1.    ויהורם  בן־אחאב 
מלך  על־ישראל
בשמרון  בשנת  שמנה
עשרה  ליהושפט  מלך
יהודה  וימלך
שתים־עשרה  שנה׃
    Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.     Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.     And Jehoram, the son of Ahab, became king over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of the rule of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah; and he was king for twelve years.
 
2.    ויעשה  הרע  בעיני 
יהוה  רק  לא  כאביו
וכאמו  ויסר
את־מצבת  הבעל  אשר
עשה  אביו׃
    And he wrought evil in the sight of the LORD; but not like his father, and like his mother: for he put away the image of Baal that his father had made.     He did that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, but not like his father, and like his mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made.     He did evil in the eyes of the Lord; but not like his father and his mother, for he put away the stone pillar of Baal which his father had made.
 
3.    רק  בחטאות  ירבעם 
בן־נבט  אשר־החטיא
את־ישראל  דבק
לא־סר  ממנה׃
    Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.     Nevertheless he cleaved to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin; he didn't depart from it.     But still he did the same sins which Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, did and made Israel do; he went on in them.
 
4.    ומישע  מלך־מואב 
היה  נקד  והשיב
למלך־ישראל
מאה־אלף  כרים  ומאה
אלף  אילים  צמר׃
    And Mesha king of Moab was a sheepmaster, and rendered unto the king of Israel an hundred thousand lambs, and an hundred thousand rams, with the wool.     Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder; and he rendered to the king of Israel the wool of one hundred thousand lambs, and of one hundred thousand rams.     Now Mesha, king of Moab, was a sheep-farmer; and he gave regularly to the king of Israel the wool from a hundred thousand lambs and a hundred thousand sheep.
 
5.    ויהי  כמות  אחאב 
ויפשע  מלך־מואב
במלך  ישראל׃
    But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.     But it happened, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.     But when Ahab was dead, the king of Moab got free from the authority of the king of Israel.
 
6.    ויצא  המלך  יהורם 
ביום  ההוא  משמרון
ויפקד
את־כל־ישראל׃
    And king Jehoram went out of Samaria the same time, and numbered all Israel.     King Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.     At that time, King Jehoram went out from Samaria and got all Israel together in fighting order.
 
7.    וילך  וישלח 
אל־יהושפט
מלך־יהודה  לאמר
מלך  מואב  פשע  בי
התלך  אתי  אל־מואב
למלחמה  ויאמר  אעלה
כמוני  כמוך  כעמי
כעמך  כסוסי
כסוסיך׃
    And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab hath rebelled against me: wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle? And he said, I will go up: I am as thou art, my people as thy people, and my horses as thy horses.     He went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying, "The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me against Moab to battle?" He said, "I will go up. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses."     And he sent to Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, saying, The king of Moab has got free from my authority: will you go with me to make war on Moab? And he said, I will go with you: I am as you are, my people as your people, and my horses as your horses.
 
8.    ויאמר  אי־זה  הדרך 
נעלה  ויאמר  דרך
מדבר  אדום׃
    And he said, Which way shall we go up? And he answered, The way through the wilderness of Edom.     He said, "Which way shall we go up?" He answered, "The way of the wilderness of Edom."     And he said, Which way are we to go? And he said in answer, By the waste land of Edom.
 
9.    וילך  מלך  ישראל 
ומלך־יהודה  ומלך
אדום  ויסבו  דרך
שבעת  ימים  ולא־
היה  מים  למחנה
ולבהמה  אשר
ברגליהם׃
    So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.     So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days' journey. There was no water for the army, nor for the animals that followed them.     So the king of Israel went with the king of Judah and the king of Edom by a roundabout way for seven days: and there was no water for the army or for the beasts they had with them.
 
10.    ויאמר  מלך  ישראל 
אהה  כי־קרא  יהוה
לשלשת  המלכים  האלה
לתת  אותם
ביד־מואב׃
    And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!     The king of Israel said, "Alas! For Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab."     And the king of Israel said, Here is trouble: for the Lord has got these three kings together to give them into the hands of Moab.
 
11.    ויאמר  יהושפט  האין 
פה  נביא  ליהוה
ונדרשה  את־יהוה
מאותו  ויען  אחד
מעבדי  מלך־ישראל
ויאמר  פה  אלישע
בן־שפט  אשר־יצק
מים  על־ידי  אליהו׃
    But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah.     But Jehoshaphat said, "Isn't there here a prophet of Yahweh, that we may inquire of Yahweh by him?" One of the king of Israel's servants answered, "Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah."     But Jehoshaphat said, Is there no prophet of the Lord here, through whom we may get directions from the Lord? And one of the king of Israel's men said in answer, Elisha, the son of Shaphat, is here, who was servant to Elijah.
 
12.    ויאמר  יהושפט  יש 
אותו  דבר־יהוה
וירדו  אליו  מלך
ישראל  ויהושפט
ומלך  אדום׃
    And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the LORD is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.     Jehoshaphat said, "The word of Yahweh is with him." So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.     And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the Lord is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.
 
13.    ויאמר  אלישע 
אל־מלך  ישראל
מה־לי  ולך  לך
אל־נביאי  אביך
ואל־  נביאי  אמך
ויאמר  לו  מלך
ישראל  אל  כי־קרא
יהוה  לשלשת  המלכים
האלה  לתת  אותם
ביד־מואב׃
    And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab.     Elisha said to the king of Israel, "What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father, and to the prophets of your mother." The king of Israel said to him, "No; for Yahweh has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab."     But Elisha said to the king of Israel, What have I to do with you? go to the prophets of your father and your mother. And the king of Israel said, No; for the Lord has got these three kings together to give them up into the hands of Moab.
 
14.    ויאמר  אלישע 
חי־יהוה  צבאות  אשר
עמדתי  לפניו  כי
לולי  פני  יהושפט
מלך־יהודה  אני  נשא
אם־אביט  אליך
ואם־אראך׃
    And Elisha said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.     Elisha said, "As Yahweh of Armies lives, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I respect the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward you, nor see you.     Then Elisha said, By the life of the Lord of armies whose servant I am, if it was not for the respect I have for Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, I would not give a look at you, or see you.
 
15.    ועתה  קחו־לי  מנגן 
והיה  כנגן  המנגן
ותהי  עליו
יד־יהוה׃
    But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.     But now bring me a minstrel." It happened, when the minstrel played, that the hand of Yahweh came on him.     But now, get me a player of music, and it will come about that while the man is playing, the hand of the Lord will come on me and I will give you the word of the Lord: and they got a player of music, and while the man was playing, the hand of the Lord was on him.
 
16.    ויאמר  כה  אמר  יהוה 
עשה  הנחל  הזה  גבים
גבים׃
    And he said, Thus saith the LORD, Make this valley full of ditches.     He said, "Thus says Yahweh, 'Make this valley full of trenches.'     And he said, The Lord says, I will make this valley full of water-holes.
 
17.    כי־כה  אמר  יהוה 
לא־תראו  רוח
ולא־תראו  גשם
והנחל  ההוא  ימלא
מים  ושתיתם  אתם
ומקניכם  ובהמתכם׃
    For thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.     For thus says Yahweh, 'You will not see wind, neither will you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, and you will drink, both you and your livestock and your animals.     For the Lord says, Though you see no wind or rain, the valley will be full of water, and you and your armies and your beasts will have drink.
 
18.    ונקל  זאת  בעיני 
יהוה  ונתן  את־מואב
בידכם׃
    And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.     This is but a light thing in the sight of Yahweh. He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.     And this will be only a small thing to the Lord: in addition he will give the Moabites into your hands.
 
19.    והכיתם  כל־עיר 
מבצר  וכל־עיר
מבחור  וכל־עץ  טוב
תפילו  וכל־מעיני־
מים  תסתמו  וכל
החלקה  הטובה  תכאבו
באבנים׃
    And ye shall smite every fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.     You shall strike every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all springs of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.'"     And you are to put every walled town to destruction, cutting down every good tree, and stopping up every water-spring, and making all the good land rough with stones.
 
20.    ויהי  בבקר  כעלות 
המנחה  והנה־מים
באים  מדרך  אדום
ותמלא  הארץ  את־
המים׃
    And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.     It happened in the morning, about the time of offering the offering, that behold, water came by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.     Now in the morning, about the time when the offering was made, they saw water flowing from the direction of Edom till the country was full of water.
 
21.    וכל־מואב  שמעו 
כי־עלו  המלכים
להלחם  בם  ויצעקו
מכל  חגר  חגרה
ומעלה  ויעמדו
על־הגבול׃
    And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border.     Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all who were able to put on armor, and upward, and stood on the border.     Now all Moab, hearing that the kings had come to make war against them, got together all who were able to take up arms and went forward to the edge of the country.
 
22.    וישכימו  בבקר 
והשמש  זרחה
על־המים  ויראו
מואב  מנגד  את־המים
אדמים  כדם׃
    And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood:     They rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone on the water, and the Moabites saw the water over against them as red as blood.     And early in the morning they got up, when the sun was shining on the water, and they saw the water facing them as red as blood.
 
23.    ויאמרו  דם  זה  החרב 
נחרבו  המלכים  ויכו
איש  את־רעהו  ועתה
לשלל  מואב׃
    And they said, This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.     They said, "This is blood. The kings are surely destroyed, and they have struck each other. Now therefore, Moab, to the spoil!"     Then they said, This is blood: it is clear that destruction has come on the kings; they have been fighting one another: now come, Moab, let us take their goods.
 
24.    ויבאו  אל־מחנה 
ישראל  ויקמו  ישראל
ויכו  את־מואב
וינסו  מפניהם
ויבו־בה  והכות
את־מואב׃
    And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their country.     When they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and struck the Moabites, so that they fled before them; and they went forward into the land smiting the Moabites.     But when they came to the tents of Israel, the Israelites came out and made a violent attack on the Moabites, so that they went in flight before them; and they went forward still attacking them;
 
25.    והערים  יהרסו 
וכל־חלקה  טובה
ישליכו  איש־אבנו
ומלאוה  וכל־מעין־
מים  יסתמו
וכל־עץ־טוב  יפילו
עד־השאיר  אבניה
בקיר  חרשת  ויסבו
הקלעים  ויכוה׃
    And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it.     They beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the springs of water, and felled all the good trees, until in Kir Hareseth [only] they left its stones; however the men armed with slings went about it, and struck it.     Pulling down the towns, covering every good field with stones, stopping up all the water-springs, and cutting down all the good trees; they went on driving Moab before them till only in Kir-hareseth were there any Moabites; and the fighting-men went round the town raining stones on it.
 
26.    וירא  מלך  מואב 
כי־חזק  ממנו
המלחמה  ויקח  אותו
שבע־מאות  איש  שלף
חרב  להבקיע  אל־מלך
אדום  ולא  יכלו׃
    And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not.     When the king of Moab saw that the battle was too severe for him, he took with him seven hundred men who drew sword, to break through to the king of Edom; but they could not.     And when the king of Moab saw that the fight was going against him, he took with him seven hundred men armed with swords, with the idea of forcing a way through to the king of Aram, but they were not able to do so.
 
27.    ויקח  את־בנו  הבכור 
אשר־ימלך  תחתיו
ויעלהו  עלה
על־החמה  ויהי  קצף־
גדול  על־ישראל
ויסעו  מעליו  וישבו
לארץ׃
    Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.     Then he took his eldest son who would have reigned in his place, and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. There was great wrath against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.     Then he took his oldest son, who would have been king after him, offering him as a burned offering on the wall. So there was great wrath against Israel; and they went away from him, back to their country.
