2.    Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate. It was so, that when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called to him, and said, "What city are you from?" He said, "Your servant is of one of the tribes of Israel."     And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.     והשכים  אבשלום

    VHShKYM 'aBShLVM V'yMD 'yL-YD DUrK HSh'yUr VYHY KL-H'aYSh 'aShUr-YHYH-LV- UrYB LBV'a 'aL-HMLK LMShPhT VYQUr'a 'aBShLVM 'aLYV VY'aMUr 'aY-MZH 'yYUr 'aThH VY'aMUr M'aChD ShBTY-YShUr'aL 'yBDK.     and Absalom hath risen early, and stood by the side of the way of the gate, and it cometh to pass, every man who hath a pleading to come unto the king for judgment, that Absalom calleth unto him, and saith, `Of what city art thou?` and he saith, `Of one of the tribes of Israel is thy servant.`     et mane consurgens Absalom stabat iuxta introitum portae et omnem virum qui habebat negotium ut veniret ad regis iudicium vocabat Absalom ad se et dicebat de qua civitate es tu qui respondens aiebat ex una tribu Israhel ego sum servus tuus
 
3.    Absalom said to him, "Behold, your matters are good and right; but there is no man deputized by the king to hear you."     And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.     ויאמר  אליו  אבשלום 
ראה  דברך  טובים
ונכחים  ושמע
אין־לך  מאת  המלך׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV 'aBShLVM Ur'aH DBUrK TVBYM VNKChYM VShM'y 'aYN-LK M'aTh HMLK.     And Absalom saith unto him, `See, thy matters are good and straightforward -- and there is none hearkening to thee from the king.`     respondebatque ei Absalom videntur mihi sermones tui boni et iusti sed non est qui te audiat constitutus a rege dicebatque Absalom
 
4.    Absalom said moreover, "Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who has any suit or cause might come to me, and I would do him justice!"     Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!     ויאמר  אבשלום 
מי־ישמני  שפט  בארץ
ועלי  יבוא  כל־איש
אשר־יהיה־לו־  ריב
ומשפט  והצדקתיו׃
    VY'aMUr 'aBShLVM MY-YShMNY ShPhT B'aUrTSh V'yLY YBV'a KL-'aYSh 'aShUr-YHYH-LV- UrYB VMShPhT VHTShDQThYV.     And Absalom saith, `Who doth make me a judge in the land, that unto me doth come every man who hath a plea and judgment? -- then I have declared him righteous.`     quis me constituat iudicem super terram ut ad me veniant omnes qui habent negotium et iuste iudicem
 
5.    It was so, that when any man came near to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him.     And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.     והיה  בקרב־איש 
להשתחות  לו  ושלח
את־ידו  והחזיק  לו
ונשק  לו׃
    VHYH BQUrB-'aYSh LHShThChVTh LV VShLCh 'aTh-YDV VHChZYQ LV VNShQ LV.     And it hath come to pass, in the drawing nearing of any one to bow himself to him, that he hath put forth his hand, and laid hold on him, and given a kiss to him;     sed et cum accederet ad eum homo ut salutaret illum extendebat manum suam et adprehendens osculabatur eum
 
6.    In this manner Absalom did to all Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.     And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.     ויעש  אבשלום  כדבר

ישראל׃
    VY'ySh 'aBShLVM KDBUr HZH LKL-YShUr'aL 'aShUr-YB'aV LMShPhT 'aL-HMLK VYGNB 'aBShLVM 'aTh-LB 'aNShY YShUr'aL.     and Absalom doth according to this thing to all Israel who come in for judgment unto the king, and Absalom stealeth the heart of the men of Israel.     faciebatque hoc omni Israhel qui veniebat ad iudicium ut audiretur a rege et sollicitabat corda virorum Israhel
 
7.    It happened at the end of forty years, that Absalom said to the king, "Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to Yahweh, in Hebron.     And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the LORD, in Hebron.     ויהי  מקץ  ארבעים 
שנה  ויאמר  אבשלום
אל־המלך  אלכה  נא
ואשלם  את־  נדרי
אשר־נדרתי  ליהוה
בחברון׃
    VYHY MQTSh 'aUrB'yYM ShNH VY'aMUr 'aBShLVM 'aL-HMLK 'aLKH N'a V'aShLM 'aTh- NDUrY 'aShUr-NDUrThY LYHVH BChBUrVN.     And it cometh to pass, at the end of forty years, that Absalom saith unto the king, `Let me go, I pray thee, and I complete my vow, that I vowed to Jehovah in Hebron,     post quattuor autem annos dixit Absalom ad regem vadam et reddam vota mea quae vovi Domino in Hebron
 
8.    For your servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, 'If Yahweh shall indeed bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve Yahweh.'"     For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD.     כי־נדר  נדר  עבדך

    KY-NDUr NDUr 'yBDK BShBThY BGShVUr B'aUrM L'aMUr 'aM-YShYB YShYBNY YHVH YUrVShLM V'yBDThY 'aTh-YHVH.     for a vow hath thy servant vowed in my dwelling in Geshur, in Aram, saying, If Jehovah doth certainly bring me back to Jerusalem, then I have served Jehovah.`     vovens enim vovit servus tuus cum esset in Gessur Syriae dicens si reduxerit me Dominus in Hierusalem sacrificabo Domino
 
9.    The king said to him, "Go in peace." So he arose, and went to Hebron.     And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.     ויאמר־לו  המלך  לך 
בשלום  ויקם  וילך
חברונה׃
    VY'aMUr-LV HMLK LK BShLVM VYQM VYLK ChBUrVNH.     And the king saith to him, `Go in peace;` and he riseth and goeth to Hebron,     dixitque ei rex vade in pace et surrexit et abiit in Hebron
 
10.    But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, "As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, 'Absalom is king in Hebron!'"     But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron.     וישלח  אבשלום

11.    Two hundred men went with Absalom out of Jerusalem, who were invited, and went in their simplicity; and they didn't know anything.     And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing.     ואת־אבשלום  הלכו

12.    Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counselor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. The conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.     And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices.     VYShLCh 'aBShLVM 'aTh-'aChYThPhL HGYLNY YV'yTSh DVD M'yYUrV MGLH BZBChV 'aTh- HZBChYM VYHY HQShUr 'aMTSh VH'yM HVLK VUrB 'aTh-'aBShLVM.     and Absalom sendeth Ahithophel the Gilonite, a counsellor of David, out of his city, out of Gilo, in his sacrificing sacrifices; and the conspiracy is strong, and the people are going and increasing with Absalom.     accersivit quoque Absalom Ahitofel Gilonitem consiliarium David de civitate sua Gilo cum immolaret victimas et facta est coniuratio valida populusque concurrens augebatur cum Absalom
 
13.    A messenger came to David, saying, "The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom."     And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.     ויבא  המגיד  אל־דוד 
לאמר  היה  לב־איש

    VYB'a HMGYD 'aL-DVD L'aMUr HYH LB-'aYSh YShUr'aL 'aChUrY 'aBShLVM.     And he who is declaring tidings cometh in unto David, saying, `The heart of the men of Israel hath been after Absalom.`     venit igitur nuntius ad David dicens toto corde universus Israhel sequitur Absalom
 
14.    David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, "Arise, and let us flee; for else none of us shall escape from Absalom. Make speed to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring down evil on us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword."     And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.     ויאמר  דוד 
לכל־עבדיו  אשר־אתו
בירושלם  קומו
ונברחה  כי
לא־תהיה־  לנו
פליטה  מפני  אבשלום
מהרו  ללכת  פן־ימהר
והשגנו  והדיח
עלינו  את־  הרעה
והכה  העיר
לפי־חרב׃
    VY'aMUr DVD LKL-'yBDYV 'aShUr-'aThV BYUrVShLM QVMV VNBUrChH KY L'a-ThHYH- LNV PhLYTH MPhNY 'aBShLVM MHUrV LLKTh PhN-YMHUr VHShGNV VHDYCh 'yLYNV 'aTh- HUr'yH VHKH H'yYUr LPhY-ChUrB.     And David saith to all his servants who are with him in Jerusalem, `Rise, and we flee, for we have no escape from the face of Absalom; haste to go, lest he hasten, and have overtaken us, and forced on us evil, and smitten the city by the mouth of the sword.`     et ait David servis suis qui erant cum eo in Hierusalem surgite fugiamus neque enim erit nobis effugium a facie Absalom festinate egredi ne forte veniens occupet nos et inpellat super nos ruinam et percutiat civitatem in ore gladii
 
15.    The king's servants said to the king, "Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king chooses."     And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.     ויאמרו  עבדי־המלך 
אל־המלך  ככל
אשר־יבחר  אדני
המלך  הנה  עבדיך׃
    VY'aMUrV 'yBDY-HMLK 'aL-HMLK KKL 'aShUr-YBChUr 'aDNY HMLK HNH 'yBDYK.     And the servants of the king say unto the king, `According to all that my lord the king chooseth -- lo, thy servants do.`     dixeruntque servi regis ad eum omnia quaecumque praeceperit dominus noster rex libenter exsequimur servi tui

    VYTSh'a HMLK VKL-BYThV BUrGLYV VY'yZB HMLK 'aTh 'yShUr NShYM PhLGShYM LShMUr HBYTh.     And the king goeth out, and all his household at his feet, and the king leaveth ten women -- concubines -- to keep the house.     egressus est ergo rex et universa domus eius pedibus suis et dereliquit rex decem mulieres concubinas ad custodiendam domum
 
17.    The king went forth, and all the people after him; and they stayed in Beth Merhak.     And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off.     ויצא  המלך  וכל־העם

18.    All his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men who came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.     And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.     וכל־עבדיו  עברים

19.    Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, "Why do you also go with us? Return, and stay with the king; for you are a foreigner, and also an exile. Return to your own place.     Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.     ויאמר  המלך  אל־אתי 
הגתי  למה  תלך
גם־אתה  אתנו  שוב
ושב  עם־המלך
כי־נכרי  אתה
וגם־גלה  אתה
למקומך׃
    VY'aMUr HMLK 'aL-'aThY HGThY LMH ThLK GM-'aThH 'aThNV ShVB VShB 'yM-HMLK KY-NKUrY 'aThH VGM-GLH 'aThH LMQVMK.     And the king saith unto Ittai the Gittite, `Why dost thou go -- thou also -- with us? turn back -- and abide with the king, for thou art a stranger, and also an exile thou -- to thy place.     dixit autem rex ad Ethai Gettheum cur venis nobiscum revertere et habita cum rege quia peregrinus es et egressus de loco tuo
 
20.    Whereas you came but yesterday, should I this day make you go up and down with us, seeing I go where I may? Return, and take back your brothers. Mercy and truth be with you."     Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.     תמול  בואך  והיום

21.    Ittai answered the king, and said, "As Yahweh lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king shall is, whether for death or for life, even there also will your servant be."     And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.     ויען  אתי  את־המלך 
ויאמר  חי־יהוה  וחי
אדני  המלך  כי
אם־במקום  אשר
יהיה־שם  אדני  המלך
אם־למות  אם־לחיים
כי־שם  יהיה  עבדך׃
    VY'yN 'aThY 'aTh-HMLK VY'aMUr ChY-YHVH VChY 'aDNY HMLK KY 'aM-BMQVM 'aShUr YHYH-ShM 'aDNY HMLK 'aM-LMVTh 'aM-LChYYM KY-ShM YHYH 'yBDK.     And Ittai answereth the king and saith, `Jehovah liveth, and my lord the king liveth, surely in the place where my lord the king is -- if for death, if for life, surely there is thy servant.`     et respondit Ethai regi dicens vivit Dominus et vivit dominus meus rex quoniam in quocumque loco fueris domine mi rex sive in morte sive in vita ibi erit servus tuus
 
22.    David said to Ittai, "Go and pass over." Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones who were with him.     And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.     ויאמר  דוד  אל־אתי 
לך  ועבר  ויעבר  אתי
הגתי  וכל־אנשיו
וכל־הטף  אשר  אתו׃
    VY'aMUr DVD 'aL-'aThY LK V'yBUr VY'yBUr 'aThY HGThY VKL-'aNShYV VKL-HTPh 'aShUr 'aThV.     And David saith unto Ittai, `Go and pass over;` and Ittai the Gittite passeth over, and all his men, and all the infants who are with him.     et ait David Ethai veni et transi et transivit Ethai Gettheus et omnes viri qui cum eo erant et reliqua multitudo

24.    Behold, Zadok also came, and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God; and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people finished passing out of the city.     And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.     והנה  גם־צדוק 
וכל־הלוים  אתו
נשאים  את־ארון
ברית  האלהים  ויצקו
את־ארון  האלהים
ויעל  אביתר  עד־תם

25.    The king said to Zadok, "Carry back the ark of God into the city. If I find favor in the eyes of Yahweh, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and his habitation;     And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:     ויאמר  המלך  לצדוק 
השב  את־ארון
האלהים  העיר
אם־אמצא  חן  בעיני
יהוה  והשבני
והראני  אתו
ואת־נוהו׃
    VY'aMUr HMLK LTShDVQ HShB 'aTh-'aUrVN H'aLHYM H'yYUr 'aM-'aMTSh'a ChN B'yYNY YHVH VHShBNY VHUr'aNY 'aThV V'aTh-NVHV.     And the king saith to Zadok, `Take back the ark of God to the city; if I find grace in the eyes of Jehovah, then He hath brought me back, and shewn me it and His habitation;     et dixit rex ad Sadoc reporta arcam Dei in urbem si invenero gratiam in oculis Domini reducet me et ostendet mihi eam et tabernaculum suum
 
26.    but if he say thus, 'I have no delight in you;' behold, here am I. Let him do to me as seems good to him."     But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.     ואם  כה  יאמר  לא 
חפצתי  בך  הנני
יעשה־לי  כאשר  טוב
בעיניו׃

27.    The king said also to Zadok the priest, "Aren't you a seer? Return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.     The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.     ויאמר  המלך

    VY'aMUr HMLK 'aL-TShDVQ HKHN HUrV'aH 'aThH ShBH H'yYUr BShLVM V'aChYM'yTSh BNK VYHVNThN BN-'aBYThUr ShNY BNYKM 'aThKM.     And the king saith unto Zadok the priest, `Art thou a seer? turn back to the city in peace, and Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan son of Abiathar, your two sons with you;     et dixit rex ad Sadoc sacerdotem o videns revertere in civitatem in pace et Achimaas filius tuus et Ionathan filius Abiathar duo filii vestri sint vobiscum
 
28.    Behold, I will stay at the fords of the wilderness, until word comes from you to inform me."     See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.     ראו  אנכי  מתמהמה

30.    David went up by the ascent of the [Mount of] Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered, and went barefoot: and all the people who were with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.     And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.     ודוד  עלה  במעלה

31.    Someone told David, saying, "Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom." David said, "Yahweh, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness."     And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.     ודוד  הגיד  לאמר

32.    It happened that when David had come to the top [of the ascent], where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat torn, and earth on his head.     And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:     ויהי  דוד  בא

לאלהים  והנה
לקראתו  חושי  הארכי
קרוע  כתנתו  ואדמה
על־ראשו׃
    VYHY DVD B'a 'yD-HUr'aSh 'aShUr-YShThChVH ShM L'aLHYM VHNH LQUr'aThV ChVShY H'aUrKY QUrV'y KThNThV V'aDMH 'yL-Ur'aShV.     And it cometh to pass, David hath come unto the top, where he boweth himself to God, and lo, to meet him is Hushai the Archite, his coat rent, and earth on his head;     cumque ascenderet David summitatem montis in quo adoraturus erat Dominum ecce occurrit ei Husai Arachites scissa veste et terra pleno capite
 
33.    David said to him, "If you pass on with me, then you will be a burden to me;     Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:     ויאמר  לו  דוד  אם 
עברת  אתי  והית  עלי
למשא׃
    VY'aMUr LV DVD 'aM 'yBUrTh 'aThY VHYTh 'yLY LMSh'a.     and David saith to him, `If thou hast passed on with me then thou hast been on me for a burden,     et dixit ei David si veneris mecum eris mihi oneri
 
34.    but if you return to the city, and tell Absalom, 'I will be your servant, O king. As I have been your father's servant in time past, so will I now be your servant; then will you defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.'     But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.     ואם־העיר  תשוב 
ואמרת  לאבשלום
עבדך  אני  המלך
אהיה  עבד  אביך
ואני  מאז  ועתה
ואני  עבדך  והפרתה
לי  את  עצת  אחיתפל׃
    V'aM-H'yYUr ThShVB V'aMUrTh L'aBShLVM 'yBDK 'aNY HMLK 'aHYH 'yBD 'aBYK V'aNY M'aZ V'yThH V'aNY 'yBDK VHPhUrThH LY 'aTh 'yTShTh 'aChYThPhL.     and if to the city thou dost turn back, and hast said to Absalom, Thy servant I am, O king; servant of thy father I am also hitherto, and now, I am also thy servant; then thou hast made void for me the counsel of Ahithophel;     si autem in civitatem revertaris et dixeris Absalom servus tuus sum rex sicut fui servus patris tui sic ero servus tuus dissipabis consilium Ahitofel
 
35.    Don't you have Zadok and Abiathar the priests there with you? Therefore it shall be, that whatever thing you shall hear out of the king's house, you shall tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.     And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.     והלוא  עמך  שם  צדוק 
ואביתר  הכהנים
והיה  כל־הדבר  אשר
תשמע  מבית  המלך
תגיד  לצדוק
ולאביתר  הכהנים׃
    VHLV'a 'yMK ShM TShDVQ V'aBYThUr HKHNYM VHYH KL-HDBUr 'aShUr ThShM'y MBYTh HMLK ThGYD LTShDVQ VL'aBYThUr HKHNYM.     and are there not with thee there Zadok and Abiathar the priests? and it hath been, the whole of the matter that thou hearest from the house of the king thou dost declare to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests.     habes autem tecum Sadoc et Abiathar sacerdotes et omne verbum quodcumque audieris de domo regis indicabis Sadoc et Abiathar sacerdotibus
 
36.    Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok's son, and Jonathan, Abiathar's son; and by them you shall send to me everything that you shall hear."     Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok's son, and Jonathan Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear.     הנה־שם  עמם  שני

37.    So Hushai, David's friend, came into the city; and Absalom came into Jerusalem.     So Hushai David's friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.     ויבא  חושי  רעה  דוד

    VYB'a ChVShY Ur'yH DVD H'yYUr V'aBShLM YB'a YUrVShLM.     And Hushai, David`s friend, cometh in to the city, and Absalom cometh in to Jerusalem.     veniente ergo Husai amico David in civitatem Absalom quoque ingressus est Hierusalem
