ויבוא אלי אנשים מזקני ישראל וישבו לפני׃ |

בן־אדם האנשים האלה העלו גלוליהם על־לבם ומכשול עונם נתנו נכח פניהם האדרש אדרש להם׃ |
Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them? | Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their heart, and put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face: should I be inquired of at all by them? | Son of man, these men have taken their false gods into their hearts and put before their faces the sin which is the cause of their fall: am I to give ear when they come to me for directions? | |||

לכן דבר־אותם ואמרת אליהם כה־אמר אדני יהוה איש איש מבית ישראל אשר יעלה את־גלוליו אל־לבו ומכשול עונו ישים נכח פניו ובא אל־ הנביא אני יהוה נעניתי לו בה ברב גלוליו׃ |
Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols; | Therefore speak to them, and tell them, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Every man of the house of Israel who takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet; I Yahweh will answer him therein according to the multitude of his idols; | For this cause say to them, These are the words of the Lord: Every man of Israel who has taken his false god into his heart, and put before his face the sin which is the cause of his fall, and comes to the prophet; I the Lord will give him an answer by myself in agreement with the number of his false gods; | |||

למען תפש את־בית־ישראל בלבם אשר נזרו מעלי בגלוליהם כלם׃ |
That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols. | that I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols. | So as to take the children of Israel in the thoughts of their hearts, because they have become strange to me through their false gods. | |||

לכן אמר אל־בית ישראל כה אמר אדני יהוה שובו והשיבו מעל גלוליכם ומעל כל־תועבתיכם השיבו פניכם׃ |
Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations. | Therefore tell the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Return, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations. | For this cause say to the children of Israel, These are the words of the Lord: Come back and give up your false gods and let your faces be turned from your disgusting things. | |||

כי איש איש מבית ישראל ומהגר אשר־יגור בישראל וינזר מאחרי ויעל גלוליו אל־לבו ומכשול עונו ישים נכח פניו ובא אל־הנביא לדרש־לו בי אני יהוה נענה־לו בי׃ |
For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to enquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself: | For everyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who sojourn in Israel, who separates himself from me, and takes his idols into his heart, and puts the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and comes to the prophet to inquire for himself of me; I Yahweh will answer him by myself: | When any one of the men of Israel, or of those from other lands who are living in Israel, who has become strange to me, and takes his false gods into his heart, and puts before his face the sin which is the cause of his fall, comes to the prophet to get directions from me; I the Lord will give him an answer by myself: | |||

ונתתי פני באיש ההוא והשמתיהו לאות ולמשלים והכרתיו מתוך עמי וידעתם כי־אני יהוה׃ |
And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD. | and I will set my face against that man, and will make him an astonishment, for a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and you shall know that I am Yahweh. | And my face will be turned against that man, and I will make him a sign and a common saying, cutting him off from among my people; and you will be certain that I am the Lord. | |||

והנביא כי־יפתה ודבר דבר אני יהוה פתיתי את הנביא ההוא ונטיתי את־ידי עליו והשמדתיו מתוך עמי ישראל׃ |
And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel. | If the prophet is deceived and speak a word, I, Yahweh, have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand on him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel. | And if the prophet, tricked by deceit, says anything, it is I the Lord by whom he has been tricked, and I will put out my hand against him, and he will be cut off from among my people Israel. | |||

ונשאו עונם כעון הדרש כעון הנביא יהיה׃ |
And they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity: the punishment of the prophet shall be even as the punishment of him that seeketh unto him; | They shall bear their iniquity: the iniquity of the prophet shall be even as the iniquity of him who seeks [to him]; | And the punishment of their sin will be on them: the sin of the prophet will be the same as the sin of him who goes to him for directions; | |||

למען לא־יתעו עוד בית־ישראל מאחרי ולא־יטמאו עוד בכל־פשעיהם והיו לי לעם ואני אהיה להם לאלהים נאם אדני יהוה׃ |
That the house of Israel may go no more astray from me, neither be polluted any more with all their transgressions; but that they may be my people, and I may be their God, saith the Lord GOD. | that the house of Israel may go no more astray from me, neither defile themselves any more with all their transgressions; but that they may be my people, and I may be their God, says the Lord Yahweh. | So that the children of Israel may no longer go wandering away from me, or make themselves unclean with all their wrongdoing; but they will be my people, and I will be their God, says the Lord. | |||

בן־אדם ארץ כי תחטא־לי למעל־מעל ונטיתי ידי עליה ושברתי לה מטה־ לחם והשלחתי־בה רעב והכרתי ממנה אדם ובהמה׃ |
Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it: | Son of man, when a land sins against me by committing a trespass, and I stretch out my hand on it, and break the staff of its bread, and send famine on it, and cut off from it man and animal; | Son of man, when a land, sinning against me, does wrong, and my hand is stretched out against it, and the support of its bread is broken, and I make it short of food, cutting off man and beast from it: | |||

והיו שלשת האנשים האלה בתוכה נח דנאל ואיוב המה בצדקתם ינצלו נפשם נאם אדני יהוה׃ |
Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD. | though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, says the Lord Yahweh. | Even if these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, only themselves would they keep safe by their righteousness, says the Lord. | |||

לו־חיה רעה אעביר בארץ ושכלתה והיתה שממה מבלי עובר מפני החיה׃ |
If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts: | If I cause evil animals to pass through the land, and they ravage it, and it be made desolate, so that no man may pass through because of the animals; | Or if I send evil beasts through the land causing destruction and making it waste, so that no man may go through because of the beasts: | |||

שלשת האנשים האלה בתוכה חי־אני נאם אדני יהוה אם־בנים ואם־בנות יצילו המה לבדם ינצלו והארץ תהיה שממה׃ |
Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be delivered, but the land shall be desolate. | though these three men were in it, as I live, says the Lord Yahweh, they should deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only should be delivered, but the land should be desolate. | Even if these three men were in it, by my life, says the Lord, they would not keep safe their sons or daughters, but only themselves, and the land would be made waste. | |||

או חרב אביא על־הארץ ההיא ואמרתי חרב תעבר בארץ והכרתי ממנה אדם ובהמה׃ |
Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it: | Or if I bring a sword on that land, and say, Sword, go through the land; so that I cut off from it man and animal; | Or if I send a sword against that land, and say, Sword, go through the land, cutting off from it man and beast: | |||

ושלשת האנשים האלה בתוכה חי־אני נאם אדני יהוה לא יצילו בנים ובנות כי הם לבדם ינצלו׃ |

או דבר אשלח אל־הארץ ההיא ושפכתי חמתי עליה בדם להכרית ממנה אדם ובהמה׃ |
Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast: | Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my wrath on it in blood, to cut off from it man and animal; | Or if I send disease into that land, letting loose my wrath on it in blood, cutting off from it man and beast: | |||

ונח דנאל ואיוב בתוכה חי־אני נאם אדני יהוה אם־בן אם־בת יצילו המה בצדקתם יצילו נפשם׃ |

כי כה אמר אדני יהוה אף כי־ארבעת שפטי הרעים חרב ורעב וחיה רעה ודבר שלחתי אל־ירושלם להכרית ממנה אדם ובהמה׃ |
For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast? | For thus says the Lord Yahweh: How much more when I send my four sore judgments on Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the evil animals, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and animal! | For this is what the Lord has said: How much more when I send my four bitter punishments on Jerusalem, the sword and need of food and evil beasts and disease, cutting off from it man and beast? | |||

והנה נותרה־בה פלטה המוצאים בנים ובנות הנם יוצאים אליכם וראיתם את־דרכם ואת־עלילותם ונחמתם על־הרעה אשר הבאתי על־ירושלם את כל־אשר הבאתי עליה׃ |
Yet, behold, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought upon it. | Yet, behold, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be carried forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth to you, and you shall see their way and their doings; and you shall be comforted concerning the evil that I have brought on Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have brought on it. | But truly, there will still be a small band who will be safe, even sons and daughters: and they will come out to you, and you will see their ways and their doings: and you will be comforted about the evil which I have sent on Jerusalem, even about everything I have sent on it. | |||

ונחמו אתכם כי־תראו את־דרכם ואת־עלילותם וידעתם כי לא חנם עשיתי את כל־אשר־עשיתי בה נאם אדני יהוה׃ |
And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, saith the Lord GOD. | They shall comfort you, when you see their way and their doings; and you shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have done in it, says the Lord Yahweh. | They will give you comfort when you see their ways and their doings: and you will be certain that not for nothing have I done all the things I have done in it, says the Lord. | |||
