2.    Her father said, "I most certainly thought that you had utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Isn't her younger sister more beautiful than she? Please take her, instead."     And her father said, I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger sister fairer than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her.     ויאמר  אביה  אמר 
אמרתי  כי־שנא
שנאתה  ואתננה
למרעך  הלא  אחתה
הקטנה  טובה  ממנה
תהי־נא  לך  תחתיה׃
    VY'aMUr 'aBYH 'aMUr 'aMUrThY KY-ShN'a ShN'aThH V'aThNNH LMUr'yK HL'a 'aChThH HQTNH TVBH MMNH ThHY-N'a LK ThChThYH.     and her father saith, I certainly said, that thou didst certainly hate her, and I give her to thy companion; is not her sister -- the young one -- better than she? Let her be, I pray thee, to thee, instead of her.`     putavi quod odisses eam et ideo tradidi illam amico tuo sed habet sororem quae iunior et pulchrior illa est sit tibi pro ea uxor
 
3.    Samson said to them, "This time I will be blameless in regard of the Philistines, when I harm them."     And Samson said concerning them, Now shall I be more blameless than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure.     ויאמר  להם  שמשון

    VYLK ShMShVN VYLKD ShLSh-M'aVTh ShV'yLYM VYQCh LPhDYM VYPhN ZNB 'aL-ZNB VYShM LPhYD 'aChD BYN-ShNY HZNBVTh BThVK.     And Samson goeth and catcheth three hundred foxes, and taketh torches, and turneth tail unto tail, and putteth a torch between the two tails, in the midst,     perrexitque et cepit trecentas vulpes caudasque earum iunxit ad caudas et faces ligavit in medio

    VYB'yUr-'aSh BLPhYDYM VYShLCh BQMVTh PhLShThYM VYB'yUr MGDYSh V'yD-QMH V'yD- KUrM ZYTh.     and kindleth fire in the torches, and sendeth them out into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burneth it from heap even unto standing corn, even unto vineyard -- olive-yard.     quas igne succendens dimisit ut huc illucque discurrerent quae statim perrexerunt in segetes Philisthinorum quibus succensis et conportatae iam fruges et adhuc stantes in stipula concrematae sunt in tantum ut vineas quoque et oliveta flamma consumeret
 
6.    Then the Philistines said, "Who has done this?" They said, "Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife, and given her to his companion." The Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.     Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? And they answered, Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father with fire.     ויאמרו  פלשתים  מי 
עשה  זאת  ויאמרו
שמשון  חתן  התמני
כי  לקח  את־  אשתו
ויתנה  למרעהו
ויעלו  פלשתים
וישרפו  אותה
ואת־אביה  באש׃
    VY'aMUrV PhLShThYM MY 'yShH Z'aTh VY'aMUrV ShMShVN ChThN HThMNY KY LQCh 'aTh- 'aShThV VYThNH LMUr'yHV VY'yLV PhLShThYM VYShUrPhV 'aVThH V'aTh-'aBYH B'aSh.     And the Philistines say, `Who hath done this?` And they say, `Samson, son-in-law of the Timnite, because he hath taken away his wife, and giveth her to his companion;` and the Philistines go up, and burn her and her father with fire.     dixeruntque Philisthim quis fecit hanc rem quibus dictum est Samson gener Thamnathei quia tulit uxorem eius et alteri tradidit haec operatus est ascenderuntque Philisthim et conbuserunt tam mulierem quam patrem eius
 
7.    Samson said to them, "If you behave like this, surely I will be avenged of you, and after that I will cease."     And Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, yet will I be avenged of you, and after that I will cease.     ויאמר  להם  שמשון

אם־נקמתי  בכם  ואחר

    VY'aMUr LHM ShMShVN 'aM-Th'yShVN KZ'aTh KY 'aM-NQMThY BKM V'aChUr 'aChDL.     And Samson saith to them, `Though ye do thus, nevertheless I am avenged on you, and afterwards I cease!`     quibus ait Samson licet haec feceritis tamen adhuc ex vobis expetam ultionem et tunc quiescam
 
8.    He struck them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and lived in the cleft of the rock of Etam.     And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam.     ויך  אותם  שוק 
על־ירך  מכה  גדולה
וירד  וישב  בסעיף
סלע  עיטם׃
    VYK 'aVThM ShVQ 'yL-YUrK MKH GDVLH VYUrD VYShB BS'yYPh SL'y 'yYTM.     And he smiteth them hip and thigh -- a great smiting, and goeth down and dwelleth in the cleft of the rock Etam.     percussitque eos ingenti plaga ita ut stupentes suram femori inponerent et descendens habitavit in spelunca petrae Aetham
 
9.    Then the Philistines went up, and encamped in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.     Then the Philistines went up, and pitched in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi.     ויעלו  פלשתים 
ויחנו  ביהודה
וינטשו  בלחי׃
    VY'yLV PhLShThYM VYChNV BYHVDH VYNTShV BLChY.     And the Philistines go up, and encamp in Judah, and are spread out in Lehi,     igitur ascendentes Philisthim in terra Iuda castrametati sunt et in loco qui postea vocatus est Lehi id est Maxilla eorum est fusus exercitus
 
10.    The men of Judah said, "Why have you come up against us?" They said, "We have come up to bind Samson, to do to him as he has done to us."     And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.     ויאמרו  איש  יהודה 
למה  עליתם  עלינו
ויאמרו  לאסור
את־שמשון  עלינו
לעשות  לו  כאשר  עשה
לנו׃
    VY'aMUrV 'aYSh YHVDH LMH 'yLYThM 'yLYNV VY'aMUrV L'aSVUr 'aTh-ShMShVN 'yLYNV L'yShVTh LV K'aShUr 'yShH LNV.     and the men of Judah say, `Why have ye come up against us?` and they say, `To bind Samson we have come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.`     dixeruntque ad eos de tribu Iuda cur ascendistis adversum nos qui responderunt ut ligemus Samson venimus et reddamus ei quae in nos operatus est
 
11.    Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, "Don't you know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?" He said to them, "As they did to me, so have I done to them."     Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.     וירדו  שלשת  אלפים

אל־סעיף  סלע  עיטם
ויאמרו  לשמשון  הלא
ידעת  כי־משלים  בנו
פלשתים  ומה־זאת
עשית  לנו  ויאמר
להם  כאשר  עשו  לי
כן  עשיתי  להם׃
    VYUrDV ShLShTh 'aLPhYM 'aYSh MYHVDH 'aL-S'yYPh SL'y 'yYTM VY'aMUrV LShMShVN HL'a YD'yTh KY-MShLYM BNV PhLShThYM VMH-Z'aTh 'yShYTh LNV VY'aMUr LHM K'aShUr 'yShV LY KN 'yShYThY LHM.     And three thousand men of Judah go down unto the cleft of the rock Etam, and say to Samson, `Hast thou now known that the Philistines are rulers over us? and what is this thou hast done to us?` And he saith to them, `As they did to me, so I did to them.`     descenderunt ergo tria milia virorum de Iuda ad specum silicis Aetham dixeruntque ad Samson nescis quod Philisthim imperent nobis quare hoc facere voluisti quibus ille ait sicut fecerunt mihi feci eis
 
12.    They said to him, "We have come down to bind you, that we may deliver you into the hand of the Philistines." Samson said to them, "Swear to me that you will not fall on me yourselves."     And they said unto him, We are come down to bind thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines. And Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not fall upon me yourselves.     ויאמרו  לו  לאסרך 
ירדנו  לתתך
ביד־פלשתים  ויאמר
להם  שמשון  השבעו
לי  פן־תפגעון  בי
אתם׃
    VY'aMUrV LV L'aSUrK YUrDNV LThThK BYD-PhLShThYM VY'aMUr LHM ShMShVN HShB'yV LY PhN-ThPhG'yVN BY 'aThM.     And they say to him, `To bind thee we have come down -- to give thee into the hand of the Philistines.` And Samson saith to them, `Swear to me, lest ye fall upon me yourselves.`     ligare inquiunt te venimus et tradere in manus Philisthinorum iurate respondit mihi quod non me occidatis
 
13.    They spoke to him, saying, "No; but we will bind you fast, and deliver you into their hand; but surely we will not kill you." They bound him with two new ropes, and brought him up from the rock.     And they spake unto him, saying, No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand: but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with two new cords, and brought him up from the rock.     ויאמרו  לו  לאמר  לא 
כי־אסר  נאסרך
ונתנוך  בידם  והמת
לא  נמיתך  ויאסרהו
בשנים  עבתים  חדשים
ויעלוהו  מן־הסלע׃
    VY'aMUrV LV L'aMUr L'a KY-'aSUr N'aSUrK VNThNVK BYDM VHMTh L'a NMYThK VY'aSUrHV BShNYM 'yBThYM ChDShYM VY'yLVHV MN-HSL'y.     And they speak to him, saying, No, but we certainly bind thee, and have given thee into their hand, and we certainly do not put thee to death;` and they bind him with two thick bands, new ones, and bring him up from the rock.     dixerunt non te occidimus sed vinctum tradimus ligaveruntque eum duobus novis funibus et tulerunt de petra Aetham
 
14.    When he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him: and the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on him, and the ropes that were on his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands dropped from off his hands.     And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against him: and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.     הוא־בא  עד־לחי 
ופלשתים  הריעו
לקראתו  ותצלח  עליו
רוח  יהוה  ותהיינה
העבתים  אשר
על־זרועותיו
כפשתים  אשר  בערו

15.    He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, and put forth his hand, and took it, and struck a thousand men therewith.     And he found a new jawbone of an ass, and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew a thousand men therewith.     וימצא  לחי־חמור 
טריה  וישלח  ידו

    VYMTSh'a LChY-ChMVUr TUrYH VYShLCh YDV VYQChH VYK-BH 'aLPh 'aYSh.     and he findeth a fresh jaw-bone of an ass, and putteth forth his hand and taketh it, and smiteth with it -- a thousand men.     inventamque maxillam id est mandibulam asini quae iacebat arripiens interfecit in ea mille viros
 
16.    Samson said, "With the jawbone of a donkey, heaps on heaps; with the jawbone of a donkey I have struck a thousand men."     And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a thousand men.     ויאמר  שמשון  בלחי

    VY'aMUr ShMShVN BLChY HChMVUr ChMVUr ChMUrThYM BLChY HChMVUr HKYThY 'aLPh 'aYSh.     And Samson saith, `With a jaw-bone of the ass -- an ass upon asses -- with a jaw-bone of the ass I have smitten a thousand men.`     et ait in maxilla asini in mandibula pulli asinarum delevi eos et percussi mille viros
 
17.    It happened, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ramath Lehi.     And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, and called that place Ramathlehi.     ויהי  ככלתו  לדבר 
וישלך  הלחי  מידו
ויקרא  למקום  ההוא
רמת  לחי׃
    VYHY KKLThV LDBUr VYShLK HLChY MYDV VYQUr'a LMQVM HHV'a UrMTh LChY.     And it cometh to pass when he finisheth speaking, that he casteth away the jaw-bone out of his hand, and calleth that place Ramath-Lehi;     cumque haec canens verba conplesset proiecit mandibulam de manu et vocavit nomen loci illius Ramathlehi quod interpretatur elevatio Maxillae
 
18.    He was very thirsty, and called on Yahweh, and said, "You have given this great deliverance by the hand of your servant; and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?"     And he was sore athirst, and called on the LORD, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand of thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?     ויצמא  מאד  ויקרא 
אל־יהוה  ויאמר  אתה
נתת  ביד־עבדך
את־התשועה  הגדלה
הזאת  ועתה  אמות
בצמא  ונפלתי  ביד
הערלים׃
    VYTShM'a M'aD VYQUr'a 'aL-YHVH VY'aMUr 'aThH NThTh BYD-'yBDK 'aTh-HThShV'yH HGDLH HZ'aTh V'yThH 'aMVTh BTShM'a VNPhLThY BYD H'yUrLYM.     and he thirsteth exceedingly, and calleth unto Jehovah, and saith, `Thou -- Thou hast given by the hand of Thy servant this great salvation; and now, I die with thirst, and have fallen into the hand of the uncircumcised.`     sitiensque valde clamavit ad Dominum et ait tu dedisti in manu servi tui salutem hanc maximam atque victoriam et en siti morior incidamque in manus incircumcisorum
 
19.    But God split the hollow place that is in Lehi, and water came out of it. When he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: therefore its name was called En Hakkore, which is in Lehi, to this day.     But God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof Enhakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.     ויבקע  אלהים 
את־המכתש  אשר־בלחי
ויצאו  ממנו  מים
וישת  ותשב  רוחו
ויחי  על־כן  קרא
שמה  עין  הקורא  אשר

    VYBQ'y 'aLHYM 'aTh-HMKThSh 'aShUr-BLChY VYTSh'aV MMNV MYM VYShTh VThShB UrVChV VYChY 'yL-KN QUr'a ShMH 'yYN HQVUr'a 'aShUr BLChY 'yD HYVM HZH.     And God cleaveth the hollow place which is in Lehi, and waters come out of it, and he drinketh, and his spirit cometh back, and he reviveth; therefore hath one called its name `The fountain of him who is calling,` which is in Lehi unto this day.     aperuit itaque Dominus molarem dentem in maxilla asini et egressae sunt ex eo aquae quibus haustis refocilavit spiritum et vires recepit idcirco appellatum est nomen loci illius Fons invocantis de maxilla usque in praesentem diem
