1.    For you yourselves know, brothers, our visit to you wasn't in vain,     For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain:     αυτοι γαρ οιδατε αδελφοι την εισοδον ημων την προς υμας οτι ου κενη γεγονεν     For yourselves have known, brethren, our entrance in unto you, that it did not become vain,     nam ipsi scitis fratres introitum nostrum ad vos quia non inanis fuit

2.    but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as you know, at Philippi, we grew bold in our God to tell you the Good News of God in much conflict.     But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.     αλλα προπαθοντες και υβρισθεντες καθως οιδατε εν φιλιπποις επαρρησιασαμεθα εν τω θεω ημων λαλησαι προς υμας το ευαγγελιον του θεου εν πολλω αγωνι     but having both suffered before, and having been injuriously treated (as ye have known) in Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the good news of God in much conflict,     sed ante passi et contumeliis affecti sicut scitis in Philippis fiduciam habuimus in Deo nostro loqui ad vos evangelium Dei in multa sollicitudine

3.    For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in deception.     For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile:     η γαρ παρακλησις ημων ουκ εκ πλανης ουδε εξ ακαθαρσιας ουδε εν δολω     for our exhortation is not out of deceit, nor out of uncleanness, nor in guile,     exhortatio enim nostra non de errore neque de inmunditia neque in dolo

4.    But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts.     But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.     αλλα καθως δεδοκιμασμεθα υπο του θεου πιστευθηναι το ευαγγελιον ουτως λαλουμεν ουχ ως ανθρωποις αρεσκοντες αλλα θεω τω δοκιμαζοντι τας καρδιας ημων     but as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the good news, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who is proving our hearts,     sed sicut probati sumus a Deo ut crederetur nobis evangelium ita loquimur non quasi hominibus placentes sed Deo qui probat corda nostra

5.    For neither were we at any time found using words of flattery, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness (God is witness),     For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:     ουτε γαρ ποτε εν λογω κολακειας εγενηθημεν καθως οιδατε ουτε εν προφασει πλεονεξιας θεος μαρτυς     for at no time did we come with speech of flattery, (as ye have known,) nor in a pretext for covetousness, (God is witness!)     neque enim aliquando fuimus in sermone adulationis sicut scitis neque in occasione avaritiae Deus testis est

6.    nor seeking glory from men (neither from you nor from others), when we might have claimed authority as apostles of Christ.     Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.     ουτε ζητουντες εξ ανθρωπων δοξαν ουτε αφ υμων ουτε απ αλλων     nor seeking of men glory, neither from you nor from others, being able to be burdensome, as Christ`s apostles.     nec quaerentes ab hominibus gloriam neque a vobis neque ab aliis

7.    But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children.     But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:     δυναμενοι εν βαρει ειναι ως χριστου αποστολοι αλλα εγενηθημεν νηπιοι εν μεσω υμων ως εαν τροφος θαλπη τα εαυτης τεκνα     But we became gentle in your midst, as a nurse may cherish her own children,     cum possimus oneri esse ut Christi apostoli sed facti sumus lenes in medio vestrum tamquam si nutrix foveat filios suos

8.    Even so, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you, not the Good News of God only, but also our own souls, because you had become very dear to us.     So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.     ουτως ομειρομενοι υμων ευδοκουμεν μεταδουναι υμιν ου μονον το ευαγγελιον του θεου αλλα και τας εαυτων ψυχας διοτι αγαπητοι ημιν εγενηθητε     so being desirous of you, we are well-pleased to impart to you not only the good news of God, but also our own souls, because beloved ye have become to us,     ita desiderantes vos cupide volebamus tradere vobis non solum evangelium Dei sed etiam animas nostras quoniam carissimi nobis facti estis

9.    For you remember, brothers, our labor and travail; for working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached to you the Good News of God.     For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.     μνημονευετε γαρ αδελφοι τον κοπον ημων και τον μοχθον νυκτος και ημερας εργαζομενοι προς το μη επιβαρησαι τινα υμων εκηρυξαμεν εις υμας το ευαγγελιον του θεου     for ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail, for, night and day working not to be a burden upon any of you, we did preach to you the good news of God;     memores enim estis fratres laborem nostrum et fatigationem nocte et die operantes ne quem vestrum gravaremus praedicavimus in vobis evangelium Dei

10.    You are witnesses with God, how holy, righteously, and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe.     Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:     υμεις μαρτυρες και ο θεος ως οσιως και δικαιως και αμεμπτως υμιν τοις πιστευουσιν εγενηθημεν     ye are witnesses -- God also -- how kindly and righteously, and blamelessly to you who believe we became,     vos testes estis et Deus quam sancte et iuste et sine querella vobis qui credidistis fuimus

11.    As you know, we exhorted, comforted, and implored every one of you, as a father does his own children,     As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,     καθαπερ οιδατε ως ενα εκαστον υμων ως πατηρ τεκνα εαυτου παρακαλουντες υμας και παραμυθουμενοι     even as ye have known, how each one of you, as a father his own children, we are exhorting you, and comforting, and testifying,     sicut scitis qualiter unumquemque vestrum tamquam pater filios suos

12.    to the end that you should walk worthily of God, who calls you into his own Kingdom and glory.     That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.     και μαρτυρομενοι εις το περιπατειν υμας αξιως του θεου του καλουντος υμας εις την εαυτου βασιλειαν και δοξαν     for your walking worthily of God, who is calling you to His own reign and glory.     deprecantes vos et consolantes testificati sumus ut ambularetis digne Deo qui vocavit vos in suum regnum et gloriam

13.    For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe.     For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.     και δια τουτο και ημεις ευχαριστουμεν τω θεω αδιαλειπτως οτι παραλαβοντες λογον ακοης παρ ημων του θεου εδεξασθε ου λογον ανθρωπων αλλα καθως εστιν αληθως λογον θεου ος και ενεργειται εν υμιν τοις πιστευουσιν     Because of this also, we -- we do give thanks to God continually, that, having received the word of hearing from us of God, ye accepted, not the word of man, but as it is truly, the word of God, who also doth work in you who believe;     ideo et nos gratias agimus Deo sine intermissione quoniam cum accepissetis a nobis verbum auditus Dei accepistis non ut verbum hominum sed sicut est vere verbum Dei qui operatur in vobis qui credidistis

14.    For you, brothers, became imitators of the assemblies of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus; for you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews;     For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:     υμεις γαρ μιμηται εγενηθητε αδελφοι των εκκλησιων του θεου των ουσων εν τη ιουδαια εν χριστω ιησου οτι τα αυτα επαθετε και υμεις υπο των ιδιων συμφυλετων καθως και αυτοι υπο των ιουδαιων     for ye became imitators, brethren, of the assemblies of God that are in Judea in Christ Jesus, because such things ye suffered, even ye, from your own countrymen, as also they from the Jews,     vos enim imitatores facti estis fratres ecclesiarum Dei quae sunt in Iudaea in Christo Iesu quia eadem passi estis et vos a contribulibus vestris sicut et ipsi a Iudaeis

15.    who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out, and didn't please God, and are contrary to all men;     Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:     των και τον κυριον αποκτειναντων ιησουν και τους προφητας και ημασ εκδιωξαντων και θεω μη αρεσκοντων και πασιν ανθρωποις εναντιων     who did both put to death the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and did persecute us, and God they are not pleasing, and to all men are contrary,     qui et Dominum occiderunt Iesum et prophetas et nos persecuti sunt et Deo non placent et omnibus hominibus adversantur

16.    forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved; to fill up their sins always. But wrath has come on them to the uttermost.     Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.     κωλυοντων ημας τοις εθνεσιν λαλησαι ινα σωθωσιν εις το αναπληρωσαι αυτων τας αμαρτιας παντοτε εφθασεν δε επ αυτους η οργη εις τελος     forbidding us to speak to the nations that they might be saved, to fill up their sins always, but the anger did come upon them -- to the end!     prohibentes nos gentibus loqui ut salvae fiant ut impleant peccata sua semper praevenit autem ira Dei super illos usque in finem

17.    But we, brothers, being bereaved of you for a short season, in presence, not in heart, tried even harder to see your face with great desire,     But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.     ημεις δε αδελφοι απορφανισθεντες αφ υμων προς καιρον ωρας προσωπω ου καρδια περισσοτερως εσπουδασαμεν το προσωπον υμων ιδειν εν πολλη επιθυμια     And we, brethren, having been taken from you for the space of an hour -- in presence, not in heart -- did hasten the more abundantly to see your face in much desire,     nos autem fratres desolati a vobis ad tempus horae aspectu non corde abundantius festinavimus faciem vestram videre cum multo desiderio

18.    because we wanted to come to you--indeed, I, Paul, once and again--but Satan hindered us.     Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.     διοτι ηθελησαμεν ελθειν προς υμας εγω μεν παυλος και απαξ και δις και ενεκοψεν ημας ο σατανας     wherefore we wished to come unto you, (I indeed Paul,) both once and again, and the Adversary did hinder us;     quoniam voluimus venire ad vos ego quidem Paulus et semel et iterum et inpedivit nos Satanas

19.    For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Isn't it even you, before our Lord Jesus{TR adds "Christ"} at his coming?     For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?     τις γαρ ημων ελπις η χαρα η στεφανος καυχησεως η ουχι και υμεις εμπροσθεν του κυριου ημων ιησου εν τη αυτου παρουσια     for what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? are not even ye before our Lord Jesus Christ in his presence?     quae est enim nostra spes aut gaudium aut corona gloriae nonne vos ante Dominum nostrum Iesum estis in adventu eius

20.    For you are our glory and our joy.     For ye are our glory and joy.     υμεις γαρ εστε η δοξα ημων και η χαρα     for ye are our glory and joy.     vos enim estis gloria nostra et gaudium
