ויהי ככלתו לדבר אל־שאול ונפש יהונתן נקשרה בנפש דוד ויאהבו יהונתן כנפשו׃ |

ויאמר שאול אל־דוד הנה בתי הגדולה מרב אתה אתן־לך לאשה אך היה־ לי לבן־חיל והלחם מלחמות יהוה ושאול אמר אל־תהי ידי בו ותהי־בו יד־ פלשתים׃ |
And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the LORD's battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him. | Saul said to David, "Behold, my elder daughter Merab, I will give her to you as wife. Only be valiant for me, and fight Yahweh's battles." ויהי בעת תת את־מרב בת־שאול לדוד והיא נתנה לעדריאל המחלתי לאשה׃ |

ותאהב מיכל בת־שאול את־דוד ויגדו לשאול וישר הדבר בעיניו׃ |

And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain. | Saul said, I will give her to him, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. ויצו שאול את־עבדו דברו אל־דוד בלט לאמר הנה חפץ בך המלך וכל־ עבדיו אהבוך ועתה התחתן במלך׃ |

וידברו עבדי שאול באזני דוד את־הדברים האלה ויאמר דוד הנקלה בעיניכם התחתן במלך ואנכי איש־רש ונקלה׃ |
And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed? | Saul's servants spoke those words in the ears of David. David said, "Does it seems to you a light thing to be the king's son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?" | And Saul's servants said these things to David. And David said, Does it seem to you a small thing to be the king's son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man, of no great name? | |||

ויגדו עבדי שאול לו לאמר כדברים האלה דבר דוד׃ |
And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David. | The servants of Saul told him, saying, "David spoke like this." | And the servants of Saul gave him an account of what David had said. | |||

ויאמר שאול כה־תאמרו לדוד אין־חפץ למלך במהר כי במאה ערלות פלשתים להנקם באיבי המלך ושאול חשב להפיל את־דוד ביד־פלשתים׃ |
And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. | Saul said, "You shall tell David, 'The king desires no dowry except one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies.'" Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. | And Saul said, Then say to David, The king has no desire for any bride-price, but only for the private parts of a hundred Philistines so that the king may get the better of his haters. But it was in Saul's mind that David might come to his end by the hands of the Philistines. | |||

ויקם דוד וילך הוא ואנשיו ויך בפלשתים מאתים איש ויבא דוד את־ ערלתיהם וימלאום למלך להתחתן במלך ויתן־לו שאול את־מיכל בתו לאשה׃ |
Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife. | and David arose and went, he and his men, and killed of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full number to the king, that he might be the king's son-in-law. ויאסף שאול לרא מפני דוד עוד ויהי שאול איב את־דוד כל־הימים׃ |
And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David's enemy continually. | Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul was David's enemy continually. | And Saul's fear of David became all the greater, and he went on hating him, day by day. | |||

ויצאו שרי פלשתים ויהי מדי צאתם שכל דוד מכל עבדי שאול וייקר שמו מאד׃ |
Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by. | Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it happened, as often as they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was highly esteemed. | Then the rulers of the Philistines went out to war: and whenever they went out, David did more wisely than all the other servants of Saul, so that his name became greatly honoured. | |||
