1.    בשנת  שלוש  למלכות 
יהויקים  מלך־יהודה
בא  נבוכדנאצר
מלך־בבל  ירושלם
ויצר  עליה׃
    In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.     In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Jerusalem, and besieged it.     onus verbi Domini ad Israhel in manu Malachi
 
2.    ויתן  אדני  בידו 
את־יהויקים
מלך־יהודה  ומקצת
כלי  בית־האלהים
ויביאם  ארץ־שנער
בית  אלהיו
ואת־הכלים  הביא
בית  אוצר  אלהיו׃
    And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.     The Lord{The word translated "Lord" is "Adonai."} gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God{The Hebrew word rendered "God" is "Elohim."}; and he carried them into the land of Shinar to the house of his god: and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.     dilexi vos dicit Dominus et dixistis in quo dilexisti nos nonne frater erat Esau Iacob dicit Dominus et dilexi Iacob
 
3.    ויאמר  המלך  לאשפנז 
רב  סריסיו  להביא
מבני  ישראל  ומזרע
המלוכה  ומן־
הפרתמים׃
    And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;     The king spoke to Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring in [certain] of the children of Israel, even of the seed royal and of the nobles;     Esau autem odio habui et posui montes eius in solitudinem et hereditatem eius in dracones deserti
 
4.    ילדים  אשר  אין־בהם 
כל־מאום  וטובי
מראה  ומשכילים
בכל־חכמה  וידעי
דעת  ומביני  מדע
ואשר  כח  בהם  לעמד
בהיכל  המלך  וללמדם
ספר  ולשון  כשדים׃
    Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.     youths in whom was no blemish, but well-favored, and skillful in all wisdom, and endowed with knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability to stand in the king's palace; and that he should teach them the learning and the language of the Chaldeans.     quod si dixerit Idumea destructi sumus sed revertentes aedificabimus quae deserta sunt haec dicit Dominus exercituum isti aedificabunt et ego destruam et vocabuntur Termini impietatis et Populus cui iratus est Dominus usque in aeternum
 
5.    וימן  להם  המלך 
דבר־יום  ביומו
מפת־בג  המלך  ומיין
משתיו  ולגדלם  שנים
שלוש  ומקצתם  יעמדו
לפני  המלך׃
    And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.     The king appointed for them a daily portion of the king's dainties, and of the wine which he drank, and that they should be nourished three years; that at its end they should stand before the king.     et oculi vestri videbunt et vos dicetis magnificetur Dominus super terminum Israhel
 
6.    ויהי  בהם  מבני 
יהודה  דניאל  חנניה
מישאל  ועזריה׃
    Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:     Now among these were, of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.     filius honorat patrem et servus dominum suum si ergo pater ego sum ubi est honor meus et si dominus ego sum ubi est timor meus dicit Dominus exercituum ad vos o sacerdotes qui despicitis nomen meum et dixistis in quo despeximus nomen tuum
 
7.    וישם  להם  שר 
הסריסים  שמות  וישם
לדניאל  בלטשאצר
ולחנניה  שדרך
ולמישאל  מישך
ולעזריה  עבד  נגו׃
    Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.     The prince of the eunuchs gave names to them: to Daniel he gave [the name of] Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, [of] Shadrach; and to Mishael, [of] Meshach; and to Azariah, [of] Abednego.     offertis super altare meum panem pollutum et dicitis in quo polluimus te in eo quod dicitis mensa Domini despecta est
 
8.    וישם  דניאל  על־לבו 
אשר  לא־יתגאל
בפתבג  המלך  וביין
משתיו  ויבקש  משר
הסריסים  אשר  לא
יתגאל׃
    But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.     But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king's dainties, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.     si offeratis caecum ad immolandum nonne malum est et si offeratis claudum et languidum nonne malum est offer illud duci tuo si placuerit ei aut si susceperit faciem tuam dicit Dominus exercituum
 
9.    ויתן  האלהים 
את־דניאל  לחסד
ולרחמים  לפני  שר
הסריסים׃
    Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.     Now God made Daniel to find kindness and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs.     et nunc deprecamini vultum Dei ut misereatur vestri de manu enim vestra factum est hoc si quo modo suscipiat facies vestras dicit Dominus exercituum
 
10.    ויאמר  שר  הסריסים 
לדניאל  ירא  אני
את־אדני  המלך  אשר
מנה  את־  מאכלכם
ואת־משתיכם  אשר
למה  יראה  את־פניכם
זעפים  מן־הילדים
אשר  כגילכם  וחיבתם
את־ראשי  למלך׃
    And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.     The prince of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the youths who are of your own age? so would you endanger my head with the king.     quis est in vobis qui claudat ostia et incendat altare meum gratuito non est mihi voluntas in vobis dicit Dominus exercituum et munus non suscipiam de manu vestra
 
11.    ויאמר  דניאל 
אל־המלצר  אשר  מנה
שר  הסריסים
על־דניאל  חנניה
מישאל  ועזריה׃
    Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,     Then said Daniel to the steward whom the prince of the eunuchs had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:     ab ortu enim solis usque ad occasum magnum est nomen meum in gentibus et in omni loco sacrificatur et offertur nomini meo oblatio munda quia magnum nomen meum in gentibus dicit Dominus exercituum
 
12.    נס־נא  את־עבדיך 
ימים  עשרה
ויתנו־לנו
מן־הזרעים  ונאכלה
ומים  ונשתה׃
    Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.     Test your servants, I beg you, ten days; and let them give us vegetables to eat, and water to drink.     et vos polluistis illud in eo quod dicitis mensa Domini contaminata est et quod superponitur contemptibile est cum igni qui illud devorat
 
13.    ויראו  לפניך 
מראינו  ומראה
הילדים  האכלים  את
פתבג  המלך  וכאשר
תראה  עשה
עם־עבדיך׃
    Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.     Then let our faces be looked on before you, and the face of the youths who eat of the king's dainties; and as you see, deal with your servants.     et dixistis ecce de labore et exsuflastis illud dicit Dominus exercituum et intulistis de rapinis claudum et languidum et intulistis munus numquid suscipiam illud de manu vestra dicit Dominus
 
14.    וישמע  להם  לדבר 
הזה  וינסם  ימים
עשרה׃
    So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.     So he listened to them in this matter, and proved them ten days.     maledictus dolosus qui habet in grege suo masculum et votum faciens immolat debile Domino quia rex magnus ego dicit Dominus exercituum et nomen meum horribile in gentibus
 
15.    ומקצת  ימים  עשרה 
נראה  מראיהם  טוב
ובריאי  בשר
מן־כל־הילדים
האכלים  את  פתבג
המלך׃
    And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.     At the end of ten days their faces appeared fairer, and they were fatter in flesh, than all the youths who ate of the king's dainties.
