    VYPhThCh HGL'yDY HYH GBVUr ChYL VHV'a BN-'aShH ZVNH VYVLD GL'yD 'aTh- YPhThCh.     And Jephthah the Gileadite hath been a mighty man of valour, and he is son of a woman, a harlot; and Gilead begetteth Jephthah,     fuit illo tempore Iepthae Galaadites vir fortissimus atque pugnator filius meretricis mulieris qui natus est de Galaad
 
2.    Gilead's wife bore him sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove out Jephthah, and said to him, "You shall not inherit in our father's house; for you are the son of another woman."     And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and his wife's sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.     ותלד  אשת־גלעד  לו 
בנים  ויגדלו
בני־האשה  ויגרשו
את־יפתח  ויאמרו  לו
לא־תנחל
בבית־אבינו  כי
בן־אשה  אחרת  אתה׃
    VThLD 'aShTh-GL'yD LV BNYM VYGDLV BNY-H'aShH VYGUrShV 'aTh-YPhThCh VY'aMUrV LV L'a-ThNChL BBYTh-'aBYNV KY BN-'aShH 'aChUrTh 'aThH.     and the wife of Gilead beareth to him sons, and the wife`s sons grow up and cast out Jephthah, and say to him, `Thou dost not inherit in the house of our father; for son of another woman art thou.`     habuit autem Galaad uxorem de qua suscepit filios qui postquam creverant eiecerunt Iepthae dicentes heres in domo patris nostri esse non poteris quia de altera matre generatus es
 
3.    Then Jephthah fled from his brothers, and lived in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain fellows to Jephthah, and they went out with him.     Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.     ויברח  יפתח  מפני 
אחיו  וישב  בארץ
טוב  ויתלקטו
אל־יפתח  אנשים
ריקים  ויצאו  עמו׃
    VYBUrCh YPhThCh MPhNY 'aChYV VYShB B'aUrTSh TVB VYThLQTV 'aL-YPhThCh 'aNShYM UrYQYM VYTSh'aV 'yMV.     And Jephthah fleeth from the face of his brethren, and dwelleth in the land of Tob; and vain men gather themselves together unto Jephthah, and they go out with him.     quos ille fugiens atque devitans habitavit in terra Tob congregatique sunt ad eum viri inopes et latrocinantes et quasi principem sequebantur
 
4.    It happened after a while, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.     And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.     ויהי  מימים  וילחמו 
בני־עמון
עם־ישראל׃
    VYHY MYMYM VYLChMV BNY-'yMVN 'yM-YShUr'aL.     And it cometh to pass, after a time, that the Bene-Ammon fight with Israel,     in illis diebus pugnabant filii Ammon contra Israhel
 
5.    It was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah out of the land of Tob;     And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:     ויהי  כאשר־נלחמו 
בני־עמון  עם־ישראל
וילכו  זקני  גלעד
לקחת  את־  יפתח
מארץ  טוב׃
    VYHY K'aShUr-NLChMV BNY-'yMVN 'yM-YShUr'aL VYLKV ZQNY GL'yD LQChTh 'aTh- YPhThCh M'aUrTSh TVB.     and it cometh to pass, when the Bene-Ammon have fought with Israel, that the elders of Gilead go to take Jephthah from the land of Tob;     quibus acriter instantibus perrexerunt maiores natu de Galaad ut tollerent in auxilium sui Iepthae de terra Tob
 
6.    and they said to Jephthah, "Come and be our chief, that we may fight with the children of Ammon."     And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.     ויאמרו  ליפתח  לכה 
והייתה  לנו  לקצין
ונלחמה  בבני  עמון׃
    VY'aMUrV LYPhThCh LKH VHYYThH LNV LQTShYN VNLChMH BBNY 'yMVN.     and they say unto Jephthah, `Come, and thou hast been to us for captain, and we fight against the Bene-Ammon.`     dixeruntque ad eum veni et esto princeps noster et pugna contra filios Ammon
 
7.    Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "Didn't you hate me, and drive me out of my father's house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?"     And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?     ויאמר  יפתח  לזקני 
גלעד  הלא  אתם
שנאתם  אותי
ותגרשוני  מבית  אבי
ומדוע  באתם  אלי
עתה  כאשר  צר  לכם׃
    VY'aMUr YPhThCh LZQNY GL'yD HL'a 'aThM ShN'aThM 'aVThY VThGUrShVNY MBYTh 'aBY VMDV'y B'aThM 'aLY 'yThH K'aShUr TShUr LKM.     And Jephthah saith to the elders of Gilead, `Have not ye hated me? and ye cast me out from the house of my father, and wherefore have ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?`     quibus ille respondit nonne vos estis qui odistis me et eiecistis de domo patris mei et nunc venistis ad me necessitate conpulsi
 
8.    The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us, and fight with the children of Ammon; and you shall be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead."     And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.     ויאמרו  זקני  גלעד 
אל־יפתח  לכן  עתה
שבנו  אליך  והלכת
עמנו  ונלחמת  בבני
עמון  והיית  לנו
לראש  לכל  ישבי
גלעד׃
    VY'aMUrV ZQNY GL'yD 'aL-YPhThCh LKN 'yThH ShBNV 'aLYK VHLKTh 'yMNV VNLChMTh BBNY 'yMVN VHYYTh LNV LUr'aSh LKL YShBY GL'yD.     and the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Therefore, now, we have turned back unto thee; and thou hast gone with us, and fought against the Bene-Ammon, and thou hast been to us for head -- to all the inhabitants of Gilead.`     dixeruntque principes Galaad ad Iepthae ob hanc igitur causam nunc ad te venimus ut proficiscaris nobiscum et pugnes contra filios Ammon sisque dux omnium qui habitant in Galaad
 
9.    Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, "If you bring me home again to fight with the children of Ammon, and Yahweh deliver them before me, shall I be your head?"     And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?     ויאמר  יפתח 
אל־זקני  גלעד
אם־משיבים  אתם
אותי  להלחם  בבני
עמון  ונתן  יהוה
אותם  לפני  אנכי
אהיה  לכם  לראש׃
    VY'aMUr YPhThCh 'aL-ZQNY GL'yD 'aM-MShYBYM 'aThM 'aVThY LHLChM BBNY 'yMVN VNThN YHVH 'aVThM LPhNY 'aNKY 'aHYH LKM LUr'aSh.     And Jephthah saith unto the elders of Gilead, `If ye are taking me back to fight against the Bene-Ammon, and Jehovah hath given them before me -- I, am I to you for a head?`     Iepthae quoque dixit eis si vere venistis ad me ut pugnem pro vobis contra filios Ammon tradideritque eos Dominus in manus meas ego ero princeps vester
 
10.    The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "Yahweh shall be witness between us; surely according to your word so will we do."     And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.     ויאמרו  זקני־גלעד 
אל־יפתח  יהוה  יהיה
שמע  בינותינו
אם־לא  כדברך  כן
נעשה׃
    VY'aMUrV ZQNY-GL'yD 'aL-YPhThCh YHVH YHYH ShM'y BYNVThYNV 'aM-L'a KDBUrK KN N'yShH.     And the elders of Gilead say unto Jephthah, `Jehovah is hearkening between us -- if according to thy word we do not so.`     qui responderunt ei Dominus qui haec audit ipse mediator ac testis est quod nostra promissa faciamus
 
11.    Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them: and Jephthah spoke all his words before Yahweh in Mizpah.     Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.     וילך  יפתח  עם־זקני 
גלעד  וישימו  העם
אותו  עליהם  לראש
ולקצין  וידבר  יפתח
את־כל־דבריו  לפני
יהוה  במצפה׃
    VYLK YPhThCh 'yM-ZQNY GL'yD VYShYMV H'yM 'aVThV 'yLYHM LUr'aSh VLQTShYN VYDBUr YPhThCh 'aTh-KL-DBUrYV LPhNY YHVH BMTShPhH.     And Jephthah goeth with the elders of Gilead, and the people set him over them for head and for captain, and Jephthah speaketh all his words before Jehovah in Mizpeh.     abiit itaque Iepthae cum principibus Galaad fecitque eum omnis populus principem sui locutusque est Iepthae omnes sermones suos coram Domino in Maspha
 
12.    Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the children of Ammon, saying, "What have you to do with me, that you have come to me to fight against my land?"     And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?     וישלח  יפתח  מלאכים 
אל־מלך  בני־עמון
לאמר  מה־לי  ולך
כי־באת  אלי  להלחם
בארצי׃
    VYShLCh YPhThCh ML'aKYM 'aL-MLK BNY-'yMVN L'aMUr MH-LY VLK KY-B'aTh 'aLY LHLChM B'aUrTShY.     And Jephthah sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon, saying, `What -- to me and to thee, that thou hast come in unto me, to fight in my land.`     et misit nuntios ad regem filiorum Ammon qui ex persona sua dicerent quid mihi et tibi est quia venisti contra me ut vastares terram meam
 
13.    The king of the children of Ammon answered to the messengers of Jephthah, "Because Israel took away my land, when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan: now therefore restore those [lands] again peaceably."     And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.     ויאמר  מלך 
בני־עמון  אל־מלאכי
יפתח  כי־לקח  ישראל
את־ארצי  בעלותו
ממצרים  מארנון
ועד־היבק
ועד־הירדן  ועתה
השיבה  אתהן  בשלום׃
    VY'aMUr MLK BNY-'yMVN 'aL-ML'aKY YPhThCh KY-LQCh YShUr'aL 'aTh-'aUrTShY B'yLVThV MMTShUrYM M'aUrNVN V'yD-HYBQ V'yD-HYUrDN V'yThH HShYBH 'aThHN BShLVM.     And the king of the Bene-Ammon saith unto the messengers of Jephthah, `Because Israel took my land in his coming up out of Egypt, from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and unto the Jordan; and now, restore them in peace.`     quibus ille respondit quia tulit Israhel terram meam quando ascendit de Aegypto a finibus Arnon usque Iaboc atque Iordanem nunc igitur cum pace redde mihi eam
 
14.    Jephthah sent messengers again to the king of the children of Ammon;     And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:     ויוסף  עוד  יפתח 
וישלח  מלאכים
אל־מלך  בני  עמון׃
    VYVSPh 'yVD YPhThCh VYShLCh ML'aKYM 'aL-MLK BNY 'yMVN.     And Jephthah addeth yet and sendeth messengers unto the king of the Bene-Ammon,     per quos rursum mandavit Iepthae et imperavit eis ut dicerent regi Ammon
 
15.    and he said to him, "Thus says Jephthah: Israel didn't take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon,     And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:     ויאמר  לו  כה  אמר 
יפתח  לא־לקח  ישראל
את־ארץ  מואב
ואת־ארץ  בני  עמון׃
    VY'aMUr LV KH 'aMUr YPhThCh L'a-LQCh YShUr'aL 'aTh-'aUrTSh MV'aB V'aTh-'aUrTSh BNY 'yMVN.     and saith to him, `Thus said Jephthah, Israel took not the land of Moab, and the land of the Bene-Ammon,     haec dicit Iepthae non tulit Israhel terram Moab nec terram filiorum Ammon
 
16.    but when they came up from Egypt, and Israel went through the wilderness to the Red Sea{or, Sea of Reeds}, and came to Kadesh;     But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;     כי  בעלותם  ממצרים 
וילך  ישראל  במדבר
עד־ים־סוף  ויבא
קדשה׃
    KY B'yLVThM MMTShUrYM VYLK YShUr'aL BMDBUr 'yD-YM-SVPh VYB'a QDShH.     for in their coming up out of Egypt, Israel goeth in the wilderness unto the Red Sea, and cometh in to Kadesh,     sed quando de Aegypto conscenderunt ambulavit per solitudinem usque ad mare Rubrum et venit in Cades
 
17.    then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, 'Please let me pass through your land;' but the king of Edom didn't listen. In the same way, he sent to the king of Moab; but he would not: and Israel abode in Kadesh.     Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.     וישלח  ישראל 
מלאכים  אל־מלך
אדום  לאמר
אעברה־נא  בארצך
ולא  שמע  מלך  אדום
וגם  אל־מלך  מואב
שלח  ולא  אבה  וישב
ישראל  בקדש׃
    VYShLCh YShUr'aL ML'aKYM 'aL-MLK 'aDVM L'aMUr 'a'yBUrH-N'a B'aUrTShK VL'a ShM'y MLK 'aDVM VGM 'aL-MLK MV'aB ShLCh VL'a 'aBH VYShB YShUr'aL BQDSh.     and Israel sendeth messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me pass over, I pray thee, through thy land, and the king of Edom hearkened not; and also unto the king of Moab hath Israel sent, and he hath not been willing; and Israel abideth in Kadesh,     misitque nuntios ad regem Edom dicens dimitte ut transeam per terram tuam qui noluit adquiescere precibus eius misit quoque et ad regem Moab qui et ipse transitum praebere contempsit mansit itaque in Cades
 
18.    Then they went through the wilderness, and went around the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and they encamped on the other side of the Arnon; but they didn't come within the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab.     Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.     וילך  במדבר  ויסב 
את־ארץ  אדום
ואת־ארץ  מואב  ויבא
ממזרח־שמש  לארץ
מואב  ויחנון  בעבר
ארנון  ולא־באו
בגבול  מואב  כי

    VYLK BMDBUr VYSB 'aTh-'aUrTSh 'aDVM V'aTh-'aUrTSh MV'aB VYB'a MMZUrCh-ShMSh L'aUrTSh MV'aB VYChNVN B'yBUr 'aUrNVN VL'a-B'aV BGBVL MV'aB KY 'aUrNVN GBVL MV'aB.     and he goeth through the wilderness, and compasseth the land of Edom and the land of Moab, and cometh in at the rising of the sun of the land of Moab, and they encamp beyond Arnon, and have not come into the border of Moab, for Arnon is the border of Moab.     et circuivit ex latere terram Edom et terram Moab venitque contra orientalem plagam terrae Moab et castrametatus est trans Arnon nec voluit intrare terminos Moab Arnon quippe confinium est terrae Moab
 
19.    Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, 'Let us pass, please, through your land to my place.'     And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.     וישלח  ישראל 
מלאכים  אל־סיחון
מלך־האמרי  מלך
חשבון  ויאמר  לו
ישראל  נעברה־נא
בארצך  עד־מקומי׃
    VYShLCh YShUr'aL ML'aKYM 'aL-SYChVN MLK-H'aMUrY MLK ChShBVN VY'aMUr LV YShUr'aL N'yBUrH-N'a B'aUrTShK 'yD-MQVMY.     `And Israel sendeth messengers unto Sihon, king of the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and Israel saith to him, Let us pass over, we pray thee, through thy land, unto my place,     misit itaque Israhel nuntios ad Seon regem Amorreorum qui habitabat in Esebon et dixerunt ei dimitte ut transeam per terram tuam usque ad fluvium
 
20.    But Sihon didn't trust Israel to pass through his border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.     But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.     ולא־האמין  סיחון 
את־ישראל  עבר
בגבלו  ויאסף  סיחון
את־כל־עמו  ויחנו
ביהצה  וילחם
עם־ישראל׃
    VL'a-H'aMYN SYChVN 'aTh-YShUr'aL 'yBUr BGBLV VY'aSPh SYChVN 'aTh-KL-'yMV VYChNV BYHTShH VYLChM 'yM-YShUr'aL.     and Sihon hath not trusted Israel to pass over through his border, and Sihon gathereth all his people, and they encamp in Jahaz, and fight with Israel;     qui et ipse Israhel verba despiciens non dimisit eum transire per terminos suos sed infinita multitudine congregata egressus est contra eum in Iassa et fortiter resistebat
 
21.    Yahweh, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they struck them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.     And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.     ויתן  יהוה 
אלהי־ישראל
את־סיחון
ואת־כל־עמו  ביד
ישראל  ויכום  ויירש
ישראל  את  כל־ארץ
האמרי  יושב  הארץ
ההיא׃
    VYThN YHVH 'aLHY-YShUr'aL 'aTh-SYChVN V'aTh-KL-'yMV BYD YShUr'aL VYKVM VYYUrSh YShUr'aL 'aTh KL-'aUrTSh H'aMUrY YVShB H'aUrTSh HHY'a.     and Jehovah, God of Israel, giveth Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smite them, and Israel possesseth all the land of the Amorite, the inhabitant of that land,     tradiditque eum Dominus in manu Israhel cum omni exercitu suo qui percussit eum et possedit omnem terram Amorrei habitatoris regionis illius
 
22.    They possessed all the border of the Amorites, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and from the wilderness even to the Jordan.     And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.     ויירשו  את  כל־גבול 
האמרי  מארנון
ועד־היבק
ומן־המדבר
ועד־הירדן׃
    VYYUrShV 'aTh KL-GBVL H'aMUrY M'aUrNVN V'yD-HYBQ VMN-HMDBUr V'yD-HYUrDN.     and they possess all the border of the Amorite from Arnon, and unto the Jabbok, and from the wilderness, and unto the Jordan.     et universos fines eius de Arnon usque Iaboc et de solitudine usque ad Iordanem
 
23.    So now Yahweh, the God of Israel, has dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and should you possess them?     So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?     ועתה  יהוה  אלהי 
ישראל  הוריש

ישראל  ואתה
תירשנו׃
    V'yThH YHVH 'aLHY YShUr'aL HVUrYSh 'aTh-H'aMUrY MPhNY 'yMV YShUr'aL V'aThH ThYUrShNV.     `And now, Jehovah, God of Israel, hath dispossessed the Amorite from the presence of His people Israel, and thou wouldst possess it!     Dominus ergo Deus Israhel subvertit Amorreum pugnante contra illum populo suo Israhel et tu nunc vis possidere terram eius
 
24.    Won't you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever Yahweh our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.     Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.     הלא  את  אשר  יורישך 
כמוש  אלהיך  אותו
תירש  ואת  כל־אשר
הוריש  יהוה  אלהינו
מפנינו  אותו  נירש׃
    HL'a 'aTh 'aShUr YVUrYShK KMVSh 'aLHYK 'aVThV ThYUrSh V'aTh KL-'aShUr HVUrYSh YHVH 'aLHYNV MPhNYNV 'aVThV NYUrSh.     That which Chemosh thy god causeth thee to possess -- dost thou not possess it? and all that which Jehovah our God hath dispossessed from our presence, -- it we do possess.     nonne ea quae possedit Chamos deus tuus tibi iure debentur quae autem Dominus Deus noster victor obtinuit in nostram cedent possessionem
 
25.    Now are you anything better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them?     And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,     ועתה  הטוב  טוב  אתה

נלחם  בם׃
    V'yThH HTVB TVB 'aThH MBLQ BN-TShPhVUr MLK MV'aB HUrVB UrB 'yM-YShUr'aL 'aM- NLChM NLChM BM.     `And now, art thou at all better than Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he at all strive with Israel? did he at all fight against them?     nisi forte melior es Balac filio Sepphor rege Moab aut docere potes quod iurgatus sit contra Israhel et pugnaverit contra eum
 
26.    While Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along by the side of the Arnon, three hundred years; why didn't you recover them within that time?     While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?     בשבת  ישראל  בחשבון

    BShBTh YShUr'aL BChShBVN VBBNVThYH VB'yUr'yVUr VBBNVThYH VBKL-H'yUrYM 'aShUr 'yL-YDY 'aUrNVN ShLSh M'aVTh ShNH VMDV'y L'a-HTShLThM B'yTh HHY'a.     In Israel`s dwelling in Heshbon and in its towns, and in Aroer and in its towns, and in all the cities which are by the sides of Arnon three hundred years -- and wherefore have ye not delivered them in that time?     quando habitavit in Esebon et viculis eius et in Aroer et villis illius vel in cunctis civitatibus iuxta Iordanem per trecentos annos quare tanto tempore nihil super hac repetitione temptastis
 
27.    I therefore have not sinned against you, but you do me wrong to war against me. Yahweh, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon."     Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.     ואנכי  לא־חטאתי  לך 
ואתה  עשה  אתי  רעה
להלחם  בי  ישפט
יהוה  השפט  היום
בין  בני  ישראל
ובין  בני  עמון׃
    V'aNKY L'a-ChT'aThY LK V'aThH 'yShH 'aThY Ur'yH LHLChM BY YShPhT YHVH HShPhT HYVM BYN BNY YShUr'aL VBYN BNY 'yMVN.     And I -- I have not sinned against thee, and thou art doing with me evil -- to fight against me. Jehovah, the Judge, doth judge to-day between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.`     igitur non ego pecco in te sed tu contra me male agis indicens mihi bella non iusta iudicet Dominus arbiter huius diei inter Israhel et inter filios Ammon
 
28.    However the king of the children of Ammon didn't listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.     Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.     ולא  שמע  מלך  בני 
עמון  אל־דברי  יפתח
אשר  שלח  אליו׃
    VL'a ShM'y MLK BNY 'yMVN 'aL-DBUrY YPhThCh 'aShUr ShLCh 'aLYV.     And the king of the Bene-Ammon hath not hearkened unto the words of Jephthah which he sent unto him,     noluitque adquiescere rex filiorum Ammon verbis Iepthae quae per nuntios mandaverat
 
29.    Then the Spirit of Yahweh came on Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over to the children of Ammon.     Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.     ותהי  על־יפתח  רוח 
יהוה  ויעבר
את־הגלעד  ואת־מנשה

30.    Jephthah vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, "If you will indeed deliver the children of Ammon into my hand,     And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,     וידר  יפתח  נדר 
ליהוה  ויאמר
אם־נתון  תתן
את־בני  עמון  בידי׃
    VYDUr YPhThCh NDUr LYHVH VY'aMUr 'aM-NThVN ThThN 'aTh-BNY 'yMVN BYDY.     And Jephthah voweth a vow to Jehovah, and saith, `If Thou dost at all give the Bene-Ammon into my hand --     votum vovit Domino dicens si tradideris filios Ammon in manus meas
 
31.    then it shall be, that whatever comes forth from the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, it shall be Yahweh's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering."     Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.     והיה  היוצא  אשר 
יצא  מדלתי  ביתי
לקראתי  בשובי
בשלום  מבני  עמון
והיה  ליהוה
והעליתהו  עולה׃
    VHYH HYVTSh'a 'aShUr YTSh'a MDLThY BYThY LQUr'aThY BShVBY BShLVM MBNY 'yMVN VHYH LYHVH VH'yLYThHV 'yVLH.     then it hath been, that which at all cometh out from the doors of my house to meet me in my turning back in peace from the Bene-Ammon -- it hath been to Jehovah, or I have offered up for it -- a burnt-offering.`     quicumque primus fuerit egressus de foribus domus meae mihique occurrerit revertenti cum pace a filiis Ammon eum holocaustum offeram Domino
 
32.    So Jephthah passed over to the children of Ammon to fight against them; and Yahweh delivered them into his hand.     So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.     ויעבר  יפתח  אל־בני 
עמון  להלחם  בם
ויתנם  יהוה  בידו׃
    VY'yBUr YPhThCh 'aL-BNY 'yMVN LHLChM BM VYThNM YHVH BYDV.     And Jephthah passeth over unto the Bene-Ammon to fight against them, and Jehovah giveth them into his hand,     transivitque Iepthae ad filios Ammon ut pugnaret contra eos quos tradidit Dominus in manus eius
 
33.    He struck them from Aroer until you come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and to Abelcheramim, with a very great slaughter. So the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.     And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.     ויכם  מערוער

    VYKM M'yUrV'yUr V'yD-BV'aK MNYTh 'yShUrYM 'yYUr V'yD 'aBL KUrMYM MKH GDVLH M'aD VYKN'yV BNY 'yMVN MPhNY BNY YShUr'aL.     and he smiteth them from Aroer, and unto thy going in to Minnith, twenty cities, and unto the meadow of the vineyards -- a very great smiting; and the Bene-Ammon are humbled at the presence of the sons of Israel.     percussitque ab Aroer usque dum venias in Mennith viginti civitates et usque ad Abel quae est vineis consita plaga magna nimis humiliatique sunt filii Ammon a filiis Israhel
 
34.    Jephthah came to Mizpah to his house; and behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances: and she was his only child; besides her he had neither son nor daughter.     And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.     ויבא  יפתח  המצפה

35.    It happened, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, "Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to Yahweh, and I can't go back."     And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.     ויהי  כראותו  אותה 
ויקרע  את־בגדיו
ויאמר  אהה  בתי
הכרע  הכרעתני  ואת
היית  בעכרי  ואנכי
פציתי־פי  אל־יהוה
ולא  אוכל  לשוב׃
    VYHY KUr'aVThV 'aVThH VYQUr'y 'aTh-BGDYV VY'aMUr 'aHH BThY HKUr'y HKUr'yThNY V'aTh HYYTh B'yKUrY V'aNKY PhTShYThY-PhY 'aL-YHVH VL'a 'aVKL LShVB.     And it cometh to pass, when he seeth her, that he rendeth his garments, and saith, `Alas, my daughter, thou hast caused me greatly to bend, and thou hast been among those troubling me; and I -- I have opened my mouth unto Jehovah, and I am not able to turn back.`     qua visa scidit vestimenta sua et ait heu filia mi decepisti me et ipsa decepta es aperui enim os meum ad Dominum et aliud facere non potero
 
36.    She said to him, "My father, you have opened your mouth to Yahweh; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because Yahweh has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon."     And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.     ותאמר  אליו  אבי 
פציתה  את־פיך
אל־יהוה  עשה  לי
כאשר  יצא  מפיך
אחרי  אשר  עשה  לך
יהוה  נקמות  מאיביך
מבני  עמון׃
    VTh'aMUr 'aLYV 'aBY PhTShYThH 'aTh-PhYK 'aL-YHVH 'yShH LY K'aShUr YTSh'a MPhYK 'aChUrY 'aShUr 'yShH LK YHVH NQMVTh M'aYBYK MBNY 'yMVN.     And she saith unto him, `My father -- thou hast opened thy mouth unto Jehovah, do to me as it hath gone out from thy mouth, after that Jehovah hath done for thee vengeance on thine enemies, on the Bene-Ammon.`     cui illa respondit pater mi si aperuisti os tuum ad Dominum fac mihi quodcumque pollicitus es concessa tibi ultione atque victoria de hostibus tuis
 
37.    She said to her father, "Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions."     And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.     ותאמר  אל־אביה 
יעשה  לי  הדבר  הזה
הרפה  ממני  שנים
חדשים  ואלכה
וירדתי  על־ההרים
ואבכה  על־בתולי
אנכי  ורעיתי׃
    VTh'aMUr 'aL-'aBYH Y'yShH LY HDBUr HZH HUrPhH MMNY ShNYM ChDShYM V'aLKH VYUrDThY 'yL-HHUrYM V'aBKH 'yL-BThVLY 'aNKY VUr'yYThY.     And she saith unto her father, `Let this thing be done to me; desist from me two months, and I go on, and have gone down on the hills, and I weep for my virginity -- I and my friends.`     dixitque ad patrem hoc solum mihi praesta quod deprecor dimitte me ut duobus mensibus circumeam montes et plangam virginitatem meam cum sodalibus meis
 
38.    He said, "Go." He sent her away for two months: and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains.     And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.     ויאמר  לכי  וישלח

39.    It happened at the end of two months, that she returned to her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she was a virgin.
