ויבאו שני המלאכים סדמה בערב ולוט ישב בשער־סדם וירא־לוט ויקם לקראתם וישתחו אפים ארצה׃ |
And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; | The two angels came to Sodom at evening. ויאמר הנה נא־אדני סורו נא אל־בית עבדכם ולינו ורחצו רגליכם והשכמתם והלכתם לדרככם ויאמרו לא כי ברחוב נלין׃ |
And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. | and he said, "See now, my lords, please turn aside into your servant's house, stay all night, wash your feet, and you can rise up early, and go on your way." They said, "No, but we will stay in the street all night." | And he said, My masters, come now into your servant's house and take your rest there for the night, and let your feet be washed; and early in the morning you may go on your way. And they said, Not so, but we will take our night's rest in the street. | |||

ויקראו אל־לוט ויאמרו לו איה האנשים אשר־באו אליך הלילה הוציאם אלינו ונדעה אתם׃ |
And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. | They called to Lot, and said to him, "Where are the men who came in to you this night? Bring them out to us, that we may have sex with them." | And crying out to Lot, they said, Where are the men who came to your house this night? Send them out to us, so that we may take our pleasure with them. | |||

ויצא אלהם לוט הפתחה והדלת סגר אחריו׃ |

ויאמר אל־נא אחי תרעו׃ |
And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly. | He said, "Please, my brothers, don't act so wickedly. | And he said, My brothers, do not this evil. | |||

הנה־נא לי שתי בנות אשר לא־ידעו איש אוציאה־נא אתהן אליכם ועשו להן כטוב בעיניכם רק לאנשים האל אל־תעשו דבר כי־על־כן באו בצל קרתי׃ |
Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. | See now, I have two virgin daughters. Please let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them what seems good to you. Only don't do anything to these men, because they have come under the shadow of my roof." | See now, I have two unmarried daughters; I will send them out to you so that you may do to them whatever seems good to you: only do nothing to these men, for this is why they have come under the shade of my roof. | |||

ויאמרו גש־הלאה ויאמרו האחד בא־לגור וישפט שפוט עתה נרע לך מהם ויפצרו באיש בלוט מאד ויגשו לשבר הדלת׃ |
And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. | They said, "Stand back!" Then they said, "This one fellow came in to live as a foreigner, and he appoints himself a judge. Now will we deal worse with you, than with them!" They pressed hard on the man Lot, and drew near to break the door. | And they said, Give way there. This one man, they said, came here from a strange country, and will he now be our judge? now we will do worse to you than to them; and pushing violently against Lot, they came near to get the door broken in. | |||

ואת־האנשים אשר־פתח הבית הכו בסנורים מקטן ועד־גדול וילאו למצא הפתח׃ |
And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door. | They struck the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the door. | But the men who were outside the door they made blind, all of them, small and great, so that they were tired out with looking for the door. | |||

ויאמרו האנשים אל־לוט עד מי־לך פה חתן ובניך ובנתיך וכל אשר־לך בעיר הוצא מן־המקום׃ |
And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place: | The men said to Lot, "Do you have anybody else here? Sons-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whoever you have in the city, bring them out of the place: | Then the men said to Lot, Are there any others of your family here? sons-in-law or sons or daughters, take them all out of this place; | |||

כי־משחתים אנחנו את־המקום הזה כי־גדלה צעקתם את־פני יהוה וישלחנו יהוה לשחתה׃ |
For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it. | for we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before Yahweh that Yahweh has sent us to destroy it." | For we are about to send destruction on this place, because a great outcry against them has come to the ears of the Lord; and the Lord has sent us to put an end to the town. | |||

ויצא לוט וידבר אל־חתניו לקחי בנתיו ויאמר קומו צאו מן־המקום הזה כי־משחית יהוה את־העיר ויהי כמצחק בעיני חתניו׃ |
And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law. | Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters, and said, "Get up! Get out of this place, for Yahweh will destroy the city." But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be joking. | And Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were married to his daughters, Come, let us go out of this place, for the Lord is about to send destruction on the town. וכמו השחר עלה ויאיצו המלאכים בלוט לאמר קום קח את־אשתך ואת־ שתי בנתיך הנמצאת פן־תספה בעון העיר׃ |
And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the city. | When the morning came, then the angels hurried Lot, saying, "Get up! Take your wife, and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the iniquity of the city." | And when morning came, the angels did all in their power to make Lot go, saying, Get up quickly and take your wife and your two daughters who are here, and go, for fear that you come to destruction in the punishment of the town. | |||

ויתמהמה ויחזיקו האנשים בידו וביד־אשתו וביד שתי בנתיו בחמלת יהוה עליו ויצאהו וינחהו מחוץ לעיר׃ |
And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city. | But he lingered; and the men grabbed his hand, his wife's hand, and his two daughters' hands, Yahweh being merciful to him; and they took him out, and set him outside of the city. | But while he was waiting, the men took him and his wife and his daughters by the hand, for the Lord had mercy on them, and put them outside the town. | |||

ויהי כהוציאם אתם החוצה ויאמר המלט על־נפשך אל־תביט אחריך ואל־ תעמד בכל־הככר ההרה המלט פן־תספה׃ |
And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed. | It came to pass, when they had taken them out, that he said, "Escape for your life! Don't look behind you, and don't stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be consumed!" | And when they had put them out, he said, Go for your life, without looking back or waiting in the lowland; go quickly to the mountain or you will come to destruction. | |||

ויאמר לוט אלהם אל־נא אדני׃ |
And Lot said unto them, Oh, not so, my LORD: | Lot said to them, "Oh, not so, my lord. | And Lot said to them, Not so, O my Lord; | |||

הנה־נא מצא עבדך חן בעיניך ותגדל חסדך אשר עשית עמדי להחיות את־ נפשי ואנכי לא אוכל להמלט ההרה פן־תדבקני הרעה ומתי׃ |
Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die: | See now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your loving kindness, which you have shown to me in saving my life. I can't escape to the mountain, lest evil overtake me, and I die. | See now, your servant has had grace in your eyes and great is your mercy in keeping my life from destruction, but I am not able to get as far as the mountain before evil overtakes me and death; | |||

הנה־נא העיר הזאת קרבה לנוס שמה והוא מצער אמלטה נא שמה הלא מצער הוא ותחי נפשי׃ |
Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live. | See now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one. Oh let me escape there (isn't it a little one?), and my soul will live." | This town, now, is near, and it is a little one: O, let me go there (is it not a little one?) so that my life may be safe. | |||

ויאמר אליו הנה נשאתי פניך גם לדבר הזה לבלתי הפכי את־העיר אשר דברת׃ |
And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken. | He said to him, "Behold, I have granted your request concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. | And he said, See, I have given you your request in this one thing more: I will not send destruction on this town. | |||

מהר המלט שמה כי לא אוכל לעשות דבר עד־באך שמה על־כן קרא שם־ העיר צוער׃ |
Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. | Hurry, escape there, for I can't do anything until you get there." Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.{Zoar means "little."} | Go there quickly, for I am not able to do anything till you have come there. For this reason, the town was named Zoar. | |||

השמש יצא על־הארץ ולוט בא צערה׃ |
The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar. | The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. | The sun was up when Lot came to Zoar. | |||

ויהוה המטיר על־סדם ועל־עמרה גפרית ואש מאת יהוה מן־השמים׃ |
Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; | Then Yahweh rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah sulfur and fire from Yahweh out of the sky. | Then the Lord sent fire and flaming smoke raining down from heaven on Sodom and Gomorrah. | |||

ויהפך את־הערים האל ואת כל־הככר ואת כל־ישבי הערים וצמח האדמה׃ |

ותבט אשתו מאחריו ותהי נציב מלח׃ |

וישקף על־פני סדם ועמרה ועל־כל־פני ארץ הככר וירא והנה עלה קיטר הארץ כקיטר הכבשן׃ |

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. | It came to pass on the next day, that the firstborn said to the younger, "Behold, I lay last night with my father. Let us make him drink wine again, tonight.
