And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. | They said one to another, "Come, let's make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." ויאמרו הבה נבנה־לנו עיר ומגדל וראשו בשמים ונעשה־לנו שם פן־ נפוץ על־פני כל־הארץ׃ |
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. | They said, "Come, let's build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top reaches to the sky, and let's make ourselves a name, lest we be scattered abroad on the surface of the whole earth." | And they said, Come, let us make a town, and a tower whose top will go up as high as heaven; and let us make a great name for ourselves, so that we may not be wanderers over the face of the earth. | |||

וירד יהוה לראת את־העיר ואת־המגדל אשר בנו בני האדם׃ |
And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. | Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built. | And the Lord came down to see the town and the tower which the children of men were building. | |||

ויאמר יהוה הן עם אחד ושפה אחת לכלם וזה החלם לעשות ועתה לא־ יבצר מהם כל אשר יזמו לעשות׃ |
And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. | Yahweh said, "Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do. | And the Lord said, See, they are all one people and have all one language; and this is only the start of what they may do: and now it will not be possible to keep them from any purpose of theirs. | |||

הבה נרדה ונבלה שם שפתם אשר לא ישמעו איש שפת רעהו׃ |
Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. | Come, let's go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." | Come, let us go down and take away the sense of their language, so that they will not be able to make themselves clear to one another. | |||

ויפץ יהוה אתם משם על־פני כל־הארץ ויחדלו לבנת העיר׃ |
So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. | So Yahweh scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city. | So the Lord God sent them away into every part of the earth: and they gave up building their town. | |||

על־כן קרא שמה בבל כי־שם בלל יהוה שפת כל־הארץ ומשם הפיצם יהוה על־פני כל־הארץ׃ |
Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. | Therefore its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of all the earth.
