1.    Saul spoke to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David.     And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David.     וידבר  שאול

    VYDBUr Sh'aVL 'aL-YVNThN BNV V'aL-KL-'yBDYV LHMYTh 'aTh-DVD VYHVNThN BN- Sh'aVL ChPhTSh BDVD M'aD.     And Saul speaketh unto Jonathan his son, and unto all his servants, to put David to death,     locutus est autem Saul ad Ionathan filium suum et ad omnes servos suos ut occiderent David porro Ionathan filius Saul diligebat David valde
 
2.    Jonathan told David, saying, "Saul my father seeks to kill you. Now therefore, please take care of yourself in the morning, and live in a secret place, and hide yourself.     But Jonathan Saul's son delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself:     ויגד  יהונתן  לדוד 
לאמר  מבקש  שאול
אבי  להמיתך  ועתה
השמר־נא  בבקר
וישבת  בסתר
ונחבאת׃
    VYGD YHVNThN LDVD L'aMUr MBQSh Sh'aVL 'aBY LHMYThK V'yThH HShMUr-N'a BBQUr VYShBTh BSThUr VNChB'aTh.     and Jonathan son of Saul delighted exceedingly in David, and Jonathan declareth to David, saying, `Saul my father is seeking to put thee to death, and, now, take heed, I pray thee, in the morning, and thou hast abode in a secret place, and been hidden,     et indicavit Ionathan David dicens quaerit Saul pater meus occidere te quapropter observa te quaeso mane et manebis clam et absconderis
 
3.    I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will talk with my father about you; and if I see anything, I will tell you."     And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee.     ואני  אצא  ועמדתי 
ליד־אבי  בשדה  אשר
אתה  שם  ואני  אדבר
בך  אל־אבי  וראיתי
מה  והגדתי  לך׃
    V'aNY 'aTSh'a V'yMDThY LYD-'aBY BShDH 'aShUr 'aThH ShM V'aNY 'aDBUr BK 'aL-'aBY VUr'aYThY MH VHGDThY LK.     and I -- I go out, and have stood by the side of my father in the field where thou art, and I speak of thee unto my father, and have seen what is coming, and have declared to thee.`     ego autem egrediens stabo iuxta patrem meum in agro ubicumque fueris et ego loquar de te ad patrem meum et quodcumque videro nuntiabo tibi
 
4.    Jonathan spoke good of David to Saul his father, and said to him, "Don't let the king sin against his servant, against David; because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you;     And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good:     וידבר  יהונתן  בדוד 
טוב  אל־שאול  אביו
ויאמר  אליו
אל־יחטא  המלך
בעבדו  בדוד  כי  לוא
חטא  לך  וכי  מעשיו
טוב־לך  מאד׃
    VYDBUr YHVNThN BDVD TVB 'aL-Sh'aVL 'aBYV VY'aMUr 'aLYV 'aL-YChT'a HMLK B'yBDV BDVD KY LV'a ChT'a LK VKY M'yShYV TVB-LK M'aD.     And Jonathan speaketh good of David unto Saul his father, and saith unto him, `Let not the king sin against his servant, against David, because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works for thee are very good;     locutus est ergo Ionathan de David bona ad Saul patrem suum dixitque ad eum ne pecces rex in servum tuum David quia non peccavit tibi et opera eius bona sunt tibi valde
 
5.    for he put his life in his hand, and struck the Philistine, and Yahweh worked a great victory for all Israel. You saw it, and rejoiced. Why then will you sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?"     For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?     וישם  את־נפשו  בכפו 
ויך  את־הפלשתי
ויעש  יהוה  תשועה
גדולה  לכל־  ישראל
ראית  ותשמח  ולמה
תחטא  בדם  נקי
להמית  את־דוד  חנם׃
    VYShM 'aTh-NPhShV BKPhV VYK 'aTh-HPhLShThY VY'ySh YHVH ThShV'yH GDVLH LKL- YShUr'aL Ur'aYTh VThShMCh VLMH ThChT'a BDM NQY LHMYTh 'aTh-DVD ChNM.     yea, he putteth his life in his hand, and smiteth the Philistine, and Jehovah worketh a great salvation for all Israel; thou hast seen, and dost rejoice, and why dost thou sin against innocent blood, to put David to death for nought?`     et posuit animam suam in manu sua et percussit Philistheum et fecit Dominus salutem magnam universo Israhel vidisti et laetatus es quare ergo peccas in sanguine innoxio interficiens David qui est absque culpa
 
6.    Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan: and Saul swore, "As Yahweh lives, he shall not be put to death."     And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul sware, As the LORD liveth, he shall not be slain.     וישמע  שאול  בקול 
יהונתן  וישבע  שאול
חי־יהוה  אם־יומת׃
    VYShM'y Sh'aVL BQVL YHVNThN VYShB'y Sh'aVL ChY-YHVH 'aM-YVMTh.     And Saul hearkeneth to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul sweareth, `Jehovah liveth -- he doth not die.`     quod cum audisset Saul placatus voce Ionathae iuravit vivit Dominus quia non occidetur
 
7.    Jonathan called David, and Jonathan showed him all those things. Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as before.     And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan shewed him all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as in times past.     ויקרא  יהונתן  לדוד 
ויגד־לו  יהונתן  את
כל־הדברים  האלה

את־דוד  אל־שאול

    VYQUr'a YHVNThN LDVD VYGD-LV YHVNThN 'aTh KL-HDBUrYM H'aLH VYB'a YHVNThN 'aTh-DVD 'aL-Sh'aVL VYHY LPhNYV K'aThMVL ShLShVM.     And Jonathan calleth for David, and Jonathan declareth to him all these words, and Jonathan bringeth in David unto Saul, and he is before him as heretofore.     vocavit itaque Ionathan David et indicavit ei omnia verba haec et introduxit Ionathan David ad Saul et fuit ante eum sicut fuerat heri et nudius tertius
 
8.    There was war again. David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and killed them with a great slaughter; and they fled before him.     And there was war again: and David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled from him.     ותוסף  המלחמה 
להיות  ויצא  דוד
וילחם  בפלשתים  ויך
בהם  מכה  גדולה
וינסו  מפניו׃
    VThVSPh HMLChMH LHYVTh VYTSh'a DVD VYLChM BPhLShThYM VYK BHM MKH GDVLH VYNSV MPhNYV.     And there addeth to be war, and David goeth out and fighteth against the Philistines, and smiteth among them -- a great smiting, and they flee from his face.     motum est autem rursus bellum et egressus David pugnavit adversus Philisthim percussitque eos plaga magna et fugerunt a facie eius
 
9.    An evil spirit from Yahweh was on Saul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand; and David was playing with his hand.     And the evil spirit from the LORD was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.     ותהי  רוח  יהוה  רעה 
אל־שאול  והוא
בביתו  יושב  וחניתו
בידו  ודוד  מנגן
ביד׃
    VThHY UrVCh YHVH Ur'yH 'aL-Sh'aVL VHV'a BBYThV YVShB VChNYThV BYDV VDVD MNGN BYD.     And a spirit of sadness from Jehovah is unto Saul, and he is sitting in his house, and his javelin in his hand, and David is playing with the hand,     et factus est spiritus Domini malus in Saul sedebat autem in domo sua et tenebat lanceam porro David psallebat in manu sua
 
10.    Saul sought to pin David even to the wall with the spear; but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he stuck the spear into the wall. David fled, and escaped that night.     And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin, but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.     ויבקש  שאול  להכות 
בחנית  בדוד  ובקיר
ויפטר  מפני  שאול
ויך  את־  החנית
בקיר  ודוד  נס
וימלט  בלילה  הוא׃
    VYBQSh Sh'aVL LHKVTh BChNYTh BDVD VBQYUr VYPhTUr MPhNY Sh'aVL VYK 'aTh- HChNYTh BQYUr VDVD NS VYMLT BLYLH HV'a.     and Saul seeketh to smite with the javelin through David, and through the wall, and he freeth himself from the presence of Saul, and he smiteth the javelin through the wall; and David hath fled and escapeth during that night.     nisusque est Saul configere lancea David in pariete et declinavit David a facie Saul lancea autem casso vulnere perlata est in parietem et David fugit et salvatus est nocte illa
 
11.    Saul sent messengers to David's house, to watch him, and to kill him in the morning. Michal, David's wife, told him, saying, "If you don't save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed."     Saul also sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Michal David's wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to morrow thou shalt be slain.     וישלח  שאול  מלאכים 
אל־בית  דוד  לשמרו
ולהמיתו  בבקר  ותגד
לדוד  מיכל  אשתו
לאמר  אם־אינך  ממלט
את־נפשך  הלילה  מחר
אתה  מומת׃
    VYShLCh Sh'aVL ML'aKYM 'aL-BYTh DVD LShMUrV VLHMYThV BBQUr VThGD LDVD MYKL 'aShThV L'aMUr 'aM-'aYNK MMLT 'aTh-NPhShK HLYLH MChUr 'aThH MVMTh.     And Saul sendeth messengers unto the house of David to watch him, and to put him to death in the morning; and Michal his wife declareth to David, saying, `If thou art not delivering thy life to-night -- tomorrow thou art put to death.`     misit ergo Saul satellites suos in domum David ut custodirent eum et interficeretur mane quod cum adnuntiasset David Michol uxor sua dicens nisi salvaveris te nocte hac cras morieris
 
12.    So Michal let David down through the window. He went, fled, and escaped.     So Michal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled, and escaped.     ותרד  מיכל  את־דוד 
בעד  החלון  וילך
ויברח  וימלט׃
    VThUrD MYKL 'aTh-DVD B'yD HChLVN VYLK VYBUrCh VYMLT.     And Michal causeth David to go down through the window, and he goeth on, and fleeth, and escapeth;     deposuit eum per fenestram porro ille abiit et aufugit atque salvatus est
 
13.    Michal took the teraphim, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats' [hair] at its head, and covered it with the clothes.     And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats' hair for his bolster, and covered it with a cloth.     ותקח  מיכל 
את־התרפים  ותשם
אל־המטה  ואת  כביר
העזים  שמה  מראשתיו
ותכס  בבגד׃
    VThQCh MYKL 'aTh-HThUrPhYM VThShM 'aL-HMTH V'aTh KBYUr H'yZYM ShMH MUr'aShThYV VThKS BBGD.     and Michal taketh the teraphim, and layeth on the bed, and the mattress of goats` hair she hath put for his pillows, and covereth with a garment.     tulit autem Michol statuam et posuit eam super lectum et pellem pilosam caprarum posuit ad caput eius et operuit eam vestimentis
 
14.    When Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, "He is sick."     And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick.     וישלח  שאול  מלאכים 
לקחת  את־דוד  ותאמר
חלה  הוא׃
    VYShLCh Sh'aVL ML'aKYM LQChTh 'aTh-DVD VTh'aMUr ChLH HV'a.     And Saul sendeth messengers to take David, and she saith, `He is sick.`     misit autem Saul apparitores qui raperent David et responsum est quod aegrotaret
 
15.    Saul sent the messengers to see David, saying, "Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him."     And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him.     וישלח  שאול 
את־המלאכים  לראות
את־דוד  לאמר  העלו
אתו  במטה  אלי
להמתו׃
    VYShLCh Sh'aVL 'aTh-HML'aKYM LUr'aVTh 'aTh-DVD L'aMUr H'yLV 'aThV BMTH 'aLY LHMThV.     And Saul sendeth the messengers to see David, saying, `Bring him up in the bed unto me,` -- to put him to death.     rursumque misit Saul nuntios ut viderent David dicens adferte eum ad me in lecto ut occidatur
 
16.    When the messengers came in, behold, the teraphim was in the bed, with the pillow of goats' hair at its head.     And when the messengers were come in, behold, there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goats' hair for his bolster.     ויבאו  המלאכים 
והנה  התרפים
אל־המטה  וכביר
העזים  מראשתיו׃
    VYB'aV HML'aKYM VHNH HThUrPhYM 'aL-HMTH VKBYUr H'yZYM MUr'aShThYV.     And the messengers come in, and lo, the teraphim are on the bed, and the mattress of goats` hair, for his pillows.     cumque venissent nuntii inventum est simulacrum super lectum et pellis caprarum ad caput eius
 
17.    Saul said to Michal, "Why have you deceived me thus, and let my enemy go, so that he is escaped?" Michal answered Saul, "He said to me, 'Let me go! Why should I kill you?'"     And Saul said unto Michal, Why hast thou deceived me so, and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped? And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill thee?     ויאמר  שאול 
אל־מיכל  למה  ככה
רמיתני  ותשלחי
את־איבי  וימלט
ותאמר  מיכל
אל־שאול  הוא־אמר
אלי  שלחני  למה
אמיתך׃
    VY'aMUr Sh'aVL 'aL-MYKL LMH KKH UrMYThNY VThShLChY 'aTh-'aYBY VYMLT VTh'aMUr MYKL 'aL-Sh'aVL HV'a-'aMUr 'aLY ShLChNY LMH 'aMYThK.     And Saul saith unto Michal, `Why thus hast thou deceived me -- that thou dost send away mine enemy, and he is escaped?` and Michal saith unto Saul, `He said unto me, Send me away: why do I put thee to death?`     dixitque Saul ad Michol quare sic inlusisti mihi et dimisisti inimicum meum ut fugeret et respondit Michol ad Saul quia ipse locutus est mihi dimitte me alioquin interficiam te
 
18.    Now David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. He and Samuel went and lived in Naioth.     So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.     ודוד  ברח  וימלט 
ויבא  אל־שמואל
הרמתה  ויגד־לו  את
כל־אשר  עשה־לו
שאול  וילך  הוא

    VDVD BUrCh VYMLT VYB'a 'aL-ShMV'aL HUrMThH VYGD-LV 'aTh KL-'aShUr 'yShH-LV Sh'aVL VYLK HV'a VShMV'aL VYShBV BNVYTh.     And David hath fled, and is escaped, and cometh in unto Samuel to Ramath, and declareth to him all that Saul hath done to him, and he goeth, he and Samuel, and they dwell in Naioth.     David autem fugiens salvatus est et venit ad Samuhel in Ramatha et nuntiavit ei omnia quae fecerat sibi Saul et abierunt ipse et Samuhel et morati sunt in Nahioth
 
19.    It was told Saul, saying, "Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah."     And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.     ויגד  לשאול  לאמר 
הנה  דוד  בנוית
ברמה׃
    VYGD LSh'aVL L'aMUr HNH DVD BNVYTh BUrMH.     And it is declared to Saul, saying, `Lo, David is in Naioth in Ramah.`     nuntiatum est autem Sauli a dicentibus ecce David in Nahioth in Rama
 
20.    Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, the Spirit of God came on the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.     And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.     וישלח  שאול  מלאכים 
לקחת  את־דוד  וירא
את־להקת  הנביאים
נבאים  ושמואל  עמד
נצב  עליהם  ותהי
על־מלאכי  שאול  רוח
אלהים  ויתנבאו  גם־
המה׃
    VYShLCh Sh'aVL ML'aKYM LQChTh 'aTh-DVD VYUr'a 'aTh-LHQTh HNBY'aYM NB'aYM VShMV'aL 'yMD NTShB 'yLYHM VThHY 'yL-ML'aKY Sh'aVL UrVCh 'aLHYM VYThNB'aV GM- HMH.     And Saul sendeth messengers to take David, and they see the assembly of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing, set over them, and the Spirit of God is on Saul`s messengers, and they prophesy -- they also.     misit ergo Saul lictores ut raperent David qui cum vidissent cuneum prophetarum vaticinantium et Samuhel stantem super eos factus est etiam in illis spiritus Domini et prophetare coeperunt etiam ipsi
 
21.    When it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they also prophesied. Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they also prophesied.     And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.     ויגדו  לשאול  וישלח 
מלאכים  אחרים
ויתנבאו  גם־המה
ויסף  שאול  וישלח
מלאכים  שלשים
ויתנבאו  גם־המה׃
    VYGDV LSh'aVL VYShLCh ML'aKYM 'aChUrYM VYThNB'aV GM-HMH VYSPh Sh'aVL VYShLCh ML'aKYM ShLShYM VYThNB'aV GM-HMH.     And they declare it to Saul, and he sendeth other messengers, and they prophesy -- they also; and Saul addeth and sendeth messengers a third time, and they prophesy -- they also.     quod cum nuntiatum esset Sauli misit alios nuntios prophetaverunt autem et illi et rursum Saul misit tertios nuntios qui et ipsi prophetaverunt
 
22.    Then went he also to Ramah, and came to the great well that is in Secu: and he asked, "Where are Samuel and David?" One said, "Behold, they are at Naioth in Ramah."     Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in Ramah.     וילך  גם־הוא  הרמתה 
ויבא  עד־בור  הגדול
אשר  בשכו  וישאל
ויאמר  איפה  שמואל
ודוד  ויאמר  הנה
בנוית  ברמה׃
    VYLK GM-HV'a HUrMThH VYB'a 'yD-BVUr HGDVL 'aShUr BShKV VYSh'aL VY'aMUr 'aYPhH ShMV'aL VDVD VY'aMUr HNH BNVYTh BUrMH.     And he goeth -- he also -- to Ramath, and cometh in unto the great well which is in Sechu, and asketh, and saith, `Where are Samuel and David?` and one saith, `Lo, in Naioth in Ramah.`     abiit autem etiam ipse in Ramatha et venit usque ad cisternam magnam quae est in Soccho et interrogavit et dixit in quo loco sunt Samuhel et David dictumque est ei ecce in Nahioth sunt in Rama
 
23.    He went there to Naioth in Ramah. Then the Spirit of God came on him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah.     And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah: and the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah.     וילך  שם  אל־נוית 
ברמה  ותהי  עליו
גם־הוא  רוח  אלהים
וילך  הלוך  ויתנבא
עד־באו  בנוית
ברמה׃
    VYLK ShM 'aL-NVYTh BUrMH VThHY 'yLYV GM-HV'a UrVCh 'aLHYM VYLK HLVK VYThNB'a 'yD-B'aV BNVYTh BUrMH.     And he goeth thither -- unto Naioth in Ramah, and the Spirit of God is upon him -- him also; and he goeth, going on, and he prophesyeth till his coming in to Naioth in Ramah,     et abiit in Nahioth in Rama et factus est etiam super eum spiritus Dei et ambulabat ingrediens et prophetabat usque dum veniret in Nahioth in Rama
 
24.    He also stripped off his clothes, and he also prophesied before Samuel, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"     And he stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets?     ויפשט  גם־הוא 
בגדיו  ויתנבא
גם־הוא  לפני  שמואל
ויפל  ערם  כל־היום
ההוא  וכל־הלילה
על־כן  יאמרו  הגם
שאול  בנביאם׃
    VYPhShT GM-HV'a BGDYV VYThNB'a GM-HV'a LPhNY ShMV'aL VYPhL 'yUrM KL-HYVM HHV'a VKL-HLYLH 'yL-KN Y'aMUrV HGM Sh'aVL BNBY'aM.     and he strippeth off -- he also -- his garments, and prophesieth -- he also -- before Samuel, and falleth down naked all that day and all the night; therefore they say, `Is Saul also among the prophets?`     et expoliavit se etiam ipse vestimentis suis et prophetavit cum ceteris coram Samuhel et cecidit nudus tota die illa et nocte unde et exivit proverbium num et Saul inter prophetas
