| 2. | Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and tell them, When I bring the sword on a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman; | Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman: |
בן־אדם דבר אל־בני־עמך ואמרת אליהם ארץ כי־אביא עליה חרב ולקחו עם־הארץ איש אחד מקציהם ונתנו אתו להם לצפה׃ |
BN-'aDM DBUr 'aL-BNY-'yMK V'aMUrTh 'aLYHM 'aUrTSh KY-'aBY'a 'yLYH ChUrB VLQChV 'yM-H'aUrTSh 'aYSh 'aChD MQTShYHM VNThNV 'aThV LHM LTShPhH. | `Son of man, speak unto the sons of thy people, and thou hast said unto them: A land -- when I bring in against it a sword, And the people of the land have taken one man out of their borders, And made him to them for a watchman. | fili hominis loquere ad filios populi tui et dices ad eos terra cum induxero super eam gladium et tulerit populus terrae virum unum de novissimis suis et constituerit eum super se speculatorem | |||||

וראה את־החרב באה על־הארץ ותקע בשופר והזהיר את־העם׃ |
VUr'aH 'aTh-HChUrB B'aH 'yL-H'aUrTSh VThQ'y BShVPhUr VHZHYUr 'aTh-H'yM. | And he hath seen the sword coming against the land, And hath blown with a trumpet, and hath warned the people, | et ille viderit gladium venientem super terram et cecinerit bucina et adnuntiaverit populo | |||||
| 4. | then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet, and doesn't take warning, if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be on his own head. | Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. |
ושמע השמע את־קול השופר ולא נזהר ותבוא חרב ותקחהו דמו בראשו יהיה׃ |

| 5. | He heard the sound of the trumpet, and didn't take warning; his blood shall be on him; whereas if he had taken warning, he would have delivered his soul. | He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul. |
את קול השופר שמע ולא נזהר דמו בו יהיה והוא נזהר נפשו מלט׃ |

| 6. | But if the watchman sees the sword come, and doesn't blow the trumpet, and the people aren't warned, and the sword comes, and take any person from among them; he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand. | But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand. |
והצפה כי־יראה את־החרב באה ולא־תקע בשופר והעם לא־נזהר ותבוא חרב ותקח מהם נפש הוא בעונו נלקח ודמו מיד־הצפה אדרש׃ |
VHTShPhH KY-YUr'aH 'aTh-HChUrB B'aH VL'a-ThQ'y BShVPhUr VH'yM L'a-NZHUr VThBV'a ChUrB VThQCh MHM NPhSh HV'a B'yVNV NLQCh VDMV MYD-HTShPhH 'aDUrSh. | And the watchman, when he seeth the sword coming in, And he hath not blown with a trumpet, And the people hath not been warned, And come in doth a sword, And taketh away of them -- a soul, He in his iniquity is taken away, And his blood from the hand of the watchman I require. | quod si speculator viderit gladium venientem et non insonuerit bucina et populus non se custodierit veneritque gladius et tulerit de eis animam ille quidem in iniquitate sua captus est sanguinem autem eius de manu speculatoris requiram | |||||
| 7. | So you, son of man, I have set you a watchman to the house of Israel; therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. | So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. |
ואתה בן־אדם צפה נתתיך לבית ישראל ושמעת מפי דבר והזהרת אתם ממני׃ |
V'aThH BN-'aDM TShPhH NThThYK LBYTh YShUr'aL VShM'yTh MPhY DBUr VHZHUrTh 'aThM MMNY. | And thou, son of man, A watchman I gave thee to the house of Israel, And thou hast heard from My mouth a word, And thou hast warned them from Me. | et tu fili hominis speculatorem dedi te domui Israhel audiens ergo ex ore meo sermonem adnuntiabis eis ex me | |||||
| 8. | When I tell the wicked, O wicked man, you shall surely die, and you don't speak to warn the wicked from his way; that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at your hand. | When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. |

| 9. | Nevertheless, if you warn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he doesn't turn from his way; he shall die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul. | Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. |

| 10. | You, son of man, tell the house of Israel: Thus you speak, saying, Our transgressions and our sins are on us, and we pine away in them; how then can we live? | Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live? |
ואתה בן־אדם אמר אל־בית ישראל כן אמרתם לאמר כי־פשעינו וחטאתינו עלינו ובם אנחנו נמקים ואיך נחיה׃ |
V'aThH BN-'aDM 'aMUr 'aL-BYTh YShUr'aL KN 'aMUrThM L'aMUr KY-PhSh'yYNV VChT'aThYNV 'yLYNV VBM 'aNChNV NMQYM V'aYK NChYH. | And thou, son of man, say unto the house of Israel: Rightly ye have spoken, saying: Surely our transgressions and our sins are on us, And in them we are wasting away, How, then, do we live? | tu ergo fili hominis dic ad domum Israhel sic locuti estis dicentes iniquitates nostrae et peccata nostra super nos sunt et in ipsis nos tabescimus quomodo ergo vivere poterimus | |||||
| 11. | Tell them, As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn, turn from your evil ways; for why will you die, house of Israel? | Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? |
אמר אליהם חי־אני נאם אדני יהוה אם־אחפץ במות הרשע כי אם־בשוב רשע מדרכו וחיה שובו שובו מדרכיכם הרעים ולמה תמותו בית ישראל׃ |

| 12. | You, son of man, tell the children of your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his disobedience; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turns from his wickedness; neither shall he who is righteous be able to live thereby in the day that he sins. | Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth. |
ואתה בן־אדם אמר אל־בני־עמך צדקת הצדיק לא תצילנו ביום פשעו ורשעת הרשע לא־יכשל בה ביום שובו מרשעו וצדיק לא יוכל לחיות בה ביום חטאתו׃ |
V'aThH BN-'aDM 'aMUr 'aL-BNY-'yMK TShDQTh HTShDYQ L'a ThTShYLNV BYVM PhSh'yV VUrSh'yTh HUrSh'y L'a-YKShL BH BYVM ShVBV MUrSh'yV VTShDYQ L'a YVKL LChYVTh BH BYVM ChT'aThV. | And thou, son of man, say unto the sons of thy people: The righteousness of the righteous doth not deliver him in the day of his transgression, And the wickedness of the wicked, He doth not stumble for it in the day of his turning from his wickedness, And the righteous is not able to live in it in the day of his sinning. | tu itaque fili hominis dic ad filios populi tui iustitia iusti non liberabit eum in quacumque die peccaverit et impietas impii non nocebit ei in quacumque die conversus fuerit ab impietate sua et iustus non poterit vivere in iustitia sua in quacumque die peccaverit | |||||
| 13. | When I tell the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his righteousness, and commit iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but in his iniquity that he has committed, therein shall he die. | When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it. |
באמרי לצדיק חיה יחיה והוא־בטח על־צדקתו ועשה עול כל־צדקתו לא תזכרנה ובעולו אשר־עשה בו ימות׃ |
B'aMUrY LTShDYQ ChYH YChYH VHV'a-BTCh 'yL-TShDQThV V'yShH 'yVL KL-TShDQThV L'a ThZKUrNH VB'yVLV 'aShUr-'yShH BV YMVTh. | In My saying of the righteous: He surely liveth, And -- he hath trusted on his righteousness, And he hath done perversity, All his righteous acts are not remembered, And for his perversity that he hath done, For it he doth die. | etiam si dixero iusto quod vita vivat et confisus in iustitia sua fecerit iniquitatem omnes iustitiae eius oblivioni tradentur et in iniquitate sua quam operatus est in ipsa morietur | |||||
| 14. | Again, when I say to the wicked, You shall surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right; | Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right; |
ובאמרי לרשע מות תמות ושב מחטאתו ועשה משפט וצדקה׃ |
VB'aMUrY LUrSh'y MVTh ThMVTh VShB MChT'aThV V'yShH MShPhT VTShDQH. | And in My saying to the wicked: Thou surely diest, And -- he hath turned back from his sin, And hath done judgment and righteousness, | sin autem dixero impio morte morieris et egerit paenitentiam a peccato suo feceritque iudicium et iustitiam | |||||
| 15. | if the wicked restore the pledge, give again that which he had taken by robbery, walk in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. | If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. |
חבל ישיב רשע גזלה ישלם בחקות החיים הלך לבלתי עשות עול חיו יחיה לא ימות׃ |
ChBL YShYB UrSh'y GZLH YShLM BChQVTh HChYYM HLK LBLThY 'yShVTh 'yVL ChYV YChYH L'a YMVTh. | (The pledge the wicked restoreth, plunder he repayeth,) In the statutes of life he hath walked, So as not to do perversity, He surely liveth -- he doth not die. | pignus restituerit ille impius rapinamque reddiderit in mandatis vitae ambulaverit nec fecerit quicquam iniustum vita vivet et non morietur | |||||

| 17. | Yet the children of your people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal. | Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal. |
ואמרו בני עמך לא יתכן דרך אדני והמה דרכם לא־יתכן׃ |
V'aMUrV BNY 'yMK L'a YThKN DUrK 'aDNY VHMH DUrKM L'a-YThKN. | And the sons of thy people have said: The way of the Lord is not pondered, As to them -- their way is not pondered. | et dixerunt filii populi tui non est aequi ponderis via Domini et ipsorum via iniusta est | |||||
| 18. | When the righteous turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall even die therein. | When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby. |
בשוב־צדיק מצדקתו ועשה עול ומת בהם׃ |

| 21. | It happened in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth [month], in the fifth [day] of the month, that one who had escaped out of Jerusalem came to me, saying, The city has been struck. | And it came to pass in the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, that one that had escaped out of Jerusalem came unto me, saying, The city is smitten. |

VYD-YHVH HYThH 'aLY B'yUrB LPhNY BV'a HPhLYT VYPhThCh 'aTh-PhY 'yD-BV'a 'aLY BBQUr VYPhThCh PhY VL'a N'aLMThY 'yVD. | And the hand of Jehovah hath been unto me in the evening, before the coming in of the escaped one, and He openeth my mouth till the coming in unto me in the morning, and opened is my mouth, and I have not been silent again. | manus autem Domini facta fuerat ad me vespere antequam veniret qui fugerat aperuitque os meum donec veniret ad me mane et aperto ore meo non silui amplius | |||||

| 24. | Son of man, they who inhabit those waste places in the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance. | Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance. |
בן־אדם ישבי החרבות האלה על־אדמת ישראל אמרים לאמר אחד היה אברהם ויירש את־הארץ ואנחנו רבים לנו נתנה הארץ למורשה׃ |
BN-'aDM YShBY HChUrBVTh H'aLH 'yL-'aDMTh YShUr'aL 'aMUrYM L'aMUr 'aChD HYH 'aBUrHM VYYUrSh 'aTh-H'aUrTSh V'aNChNV UrBYM LNV NThNH H'aUrTSh LMVUrShH. | `Son of man, the inhabitants of these wastes on the ground of Israel are speaking, saying: Alone hath been Abraham -- and he possesseth the land, and we are many -- to us hath the land been given for a possession. | fili hominis qui habitant in ruinosis his super humum Israhel loquentes aiunt unus erat Abraham et hereditate possedit terram nos autem multi nobis data est terra in possessionem | |||||
| 25. | Therefore tell them, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: You eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood: and shall you possess the land? | Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land? |
לכן אמר אליהם כה־אמר אדני יהוה על־הדם תאכלו ועינכם תשאו אל־ גלוליכם ודם תשפכו והארץ תירשו׃ |
LKN 'aMUr 'aLYHM KH-'aMUr 'aDNY YHVH 'yL-HDM Th'aKLV V'yYNKM ThSh'aV 'aL- GLVLYKM VDM ThShPhKV VH'aUrTSh ThYUrShV. | Therefore say unto them: Thus said the Lord Jehovah: With the blood ye do eat, And your eyes ye lift up unto your idols, And blood ye shed, and the land ye inherit! | idcirco dices ad eos haec dicit Dominus Deus qui in sanguine comeditis et oculos vestros levatis ad inmunditias vestras et sanguinem funditis numquid terram hereditate possidebitis | |||||

| 27. | You shall tell them, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: As I live, surely those who are in the waste places shall fall by the sword; and him who is in the open field will I give to the animals to be devoured; and those who are in the strongholds and in the caves shall die of the pestilence. | Say thou thus unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; As I live, surely they that are in the wastes shall fall by the sword, and him that is in the open field will I give to the beasts to be devoured, and they that be in the forts and in the caves shall die of the pestilence. |

| 28. | I will make the land a desolation and an astonishment; and the pride of her power shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, so that none shall pass through. | For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through. |
ונתתי את־הארץ שממה ומשמה ונשבת גאון עזה ושממו הרי ישראל מאין עובר׃ |
VNThThY 'aTh-H'aUrTSh ShMMH VMShMH VNShBTh G'aVN 'yZH VShMMV HUrY YShUr'aL M'aYN 'yVBUr. | And I have made the land a desolation and an astonishment, And ceased hath the excellency of its strength, And desolated have been mountains of Israel, Without any one passing through. | et dabo terram in solitudinem et desertum et deficiet superba fortitudo eius et desolabuntur montes Israhel eo quod nullus sit qui per eos transeat | |||||
| 29. | Then shall they know that I am Yahweh, when I have made the land a desolation and an astonishment, because of all their abominations which they have committed. | Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed. |
וידעו כי־אני יהוה בתתי את־הארץ שממה ומשמה על כל־תועבתם אשר עשו׃ |
VYD'yV KY-'aNY YHVH BThThY 'aTh-H'aUrTSh ShMMH VMShMH 'yL KL-ThV'yBThM 'aShUr 'yShV. | And they have known that I am Jehovah, In My making the land a desolation and an astonishment, For all their abominations that they have done. | et scient quia ego Dominus cum dedero terram desolatam et desertam propter universas abominationes suas quas operati sunt | |||||
| 30. | As for you, son of man, the children of your people talk of you by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, everyone to his brother, saying, Please come and hear what is the word that comes forth from Yahweh. | Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD. |
ואתה בן־אדם בני עמך הנדברים בך אצל הקירות ובפתחי הבתים ודבר־ חד את־אחד איש את־אחיו לאמר באו־נא ושמעו מה הדבר היוצא מאת יהוה׃ |

| 31. | They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but don't do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their gain. | And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. |
ויבואו אליך כמבוא־עם וישבו לפניך עמי ושמעו את־דבריך ואותם לא יעשו כי־עגבים בפיהם המה עשים אחרי בצעם לבם הלך׃ |
VYBV'aV 'aLYK KMBV'a-'yM VYShBV LPhNYK 'yMY VShM'yV 'aTh-DBUrYK V'aVThM L'a Y'yShV KY-'yGBYM BPhYHM HMH 'yShYM 'aChUrY BTSh'yM LBM HLK. | And they come in unto thee as the coming in of a people, And they sit before thee -- My people, And have heard thy words, and they do them not, For doting loves with their mouth they are making, After their dishonest gain their heart is going. | et veniunt ad te quasi si ingrediatur populus et sedent coram te populus meus et audiunt sermones tuos et non faciunt eos quia in canticum oris sui vertunt illos et avaritiam suam sequitur cor eorum | |||||
| 32. | Behold, you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they don't do them. | And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not. |
והנך להם כשיר עגבים יפה קול ומטב נגן ושמעו את־דבריך ועשים אינם אותם׃ |
VHNK LHM KShYUr 'yGBYM YPhH QVL VMTB NGN VShM'yV 'aTh-DBUrYK V'yShYM 'aYNM 'aVThM. | And lo, thou art to them as a singer of doting loves, A pleasant voice, and playing well on an instrument, And they have heard thy words, and they are not doing them. | et es eis quasi carmen musicum quod suavi dulcique sono canitur et audient verba tua et non facient ea | |||||
| 33. | When this comes to pass, (behold, it comes), then shall they know that a prophet has been among them. | And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them. |
