagles.
 
18.    שלשה  המה  נפלאו 
ממני  וארבע  לא
ידעתים׃
    There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not:     "There are three things which are too amazing for me, four which I don't understand:     There are three things, the wonder of which overcomes me, even four things outside my knowledge:
 
19.    דרך  הנשר  בשמים 
דרך  נחש  עלי  צור
דרך־אניה  בלב־ים
ודרך  גבר  בעלמה׃
    The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.     The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent on a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maiden.     The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a snake on a rock; the way of a ship in the heart of the sea; and the way of a man with a girl.
 
20.    כן  דרך  אשה  מנאפת 
אכלה  ומחתה  פיה
ואמרה  לא־פעלתי
און׃
    Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.     "So is the way of an adulterous woman: she eats and wipes her mouth, and says, 'I have done nothing wrong.'     This is the way of a false wife; she takes food, and, cleaning her mouth, says, I have done no wrong.
 
21.    תחת  שלוש  רגזה  ארץ 
ותחת  ארבע  לא־תוכל
שאת׃
    For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:     "For three things the earth tremble, and under four, it can't bear up:     For three things the earth is moved, and there are four which it will not put up with:
 
22.    תחת־עבד  כי  ימלוך 
ונבל  כי  ישבע־לחם׃
    For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with meat;     For a servant when he is king; a fool when he is filled with food;     A servant when he becomes a king; a man without sense when his wealth is increased;
 
23.    תחת  שנואה  כי  תבעל 
ושפחה  כי־תירש
גברתה׃
    For an odious woman when she is married; and an handmaid that is heir to her mistress.     for an unloved woman when she is married; and a handmaid who is heir to her mistress.     A hated woman when she is married; and a servant-girl who takes the place of her master's wife.
 
24.    ארבעה  הם  קטני־ארץ 
והמה  חכמים
מחכמים׃
    There be four things which are little upon the earth, but they are exceeding wise:     "There are four things which are little on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise:     There are four things which are little on the earth, but they are very wise:
 
25.    הנמלים  עם  לא־עז 
ויכינו  בקיץ  לחמם׃
    The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their meat in the summer;     the ants are not a strong people, yet they provide their food in the summer.     The ants are a people not strong, but they put by a store of food in the summer;
 
26.    שפנים  עם  לא־עצום 
וישימו  בסלע  ביתם׃
    The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks;     The conies are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks.     The conies are only a feeble people, but they make their houses in the rocks;
 
27.    מלך  אין  לארבה 
ויצא  חצץ  כלו׃
    The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands;     The locusts have no king, yet they advance in ranks.     The locusts have no king, but they all go out in bands;
 
28.    שממית  בידים  תתפש 
והיא  בהיכלי  מלך׃
    The spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings' palaces.     You can catch a lizard with your hands, yet it is in kings' palaces.     You may take the lizard in your hands, but it is in kings' houses.
 
29.    שלשה  המה  מיטיבי 
צעד  וארבעה  מיטבי
לכת׃
    There be three things which go well, yea, four are comely in going:     "There are three things which are stately in their march, four which are stately in going:     There are three things whose steps are good to see, even four whose goings are fair:
 
30.    ליש  גבור  בבהמה 
ולא־ישוב  מפני־כל׃
    A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any;     The lion, which is mightiest among animals, and doesn't turn away for any;     The lion, which is strongest among beasts, not turning from his way for any;
 
31.    זרזיר  מתנים 
או־תיש  ומלך  אלקום
עמו׃
    A greyhound; an he goat also; and a king, against whom there is no rising up.     the greyhound, the male goat also; and the king against whom there is no rising up.     The war-horse, and the he-goat, and the king when his army is with him.
 
32.    אם־נבלת  בהתנשא 
ואם־זמות  יד  לפה׃
    If thou hast done foolishly in lifting up thyself, or if thou hast thought evil, lay thine hand upon thy mouth.     "If you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself, or if you have thought evil, put your hand over your mouth.     If you have done foolishly in lifting yourself up, or if you have had evil designs, put your hand over your mouth.
 
33.    כי  מיץ  חלב  יוציא 
חמאה  ומיץ־אף
יוציא  דם  ומיץ
אפים  יוציא  ריב׃
    Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood: so the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.     For as the churning of milk brings forth butter, and the wringing of the nose brings forth blood; so the forcing of wrath brings forth strife."     The shaking of milk makes butter, and the twisting of the nose makes blood come: so the forcing of wrath is a cause of fighting.
