1.    For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,     For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;     ουτος γαρ ο μελχισεδεκ βασιλευς σαλημ ιερευς του θεου του υψιστου ο συναντησας αβρααμ υποστρεφοντι απο της κοπης των βασιλεων και ευλογησας αυτον     For this Melchisedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, who did meet Abraham turning back from the smiting of the kings, and did bless him,     hic enim Melchisedech rex Salem sacerdos Dei summi qui obviavit Abrahae regresso a caede regum et benedixit ei
 
2.    to whom also Abraham divided a tenth part of all (being first, by interpretation, king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem, which is king of peace;     To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;     ω και δεκατην απο παντων εμερισεν αβρααμ πρωτον μεν ερμηνευομενος βασιλευς δικαιοσυνης επειτα δε και βασιλευς σαλημ ο εστιν βασιλευς ειρηνης     to whom also a tenth of all did Abraham divide, (first, indeed, being interpreted, `King of righteousness,` and then also, King of Salem, which is, King of Peace,)     cui decimas omnium divisit Abraham primum quidem qui interpretatur rex iustitiae deinde autem et rex Salem quod est rex pacis
 
3.    without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God), remains a priest continually.     Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.     απατωρ αμητωρ αγενεαλογητος μητε αρχην ημερων μητε ζωης τελος εχων αφωμοιωμενος δε τω υιω του θεου μενει ιερευς εις το διηνεκες     without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, and being made like to the Son of God, doth remain a priest continually.     sine patre sine matre sine genealogia neque initium dierum neque finem vitae habens adsimilatus autem Filio Dei manet sacerdos in perpetuum
 
4.    Now consider how great this man was, to whom even Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth out of the best spoils.     Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.     θεωρειτε δε πηλικος ουτος ω [και] δεκατην αβρααμ εδωκεν εκ των ακροθινιων ο πατριαρχης     And see how great this one is, to whom also a tenth Abraham the patriarch did give out of the best of the spoils,     intuemini autem quantus sit hic cui et decimam dedit de praecipuis Abraham patriarcha
 
5.    They indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest's office have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brothers, though these have come out of the body of Abraham,     And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham:     και οι μεν εκ των υιων λευι την ιερατειαν λαμβανοντες εντολην εχουσιν αποδεκατουν τον λαον κατα τον νομον τουτ εστιν τους αδελφους αυτων καιπερ εξεληλυθοτας εκ της οσφυος αβρααμ     and those, indeed, out of the sons of Levi receiving the priesthood, a command have to take tithes from the people according to the law, that is, their brethren, even though they came forth out of the loins of Abraham;     et quidem de filiis Levi sacerdotium accipientes mandatum habent decimas sumere a populo secundum legem id est a fratribus suis quamquam et ipsi exierunt de lumbis Abrahae
 
6.    but he whose genealogy is not counted from them has accepted tithes from Abraham, and has blessed him who has the promises.     But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises.     ο δε μη γενεαλογουμενος εξ αυτων δεδεκατωκεν αβρααμ και τον εχοντα τας επαγγελιας ευλογηκεν     and he who was not reckoned by genealogy of them, received tithes from Abraham, and him having the promises he hath blessed,     cuius autem generatio non adnumeratur in eis decimas sumpsit Abraham et hunc qui habebat repromissiones benedixit
 
7.    But without any dispute the lesser is blessed by the greater.     And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better.     χωρις δε πασης αντιλογιας το ελαττον υπο του κρειττονος ευλογειται     and apart from all controversy, the less by the better is blessed --     sine ulla autem contradictione quod minus est a meliore benedicitur
 
8.    Here people who die receive tithes, but there one receives tithes of whom it is testified that he lives.     And here men that die receive tithes; but there he receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that he liveth.     και ωδε μεν δεκατας αποθνησκοντες ανθρωποι λαμβανουσιν εκει δε μαρτυρουμενος οτι ζη     and here, indeed, men who die do receive tithes, and there he, who is testified to that he was living,     et hic quidem decimas morientes homines accipiunt ibi autem contestatus quia vivit
 
9.    We can say that through Abraham even Levi, who receives tithes, has paid tithes,     And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.     και ως επος ειπειν δι αβρααμ και λευι ο δεκατας λαμβανων δεδεκατωται     and so to speak, through Abraham even Levi who is receiving tithes, hath paid tithes,     et ut ita dictum sit per Abraham et Levi qui decimas accipit decimatus est
 
10.    for he was yet in the body of his father when Melchizedek met him.     For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.     ετι γαρ εν τη οσφυι του πατρος ην οτε συνηντησεν αυτω μελχισεδεκ     for he was yet in the loins of the father when Melchisedek met him.     adhuc enim in lumbis patris erat quando obviavit ei Melchisedech
 
11.    Now if there was perfection through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people have received the law), what further need was there for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be called after the order of Aaron?     If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron?     ει μεν ουν τελειωσις δια της λευιτικης ιερωσυνης ην ο λαος γαρ επ αυτησ νενομοθετηται τις ετι χρεια κατα την ταξιν μελχισεδεκ ετερον ανιστασθαι ιερεα και ου κατα την ταξιν ααρων λεγεσθαι     If indeed, then, perfection were through the Levitical priesthood -- for the people under it had received law -- what further need, according to the order of Melchisedek, for another priest to arise, and not to be called according to the order of Aaron?     si ergo consummatio per sacerdotium leviticum erat populus enim sub ipso legem accepit quid adhuc necessarium secundum ordinem Melchisedech alium surgere sacerdotem et non secundum ordinem Aaron dici
 
12.    For the priesthood being changed, there is of necessity a change made also in the law.     For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.     μετατιθεμενης γαρ της ιερωσυνης εξ αναγκης και νομου μεταθεσις γινεται     for the priesthood being changed, of necessity also, of the law a change doth come,     translato enim sacerdotio necesse est ut et legis translatio fiat
 
13.    For he of whom these things are said belongs to another tribe, from which no one has officiated at the altar.     For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave attendance at the altar.     εφ ον γαρ λεγεται ταυτα φυλης ετερας μετεσχηκεν αφ ης ουδεις προσεσχηκεν τω θυσιαστηριω     for he of whom these things are said in another tribe hath had part, of whom no one gave attendance at the altar,     in quo enim haec dicuntur de alia tribu est de qua nullus altario praesto fuit
 
14.    For it is evident that our Lord has sprung out of Judah, about which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.     For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.     προδηλον γαρ οτι εξ ιουδα ανατεταλκεν ο κυριος ημων εις ην φυλην περι ιερεων ουδεν μωυσησ ελαλησεν     for it is evident that out of Judah hath arisen our Lord, in regard to which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood.     manifestum enim quod ex Iuda ortus sit Dominus noster in qua tribu nihil de sacerdotibus Moses locutus est
 
15.    This is yet more abundantly evident, if after the likeness of Melchizedek there arises another priest,     And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest,     και περισσοτερον ετι καταδηλον εστιν ει κατα την ομοιοτητα μελχισεδεκ ανισταται ιερευς ετερος     And it is yet more abundantly most evident, if according to the similitude of Melchisedek there doth arise another priest,     et amplius adhuc manifestum est si secundum similitudinem Melchisedech exsurgit alius sacerdos
 
16.    who has been made, not after the law of a fleshly commandment, but after the power of an endless life:     Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.     ος ου κατα νομον εντολης σαρκινησ γεγονεν αλλα κατα δυναμιν ζωης ακαταλυτου     who came not according to the law of a fleshly command, but according to the power of an endless life,     qui non secundum legem mandati carnalis factus est sed secundum virtutem vitae insolubilis
 
17.    for it is testified, "You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek."{Psalm 110:4}     For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.     μαρτυρειται γαρ οτι συ ιερευς εις τον αιωνα κατα την ταξιν μελχισεδεκ     for He doth testify -- `Thou art a priest -- to the age, according to the order of Melchisedek;`     contestatur enim quoniam tu es sacerdos in aeternum secundum ordinem Melchisedech
 
18.    For there is an annulling of a foregoing commandment because of its weakness and uselessness     For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof.     αθετησις μεν γαρ γινεται προαγουσης εντολης δια το αυτης ασθενες και ανωφελες     for a disannulling indeed doth come of the command going before because of its weakness, and unprofitableness,     reprobatio quidem fit praecedentis mandati propter infirmitatem eius et inutilitatem
 
19.    (for the law made nothing perfect), and a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.     For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.     ουδεν γαρ ετελειωσεν ο νομος επεισαγωγη δε κρειττονος ελπιδος δι ης εγγιζομεν τω θεω     (for nothing did the law perfect) and the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw nigh to God.     nihil enim ad perfectum adduxit lex introductio vero melioris spei per quam proximamus ad Deum
 
20.    Inasmuch as he was not made priest without the taking of an oath     And inasmuch as not without an oath he was made priest:     και καθ οσον ου χωρις ορκωμοσιας οι μεν γαρ χωρις ορκωμοσιας εισιν ιερεις γεγονοτες     And inasmuch as it is not apart from oath, (for those indeed apart from oath are become priests,     et quantum est non sine iureiurando alii quidem sine iureiurando sacerdotes facti sunt
 
21.    (for they indeed have been made priests without an oath), but he with an oath by him that says of him, "The Lord swore and will not change his mind, 'You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.'"{Psalm 110:4}     (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)     ο δε μετα ορκωμοσιας δια του λεγοντος προς αυτον ωμοσεν κυριος και ου μεταμεληθησεται συ ιερευς εις τον αιωνα      and he with an oath through Him who is saying unto him, `The Lord sware, and will not repent, Thou art a priest -- to the age, according to the order of Melchisedek;`)     hic autem cum iureiurando per eum qui dixit ad illum iuravit Dominus et non paenitebit tu es sacerdos in aeternum
 
22.    By so much, Jesus has become the collateral of a better covenant.     By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.     κατα τοσουτο [και] κρειττονος διαθηκης γεγονεν εγγυος ιησους     by so much of a better covenant hath Jesus become surety,     in tantum melioris testamenti sponsor factus est Iesus
 
23.    Many, indeed, have been made priests, because they are hindered from continuing by death.     And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:     και οι μεν πλειονες εισιν γεγονοτες ιερεις δια το θανατω κωλυεσθαι παραμενειν     and those indeed are many who have become priests, because by death they are hindered from remaining;     et alii quidem plures facti sunt sacerdotes idcirco quod morte prohiberentur permanere
 
24.    But he, because he lives forever, has his priesthood unchangeable.     But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.     ο δε δια το μενειν αυτον εις τον αιωνα απαραβατον εχει την ιερωσυνην     and he, because of his remaining -- to the age, hath the priesthood not transient,     hic autem eo quod maneat in aeternum sempiternum habet sacerdotium
 
25.    Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.     Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.     οθεν και σωζειν εις το παντελες δυναται τους προσερχομενους δι αυτου τω θεω παντοτε ζων εις το εντυγχανειν υπερ αυτων     whence also he is able to save to the very end, those coming through him unto God -- ever living to make intercession for them.     unde et salvare in perpetuo potest accedentes per semet ipsum ad Deum semper vivens ad interpellandum pro eis
 
26.    For such a high priest was fitting for us: holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;     For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;     τοιουτος γαρ ημιν και επρεπεν αρχιερευς οσιος ακακος αμιαντος κεχωρισμενος απο των αμαρτωλων και υψηλοτερος των ουρανων γενομενος     For such a chief priest did become us -- kind, harmless, undefiled, separate from the sinners, and become higher than the heavens,     talis enim decebat ut nobis esset pontifex sanctus innocens inpollutus segregatus a peccatoribus et excelsior caelis factus
 
27.    who doesn't need, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. For he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.     Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.     ος ουκ εχει καθ ημεραν αναγκην ωσπερ οι αρχιερεις προτερον υπερ των ιδιων αμαρτιων θυσιας αναφερειν επειτα των του λαου τουτο γαρ εποιησεν εφαπαξ εαυτον ανενεγκας     who hath no necessity daily, as the chief priests, first for his own sins to offer up sacrifice, then for those of the people; for this he did once, having offered up himself;     qui non habet cotidie necessitatem quemadmodum sacerdotes prius pro suis delictis hostias offerre deinde pro populi hoc enim fecit semel se offerendo
 
28.    For the law appoints men as high priests who have weakness, but the word of the oath which came after the law appoints a Son forever who has been perfected.     For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.     ο νομος γαρ ανθρωπους καθιστησιν αρχιερεις εχοντας ασθενειαν ο λογος δε της ορκωμοσιας της μετα τον νομον υιον εις τον αιωνα τετελειωμενον     for the law doth appoint men chief priests, having infirmity, but the word of the oath that is after the law appointeth the Son -- to the age having been perfected.     lex enim homines constituit sacerdotes infirmitatem habentes sermo autem iurisiurandi qui post legem est Filium in aeternum perfectum
