1.    Ben Hadad the king of Syria gathered all his army together; and there were thirty-two kings with him, and horses and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.     And Benhadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots; and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it.     ובן־הדד  מלך־ארם

    VBN-HDD MLK-'aUrM QBTSh 'aTh-KL-ChYLV VShLShYM VShNYM MLK 'aThV VSVS VUrKB VY'yL VYTShUr 'yL-ShMUrVN VYLChM BH.     And Ben-Hadad king of Aram hath gathered all his force, and thirty and two kings are with him, and horse and chariot, and he goeth up and layeth siege against Samaria, and fighteth with it,     porro Benadad rex Syriae congregavit omnem exercitum suum et triginta et duos reges secum et equos et currus et ascendens pugnabat contra Samariam et obsidebat eam
 
2.    He sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel, into the city, and said to him, "Thus says Ben Hadad,     And he sent messengers to Ahab king of Israel into the city, and said unto him, Thus saith Benhadad,     וישלח  מלאכים 
אל־אחאב  מלך־ישראל
העירה׃
    VYShLCh ML'aKYM 'aL-'aCh'aB MLK-YShUr'aL H'yYUrH.     and sendeth messengers unto Ahab king of Israel, to the city,     mittensque nuntios ad Ahab regem Israhel in civitatem
 
3.    'Your silver and your gold is mine. Your wives also and your children, even the best, are mine.'"     Thy silver and thy gold is mine; thy wives also and thy children, even the goodliest, are mine.     ויאמר  לו  כה  אמר 
בן־הדד  כספך  וזהבך
לי־הוא  ונשיך
ובניך  הטובים
לי־הם׃
    VY'aMUr LV KH 'aMUr BN-HDD KSPhK VZHBK LY-HV'a VNShYK VBNYK HTVBYM LY-HM.     and saith to him, `Thus said Ben-Hadad, `Thy silver and thy gold are mine, and thy wives and thy sons -- the best -- are mine.`     ait haec dicit Benadad argentum tuum et aurum tuum meum est et uxores tuae et filii tui optimi mei sunt
 
4.    The king of Israel answered, "It is according to your saying, my lord, O king. I am yours, and all that I have."     And the king of Israel answered and said, My lord, O king, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I have.     ויען  מלך־ישראל 
ויאמר  כדברך  אדני
המלך  לך  אני
וכל־אשר־לי׃
    VY'yN MLK-YShUr'aL VY'aMUr KDBUrK 'aDNY HMLK LK 'aNY VKL-'aShUr-LY.     And the king of Israel answereth and saith, `According to thy word, my lord, O king: I am thine, and all that I have.`     responditque rex Israhel iuxta verbum tuum domine mi rex tuus sum ego et omnia mea
 
5.    The messengers came again, and said, "Ben Hadad says, 'I sent indeed to you, saying, "You shall deliver me your silver, and your gold, and your wives, and your children;     And the messengers came again, and said, Thus speaketh Benhadad, saying, Although I have sent unto thee, saying, Thou shalt deliver me thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;     וישבו  המלאכים 
ויאמרו  כה־אמר
בן־הדד  לאמר
כי־שלחתי  אליך
לאמר  כספך  וזהבך
ונשיך  ובניך  לי
תתן׃
    VYShBV HML'aKYM VY'aMUrV KH-'aMUr BN-HDD L'aMUr KY-ShLChThY 'aLYK L'aMUr KSPhK VZHBK VNShYK VBNYK LY ThThN.     And the messengers turn back and say, `Thus spake Ben-Hadad, saying, Surely I sent unto thee, saying, Thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy sons, to me thou dost give;     revertentesque nuntii dixerunt haec dicit Benadad qui misit nos ad te argentum tuum et aurum tuum et uxores tuas et filios tuos dabis mihi
 
6.    but I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, and they shall search your house, and the houses of your servants; and it shall be, that whatever is pleasant in your eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away."'"     Yet I will send my servants unto thee to morrow about this time, and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy servants; and it shall be, that whatsoever is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.     כי  אם־כעת  מחר 
אשלח  את־עבדי  אליך
וחפשו  את־ביתך  ואת
בתי  עבדיך  והיה
כל־מחמד  עיניך
ישימו  בידם  ולקחו׃
    KY 'aM-K'yTh MChUr 'aShLCh 'aTh-'yBDY 'aLYK VChPhShV 'aTh-BYThK V'aTh BThY 'yBDYK VHYH KL-MChMD 'yYNYK YShYMV BYDM VLQChV.     for if, at this time to-morrow, I send my servants unto thee then they have searched thy house, and the houses of thy servants, and it hath been, every desirable thing of thine eyes they place in their hand, and have taken away.`     cras igitur hac eadem hora mittam servos meos ad te et scrutabuntur domum tuam et domum servorum tuorum et omne quod eis placuerit ponent in manibus suis et auferent
 
7.    Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, "Please notice how this man seeks mischief; for he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I didn't deny him."     Then the king of Israel called all the elders of the land, and said, Mark, I pray you, and see how this man seeketh mischief: for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold; and I denied him not.     ויקרא  מלך־ישראל 
לכל־זקני  הארץ
ויאמר  דעו־נא  וראו
כי  רעה  זה  מבקש
כי־שלח  אלי  לנשי
ולבני  ולכספי
ולזהבי  ולא  מנעתי
ממנו׃
    VYQUr'a MLK-YShUr'aL LKL-ZQNY H'aUrTSh VY'aMUr D'yV-N'a VUr'aV KY Ur'yH ZH MBQSh KY-ShLCh 'aLY LNShY VLBNY VLKSPhY VLZHBY VL'a MN'yThY MMNV.     And the king of Israel calleth to all the elders of the land, and saith, `Know, I pray you, and see that evil this one is seeking, for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my sons, and for my silver, and for my gold, and I withheld not from him.`     vocavit autem rex Israhel omnes seniores terrae et ait animadvertite et videte quoniam insidietur nobis misit enim ad me pro uxoribus meis et filiis et pro argento et auro et non abnui
 
8.    All the elders and all the people said to him, "Don't listen, neither consent."     And all the elders and all the people said unto him, Hearken not unto him, nor consent.     ויאמרו  אליו 
כל־הזקנים  וכל־העם
אל־תשמע  ולוא
תאבה׃
    VY'aMUrV 'aLYV KL-HZQNYM VKL-H'yM 'aL-ThShM'y VLV'a Th'aBH.     And all the elders and all the people say unto him, `Do not hearken, nor consent.`     dixeruntque omnes maiores natu et universus populus ad eum non audias neque adquiescas illi
 
9.    Therefore he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, "Tell my lord the king, 'All that you sent for to your servant at the first I will do; but this thing I cannot do.'" The messengers departed, and brought him back the message.     Wherefore he said unto the messengers of Benhadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst send for to thy servant at the first I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him word again.     ויאמר  למלאכי 
בן־הדד  אמרו  לאדני
המלך  כל  אשר־שלחת
אל־עבדך  בראשנה
אעשה  והדבר  הזה  לא
אוכל  לעשות  וילכו
המלאכים  וישבהו
דבר׃
    VY'aMUr LML'aKY BN-HDD 'aMUrV L'aDNY HMLK KL 'aShUr-ShLChTh 'aL-'yBDK BUr'aShNH 'a'yShH VHDBUr HZH L'a 'aVKL L'yShVTh VYLKV HML'aKYM VYShBHV DBUr.     And he saith to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, `Say to my lord the king, All that thou didst send for unto thy servant at the first I do, and this thing I am not able to do;` and the messengers go and take him back word.     respondit itaque nuntiis Benadad dicite domino meo regi omnia propter quae misisti ad me servum tuum initio faciam hanc autem rem facere non possum
 
10.    Ben Hadad sent to him, and said, "The gods do so to me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people who follow me."     And Benhadad sent unto him, and said, The gods do so unto me, and more also, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me.     וישלח  אליו  בן־הדד 
ויאמר  כה־יעשון  לי
אלהים  וכה  יוספו
אם־ישפק  עפר  שמרון
לשעלים  לכל־העם
אשר  ברגלי׃
    VYShLCh 'aLYV BN-HDD VY'aMUr KH-Y'yShVN LY 'aLHYM VKH YVSPhV 'aM-YShPhQ 'yPhUr ShMUrVN LSh'yLYM LKL-H'yM 'aShUr BUrGLY.     And Ben-Hadad sendeth unto him, and saith, `Thus do the gods to me, and thus do they add, if the dust of Samaria suffice for handfuls for all the people who are at my feet.`     reversique nuntii rettulerunt ei qui remisit et ait haec faciant mihi dii et haec addant si suffecerit pulvis Samariae pugillis omnis populi qui sequitur me
 
11.    The king of Israel answered, "Tell him, 'Don't let him who puts on his armor brag like he who takes it off.'"     And the king of Israel answered and said, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth on his harness boast himself as he that putteth it off.     ויען  מלך־ישראל 
ויאמר  דברו
אל־יתהלל  חגר
כמפתח׃
    VY'yN MLK-YShUr'aL VY'aMUr DBUrV 'aL-YThHLL ChGUr KMPhThCh.     And the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Speak ye: let not him who is girding on boast himself as him who is loosing his armour.`     et respondens rex Israhel ait dicite ei ne glorietur accinctus aeque ut discinctus
 
12.    It happened, when Ben Hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings, in the pavilions, that he said to his servants, "Prepare to attack!" They prepared to attack the city.     And it came to pass, when Ben-hadad heard this message, as he was drinking, he and the kings in the pavilions, that he said unto his servants, Set yourselves in array. And they set themselves in array against the city.     ויהי  כשמע  את־הדבר 
הזה  והוא  שתה  הוא
והמלכים  בסכות
ויאמר  אל־  עבדיו
שימו  וישימו
על־העיר׃
    VYHY KShM'y 'aTh-HDBUr HZH VHV'a ShThH HV'a VHMLKYM BSKVTh VY'aMUr 'aL- 'yBDYV ShYMV VYShYMV 'yL-H'yYUr.     And it cometh to pass at the hearing of this word -- and he is drinking, he and the kings, in the booths -- that he saith unto his servants, `Set yourselves;` and they set themselves against the city.     factum est autem cum audisset verbum istud bibebat ipse et reges in umbraculis et ait servis suis circumdate civitatem et circumdederunt eam
 
13.    Behold, a prophet came near to Ahab king of Israel, and said, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Have you seen all this great multitude? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand this day; and you shall know that I am Yahweh.'"     And, behold, there came a prophet unto Ahab king of Israel, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.     והנה  נביא  אחד  נגש 
אל־אחאב  מלך־ישראל
ויאמר  כה  אמר  יהוה
הראית  את  כל־ההמון
הגדול  הזה  הנני
נתנו  בידך  היום
וידעת  כי־אני
יהוה׃
    VHNH NBY'a 'aChD NGSh 'aL-'aCh'aB MLK-YShUr'aL VY'aMUr KH 'aMUr YHVH HUr'aYTh 'aTh KL-HHMVN HGDVL HZH HNNY NThNV BYDK HYVM VYD'yTh KY-'aNY YHVH.     And lo, a certain prophet hath come nigh unto Ahab king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, `Hast thou seen all this great multitude? lo, I am giving it into thy hand to-day, and thou hast known that I am Jehovah.`     et ecce propheta unus accedens ad Ahab regem Israhel ait haec dicit Dominus certe vidisti omnem multitudinem hanc nimiam ecce ego tradam eam in manu tua hodie ut scias quia ego sum Dominus
 
14.    Ahab said, "By whom?" He said, "Thus says Yahweh, 'By the young men of the princes of the provinces.'" Then he said, "Who shall begin the battle?" He answered, "You."     And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Even by the young men of the princes of the provinces. Then he said, Who shall order the battle? And he answered, Thou.     ויאמר  אחאב  במי 
ויאמר  כה־אמר  יהוה
בנערי  שרי  המדינות
ויאמר  מי־  יאסר
המלחמה  ויאמר  אתה׃
    VY'aMUr 'aCh'aB BMY VY'aMUr KH-'aMUr YHVH BN'yUrY ShUrY HMDYNVTh VY'aMUr MY- Y'aSUr HMLChMH VY'aMUr 'aThH.     And Ahab saith, `By whom?` and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, By the young men of the heads of the provinces;` and he saith, `Who doth direct the battle?` and he saith, `Thou.`     et ait Ahab per quem dixitque ei haec dicit Dominus per pedisequos principum provinciarum et ait quis incipiet proeliari et ille dixit tu
 
15.    Then he mustered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty-two. After them, he mustered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.     Then he numbered the young men of the princes of the provinces, and they were two hundred and thirty two: and after them he numbered all the people, even all the children of Israel, being seven thousand.     ויפקד  את־נערי  שרי 
המדינות  ויהיו
מאתים  שנים  ושלשים
ואחריהם  פקד
את־כל־העם  כל־בני
ישראל  שבעת  אלפים׃
    VYPhQD 'aTh-N'yUrY ShUrY HMDYNVTh VYHYV M'aThYM ShNYM VShLShYM V'aChUrYHM PhQD 'aTh-KL-H'yM KL-BNY YShUr'aL ShB'yTh 'aLPhYM.     And he inspecteth the young men of the heads of the provinces, and they are two hundred, two and thirty, and after them he hath inspecteth the whole of the people, all the sons of Israel, seven thousand,     recensuit ergo pueros principum provinciarum et repperit numerum ducentorum triginta duum et post eos recensuit populum omnes filios Israhel septem milia
 
16.    They went out at noon. But Ben Hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings who helped him.     And they went out at noon. But Benhadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him.     ויצאו  בצהרים

17.    The young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben Hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, "Men are coming out from Samaria."     And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Benhadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.     ויצאו  נערי  שרי

    VYTSh'aV N'yUrY ShUrY HMDYNVTh BUr'aShNH VYShLCh BN-HDD VYGYDV LV L'aMUr 'aNShYM YTSh'aV MShMUrVN.     And the young men of the heads of the provinces go out at the first, and Ben-Hadad sendeth, and they declare to him, saying, `Men have come out of Samaria.`     egressi sunt autem pueri principum provinciarum in prima fronte misit itaque Benadad qui nuntiaverunt ei dicentes viri egressi sunt de Samaria
 
18.    He said, "If they have come out for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, taken them alive."     And he said, Whether they be come out for peace, take them alive; or whether they be come out for war, take them alive.     ויאמר  אם־לשלום 
יצאו  תפשום  חיים
ואם  למלחמה  יצאו
חיים  תפשום׃
    VY'aMUr 'aM-LShLVM YTSh'aV ThPhShVM ChYYM V'aM LMLChMH YTSh'aV ChYYM ThPhShVM.     And he saith, `If for peace they have come out -- catch them alive; and if for battle they have come out -- alive catch them.`     at ille sive ait pro pace veniunt adprehendite eos vivos sive ut proelientur vivos eos capite
 
19.    So these went out of the city, the young men of the princes of the provinces, and the army which followed them.     So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them.     ואלה  יצאו  מן־העיר 
נערי  שרי  המדינות
והחיל  אשר  אחריהם׃
    V'aLH YTSh'aV MN-H'yYUr N'yUrY ShUrY HMDYNVTh VHChYL 'aShUr 'aChUrYHM.     And these have gone out of the city -- the young men of the heads of the provinces -- and the force that is after them,     egressi sunt ergo pueri principum provinciarum ac reliquus exercitus sequebatur
 
20.    They each killed his man. The Syrians fled, and Israel pursued them. Ben Hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with horsemen.     And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Benhadad the king of Syria escaped on an horse with the horsemen.     ויכו  איש  אישו 
וינסו  ארם  וירדפם
ישראל  וימלט
בן־הדד  מלך  ארם
על־  סוס  ופרשים׃
    VYKV 'aYSh 'aYShV VYNSV 'aUrM VYUrDPhM YShUr'aL VYMLT BN-HDD MLK 'aUrM 'yL- SVS VPhUrShYM.     and smite each his man, and Aram fleeth, and Israel pursueth them, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram escapeth on a horse, and the horsemen;     et percussit unusquisque virum qui contra se venerat fugeruntque Syri et persecutus est eos Israhel fugit quoque Benadad rex Syriae in equo cum equitibus
 
21.    The king of Israel went out, and struck the horses and chariots, and killed the Syrians with a great slaughter.     And the king of Israel went out, and smote the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter.     ויצא  מלך  ישראל

ואת־הרכב  והכה
בארם  מכה  גדולה׃
    VYTSh'a MLK YShUr'aL VYK 'aTh-HSVS V'aTh-HUrKB VHKH B'aUrM MKH GDVLH.     and the king of Israel goeth out, and smiteth the horses, and the charioteers, and hath smitten among the Aramaeans a great smiting.     necnon et egressus rex Israhel percussit equos et currus et percussit Syriam plaga magna
 
22.    The prophet came near to the king of Israel, and said to him, "Go, strengthen yourself, and mark, and see what you do; for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against you."     And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen thyself, and mark, and see what thou doest: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.     ויגש  הנביא  אל־מלך 
ישראל  ויאמר  לו  לך
התחזק  ודע  וראה  את
אשר־  תעשה  כי
לתשובת  השנה  מלך
ארם  עלה  עליך׃
    VYGSh HNBY'a 'aL-MLK YShUr'aL VY'aMUr LV LK HThChZQ VD'y VUr'aH 'aTh 'aShUr- Th'yShH KY LThShVBTh HShNH MLK 'aUrM 'yLH 'yLYK.     And the prophet cometh nigh unto the king of Israel, and saith to him, `Go, strengthen thyself, and know and see that which thou dost, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram is coming up against thee.`     accedens autem propheta ad regem Israhel dixit ei vade et confortare et scito et vide quid facias sequenti enim anno rex Syriae ascendet contra te
 
23.    The servants of the king of Syria said to him, "Their god is a god of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we. But let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.     And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.     ועבדי  מלך־ארם 
אמרו  אליו  אלהי
הרים  אלהיהם  על־כן
חזקו  ממנו  ואולם
נלחם  אתם  במישור
אם־לא  נחזק  מהם׃
    V'yBDY MLK-'aUrM 'aMUrV 'aLYV 'aLHY HUrYM 'aLHYHM 'yL-KN ChZQV MMNV V'aVLM NLChM 'aThM BMYShVUr 'aM-L'a NChZQ MHM.     And the servants of the king of Aram said unto him, `Gods of hills are their gods, therefore they were stronger than we; and yet, we fight with them in the plain -- are we not stronger than they?     servi vero regis Syriae dixerunt ei dii montium sunt dii eorum ideo superaverunt nos sed melius est ut pugnemus contra eos in campestribus et obtinebimus eos
 
24.    Do this thing: take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their place.     And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:     ואת־הדבר  הזה  עשה

    V'aTh-HDBUr HZH 'yShH HSUr HMLKYM 'aYSh MMQMV VShYM PhChVTh ThChThYHM.     `And this thing do thou: turn aside the kings each out of his place, and set captains in their stead;     tu ergo verbum hoc fac amove reges singulos ab exercitu suo et pone principes pro eis
 
25.    Muster an army, like the army that you have lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot. We will fight against them in the plain, and surely we will be stronger than them." He listened to their voice, and did so.     And number thee an army, like the army that thou hast lost, horse for horse, and chariot for chariot: and we will fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they. And he hearkened unto their voice, and did so.     ואתה  תמנה־לך  חיל 
כחיל  הנפל  מאותך

כרכב  ונלחמה  אותם

26.    It happened at the return of the year, that Ben Hadad mustered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.     And it came to pass at the return of the year, that Benhadad numbered the Syrians, and went up to Aphek, to fight against Israel.     ויהי  לתשובת  השנה 
ויפקד  בן־הדד
את־ארם  ויעל  אפקה
למלחמה  עם־  ישראל׃
    VYHY LThShVBTh HShNH VYPhQD BN-HDD 'aTh-'aUrM VY'yL 'aPhQH LMLChMH 'yM- YShUr'aL.     And it cometh to pass at the turn of the year, that Ben-Hadad inspecteth the Aramaeans, and goeth up to Aphek, to battle with Israel,     igitur postquam annus transierat recensuit Benadad Syros et ascendit in Afec ut pugnaret contra Israhel
 
27.    The children of Israel were mustered, and were provisioned, and went against them. 28.    A man of God came near and spoke to the king of Israel, and said, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Because the Syrians have said, "Yahweh is a god of the hills, but he is not a god of the valleys;" therefore I will deliver all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am Yahweh.'"     And there came a man of God, and spake unto the king of Israel, and said, Thus saith the LORD, Because the Syrians have said, The LORD is God of the hills, but he is not God of the valleys, therefore will I deliver all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the LORD.     ויגש  איש  האלהים 
ויאמר  אל־מלך
ישראל  ויאמר
כה־אמר  יהוה  יען
אשר  אמרו  ארם  אלהי
הרים  יהוה
ולא־אלהי  עמקים
הוא  ונתתי
את־כל־ההמון  הגדול
הזה  בידך  וידעתם
כי־אני  יהוה׃
    VYGSh 'aYSh H'aLHYM VY'aMUr 'aL-MLK YShUr'aL VY'aMUr KH-'aMUr YHVH Y'yN 'aShUr 'aMUrV 'aUrM 'aLHY HUrYM YHVH VL'a-'aLHY 'yMQYM HV'a VNThThY 'aTh-KL-HHMVN HGDVL HZH BYDK VYD'yThM KY-'aNY YHVH.     And there cometh nigh a man of God, and speaketh unto the king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Because that the Aramaeans have said, God of hills is Jehovah, and He is not God of valleys -- I have given the whole of this great multitude into thy hand, and ye have known that I am Jehovah.`     et accedens unus vir Dei dixit ad regem Israhel haec dicit Dominus quia dixerunt Syri deus montium est Dominus et non est deus vallium dabo omnem multitudinem grandem hanc in manu tua et scietis quia ego Dominus
 
29.    They encamped one over against the other seven days. So it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined; and the children of Israel killed one hundred thousand footmen of the Syrians in one day.     And they pitched one over against the other seven days. And so it was, that in the seventh day the battle was joined: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred thousand footmen in one day.     ויחנו  אלה  נכח  אלה

30.    But the rest fled to Aphek, into the city; and the wall fell on twenty-seven thousand men who were left. 31.    His servants said to him, "See now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings. Please let us put sackcloth on our bodies, and ropes on our heads, and go out to the king of Israel. Maybe he will save your life."     And his servants said unto him, Behold now, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful kings: let us, I pray thee, put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: peradventure he will save thy life.     ויאמרו  אליו  עבדיו 
הנה־נא  שמענו  כי
מלכי  בית  ישראל
כי־מלכי  חסד  הם
נשימה  נא  שקים
במתנינו  וחבלים
בראשנו  ונצא
אל־מלך  ישראל  אולי
יחיה  את־נפשך׃
    VY'aMUrV 'aLYV 'yBDYV HNH-N'a ShM'yNV KY MLKY BYTh YShUr'aL KY-MLKY ChSD HM NShYMH N'a ShQYM BMThNYNV VChBLYM BUr'aShNV VNTSh'a 'aL-MLK YShUr'aL 'aVLY YChYH 'aTh-NPhShK.     And his servants say unto him, `Lo, we pray thee, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel -- that they are kind kings; let us put, we pray thee, sackcloth on our loins, and ropes on our heads, and we go out unto the king of Israel; it may be he doth keep thee alive.`     dixeruntque ei servi sui ecce audivimus quod reges domus Israhel clementes sint ponamus itaque saccos in lumbis nostris et funiculos in capitibus nostris et egrediamur ad regem Israhel forsitan salvabit animas nostras
 
32.    So they put sackcloth on their bodies and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, "Your servant Ben Hadad says, 'Please let me live.'" He said, "Is he still alive? He is my brother."     So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Benhadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.     ויחגרו  שקים 
במתניהם  וחבלים
בראשיהם  ויבאו
אל־מלך  ישראל
ויאמרו  עבדך
בן־הדד  אמר  תחי־נא
נפשי  ויאמר  העודנו
חי  אחי  הוא׃
    VYChGUrV ShQYM BMThNYHM VChBLYM BUr'aShYHM VYB'aV 'aL-MLK YShUr'aL VY'aMUrV 'yBDK BN-HDD 'aMUr ThChY-N'a NPhShY VY'aMUr H'yVDNV ChY 'aChY HV'a.     And they gird sackcloth on their loins, and ropes are on their heads, and they come in unto the king of Israel, and say, `Thy servant Ben-Hadad hath said, Let me live, I pray thee;` and he saith, `Is he yet alive? he is my brother.`     accinxerunt saccis lumbos suos et posuerunt funes in capitibus veneruntque ad regem Israhel et dixerunt servus tuus Benadad dicit vivat oro te anima mea et ille ait si adhuc vivit frater meus est
 
33.    Now the men observed diligently, and hurried to take this phrase; and they said, "Your brother Ben Hadad." Then he said, "Go, bring him." Then Ben Hadad came out to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.     Now the men did diligently observe whether any thing would come from him, and did hastily catch it: and they said, Thy brother Benhadad. Then he said, Go ye, bring him. Then Benhadad came forth to him; and he caused him to come up into the chariot.     והאנשים  ינחשו 
וימהרו  ויחלטו
הממנו  ויאמרו  אחיך
בן־הדד  ויאמר  באו
קחהו  ויצא  אליו
בן־הדד  ויעלהו
על־המרכבה׃
    VH'aNShYM YNChShV VYMHUrV VYChLTV HMMNV VY'aMUrV 'aChYK BN-HDD VY'aMUr B'aV QChHV VYTSh'a 'aLYV BN-HDD VY'yLHV 'yL-HMUrKBH.     And the men observe diligently, and hasten, and catch it from him, and say, `Thy brother Ben-Hadad;` and he saith, `Go ye in, bring him;` and Ben-Hadad cometh out unto him, and he causeth him to come up on the chariot.     quod acceperunt viri pro omine et festinantes rapuerunt verbum ex ore eius atque dixerunt frater tuus Benadad et dixit eis ite et adducite eum egressus est ergo ad eum Benadad et levavit eum in currum suum
 
34.    Ben Hadad said to him, "The cities which my father took from your father I will restore. You shall make streets for yourself in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria." "I," said Ahab, "will let you go with this covenant." So he made a covenant with him, and let him go.     And Ben-hadad said unto him, The cities, which my father took from thy father, I will restore; and thou shalt make streets for thee in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will send thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and sent him away.     ויאמר  אליו  הערים 
אשר־לקח־אבי  מאת
אביך  אשיב  וחוצות
תשים  לך  בדמשק
כאשר־שם  אבי
בשמרון  ואני  בברית
אשלחך  ויכרת־לו
ברית  וישלחהו׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV H'yUrYM 'aShUr-LQCh-'aBY M'aTh 'aBYK 'aShYB VChVTShVTh ThShYM LK BDMShQ K'aShUr-ShM 'aBY BShMUrVN V'aNY BBUrYTh 'aShLChK VYKUrTh-LV BUrYTh VYShLChHV.     And he saith unto him, `The cities that my father took from thy father, I give back, and streets thou dost make for thee in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria;` -- `and I, with a covenant, send thee away;` and he maketh with him a covenant, and sendeth him away.     qui dixit ei civitates quas tulit pater meus a patre tuo reddam et plateas fac tibi in Damasco sicut fecit pater meus in Samaria et ego foederatus recedam a te pepigit ergo foedus et dimisit eum
 
35.    A certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his fellow by the word of Yahweh, "Please strike me!" The man refused to strike him.     And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to smite him.     ואיש  אחד  מבני 
הנביאים  אמר
אל־רעהו  בדבר  יהוה
הכיני  נא  וימאן
האיש  להכתו׃
    V'aYSh 'aChD MBNY HNBY'aYM 'aMUr 'aL-Ur'yHV BDBUr YHVH HKYNY N'a VYM'aN H'aYSh LHKThV.     And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour by the word of Jehovah, `Smite me, I pray thee;` and the man refuseth to smite him,     tunc vir quidam de filiis prophetarum dixit ad socium suum in sermone Domini percute me at ille noluit percutere
 
36.    Then said he to him, "Because you have not obeyed the voice of Yahweh, behold, as soon as you are departed from me, a lion shall kill you." As soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and killed him.     Then said he unto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voice of the LORD, behold, as soon as thou art departed from me, a lion shall slay thee. And as soon as he was departed from him, a lion found him, and slew him.     ויאמר  לו  יען  אשר 
לא־שמעת  בקול  יהוה
הנך  הולך  מאתי
והכך  האריה  וילך
מאצלו  וימצאהו
האריה  ויכהו׃
    VY'aMUr LV Y'yN 'aShUr L'a-ShM'yTh BQVL YHVH HNK HVLK M'aThY VHKK H'aUrYH VYLK M'aTShLV VYMTSh'aHV H'aUrYH VYKHV.     and he saith to him, `Because that thou hast not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, lo, thou art going from me, and the lion hath smitten thee;` and he goeth from him, and the lion findeth him, and smiteth him.     cui ait quia noluisti audire vocem Domini ecce recedes a me et percutiet te leo cumque paululum recessisset ab eo invenit eum leo atque percussit
 
37.    Then he found another man, and said, "Please strike me." The man struck him, smiting and wounding him.     Then he found another man, and said, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man smote him, so that in smiting he wounded him.     וימצא  איש  אחר

    VYMTSh'a 'aYSh 'aChUr VY'aMUr HKYNY N'a VYKHV H'aYSh HKH VPhTSh'y.     And he findeth another man, and saith, `Smite me, I pray thee;` and the man smiteth him, smiting and wounding,     sed et alterum conveniens virum dixit ad eum percute me qui percussit eum et vulneravit
 
38.    So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with his headband over his eyes.     So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and disguised himself with ashes upon his face.     וילך  הנביא  ויעמד

    VYLK HNBY'a VY'yMD LMLK 'yL-HDUrK VYThChPhSh B'aPhUr 'yL-'yYNYV.     and the prophet goeth and standeth for the king on the way, and disguiseth himself with ashes on his eyes.     abiit ergo propheta et occurrit regi in via et mutavit aspersione pulveris os et oculos suos
 
39.    As the king passed by, he cried to the king; and he said, "Your servant went out into the midst of the battle; and behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man to me, and said, 'Guard this man! If by any means he be missing, then your life shall be for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.'     And as the king passed by, he cried unto the king: and he said, Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle; and, behold, a man turned aside, and brought a man unto me, and said, Keep this man: if by any means he be missing, then shall thy life be for his life, or else thou shalt pay a talent of silver.     ויהי  המלך  עבר 
והוא  צעק  אל־המלך
ויאמר  עבדך  יצא
בקרב־המלחמה
והנה־איש  סר  ויבא
אלי  איש  ויאמר  שמר
את־האיש  הזה
אם־הפקד  יפקד
והיתה  נפשך  תחת
נפשו  או  ככר־כסף
תשקול׃
    VYHY HMLK 'yBUr VHV'a TSh'yQ 'aL-HMLK VY'aMUr 'yBDK YTSh'a BQUrB-HMLChMH VHNH-'aYSh SUr VYB'a 'aLY 'aYSh VY'aMUr ShMUr 'aTh-H'aYSh HZH 'aM-HPhQD YPhQD VHYThH NPhShK ThChTh NPhShV 'aV KKUr-KSPh ThShQVL.     And it cometh to pass -- the king is passing by -- that he hath cried unto the king, and saith, `Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle, and lo, a man hath turned aside and bringeth in unto me a man, and saith, Keep this man; if he be at all missing, then hath thy life been for his life, or a talent of silver thou dost weigh out;     cumque rex transiret clamavit ad regem et ait servus tuus egressus est ad proeliandum comminus cumque fugisset vir unus adduxit eum quidam ad me et ait custodi virum istum qui si lapsus fuerit erit anima tua pro anima eius aut talentum argenti adpendes
 
40.    As your servant was busy here and there, he was gone." The king of Israel said to him, "So your judgment shall be; yourself have decided it."     And as thy servant was busy here and there, he was gone. And the king of Israel said unto him, So shall thy judgment be; thyself hast decided it.     ויהי  עבדך  עשה  הנה 
והנה  והוא  איננו
ויאמר  אליו
מלך־ישראל  כן
משפטך  אתה  חרצת׃
    VYHY 'yBDK 'yShH HNH VHNH VHV'a 'aYNNV VY'aMUr 'aLYV MLK-YShUr'aL KN MShPhTK 'aThH ChUrTShTh.     and it cometh to pass, thy servant is working hither and thither, and he is not!` and the king of Israel saith unto him, Right is thy judgment; thou hast determined it.`     dum autem ego turbatus huc illucque me verterem subito non conparuit et ait rex Israhel ad eum hoc est iudicium tuum quod ipse decrevisti
 
41.    He hurried, and took the headband away from his eyes; and the king of Israel recognized that he was of the prophets.     And he hasted, and took the ashes away from his face; and the king of Israel discerned him that he was of the prophets.     וימהר  ויסר 
את־האפר  מעל  עיניו
ויכר  אתו  מלך
ישראל  כי  מהנבאים
הוא׃
    VYMHUr VYSUr 'aTh-H'aPhUr M'yL 'yYNYV VYKUr 'aThV MLK YShUr'aL KY MHNB'aYM HV'a.     And he hasteth and turneth aside the ashes from off his eyes, and the king of Israel discerneth him, that he is of the prophets,     at ille statim abstersit pulverem de facie sua et cognovit eum rex Israhel quod esset de prophetis
 
42.    He said to him, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Because you have let go out of your hand the man whom I had devoted to destruction, therefore your life shall go for his life, and your people for his people.'"     And he said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy people for his people.     ויאמר  אליו  כה  אמר 
יהוה  יען  שלחת
את־איש־חרמי  מיד
והיתה  נפשך  תחת
נפשו  ועמך  תחת
עמו׃
    VY'aMUr 'aLYV KH 'aMUr YHVH Y'yN ShLChTh 'aTh-'aYSh-ChUrMY MYD VHYThH NPhShK ThChTh NPhShV V'yMK ThChTh 'yMV.     and he saith unto him, `Thus said Jehovah, Because thou hast sent away the man I devoted, out of thy hand, even thy life hath been for his life, and thy people for his people;`     qui ait ad eum haec dicit Dominus quia dimisisti virum dignum morte de manu tua erit anima tua pro anima eius et populus tuus pro populo eius
 
43.    The king of Israel went to his house sullen and angry, and came to Samaria.     And the king of Israel went to his house heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria.     וילך  מלך־ישראל 
על־ביתו  סר  וזעף
ויבא  שמרונה׃
    VYLK MLK-YShUr'aL 'yL-BYThV SUr VZ'yPh VYB'a ShMUrVNH.     and the king of Israel goeth unto his house, sulky and wroth, and cometh in to Samaria.     reversus est igitur rex Israhel in domum suam audire contemnens et furibundus venit Samariam
