1.    ויהי  בימים  ההם 
ומלך  אין  בישראל
ויהי  איש  לוי  גר
בירכתי  הר־  אפרים
ויקח־לו  אשה  פילגש
מבית  לחם  יהודה׃
    And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehemjudah.     It happened in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.     Now in those days, when there was no king in Israel, a certain Levite was living in the inmost parts of the hill-country of Ephraim, and he got for himself a servant-wife from Beth-lehem-judah.
 
2.    ותזנה  עליו  פילגשו 
ותלך  מאתו  אל־בית
אביה  אל־בית  לחם
יהודה  ותהי־  שם
ימים  ארבעה  חדשים׃
    And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father's house to Bethlehemjudah, and was there four whole months.     His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father's house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there the space of four months.     And his servant-wife was angry with him, and went away from him to her father's house at Beth-lehem-judah, and was there for four months.
 
3.    ויקם  אישה  וילך 
אחריה  לדבר  על־לבה
להשיבו  ונערו  עמו
וצמד  חמרים
ותביאהו  בית  אביה
ויראהו  אבי  הנערה
וישמח  לקראתו׃
    And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father's house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.     Her husband arose, and went after her, to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of donkeys: and she brought him into her father's house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.     Then her husband got up and went after her, with the purpose of talking kindly to her, and taking her back with him; he had with him his young man and two asses: and she took him into her father's house, and her father, when he saw him, came forward to him with joy.
 
4.    ויחזק־בו  חתנו  אבי 
הנערה  וישב  אתו
שלשת  ימים  ויאכלו
וישתו  וילינו  שם׃
    And his father in law, the damsel's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.     His father-in-law, the young lady's father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they ate and drink, and lodged there.     And his father-in-law, the girl's father, kept him there for three days; and they had food and drink and took their rest there.
 
5.    ויהי  ביום  הרביעי 
וישכימו  בבקר  ויקם
ללכת  ויאמר  אבי
הנערה  אל־  חתנו
סעד  לבך  פת־לחם
ואחר  תלכו׃
    And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel's father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.     It happened on the fourth day, that they arose early in the morning, and he rose up to depart: and the young lady's father said to his son-in-law, "Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way."     Now on the fourth day they got up early in the morning and he made ready to go away; but the girl's father said to his son-in-law, Take a little food to keep up your strength, and then go on your way.
 
6.    וישבו  ויאכלו 
שניהם  יחדו  וישתו
ויאמר  אבי  הנערה
אל־האיש  הואל־נא
ולין  ויטב  לבך׃
    And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel's father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.     So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together: and the young lady's father said to the man, "Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry."     So seating themselves they had food and drink, the two of them together; and the girl's father said to the man, If it is your pleasure, take your rest here tonight, and let your heart be glad.
 
7.    ויקם  האיש  ללכת 
ויפצר־בו  חתנו
וישב  וילן  שם׃
    And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.     The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he lodged there again.     And the man got up to go away, but his father-in-law would not let him go, so he took his rest there again for the night.
 
8.    וישכם  בבקר  ביום 
החמישי  ללכת  ויאמר
אבי  הנערה  סעד־נא
לבבך  והתמהמהו
עד־נטות  היום
ויאכלו  שניהם׃
    And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel's father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.     He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady's father said, "Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines;" and they both ate.     Then early on the morning of the fifth day he got up to go away; but the girl's father said, Keep up your strength; so the two of them had a meal, and the man and his woman and his servant did not go till after the middle of the day.
 
9.    ויקם  האיש  ללכת 
הוא  ופילגשו  ונערו
ויאמר  לו  חתנו  אבי
הנערה  הנה  נא  רפה
היום  לערב  לינו־נא
הנה  חנות  היום  לין
פה  וייטב  לבבך
והשכמתם  מחר
לדרככם  והלכת
לאהלך׃
    And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel's father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.     When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady's father, said to him, "Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night: behold, the day grows to an end, lodge here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home."     And when they got up to go away, his father-in-law, the girl's father, said to him, Now evening is coming on, so do not go tonight; see, the day is almost gone; take your rest here and let your heart be glad, and tomorrow early, go on your way back to your house.
 
10.    ולא־אבה  האיש  ללון 
ויקם  וילך  ויבא
עד־נכח  יבוס  היא
ירושלם  ועמו  צמד
חמורים  חבושים
ופילגשו  עמו׃
    But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.     But the man wouldn't stay that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus (the same is Jerusalem): and there were with him a couple of donkeys saddled; his concubine also was with him.     But the man would not be kept there that night, and he got up and went away and came opposite to Jebus (which is Jerusalem); and he had with him the two asses, ready for travelling, and his woman.
 
11.    הם  עם־יבוס  והיום 
רד  מאד  ויאמר  הנער
אל־אדניו  לכה־נא
ונסורה  אל־
עיר־היבוסי  הזאת
ונלין  בה׃
    And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.     When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, "Please come and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it."     When they got near Jebus the day was far gone; and the servant said to his master, Now let us go from our road into this town of the Jebusites and take our night's rest there.
 
12.    ויאמר  אליו  אדניו 
לא  נסור  אל־עיר
נכרי  אשר  לא־מבני
ישראל  הנה  ועברנו
עד־גבעה׃
    And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.     His master said to him, "We won't turn aside into the city of a foreigner, that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah."     But his master said to him, We will not go out of our way into a strange town, whose people are not of the children of Israel; but we will go on to Gibeah.
 
13.    ויאמר  לנערו  לך 
ונקרבה  באחד
המקמות  ולנו  בגבעה
או  ברמה׃
    And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.     He said to his servant, "Come and let us draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah."     And he said to his servant, Come, let us go on to one of these places, stopping for the night in Gibeah or Ramah.
 
14.    ויעברו  וילכו  ותבא 
להם  השמש  אצל
הגבעה  אשר  לבנימן׃
    And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.     So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near to Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.     So they went on their way; and the sun went down when they were near Gibeah in the land of Benjamin.
 
15.    ויסרו  שם  לבוא 
ללון  בגבעה  ויבא
וישב  ברחוב  העיר
ואין  איש  מאסף־
אותם  הביתה  ללון׃
    And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.     They turned aside there, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city; for there was no man who took them into his house to lodge.     And they went off the road there with the purpose of stopping for the night in Gibeah: and he went in, seating himself in the street of the town, for no one took them into his house for the night.
 
16.    והנה  איש  זקן  בא 
מן־מעשהו  מן־השדה
בערב  והאיש  מהר
אפרים  והוא־  גר
בגבעה  ואנשי  המקום
בני  ימיני׃
    And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.     Behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even: now the man was of the hill country of Ephraim, and he sojourned in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.     Now when it was evening they saw an old man coming back from his work in the fields; he was from the hill-country of Ephraim and was living in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.
 
17.    וישא  עיניו  וירא 
את־האיש  הארח  ברחב
העיר  ויאמר  האיש
הזקן  אנה  תלך
ומאין  תבוא׃
    And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?     He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, "Where are you going? Where did you come from?"     And when he saw the traveller in the street of the town, the old man said, Where are you going? and where do you come from?
 
18.    ויאמר  אליו  עברים 
אנחנו  מבית־לחם
יהודה  עד־ירכתי
הר־אפרים  משם  אנכי
ואלך  עד־בית  לחם
יהודה  ואת־בית
יהוה  אני  הלך  ואין
איש  מאסף  אותי
הביתה׃
    And he said unto him, We are passing from Bethlehemjudah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Bethlehemjudah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.     He said to him, "We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to the house of Yahweh; and there is no man who takes me into his house.     And he said to him, We are on our way from Beth-lehem-judah to the inmost parts of the hill-country of Ephraim: I came from there and went to Beth-lehem-judah: now I am on my way back to my house, but no man will take me into his house.
 
19.    וגם־תבן  גם־מספוא 
יש  לחמורינו  וגם
לחם  ויין  יש־לי
ולאמתך  ולנער
עם־עבדיך  אין
מחסור  כל־דבר׃
    Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.     Yet there is both straw and provender for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your handmaid, and for the young man who is with your servants: there is no want of anything."     But we have dry grass and food for our asses, as well as bread and wine for me, and for the woman, and for the young man with us: we have no need of anything.
 
20.    ויאמר  האיש  הזקן 
שלום  לך  רק
כל־מחסורך  עלי  רק
ברחוב  אל־תלן׃
    And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.     The old man said, "Peace be to you; howsoever let all your wants lie on me; only don't lodge in the street."     And the old man said, Peace be with you; let all your needs be my care; only do not take your rest in the street.
 
21.    ויביאהו  לביתו 
ויבול  לחמורים
וירחצו  רגליהם
ויאכלו  וישתו׃
    So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.     So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder; and they washed their feet, and ate and drink.     So he took them into his house and gave the asses food; and after washing their feet they took food and drink.
 
22.    המה  מיטיבים 
את־לבם  והנה  אנשי
העיר  אנשי
בני־בליעל  נסבו
את־  הבית  מתדפקים
על־הדלת  ויאמרו
אל־האיש  בעל  הבית
הזקן  לאמר  הוצא
את־  האיש  אשר־בא
אל־ביתך  ונדענו׃
    Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.     As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain base fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, "Bring out the man who came into your house, that we may have sex with him!"     While they were taking their pleasure at the meal, the good-for-nothing men of the town came round the house, giving blows on the door; and they said to the old man, the master of the house, Send out that man who came to your house, so that we may take our pleasure with him.
 
23.    ויצא  אליהם  האיש 
בעל  הבית  ויאמר
אלהם  אל־אחי
אל־תרעו  נא  אחרי
אשר־בא  האיש  הזה
אל־ביתי  אל־תעשו
את־הנבלה  הזאת׃
    And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.     The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, "No, my brothers, please don't act so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into my house, don't do this folly.     So the man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said, No, my brothers, do not this evil thing; this man has come into my house, and you are not to do him this wrong.
 
24.    הנה  בתי  הבתולה 
ופילגשהו
אוציאה־נא  אותם
וענו  אותם  ועשו
להם  הטוב  בעיניכם
ולאיש  הזה  לא  תעשו
דבר  הנבלה  הזאת׃
    Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.     Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don't do any such folly."     See, here is my daughter, a virgin, and his servant-wife: I will send them out for you to take them and do with them whatever you will. But do no such thing of shame to this man.
 
25.    ולא־אבו  האנשים 
לשמע  לו  ויחזק
האיש  בפילגשו  ויצא
אליהם  החוץ  וידעו
אותה  ויתעללו־בה
כל־הלילה  עד־הבקר
וישלחוה  בעלות
השחר׃
    But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.     But the men wouldn't listen to him: so the man laid hold of his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning: and when the day began to dawn, they let her go.     But the men would not give ear to him: so the man took his woman and sent her out to them; and they took her by force, using her for their pleasure all night till the morning; and when dawn came they let her go.
 
26.    ותבא  האשה  לפנות 
הבקר  ותפל  פתח
בית־האיש
אשר־אדוניה  שם  עד־
האור׃
    Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, till it was light.     Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her lord was, until it was light.     Then at the dawn of day the woman came, and, falling down at the door of the man's house where her master was, was stretched there till it was light.
 
27.    ויקם  אדניה  בבקר 
ויפתח  דלתות  הבית
ויצא  ללכת  לדרכו
והנה  האשה  פילגשו
נפלת  פתח  הבית
וידיה  על־הסף׃
    And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.     Her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold.     In the morning her master got up, and opening the door of the house went out to go on his way; and he saw his servant-wife stretched on the earth at the door of the house with her hands on the step.
 
28.    ויאמר  אליה  קומי 
ונלכה  ואין  ענה
ויקחה  על־החמור
ויקם  האיש  וילך
למקמו׃
    And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.     He said to her, "Get up, and let us be going!" but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.     And he said to her, Get up and let us be going; but there was no answer; so he took her up and put her on the ass, and went on his way and came to his house.
 
29.    ויבא  אל־ביתו  ויקח 
את־המאכלת  ויחזק
בפילגשו  וינתחה
לעצמיה  לשנים  עשר
נתחים  וישלחה  בכל
גבול  ישראל׃
    And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.     When he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.     And when he had come to his house, he got his knife, and took the woman, cutting her up bone by bone into twelve parts, which he sent through all Israel.
 
30.    והיה  כל־הראה  ואמר 
לא־נהיתה
ולא־נראתה  כזאת
למיום  עלות  בני־
ישראל  מארץ  מצרים
עד  היום  הזה
שימו־לכם  עליה  עצו
ודברו׃
    And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.     It was so, that all who saw it said, "There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak."     And he gave orders to the men whom he sent, saying, This is what you are to say to all the men of Israel, Has ever an act like this been done from the day when the children of Israel came out of Egypt to this day? Give thought to it, turning it over in your minds, and give your opinion of it.
