ויהי אחר הדברים האלה חטאו משקה מלך־מצרים והאפה לאדניהם למלך מצרים׃ |

ויקצף פרעה על שני סריסיו על שר המשקים ועל שר האופים׃ |
And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers. | Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker. | And Pharaoh was angry with his two servants, with the chief wine-servant and the chief bread-maker; | |||

ויתן אתם במשמר בית שר הטבחים אל־בית הסהר מקום אשר יוסף אסור שם׃ |
And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound. | He put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound. | And he put them in prison under the care of the captain of the army, in the same prison where Joseph himself was shut up. | |||

ויפקד שר הטבחים את־יוסף אתם וישרת אתם ויהיו ימים במשמר׃ |

ויחלמו חלום שניהם איש חלמו בלילה אחד איש כפתרון חלמו המשקה והאפה אשר למלך מצרים אשר אסורים בבית הסהר׃ |
And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, which were bound in the prison. | They both dreamed a dream, each man his dream, in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison. | And these two had a dream on the same night; the chief wine-servant and the chief bread-maker of the king of Egypt, who were in prison, the two of them had dreams with a special sense. | |||

ויבא אליהם יוסף בבקר וירא אתם והנם זעפים׃ |

וישאל את־סריסי פרעה אשר אתו במשמר בית אדניו לאמר מדוע פניכם רעים היום׃ |
And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly to day? | He asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in custody in his master's house, saying, "Why do you look so sad today?" | And he said to the servants of Pharaoh who were in prison with him, Why are you looking so sad? | |||

ויאמרו אליו חלום חלמנו ופתר אין אתו ויאמר אלהם יוסף הלוא לאלהים פתרנים ספרו־נא לי׃ |
And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you. | They said to him, "We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it." Joseph said to them, "Don't interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me." | Then they said to him, We have had a dream, and no one is able to give us the sense. And Joseph said, Does not the sense of dreams come from God? what was your dream? | |||

ויספר שר־המשקים את־חלמו ליוסף ויאמר לו בחלומי והנה־גפן לפני׃ |
And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me; | The chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, "In my dream, behold, a vine was in front of me, | Then the chief wine-servant gave Joseph an account of his dream, and said, In my dream I saw a vine before me; | |||

ובגפן שלשה שריגם והוא כפרחת עלתה נצה הבשילו אשכלתיה ענבים׃ |
And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes: | and in the vine were three branches. And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand. | Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand." | And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and crushing them into Pharaoh's cup, gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand. | |||

ויאמר לו יוסף זה פתרנו שלשת השרגים שלשת ימים הם׃ |
And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days: | Joseph said to him, "This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days. | Then Joseph said, This is the sense of your dream: the three branches are three days; | |||

בעוד שלשת ימים ישא פרעה את־ראשך והשיבך על־כנך ונתת כוס־פרעה בידו כמשפט הראשון אשר היית משקהו׃ |
Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler. | Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head, and restore you to your office. You will give Pharaoh's cup into his hand, the way you did when you were his cupbearer. | After three days Pharaoh will give you honour, and put you back into your place, and you will give him his cup as you did before, when you were his wine-servant. | |||

כי אם־זכרתני אתך כאשר ייטב לך ועשית־נא עמדי חסד והזכרתני אל־ פרעה והוצאתני מן־הבית הזה׃ |
But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house: | But remember me when it will be well with you, and show kindness, please, to me, and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house. | But keep me in mind when things go well for you, and be good to me and say a good word for me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison: | |||

כי־גנב גנבתי מארץ העברים וגם־פה לא־עשיתי מאומה כי־שמו אתי בבור׃ |
For indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon. | For indeed, I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon." | For truly I was taken by force from the land of the Hebrews; and I have done nothing for which I might be put in prison. | |||

וירא שר־האפים כי טוב פתר ויאמר אל־יוסף אף־אני בחלומי והנה שלשה סלי חרי על־ראשי׃ |
When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, I had three white baskets on my head: | When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, "I also was in my dream, and behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head. | Now when the chief bread-maker saw that the first dream had a good sense, he said to Joseph, I had a dream; and in my dream there were three baskets of white bread on my head; | |||

ובסל העליון מכל מאכל פרעה מעשה אפה והעוף אכל אתם מן־הסל מעל ראשי׃ |
And in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head. | In the uppermost basket there was all kinds of baked food for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head." | And in the top basket were all sorts of cooked meats for Pharaoh; and the birds were taking them out of the baskets on my head. | |||

ויען יוסף ויאמר זה פתרנו שלשת הסלים שלשת ימים הם׃ |
And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: The three baskets are three days: | Joseph answered, "This is its interpretation. The three baskets are three days. | Then Joseph said, This is the sense of your dream: the three baskets are three days; | |||

בעוד שלשת ימים ישא פרעה את־ראשך מעליך ותלה אותך על־עץ ואכל העוף את־בשרך מעליך׃ |
Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee. | Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head from off you, and will hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from off you." | After three days Pharaoh will take you out of prison, hanging you on a tree, so that your flesh will be food for birds. | |||

ויהי ביום השלישי יום הלדת את־פרעה ויעש משתה לכל־עבדיו וישא את־ראש שר המשקים ואת־ראש שר האפים בתוך עבדיו׃ |
And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants. | It happened the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants, and he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants. | Now the third day was Pharaoh's birthday, and he gave a feast for all his servants; and he gave honour to the chief wine-servant and the chief bread-maker among the others. | |||

וישב את־שר המשקים על־משקהו ויתן הכוס על־כף פרעה׃ |
And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand: | He restored the chief cupbearer to his position again, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand; | And he put the chief wine-servant back in his old place; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand. | |||

ואת שר האפים תלה כאשר פתר להם יוסף׃ |
But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them. | but he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. | But the chief bread-maker was put to death by hanging, as Joseph had said. | |||

ולא־זכר שר־המשקים את־יוסף וישכחהו׃ |
Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him. | Yet the chief cupbearer didn't remember Joseph, but forgot him. | But the wine-servant did not keep Joseph in mind or give a thought to him. | |||
