ויאמר אחיתפל אל־אבשלם אבחרה נא שנים־עשר אלף איש ואקומה וארדפה אחרי־דוד הלילה׃ |
Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night: | Moreover Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Let me now choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David tonight. | Then Ahithophel said to Absalom, Let me take out twelve thousand men and this very night I will go after David: | |||

ואבוא עליו והוא יגע ורפה ידים והחרדתי אתו ונס כל־העם אשר־אתו והכיתי את־המלך לבדו׃ |
And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only: | I will come on him while he is weary and exhausted, and will make him afraid. All the people who are with him shall flee. I will strike the king only; | And I will come up with him when he is tired and feeble, and make him full of fear: and all the people with him will go in flight; and I will make an attack on the king only: | |||

ואשיבה כל־העם אליך כשוב הכל האיש אשר אתה מבקש כל־העם יהיה שלום׃ |
And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace. | and I will bring back all the people to you. The man whom you seek is as if all returned. All the people shall be in peace." | And I will make all the people come back to you as a bride comes back to her husband: it is the life of only one man you are going after; so all the people will be at peace. | |||

ויאמר אבשלום קרא נא גם לחושי הארכי ונשמעה מה־בפיו גם־הוא׃ |
Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith. | Then said Absalom, "Now call Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he says." | Then Absalom said, Now send for Hushai the Archite, and let us give ear to what he has to say. | |||

ויבא חושי אל־אבשלום ויאמר אבשלום אליו לאמר כדבר הזה דבר אחיתפל הנעשה את־דברו אם־אין אתה דבר׃ |
And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not; speak thou. | When Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spoke to him, saying, "Ahithophel has spoken like this. Shall we do what he says? If not, speak up." | And when Hushai came, Absalom said to him, This is what Ahithophel has said: are we to do as he says? if not, what is your suggestion? | |||

ויאמר חושי אל־אבשלום לא־טובה העצה אשר־יעץ אחיתפל בפעם הזאת׃ |
And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time. | Hushai said to Absalom, "The counsel that Ahithophel has given this time is not good." | And Hushai said to Absalom, Ahithophel's idea is not a good one at this time. | |||

ויאמר חושי אתה ידעת את־אביך ואת־אנשיו כי גברים המה ומרי נפש המה כדב שכול בשדה ואביך איש מלחמה ולא ילין את־העם׃ |
For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. | Hushai said moreover, "You know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are fierce in their minds, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Your father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. | Hushai said further, You have knowledge of your father and his men, that they are men of war, and that their feelings are bitter, like those of a bear in the field whose young ones have been taken from her: and your father is a man of war, and will not take his night's rest with the people; | |||

הנה עתה הוא־נחבא באחת הפחתים או באחד המקומת והיה כנפל בהם בתחלה ושמע השמע ואמר היתה מגפה בעם אשר אחרי אבשלם׃ |
Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom. | Behold, he is now hidden in some pit, or in some other place. It will happen, when some of them have fallen at the first, that whoever hears it will say, 'There is a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom!' | But he will certainly have taken cover now in some hole or secret place; and if some of our people, at the first attack, are overcome, then any hearing of it will say, There is destruction among the people who are on Absalom's side. | |||

והוא גם־בן־חיל אשר לבו כלב האריה המס ימס כי־ידע כל־ישראל כי־ גבור אביך ובני־חיל אשר אתו׃ |
And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men. | Even he who is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and those who are with him are valiant men. | Then even the strongest, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will become like water; for all Israel is conscious that your father is a man of war, and those who are with him are strong and without fear. | |||

כי יעצתי האסף יאסף עליך כל־ישראל מדן ועד־באר שבע כחול אשר־על־ הים לרב ופניך הלכים בקרב׃ |
Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person. | But I counsel that all Israel be gathered together to you, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that you go to battle in your own person. | But my suggestion is that all Israel, from Dan as far as Beer-sheba, comes together to you, a great army like the sands of the sea in number; and that you yourself go out among them. | |||

ובאנו אליו באחת המקומת אשר נמצא שם ונחנו עליו כאשר יפל הטל על־האדמה ולא־נותר בו ובכל־האנשים אשר־אתו גם־אחד׃ |
So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one. | So shall we come on him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light on him as the dew falls on the ground; and of him and of all the men who are with him we will not leave so much as one. | Then we will come on him in some place, wherever he may be, falling on him as the dew comes on the earth: and of him and all the men who are with him not one will get away with his life. | |||

ואם־אל־עיר יאסף והשיאו כל־ישראל אל־העיר ההיא חבלים וסחבנו אתו עד־הנחל עד אשר־לא־נמצא שם גם־צרור׃ |
Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there. | Moreover, if he be gone into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there isn't one small stone found there." | And if he has gone into some town, then let all Israel take strong cords to that town, and we will have it pulled into the valley, till not one small stone is to be seen there. | |||

ויאמר אבשלום וכל־איש ישראל טובה עצת חושי הארכי מעצת אחיתפל ויהוה צוה להפר את־עצת אחיתפל הטובה לבעבור הביא יהוה אל־אבשלום את־הרעה׃ |
And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom. | Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel." For Yahweh had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that Yahweh might bring evil on Absalom. | Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, Hushai's suggestion is better than that of Ahithophel. For it was the purpose of the Lord to make the wise designs of Ahithophel without effect, so that the Lord might send evil on Absalom. | |||

ויאמר חושי אל־צדוק ואל־אביתר הכהנים כזאת וכזאת יעץ אחיתפל את־ אבשלם ואת זקני ישראל וכזאת וכזאת יעצתי אני׃ |
Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel; and thus and thus have I counselled. | Then Hushai said to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, "Ahithophel counseled Absalom and the elders of Israel that way; and I have counseled this way. | Then Hushai said to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, This is the suggestion made by Ahithophel to Absalom and the responsible men of Israel, and this is what I said to them. | |||

ועתה שלחו מהרה והגידו לדוד לאמר אל־תלן הלילה בערבות המדבר וגם עבור תעבור פן יבלע למלך ולכל־העם אשר אתו׃ |
Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are with him. | Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, 'Don't lodge this night at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people who are with him.'" | So now send the news quickly to David, and say, Do not take your night's rest by the way across the river to the waste land, but be certain to go over; or the king and all the people with him will come to destruction. | |||

ויהונתן ואחימעץ עמדים בעין־רגל והלכה השפחה והגידה להם והם ילכו והגידו למלך דוד כי לא יוכלו להראות לבוא העירה׃ |
Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by Enrogel; for they might not be seen to come into the city: and a wench went and told them; and they went and told king David. | Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying by En Rogel; and a female servant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David. For they might not be seen to come into the city. | Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were waiting by En-rogel; and a servant-girl went from time to time and gave them news and they went with the news to King David, for it was not wise for them to let themselves be seen coming into the town. | |||

וירא אתם נער ויגד לאבשלם וילכו שניהם מהרה ויבאו אל־בית־איש בבחורים ולו באר בחצרו וירדו שם׃ |
Nevertheless a lad saw them, and told Absalom: but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man's house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court; whither they went down. | But a boy saw them, and told Absalom. Then they both went away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down there. | But a boy saw them, and gave word of it to Absalom: so the two of them went away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim who had a water-hole in his garden, and they went down into it. | |||

ויבאו עבדי אבשלום אל־האשה הביתה ויאמרו איה אחימעץ ויהונתן ותאמר להם האשה עברו מיכל המים ויבקשו ולא מצאו וישבו ירושלם׃ |
And when Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. | Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, "Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?" The woman said to them, "They have gone over the brook of water." When they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. | And Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house and said, Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan? And the woman said to them, They have gone from here to the stream. And after searching for them, and seeing nothing of them, they went back to Jerusalem. | |||

ויהי אחרי לכתם ויעלו מהבאר וילכו ויגדו למלך דוד ויאמרו אל־ דוד קומו ועברו מהרה את־המים כי־ככה יעץ עליכם אחיתפל׃ |
And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you. | It happened, after they had departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David; and they said to David, "Arise and pass quickly over the water; for thus has Ahithophel counseled against you." | Then after the servants had gone away, they came up out of the water-hole and went to give King David the news; and they said, Get up and go quickly over the water, for such and such are Ahithophel's designs against you. | |||

ויקם דוד וכל־העם אשר אתו ויעברו את־הירדן עד־אור הבקר עד־אחד לא נעדר אשר לא־עבר את־הירדן׃ |
Then David arose, and all the people that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan. | Then David arose, and all the people who were with him, and they passed over the Jordan. And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre of his father. | When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, and arose, and got him home, to his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the tomb of his father. | Now when Ahithophel saw that his suggestion was not acted on, he got his ass ready, and went back to his house, to the town where he came from, and having put his house in order, he put himself to death by hanging; so he came to his end and was put in the resting-place of his father. | |||

And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa was a man's son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah Joab's mother. | Absalom set Amasa over the army instead of Joab. Now Amasa was the son of a man, whose name was Ithra the Israelite, who went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah, Joab's mother. | And Absalom put Amasa at the head of the army in place of Joab. And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, | It happened, when David was come to Mahanaim, that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, | Now when David had come to Mahanaim, Shobi, the son of Nahash of Rabbah, the Ammonite, and Machir, the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim, | |||

משכב וספות וכלי יוצר וחטים ושערים וקמח וקלי ופול ועדשים וקלי׃ |
