והנער שמואל משרת את־יהוה לפני עלי ודבר־יהוה היה יקר בימים ההם אין חזון נפרץ׃ |
And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. | The child Samuel ministered to Yahweh before Eli. The word of Yahweh was precious in those days; there was no frequent vision. | Now the young Samuel was the servant of the Lord before Eli. ויהי ביום ההוא ועלי שכב במקמו ועינו החלו כהות לא יוכל לראות׃ |
And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; | It happened at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place (now his eyes had begun to grow dim, so that he could not see), | And at that time, when Eli was resting in his place, (now his eyes were becoming clouded so that he was not able to see,) | |||

ונר אלהים טרם יכבה ושמואל שכב בהיכל יהוה אשר־שם ארון אלהים׃ |
And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; | and the lamp of God hadn't yet gone out, and Samuel had laid down [to sleep], in the temple of Yahweh, where the ark of God was; | And the light of God was still burning, while Samuel was sleeping in the Temple of the Lord where the ark of God was, | |||

ויקרא יהוה אל־שמואל ויאמר הנני׃ |
That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. | that Yahweh called Samuel; and he said, "Here I am." | The voice of the Lord said Samuel's name; and he said, Here am I. | |||

וירץ אל־עלי ויאמר הנני כי־קראת לי ויאמר לא־קראתי שוב שכב וילך וישכב׃ |
And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. | He ran to Eli, and said, "Here I am; for you called me." He said, "I didn't call; lie down again." He went and lay down. | And running to Eli he said, Here am I, for you said my name. And Eli said, I did not say your name; go to your rest again. So he went back to his bed. | |||

ויסף יהוה קרא עוד שמואל ויקם שמואל וילך אל־עלי ויאמר הנני כי קראת לי ויאמר לא־קראתי בני שוב שכב׃ |
And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. | Yahweh called yet again, "Samuel!" Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am; for you called me." He answered, "I didn't call, my son; lie down again." | And again the Lord said, Samuel. And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, Here am I; for you certainly said my name. But he said in answer, I said nothing, my son; go to your rest again. | |||

ושמואל טרם ידע את־יהוה וטרם יגלה אליו דבר־יהוה׃ |
Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. | Now Samuel didn't yet know Yahweh, neither was the word of Yahweh yet revealed to him. | Now at that time Samuel had no knowledge of the Lord, and the revelation of the word of the Lord had not come to him. | |||

ויסף יהוה קרא־שמואל בשלשית ויקם וילך אל־עלי ויאמר הנני כי קראת לי ויבן עלי כי יהוה קרא לנער׃ |
And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. | Yahweh called Samuel again the third time. He arose and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am; for you called me." Eli perceived that Yahweh had called the child. | And for the third time the Lord said Samuel's name. And he got up and went to Eli and said, Here am I; for you certainly said my name. Then it was clear to Eli that the voice which had said the child's name was the Lord's. | |||

ויאמר עלי לשמואל לך שכב והיה אם־יקרא אליך ואמרת דבר יהוה כי שמע עבדך וילך שמואל וישכב במקומו׃ |
Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. | Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he calls you, that you shall say, 'Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place. | So Eli said to Samuel, Go back: and if the voice comes again, let your answer be, Say on, Lord; for the ears of your servant are open. ויבא יהוה ויתיצב ויקרא כפעם־בפעם שמואל שמואל ויאמר שמואל דבר כי שמע עבדך׃ |
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. | Yahweh came, and stood, and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Then Samuel said, "Speak; for your servant hears." | Then the Lord came and said as before, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel made answer, Say on, Lord; for the ears of your servant are open. | |||

ויאמר יהוה אל־שמואל הנה אנכי עשה דבר בישראל אשר כל־שמעו תצלינה שתי אזניו׃ |
And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. | Yahweh said to Samuel, "Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of everyone who hears it shall tingle. | And the Lord said to Samuel, See, I will do a thing in Israel at which the ears of everyone hearing of it will be burning. | |||

ביום ההוא אקים אל־עלי את כל־אשר דברתי אל־ביתו החל וכלה׃ |
In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. | In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from the beginning even to the end. | In that day I will do to Eli everything which I have said about his family, from first to last. | |||

והגדתי לו כי־שפט אני את־ביתו עד־עולם בעון אשר־ידע כי־מקללים להם בניו ולא כהה בם׃ |
For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. | For I have told him that I will judge his house forever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons brought a curse on themselves, and he didn't restrain them. | And you are to say to him that I will send punishment on his family for ever, for the sin which he had knowledge of; because his sons have been cursing God and he had no control over them. | |||

ולכן נשבעתי לבית עלי אם־יתכפר עון בית־עלי בזבח ובמנחה עד־ עולם׃ |
And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever. | Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be removed with sacrifice nor offering forever." | So I have made an oath to the family of Eli that no offering of meat or of meal which they may make will ever take away the sin of his family. | |||

וישכב שמואל עד־הבקר ויפתח את־דלתות בית־יהוה ושמואל ירא מהגיד את־המראה אל־עלי׃ |
And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision. | Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of Yahweh. Samuel feared to show Eli the vision. | And Samuel kept where he was, not moving till the time came for opening the doors of the house of God in the morning. ויאמר מה הדבר אשר דבר אליך אל־נא תכחד ממני כה יעשה־לך אלהים וכה יוסיף אם־תכחד ממני דבר מכל־הדבר אשר־דבר אליך׃ |
And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee. | He said, "What is the thing that [Yahweh] has spoken to you? Please don't hide it from me. God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the things that he spoke to you." | And he said, What did the Lord say to you? Do not keep it from me: may God's punishment be on you if you keep from me anything he said to you. | |||

ויגד־לו שמואל את־כל־הדברים ולא כחד ממנו ויאמר יהוה הוא הטוב בעינו יעשה׃ |
And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good. | Samuel told him every bit, and hid nothing from him. He said, "It is Yahweh. Let him do what seems good to him." | Then Samuel gave him an account of everything, keeping nothing back. And he said, It is the Lord; let him do what seems good to him. | |||

ויגדל שמואל ויהוה היה עמו ולא־הפיל מכל־דבריו ארצה׃ |
And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. | Samuel grew, and Yahweh was with him, and let none of his words fall to the ground. | And Samuel became older, and the Lord was with him and let not one of his words be without effect. | |||

וידע כל־ישראל מדן ועד־באר שבע כי נאמן שמואל לנביא ליהוה׃ |
And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD. | All Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of Yahweh. | And it was clear to all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba that Samuel had been made a prophet of the Lord. | |||

ויסף יהוה להראה בשלה כי־נגלה יהוה אל־שמואל בשלו בדבר יהוה׃ |
And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD. | Yahweh appeared again in Shiloh; for Yahweh revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of Yahweh. | And the Lord was seen again in Shiloh; for the Lord gave to Samuel in Shiloh the revelation of his word. | |||
