ויאמר יהוה אל־שמואל עד־מתי אתה מתאבל אל־שאול ואני מאסתיו ממלך על־ישראל מלא קרנך שמן ולך אשלחך אל־ישי בית־הלחמי כי־ראיתי בבניו לי מלך׃ |
And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons. | Yahweh said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided a king for myself among his sons." | And the Lord said to Samuel, How long will you go on sorrowing for Saul, seeing that I have put him from his place as king over Israel? Take oil in your vessel and go; I will send you to Jesse, the Beth-lehemite: for I have got a king for myself among his sons. | |||

ויאמר שמואל איך אלך ושמע שאול והרגני ויאמר יהוה עגלת בקר תקח בידך ואמרת לזבח ליהוה באתי׃ |
And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD. | Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me." Yahweh said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. | And Samuel said, How is it possible for me to go? If Saul gets news of it he will put me to death. And the Lord said, Take a young cow with you and say, I have come to make an offering to the Lord. | |||

וקראת לישי בזבח ואנכי אודיעך את אשר־תעשה ומשחת לי את אשר־אמר אליך׃ |
And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee. | Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. You shall anoint to me him whom I name to you." | And send for Jesse to be present at the offering, and I will make clear to you what you are to do: and you are to put the holy oil on him whose name I give you. | |||

ויעש שמואל את אשר דבר יהוה ויבא בית לחם ויחרדו זקני העיר לקראתו ויאמר שלם בואך׃ |
And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably? | Samuel did that which Yahweh spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, "Do you come peaceably?" | And Samuel did as the Lord said and came to Beth-lehem. And the responsible men of the town came out to him in fear and said, Do you come in peace? | |||

ויאמר שלום לזבח ליהוה באתי התקדשו ובאתם אתי בזבח ויקדש את־ישי ואת־בניו ויקרא להם לזבח׃ |
And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice. | He said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice." He sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice. | And he said, In peace: I have come to make an offering to the Lord: make yourselves clean and come with me to make the offering. And he made Jesse and his sons clean, and sent for them to be present at the offering. | |||

ויהי בבואם וירא את־אליאב ויאמר אך נגד יהוה משיחו׃ |
And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD's anointed is before him. | It happened, when they had come, that he looked at Eliab, and said, "Surely Yahweh's anointed is before him." | Now when they came, looking at Eliab, he said, Clearly the man of the Lord's selection is before him. | |||

ויאמר יהוה אל־שמואל אל־תבט אל־מראהו ואל־גבה קומתו כי מאסתיהו כי לא אשר יראה האדם כי האדם יראה לעינים ויהוה יראה ללבב׃ |
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. | But Yahweh said to Samuel, "Don't look on his face, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for [Yahweh sees] not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart." | But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not take note of his face or how tall he is, because I will not have him: for the Lord's view is not man's; man takes note of the outer form, but the Lord sees the heart. | |||

ויקרא ישי אל־אבינדב ויעברהו לפני שמואל ויאמר גם־בזה לא־בחר יהוה׃ |
Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. | Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, "Neither has Yahweh chosen this one." | Then Jesse sent for Abinadab and made him come before Samuel. And he said, The Lord has not taken this one. | |||

ויעבר ישי שמה ויאמר גם־בזה לא־בחר יהוה׃ |
Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. | Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. He said, "Neither has Yahweh chosen this one." | Then Jesse made Shammah come before him. And he said, The Lord has not taken this one. | |||

ויעבר ישי שבעת בניו לפני שמואל ויאמר שמואל אל־ישי לא־בחר יהוה באלה׃ |
Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. | Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, "Yahweh has not chosen these." | And Jesse made his seven sons come before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, The Lord has not taken any of these. | |||

ויאמר שמואל אל־ישי התמו הנערים ויאמר עוד שאר הקטן והנה רעה בצאן ויאמר שמואל אל־ישי שלחה וקחנו כי לא־נסב עד־באו פה׃ |
And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. | Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your children here?" He said, "There remains yet the youngest, and behold, he is keeping the sheep." Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and get him; for we will not sit down until he comes here." | Then Samuel said to Jesse, Are all your children here? And he said, There is still the youngest, and he is looking after the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and make him come here: for we will not take our seats till he is here. | |||

וישלח ויביאהו והוא אדמוני עם־יפה עינים וטוב ראי ויאמר יהוה קום משחהו כי־זה הוא׃ |
And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. | He sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful face, and goodly to look on. Yahweh said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is he." | So he sent and made him come in. Now he had red hair and beautiful eyes and pleasing looks. And the Lord said, Come, put the oil on him, for this is he. | |||

ויקח שמואל את־קרן השמן וימשח אתו בקרב אחיו ותצלח רוח־יהוה אל־ דוד מהיום ההוא ומעלה ויקם שמואל וילך הרמתה׃ |
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. | Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: and the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on David from that day forward. ורוח יהוה סרה מעם שאול ובעתתו רוח־רעה מאת יהוה׃ |
But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him. | Now the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh troubled him. | Now the spirit of the Lord had gone from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord was troubling him. | |||

ויאמרו עבדי־שאול אליו הנה־נא רוח־אלהים רעה מבעתך׃ |
And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee. | Saul's servants said to him, "See now, an evil spirit from God troubles you. | And Saul's servants said to him, See now, an evil spirit from God is troubling you. | |||

יאמר־נא אדננו עבדיך לפניך יבקשו איש ידע מנגן בכנור והיה בהיות עליך רוח־אלהים רעה ונגן בידו וטוב לך׃ |
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well. | Let our lord now command your servants who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. It shall happen, when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he shall play with his hand, and you shall be well." | Now give orders to your servants who are here before you to go in search of a man who is an expert player on a corded instrument: and it will be that when the evil spirit from God is on you, he will make music for you on his instrument, and you will get well. | |||

ויאמר שאול אל־עבדיו ראו־נא לי איש מיטיב לנגן והביאותם אלי׃ |
And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me. | Saul said to his servants, "Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me." | And Saul said to his servants, Then get me a man who is an expert player, and make him come to me. | |||

ויען אחד מהנערים ויאמר הנה ראיתי בן לישי בית הלחמי ידע נגן וגבור חיל ואיש מלחמה ונבון דבר ואיש תאר ויהוה עמו׃ |
Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him. | Then one of the young men answered, and said, "Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Yahweh is with him." | Then one of the servants in answer said, I have seen a son of Jesse, the Beth-lehemite, who is expert at playing, and a strong man and a man of war; and he is wise in his words, and pleasing in looks, and the Lord is with him. | |||

וישלח שאול מלאכים אל־ישי ויאמר שלחה אלי את־דוד בנך אשר בצאן׃ |
Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep. | Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, "Send me David your son, who is with the sheep." | So Saul sent his servants to Jesse and said, Send me your son David who is with the sheep. | |||

ויקח ישי חמור לחם ונאד יין וגדי עזים אחד וישלח ביד־דוד בנו אל־שאול׃ |
And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul. | Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by David his son to Saul. | And Jesse took five cakes of bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them to Saul by David. | |||

ויבא דוד אל־שאול ויעמד לפניו ויאהבהו מאד ויהי־לו נשא כלים׃ |
And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer. | David came to Saul, and stood before him. He loved him greatly; and he became his armor bearer. | And David came to Saul, waiting before him: and he became very dear to Saul, who made him his servant, giving him the care of his arms. | |||

וישלח שאול אל־ישי לאמר יעמד־נא דוד לפני כי־מצא חן בעיני׃ |
And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight. | Saul sent to Jesse, saying, "Please let David stand before me; for he has found favor in my sight." | And Saul sent to Jesse saying, Let David be with me, for he is pleasing to me. | |||

והיה בהיות רוח־אלהים אל־שאול ולקח דוד את־הכנור ונגן בידו ורוח לשאול וטוב לו וסרה מעליו רוח הרעה׃ |
And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him. | It happened, when the [evil] spirit from God was on Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him. | And whenever the evil spirit from God came on Saul, David took his instrument and made music: so new life came to Saul, and he got well, and the evil spirit went away from him. | |||
