2.    Hear, heavens, and listen, earth; for Yahweh{"Yahweh" is God's proper Name, sometimes rendered "LORD" (all caps) in other translations.} has spoken: "I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.     Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.     שמעו  שמים  והאזיני

3.    The ox knows his owner, and the donkey his master's crib; but Israel doesn't know, my people don't consider."     The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.     ידע  שור  קנהו

4.    Ah sinful nation, a people loaded with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken Yahweh. They have despised the Holy One of Israel. They are estranged and backward.     Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.     הוי  גוי  חטא  עם

    HVY GVY ChT'a 'yM KBD 'yVN ZUr'y MUr'yYM BNYM MShChYThYM 'yZBV 'aTh-YHVH N'aTShV 'aTh-QDVSh YShUr'aL NZUrV 'aChVUr.     Ah, sinning nation, a people heavy with iniquity, A seed of evil doers, sons -- corrupters! 5.    Why should you be beaten more, that you revolt more and more? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.     Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.     על  מה  תכו  עוד

לחלי  וכל־לבב  דוי׃

6.    From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it: wounds, welts, and open sores. 11.    "What are the multitude of your sacrifices to me?," says Yahweh. "I have had enough of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed animals. I don't delight in the blood of bulls, or of lambs, or of male goats.     To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.     למה־לי  רב־זבחיכם 
יאמר  יהוה  שבעתי
עלות  אילים  וחלב
מריאים  ודם  פרים
וכבשים  ועתודים  לא
חפצתי׃

12.    When you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts?     When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?     כי  תבאו  לראות  פני

13.    Bring no more vain offerings. Incense is an abomination to me; new moons, Sabbaths, and convocations: I can't bear with evil assemblies.     Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.     לא  תוסיפו  הביא

    L'a ThVSYPhV HBY'a MNChTh-ShV'a QTUrTh ThV'yBH HY'a LY ChDSh VShBTh QUr'a MQUr'a L'a-'aVKL 'aVN V'yTShUrH.     Add not to bring in a vain present, Incense -- an abomination it is to Me, New moon, and sabbath, calling of convocation! 14.    My soul hates your New Moons and your appointed feasts. They are a burden to me. I am weary of bearing them.     Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.     חדשיכם  ומועדיכם 
שנאה  נפשי  היו  עלי
לטרח  נלאיתי  נשא׃

15.    When you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you. Yes, when you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.     And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.     ובפרשכם  כפיכם

16.    Wash yourselves, make yourself clean. Put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes. Cease to do evil.     Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;     רחצו  הזכו  הסירו 
רע  מעלליכם  מנגד
עיני  חדלו  הרע׃
    UrChTShV HZKV HSYUrV Ur'y M'yLLYKM MNGD 'yYNY ChDLV HUr'y.     Wash ye, make ye pure, Turn aside the evil of your doings, from before Mine eyes, Cease to do evil, learn to do good.     lavamini mundi estote auferte malum cogitationum vestrarum ab oculis meis quiescite agere perverse

18.    "Come now, and let us reason together," says Yahweh: "Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.     Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.     לכו־נא  ונוכחה

22.    Your silver has become dross, your wine mixed with water.     Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water:     כספך  היה  לסיגים

23.    Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves. Everyone loves bribes, and follows after rewards. They don't judge the fatherless, neither does the cause of the widow come to them.     Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.     שריך  סוררים  וחברי

24.    Therefore the Lord,{The word translated "Lord" is "Adonai."} Yahweh of Armies, the Mighty One of Israel, says: "Ah, I will get relief from my adversaries, and avenge myself of my enemies;     Therefore saith the LORD, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:     לכן  נאם  האדון

ישראל  הוי  אנחם
מצרי  ואנקמה
מאויבי׃
    LKN N'aM H'aDVN YHVH TShB'aVTh 'aBYUr YShUr'aL HVY 'aNChM MTShUrY V'aNQMH M'aVYBY.     Therefore -- the affirmation of the Lord -- Jehovah of Hosts, the Mighty One of Israel: Ah, I am eased of Mine adversaries, And I am avenged of Mine enemies,     propter hoc ait Dominus exercituum Fortis Israhel heu consolabor super hostibus meis et vindicabor de inimicis meis
 
25.    and I will turn my hand on you, thoroughly purge away your dross, and will take away all your tin.     And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin:     ואשיבה  ידי  עליך 
ואצרף  כבר  סיגיך
ואסירה  כל־בדיליך׃
    V'aShYBH YDY 'yLYK V'aTShUrPh KBUr SYGYK V'aSYUrH KL-BDYLYK.     And I turn back My hand upon thee, And I refine as purity thy dross, And I turn aside all thy tin,     et convertam manum meam ad te et excoquam ad purum scoriam tuam et auferam omne stagnum tuum
 
26.    I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning. Afterward you shall be called 'The city of righteousness, a faithful town.'     And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.     ואשיבה  שפטיך 
כבראשנה  ויעציך
כבתחלה  אחרי־כן
יקרא  לך  עיר  הצדק
קריה  נאמנה׃
    V'aShYBH ShPhTYK KBUr'aShNH VY'yTShYK KBThChLH 'aChUrY-KN YQUr'a LK 'yYUr HTShDQ QUrYH N'aMNH.     And I give back thy judges as at the first, And thy counsellors as in the beginning, After this thou art called, `A city of righteousness -- a faithful city.`     et restituam iudices tuos ut fuerunt prius et consiliarios tuos sicut antiquitus post haec vocaberis civitas iusti urbs fidelis
 
27.    Zion shall be redeemed with justice, and her converts with righteousness.     Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.     ציון  במשפט  תפדה 
ושביה  בצדקה׃
    TShYVN BMShPhT ThPhDH VShBYH BTShDQH.     Zion in judgment is redeemed, And her captivity in righteousness.     Sion in iudicio redimetur et reducent eam in iustitia
 
28.    But the destruction of transgressors and sinners shall be together, and those who forsake Yahweh shall be consumed.     And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed.     ושבר  פשעים  וחטאים 
יחדו  ועזבי  יהוה
יכלו׃
    VShBUr PhSh'yYM VChT'aYM YChDV V'yZBY YHVH YKLV.     And the destruction of transgressors and sinners is together, And those forsaking Jehovah are consumed.     et conteret scelestos et peccatores simul et qui dereliquerunt Dominum consumentur
 
29.    For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which you have desired, and you shall be confounded for the gardens that you have chosen.     For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.     כי  יבשו  מאילים 
אשר  חמדתם  ותחפרו
מהגנות  אשר  בחרתם׃
    KY YBShV M'aYLYM 'aShUr ChMDThM VThChPhUrV MHGNVTh 'aShUr BChUrThM.     For men are ashamed because of the oaks That ye have desired, And ye are confounded because of the gardens That ye have chosen.     confundentur enim ab idolis quibus sacrificaverunt et erubescetis super hortis quos elegeratis
 
30.    For you shall be as an oak whose leaf fades, and as a garden that has no water.     For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.     כי  תהיו  כאלה  נבלת 
עלה  וכגנה  אשר־מים
אין  לה׃
    KY ThHYV K'aLH NBLTh 'yLH VKGNH 'aShUr-MYM 'aYN LH.     For ye are as an oak whose leaf is fading, And as a garden that hath no water.     cum fueritis velut quercus defluentibus foliis et velut hortus absque aqua
 
31.    The strong will be like tinder, and his work like a spark. They will both burn together, and no one will quench them."     And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them.     והיה  החסן  לנערת 
ופעלו  לניצוץ
ובערו  שניהם  יחדו
ואין  מכבה׃
    VHYH HChSN LN'yUrTh VPh'yLV LNYTShVTSh VB'yUrV ShNYHM YChDV V'aYN MKBH.     And the strong hath been for tow, And his work for a spark, And burned have both of them together, And there is none quenching!     et erit fortitudo vestra ut favilla stuppae et opus vestrum quasi scintilla et succendetur utrumque simul et non erit qui extinguat
