ודוד עבר מעט מהראש והנה ציבא נער מפי־בשת לקראתו וצמד חמרים חבשים ועליהם מאתים לחם ומאה צמוקים ומאה קיץ ונבל יין׃ |
And when David was a little past the top of the hill, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of asses saddled, and upon them two hundred loaves of bread, and an hundred bunches of raisins, and an hundred of summer fruits, and a bottle of wine. | When David was a little past the top [of the ascent], behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of donkeys saddled, and on them two hundred loaves of bread, and one hundred clusters of raisins, and one hundred summer fruits, and a bottle of wine. | And when David had gone a little way past the top of the slope, Ziba, the servant of Mephibosheth, came to him, with two asses on which were two hundred cakes of bread and a hundred stems of dry grapes and a hundred summer fruits and a skin of wine. | |||

ויאמר המלך אל־ציבא מה־אלה לך ויאמר ציבא החמורים לבית־המלך לרכב ולהלחם והקיץ לאכול הנערים והיין לשתות היעף במדבר׃ |
And the king said unto Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses be for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as be faint in the wilderness may drink. | The king said to Ziba, What do you mean by these? Ziba said, The donkeys are for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such as are faint in the wilderness may drink. | And David said to Ziba, What is your reason for this? And Ziba said, The asses are for the use of the king's people, and the bread and the fruit are food for the young men; and the wine is for drink for those who are overcome by weariness in the waste land. | |||

ויאמר המלך ואיה בן־אדניך ויאמר ציבא אל־המלך הנה יושב בירושלם כי אמר היום ישיבו לי בית ישראל את ממלכות אבי׃ |
And the king said, And where is thy master's son? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem: for he said, To day shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father. | The king said, "Where is your master's son?" Ziba said to the king, "Behold, he is staying in Jerusalem; for he said, 'Today the house of Israel will restore me the kingdom of my father.'" | And the king said, And where is your master's son? And Ziba said, He is still at Jerusalem: for he said, Today Israel will give back to me the kingdom of my father. | |||

ויאמר המלך לצבא הנה לך כל אשר למפי־בשת ויאמר ציבא השתחויתי אמצא־חן בעיניך אדני המלך׃ |
Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine are all that pertained unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I humbly beseech thee that I may find grace in thy sight, my lord, O king. | Then the king said to Ziba, "Behold, all that pertains to Mephibosheth is yours." Ziba said, "I do obeisance. Let me find favor in your sight, my lord, O king." | Then the king said to Ziba, Truly everything which was Mephibosheth's is yours. ובא המלך דוד עד־בחורים והנה משם איש יוצא ממשפחת בית־שאול ושמו שמעי בן־גרא יצא יצוא ומקלל׃ |
And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, thence came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and cursed still as he came. | When king David came to Bahurim, behold, a man of the family of the house of Saul came out, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera. השיב עליך יהוה כל דמי בית־שאול אשר מלכת תחתו ויתן יהוה את־ המלוכה ביד אבשלום בנך והנך ברעתך כי איש דמים אתה׃ |
The LORD hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a bloody man. | Yahweh has returned on you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned! Yahweh has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son! Behold, you are caught by your own mischief, because you are a man of blood!" | The Lord has sent punishment on you for all the blood of the family of Saul, whose kingdom you have taken; and the Lord has given the kingdom to Absalom, your son: now you yourself are taken in your evil, because you are a man of blood. | |||

ויאמר אבישי בן־צרויה אל־המלך למה יקלל הכלב המת הזה את־אדני המלך אעברה־נא ואסירה את־ראשו׃ |
Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head. | Then Abishai the son of Zeruiah said to the king, "Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the LORD hath said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so? | The king said, "What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? Because he curses, and because Yahweh has said to him, 'Curse David;' who then shall say, 'Why have you done so?'" | And the king said, What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? Let him go on cursing, for the Lord has said, Put a curse on David, and who then may say, Why have you done so? | |||

ויאמר דוד אל־אבישי ואל־כל־עבדיו הנה בני אשר־יצא ממעי מבקש את־ נפשי ואף כי־עתה בן־הימיני הנחו לו ויקלל כי אמר־לו יהוה׃ |
And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him curse; for the LORD hath bidden him. | David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, "Behold, my son, who came forth from my bowels, seeks my life. How much more this Benjamite, now? אולי יראה יהוה בעוני והשיב יהוה לי טובה תחת קללתו היום הזה׃ |
It may be that the LORD will look on mine affliction, and that the LORD will requite me good for his cursing this day. | It may be that Yahweh will look on the wrong done to me, and that Yahweh will repay me good for the cursing of me today." | It may be that the Lord will take note of my wrongs, and give me back good in answer to his cursing of me today. | |||

וילך דוד ואנשיו בדרך ושמעי הלך בצלע ההר לעמתו הלוך ויקלל ויסקל באבנים לעמתו ועפר בעפר׃ |

And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David's friend, was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom, God save the king, God save the king. | It happened, when Hushai the Archite, David's friend, had come to Absalom, that Hushai said to Absalom, "Long live the king! ויאמר אבשלום אל־חושי זה חסדך את־רעך למה לא־הלכת את־רעך׃ |
And Absalom said to Hushai, Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend? | Absalom said to Hushai, "Is this your kindness to your friend? Why didn't you go with your friend?" | And Absalom said, Is this your love for your friend? why did you not go with your friend? | |||

ויאמר חושי אל־אבשלם לא כי אשר בחר יהוה והעם הזה וכל־איש ישראל לא אהיה ואתו אשב׃ |
And Hushai said unto Absalom, Nay; but whom the LORD, and this people, and all the men of Israel, choose, his will I be, and with him will I abide. | Hushai said to Absalom, "No; but whoever Yahweh, and this people, and all the men of Israel have chosen, his will I be, and with him I will stay. | And Hushai said to Absalom, Not so; I am for that man whom the Lord and this people and all the men of Israel have taken as king, and I will take my place with him. | |||

והשנית למי אני אעבד הלוא לפני בנו כאשר עבדתי לפני אביך כן אהיה לפניך׃ |
And again, whom should I serve? should I not serve in the presence of his son? as I have served in thy father's presence, so will I be in thy presence. | Again, whom should I serve? Shouldn't I serve in the presence of his son? As I have served in your father's presence, so will I be in your presence." | And more than this! where is my place as a servant? is it not before his son? as I have been your father's servant, so will I be yours. | |||

ויאמר אבשלום אל־אחיתפל הבו לכם עצה מה־נעשה׃ |
Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, Give counsel among you what we shall do. | Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, "Give your counsel what we shall do." | Then Absalom said to Ahithophel, Give your opinion now, what are we to do? | |||

ויאמר אחיתפל אל־אבשלם בוא אל־פלגשי אביך אשר הניח לשמור הבית ושמע כל־ישראל כי־נבאשת את־אביך וחזקו ידי כל־אשר אתך׃ |
And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father's concubines, which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong. | Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Go in to your father's concubines, that he has left to keep the house. Then all Israel will hear that you are abhorred by your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong." | And Ahithophel said to Absalom, Go in to your father's women who are here looking after his house; then all Israel will have the news that you are hated by your father, and the hands of your supporters will be strong. | |||

ויטו לאבשלום האהל על־הגג ויבא אבשלום אל־פלגשי אביו לעיני כל־ ישראל׃ |

And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man had enquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom. | The counsel of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man inquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom. | In those days the opinions of Ahithophel were valued as highly as if through him a man might get direction from God; so were they valued by David as much as by Absalom. | |||
