ויהי בהעלות יהוה את־אליהו בסערה השמים וילך אליהו ואלישע מן־ הגלגל׃ |
And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. | It happened, when Yahweh would take up Elijah by a whirlwind into heaven, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. | Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a great wind, Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. | |||

And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. | The sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, "Do you know that Yahweh will take away your master from your head today?" He said, "Yes, I know it; hold your peace." | And at Beth-el the sons of the prophets came out to Elisha and said, Has it been made clear to you that the Lord is going to take away your master from over you today? And he said, Yes, I have knowledge of it: say no more. | |||

ויגשו בני־הנביאים אשר־ביריחו אל־אלישע ויאמרו אליו הידעת כי היום יהוה לקח את־אדניך מעל ראשך ויאמר גם־אני ידעתי החשו׃ |
And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? וחמשים איש מבני הנביאים הלכו ויעמדו מנגד מרחוק ושניהם עמדו על־ הירדן׃ |
And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan. | Fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood opposite them at a distance; and they both stood by the Jordan. | And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went out and took their places facing them a long way off, while the two of them were by the edge of Jordan. | |||

And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. | It happened, when they had gone over, that Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you." Elisha said, "Please let a double portion of your spirit be on me." | And when they had come to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, Say what you would have me do for you before I am taken from you. And Elisha said, Be pleased to let a special measure of your spirit be on me. | |||

ויאמר הקשית לשאול אם־תראה אתי לקח מאתך יהי־לך כן ואם־אין לא יהיה׃ |
And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. | He said, "You have asked a hard thing. If you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so." | And he said, You have made a hard request: still, if you see me when I am taken from you, you will get your desire; but if not, it will not be so. | |||

ויהי המה הלכים הלוך ודבר והנה רכב־אש וסוסי אש ויפרדו בין שניהם ויעל אליהו בסערה השמים׃ |
And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. | It happened, as they still went on, and talked, that behold, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. | And while they went on their way, going on talking together, suddenly there were carriages and horses of fire separating them from one another and Elijah went up to heaven in a great wind. | |||

And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him. | When the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho over against him saw him, they said, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." ויאמרו אליו הנה־נא יש־את־עבדיך חמשים אנשים בני־חיל ילכו נא ויבקשו את־אדניך פן־נשאו רוח יהוה וישלכהו באחד ההרים או באחת הגיאות ויאמר לא תשלחו׃ |
And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest peradventure the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send. | They said to him, "See now, there are with your servants fifty strong men. Let them go, please, and seek your master. Perhaps the Spirit of Yahweh has taken him up, and put him on some mountain, or into some valley. He said, "You shall not send them." | And they said, Your servants have with us here fifty strong men; be pleased to let them go in search of Elijah; for it may be that the spirit of the Lord has taken him up and put him down on some mountain or in some valley. But he said, Do not send them. | |||

ויפצרו־בו עד־בש ויאמר שלחו וישלחו חמשים איש ויבקשו שלשה־ימים ולא מצאהו׃ |
And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not. | When they urged him until he was ashamed, he said, "Send them." They sent therefore fifty men; and they searched for three days, but didn't find him. | But when they kept on requesting him, he was shamed and said, Send, then. So they sent fifty men; but after searching for three days, they came back without having seen him. | |||

וישבו אליו והוא ישב ביריחו ויאמר אלהם הלוא־אמרתי אליכם אל־ תלכו׃ |
And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not? | They came back to him, while he stayed at Jericho; and he said to them, "Didn't I tell you, 'Don't go?'" | And they came back to him, while he was still at Jericho; and he said to them, Did I not say to you, Go not? | |||

ויאמרו אנשי העיר אל־אלישע הנה־נא מושב העיר טוב כאשר אדני ראה והמים רעים והארץ משכלת׃ |
And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is naught, and the ground barren. | The men of the city said to Elisha, "Behold, please, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad, and the land miscarries." | Now the men of the town said to Elisha, You see that the position of this town is good; but the water is bad, causing the young of the cattle to come to birth dead. | |||

ויאמר קחו־לי צלחית חדשה ושימו שם מלח ויקחו אליו׃ |
And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him. | He said, "Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it." They brought it to him. | So he said, Get me a new vessel, and put salt in it; and they took it to him. | |||

ויצא אל־מוצא המים וישלך־שם מלח ויאמר כה־אמר יהוה רפאתי למים האלה לא־יהיה משם עוד מות ומשכלת׃ |
And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land. | He went out to the spring of the waters, and threw salt into it, and said, "Thus says Yahweh, 'I have healed these waters. There shall not be from there any more death or miscarrying.'" | Then he went out to the spring from which the water came, and put salt in it, and said, The Lord says, Now I have made this water sweet; no longer will it be death-giving or unfertile. | |||

וירפו המים עד היום הזה כדבר אלישע אשר דבר׃ |
So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake. | So the waters were healed to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke. | And the water was made sweet again to this day, as Elisha said. | |||

ויעל משם בית־אל והוא עלה בדרך ונערים קטנים יצאו מן־העיר ויתקלסו־בו ויאמרו לו עלה קרח עלה קרח׃ |
And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. | He went up from there to Bethel. As he was going up by the way, some youths came out of the city and mocked him, and said to him, "Go up, you baldy! Go up, you baldhead!" | Then from there he went up to Beth-el; and on his way, some little boys came out from the town and made sport of him, crying, Go up, old no-hair! go up, old no-hair! | |||

ויפן אחריו ויראם ויקללם בשם יהוה ותצאנה שתים דבים מן־היער ותבקענה מהם ארבעים ושני ילדים׃ |
And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. | He looked behind him and saw them, and cursed them in the name of Yahweh. Two female bears came out of the woods, and mauled forty-two of those youths. | And turning back, he saw them, and put a curse on them in the name of the Lord. And two she-bears came out of the wood and put forty-two of the children to death. | |||

וילך משם אל־הר הכרמל ומשם שב שמרון׃ |
