1.    טוב־רש  הולך  בתמו 
מעקש  שפתיו  והוא
כסיל׃
    Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.     Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is perverse in his lips and is a fool.     Better is the poor man whose ways are upright, than the man of wealth whose ways are twisted.
 
2.    גם  בלא־דעת  נפש 
לא־טוב  ואץ  ברגלים
חוטא׃
    Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.     It isn't good to have zeal without knowledge; nor being hasty with one's feet and missing the way.     Further, without knowledge desire is not good; and he who is over-quick in acting goes out of the right way.
 
3.    אולת  אדם  תסלף 
דרכו  ועל־יהוה
יזעף  לבו׃
    The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD.     The foolishness of man subverts his way; his heart rages against Yahweh.     By his foolish behaviour a man's ways are turned upside down, and his heart is bitter against the Lord.
 
4.    הון  יסיף  רעים 
רבים  ודל  מרעהו
יפרד׃
    Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.     Wealth adds many friends, but the poor is separated from his friend.     Wealth makes a great number of friends; but the poor man is parted from his friend.
 
5.    עד  שקרים  לא  ינקה 
ויפיח  כזבים  לא
ימלט׃
    A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.     A false witness shall not be unpunished. He who pours out lies shall not go free.     A false witness will not go without punishment, and the breather out of deceit will not go free.
 
6.    רבים  יחלו 
פני־נדיב  וכל־הרע
לאיש  מתן׃
    Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.     Many will entreat the favor of a ruler, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.     Great numbers will make attempts to get the approval of a ruler: and every man is the special friend of him who has something to give.
 
7.    כל  אחי־רש  שנאהו 
אף  כי  מרעהו  רחקו
ממנו  מרדף  אמרים
לא־המה׃
    All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.     All the relatives of the poor shun him: how much more do his friends avoid him! He pursues them with pleas, but they are gone.     All the brothers of the poor man are against him: how much more do his friends go far from him! ...
 
8.    קנה־לב  אהב  נפשו 
שמר  תבונה
למצא־טוב׃
    He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.     He who gets wisdom loves his own soul. He who keeps understanding shall find good.     He who gets wisdom has love for his soul: he who keeps good sense will get what is truly good.
 
9.    עד  שקרים  לא  ינקה 
ויפיח  כזבים  יאבד׃
    A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.     A false witness shall not be unpunished. He who utters lies shall perish.     A false witness will not go without punishment, and the breather out of deceit will be cut off.
 
10.    לא־נאוה  לכסיל 
תענוג  אף  כי־לעבד
משל  בשרים׃
    Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.     Delicate living is not appropriate for a fool, much less for a servant to have rule over princes.     Material comfort is not good for the foolish; much less for a servant to be put over rulers.
 
11.    שכל  אדם  האריך  אפו 
ותפארתו  עבר
על־פשע׃
    The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.     The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger. It is his glory to overlook an offense.     A man's good sense makes him slow to wrath, and the overlooking of wrongdoing is his glory.
 
12.    נהם  ככפיר  זעף  מלך 
וכטל  על־עשב
רצונו׃
    The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.     The king's wrath is like the roaring of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass.     The king's wrath is like the loud cry of a lion, but his approval is like dew on the grass.
 
13.    הות  לאביו  בן  כסיל 
ודלף  טרד  מדיני
אשה׃
    A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.     A foolish son is the calamity of his father. A wife's quarrels are a continual dripping.     A foolish son is the destruction of his father; and the bitter arguments of a wife are like drops of rain falling without end.
 
14.    בית  והון  נחלת 
אבות  ומיהוה  אשה
משכלת׃
    House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD.     House and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from Yahweh.     House and wealth are a heritage from fathers, but a wife with good sense is from the Lord.
 
15.    עצלה  תפיל  תרדמה 
ונפש  רמיה  תרעב׃
    Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.     Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep. The idle soul shall suffer hunger.     Hate of work sends deep sleep on a man: and he who has no industry will go without food.
 
16.    שמר  מצוה  שמר  נפשו 
בוזה  דרכיו  יומת׃
    He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.     He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, but he who is contemptuous in his ways shall die.     He who keeps the law keeps his soul; but death will be the fate of him who takes no note of the word.
 
17.    מלוה  יהוה  חונן  דל 
וגמלו  ישלם־לו׃
    He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.     He who has pity on the poor lends to Yahweh; he will reward him.     He who has pity on the poor gives to the Lord, and the Lord will give him his reward.
 
18.    יסר  בנך  כי־יש 
תקוה  ואל־המיתו
אל־תשא  נפשך׃
    Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.     Discipline your son, for there is hope; don't be a willing party to his death.     Give your son training while there is hope; let not your heart be purposing his death.
 
19.    גרל־חמה  נשא  ענש 
כי  אם־תציל  ועוד
תוסף׃
    A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.     A hot-tempered man must pay the penalty, for if you rescue him, you must do it again.     A man of great wrath will have to take his punishment: for if you get him out of trouble you will have to do it again.
 
20.    שמע  עצה  וקבל  מוסר 
למען  תחכם
באחריתך׃
    Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.     Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter end.     Let your ear be open to suggestion and take teaching, so that at the end you may be wise.
 
21.    רבות  מחשבות 
בלב־איש  ועצת  יהוה
היא  תקום׃
    There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.     There are many plans in a man's heart, but Yahweh's counsel will prevail.     A man's heart may be full of designs, but the purpose of the Lord is unchanging.
 
22.    תאות  אדם  חסדו 
וטוב־רש  מאיש  כזב׃
    The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.     That which makes a man to be desired is his kindness. A poor man is better than a liar.     The ornament of a man is his mercy, and a poor man is better than one who is false.
 
23.    יראת  יהוה  לחיים 
ושבע  ילין  בל־יפקד
רע׃
    The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.     The fear of Yahweh leads to life, then contentment; he rests and will not be touched by trouble.     The fear of the Lord gives life: and he who has it will have need of nothing; no evil will come his way.
 
24.    טמן  עצל  ידו  בצלחת 
גם־אל־פיהו  לא
ישיבנה׃
    A slothful man hideth his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.     The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.     The hater of work puts his hand deep into the basin, and will not even take it to his mouth again.
 
25.    לץ  תכה  ופתי  יערם 
והוכיח  לנבון  יבין
דעת׃
    Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.     Flog a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke one who has understanding, and he will gain knowledge.     When blows overtake the man of pride, the simple will get sense; say sharp words to the wise, and knowledge will be made clear to him.
 
26.    משדד־אב  יבריח  אם 
בן  מביש  ומחפיר׃
    He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.     He who robs his father and drives away his mother, is a son who causes shame and brings reproach.     He who is violent to his father, driving away his mother, is a son causing shame and a bad name.
 
27.    חדל־בני  לשמע  מוסר 
לשגות  מאמרי־דעת׃
    Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.     If you stop listening to instruction, my son, you will stray from the words of knowledge.     A son who no longer gives attention to teaching is turned away from the words of knowledge.
 
28.    עד  בליעל  יליץ 
משפט  ופי  רשעים
יבלע־און׃
    An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.     A corrupt witness mocks justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down iniquity.     A good-for-nothing witness makes sport of the judge's decision: and the mouth of evil-doers sends out evil like a stream.
 
29.    נכונו  ללצים  שפטים 
ומהלמות  לגו
כסילים׃
    Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.     Penalties are prepared for scoffers, and beatings for the backs of fools.     Rods are being made ready for the man of pride, and blows for the back of the foolish.
