וילך דוד משם וימלט אל־מערת עדלם וישמעו אחיו וכל־בית אביו וירדו אליו שמה׃ |

And the prophet Gad said unto David, Abide not in the hold; depart, and get thee into the land of Judah. Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hareth. | The prophet Gad said to David, "Don't stay in the stronghold. Depart, and go into the land of Judah." וישמע שאול כי נודע דוד ואנשים אשר אתו ושאול יושב בגבעה תחת־ האשל ברמה וחניתו בידו וכל־עבדיו נצבים עליו׃ |
When Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men that were with him, (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him;) | Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him. ויאמר שאול לעבדיו הנצבים עליו שמעו־נא בני ימיני גם־לכלכם יתן בן־ישי שדות וכרמים לכלכם ישים שרי אלפים ושרי מאות׃ |
Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, ye Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds; | Saul said to his servants who stood about him, "Hear now, you Benjamites! כי קשרתם כלכם עלי ואין־גלה את־אזני בכרת־בני עם־בן־ישי ואין־ חלה מכם עלי וגלה את־אזני כי הקים בני את־עבדי עלי לארב כיום הזה׃ |
That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? | that all of you have conspired against me, and there is none who discloses to me when my son makes a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you who is sorry for me, or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?" | That all of you have made designs against me, and not one of you gave me word when my son made an agreement with the son of Jesse, and not one of you has pity for me or has made my eyes open to the fact that my servant has been moved by my son against me, as at this day? | |||

ויען דאג האדמי והוא נצב על־עבדי־שאול ויאמר ראיתי את־בן־ישי בא נבה אל־אחימלך בן־אחטוב׃ |
Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. | Then Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, answered and said, "I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. | Then Doeg, the Edomite, who was by the side of the servants of Saul, in answer said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub. | |||

And he enquired of the LORD for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. | He inquired of Yahweh for him, gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine." | And he got directions from the Lord for him, and gave him food, and put in his hand the sword of Goliath the Philistine. | |||

ויאמר אלו שאול למה קשרתם עלי אתה ובן־ישי בתתך לו לחם וחרב ושאול לו באלהים לקום אלי לארב כיום הזה׃ |
And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? | Saul said to him, "Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?" | And Saul said to him, Why have you made designs against me with the son of Jesse, giving him food and a sword and getting directions from the Lord for him, and helping him to take up arms against me, and to be on the watch to make a secret attack on me as he is doing now? | |||

ויען אחימלך את־המלך ויאמר ומי בכל־עבדיך כדוד נאמן וחתן המלך וסר אל־משמעתך ונכבד בביתך׃ |
Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house? | Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, "Who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and is taken into your council, and is honorable in your house? | Then Ahimelech answering said to the king, Who among all your servants is so true to you as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and is a captain of your armed men, and has a place of honour in your house? | |||

היום החלתי לשאול־לו באלהים חלילה לי אל־ישם המלך בעבדו דבר בכל־בית אבי כי לא־ידע עבדך בכל־זאת דבר קטן או גדול׃ |
Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more. | Have I today begun to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me! Don't let the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for your servant knows nothing of all this, less or more." | Is this the first time I have got directions from God for him? Far be the thought! let the king make no such statement against his servant or my father's family, for your servant has no knowledge, great or small, of this thing. | |||

ויאמר המלך מות תמות אחימלך אתה וכל־בית אביך׃ |
And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house. | The king said, "You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you, and all your father's house." | And the king said, You will certainly be put to death, Ahimelech, you and all your father's family. | |||

ויאמר המלך לרצים הנצבים עליו סבו והמיתו כהני יהוה כי גם־ידם עם־דוד וכי ידעו כי־ברח הוא ולא גלו את־אזנו ולא־אבו עבדי המלך לשלח את־ידם לפגע בכהני יהוה׃ |
And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the LORD: because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the LORD. | The king said to the guard who stood about him, "Turn, and kill the priests of Yahweh; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled, and didn't disclose it to me." But the servants of the king wouldn't put forth their hand to fall on the priests of Yahweh. | Then the king said to the runners who were waiting near him, Put the priests of the Lord to death; because they are on David's side, and having knowledge of his flight, did not give me word of it. But the king's servants would not put out their hands to make an attack on the Lord's priests. | |||

ויאמר המלך לדויג סב אתה ופגע בכהנים ויסב דויג האדמי ויפגע־ הוא בכהנים וימת ביום ההוא שמנים וחמשה איש נשא אפוד בד׃ |
And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. | The king said to Doeg, "Turn and attack the priests!" Doeg the Edomite turned, and he attacked the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five people who wore a linen ephod. | Then the king said to Doeg, You are to put the priests to death. And Doeg the Edomite, turning on the priests and attacking them, put to death that day eighty-five men who took up the ephod. | |||

ואת נב עיר־הכהנים הכה לפי־חרב מאיש ועד־אשה מעולל ועד־יונק ושור וחמור ושה לפי־חרב׃ |
And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword. | He struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and nursing babies, and cattle and donkeys and sheep, with the edge of the sword. | And Nob, the town of the priests, he put to the sword, all the men and women, children and babies at the breast, and oxen and asses and sheep. | |||

וימלט בן־אחד לאחימלך בן־אחטוב ושמו אביתר ויברח אחרי דוד׃ |
And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David. | One of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David. | And Abiathar, one of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, got away and went in flight after David; | |||

ויגד אביתר לדוד כי הרג שאול את כהני יהוה׃ |
And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the LORD's priests. | Abiathar told David that Saul had slain Yahweh's priests. | And gave him the news of how Saul had put to death the Lord's priests. | |||

ויאמר דוד לאביתר ידעתי ביום ההוא כי־שם דויג האדמי כי־הגד יגיד לשאול אנכי סבתי בכל־נפש בית אביך׃ |
And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's house. | David said to Abiathar, "I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of all the persons of your father's house. | And David said to Abiathar, I was certain that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would take the news to Saul: I am responsible for the lives of all your father's family. | |||

שבה אתי אל־תירא כי אשר־יבקש את־נפשי יבקש את־נפשך כי־משמרת אתה עמדי׃ |
Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard. | Stay with me, don't be afraid; for he who seeks my life seeks your life. For with me you shall be in safeguard." | Keep here with me and have no fear; for he who has designs on my life has designs on yours: but with me you will be safe. | |||
