1.    αυτοι γαρ οιδατε αδελφοι την εισοδον ημων την προς υμας οτι ου κενη γεγονεν     For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain:     For you yourselves know, brothers, our visit to you wasn't in vain,     For you yourselves, brothers, are conscious that our coming among you was not without effect:

2.    αλλα προπαθοντες και υβρισθεντες καθως οιδατε εν φιλιπποις επαρρησιασαμεθα εν τω θεω ημων λαλησαι προς υμας το ευαγγελιον του θεου εν πολλω αγωνι     But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.     but having suffered before and been shamefully treated, as you know, at Philippi, we grew bold in our God to tell you the Good News of God in much conflict.     But after we had first undergone much pain and been cruelly attacked as you saw, at Philippi, by the help of God we gave you the good news without fear, though everything was against us.

3.    η γαρ παρακλησις ημων ουκ εκ πλανης ουδε εξ ακαθαρσιας ουδε εν δολω     For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile:     For our exhortation is not of error, nor of uncleanness, nor in deception.     For our witness does not come from error or from an unclean heart or from deceit:

4.    αλλα καθως δεδοκιμασμεθα υπο του θεου πιστευθηναι το ευαγγελιον ουτως λαλουμεν ουχ ως ανθρωποις αρεσκοντες αλλα θεω τω δοκιμαζοντι τας καρδιας ημων     But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.     But even as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Good News, so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, who tests our hearts.     But even as the good news was given to us by the approval of God, so we give it out; not as pleasing men, but God by whom our hearts are tested.

5.    ουτε γαρ ποτε εν λογω κολακειας εγενηθημεν καθως οιδατε ουτε εν προφασει πλεονεξιας θεος μαρτυς     For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:     For neither were we at any time found using words of flattery, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness (God is witness),     For it is common knowledge among you that we never made use of smooth-sounding false words, and God is witness that at no time were we secretly desiring profit for ourselves,

6.    ουτε ζητουντες εξ ανθρωπων δοξαν ουτε αφ υμων ουτε απ αλλων     Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ.     nor seeking glory from men (neither from you nor from others), when we might have claimed authority as apostles of Christ.     Or looking for glory from men, from you or from others, when we might have made ourselves a care to you as Apostles of Christ.

7.    δυναμενοι εν βαρει ειναι ως χριστου αποστολοι αλλα εγενηθημεν νηπιοι εν μεσω υμων ως εαν τροφος θαλπη τα εαυτης τεκνα     But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:     But we were gentle among you, like a nursing mother cherishes her own children.     But we were gentle among you, like a woman caring for her little ones:

8.    ουτως ομειρομενοι υμων ευδοκουμεν μεταδουναι υμιν ου μονον το ευαγγελιον του θεου αλλα και τας εαυτων ψυχας διοτι αγαπητοι ημιν εγενηθητε     So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.     Even so, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you, not the Good News of God only, but also our own souls, because you had become very dear to us.     Even so, being full of loving desire for you, we took delight in giving you not only God's good news, but even our lives, because you were dear to us.

9.    μνημονευετε γαρ αδελφοι τον κοπον ημων και τον μοχθον νυκτος και ημερας εργαζομενοι προς το μη επιβαρησαι τινα υμων εκηρυξαμεν εις υμας το ευαγγελιον του θεου     For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the gospel of God.     For you remember, brothers, our labor and travail; for working night and day, that we might not burden any of you, we preached to you the Good News of God.     For you have the memory, my brothers, of our trouble and care; how, working night and day, so that we might not be a trouble to any of you, we gave you the good news of God.

10.    υμεις μαρτυρες και ο θεος ως οσιως και δικαιως και αμεμπτως υμιν τοις πιστευουσιν εγενηθημεν     Ye are witnesses, and God also, how holily and justly and unblameably we behaved ourselves among you that believe:     You are witnesses with God, how holy, righteously, and blamelessly we behaved ourselves toward you who believe.     You are witnesses, with God, how holy and upright and free from all evil was our way of life among you who have faith;

11.    καθαπερ οιδατε ως ενα εκαστον υμων ως πατηρ τεκνα εαυτου παρακαλουντες υμας και παραμυθουμενοι     As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children,     As you know, we exhorted, comforted, and implored every one of you, as a father does his own children,     Even as you saw how, like a father with his children, we were teaching and comforting you all, and giving witness,

12.    και μαρτυρομενοι εις το περιπατειν υμας αξιως του θεου του καλουντος υμας εις την εαυτου βασιλειαν και δοξαν     That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.     to the end that you should walk worthily of God, who calls you into his own Kingdom and glory.     So that your lives might be pleasing to God, who has given you a part in his kingdom and his glory.

13.    και δια τουτο και ημεις ευχαριστουμεν τω θεω αδιαλειπτως οτι παραλαβοντες λογον ακοης παρ ημων του θεου εδεξασθε ου λογον ανθρωπων αλλα καθως εστιν αληθως λογον θεου ος και ενεργειται εν υμιν τοις πιστευουσιν     For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.     For this cause we also thank God without ceasing, that, when you received from us the word of the message of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but, as it is in truth, the word of God, which also works in you who believe.     And for this cause we still give praise to God, that, when the word came to your ears through us, you took it, not as the word of man, but, as it truly is, the word of God, which has living power in you who have faith.

14.    υμεις γαρ μιμηται εγενηθητε αδελφοι των εκκλησιων του θεου των ουσων εν τη ιουδαια εν χριστω ιησου οτι τα αυτα επαθετε και υμεις υπο των ιδιων συμφυλετων καθως και αυτοι υπο των ιουδαιων     For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews:     For you, brothers, became imitators of the assemblies of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus; for you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, even as they did from the Jews;     For you, my brothers, took as your examples the churches of God which are in Judaea in Christ Jesus; because you underwent the same things from your countrymen as they did from the Jews;

15.    των και τον κυριον αποκτειναντων ιησουν και τους προφητας και ημασ εκδιωξαντων και θεω μη αρεσκοντων και πασιν ανθρωποις εναντιων     Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:     who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and drove us out, and didn't please God, and are contrary to all men;     Who put to death the Lord Jesus and the prophets, violently driving us out; who are unpleasing to God and against all men;

16.    κωλυοντων ημας τοις εθνεσιν λαλησαι ινα σωθωσιν εις το αναπληρωσαι αυτων τας αμαρτιας παντοτε εφθασεν δε επ αυτους η οργη εις τελος     Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.     forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved; to fill up their sins always. But wrath has come on them to the uttermost.     Who, to make the measure of their sins complete, kept us from giving the word of salvation to the Gentiles: but the wrath of God is about to come on them in the fullest degree.

17.    ημεις δε αδελφοι απορφανισθεντες αφ υμων προς καιρον ωρας προσωπω ου καρδια περισσοτερως εσπουδασαμεν το προσωπον υμων ιδειν εν πολλη επιθυμια     But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.     But we, brothers, being bereaved of you for a short season, in presence, not in heart, tried even harder to see your face with great desire,     But we, my brothers, being away from you for a short time, in body but not in heart, had all the more desire to see your face;

18.    διοτι ηθελησαμεν ελθειν προς υμας εγω μεν παυλος και απαξ και δις και ενεκοψεν ημας ο σατανας     Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.     because we wanted to come to you--indeed, I, Paul, once and again--but Satan hindered us.     For which reason we made attempts to come to you, even I, Paul, once and again; but Satan kept us from coming.

19.    τις γαρ ημων ελπις η χαρα η στεφανος καυχησεως η ουχι και υμεις εμπροσθεν του κυριου ημων ιησου εν τη αυτου παρουσια     For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?     For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Isn't it even you, before our Lord Jesus{TR adds "Christ"} at his coming?     For what is our hope or joy or crown of glory? Are not even you, before our Lord Jesus, at his coming?

20.    υμεις γαρ εστε η δοξα ημων και η χαρα     For ye are our glory and joy.     For you are our glory and our joy.     For you are our glory and our joy.
