1.    אחרי  הדברים  והאמת 
האלה  בא  סנחריב
מלך־אשור  ויבא
ביהודה  ויחן  על־
הערים  הבצרות
ויאמר  לבקעם  אליו׃
    After these things, and the establishment thereof, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fenced cities, and thought to win them for himself.     After these things, and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fortified cities, and thought to win them for himself.     Now after these things and this true-hearted work, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, came into Judah, and put his army in position before the walled towns of Judah, designing to make his way into them by force.
 
2.    וירא  יחזקיהו 
כי־בא  סנחריב
ופניו  למלחמה
על־ירושלם׃
    And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,     When Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,     And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come for the purpose of fighting against Jerusalem,
 
3.    ויועץ  עם־שריו 
וגבריו  לסתום
את־מימי  העינות
אשר  מחוץ  לעיר
ויעזרוהו׃
    He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.     he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the springs which were outside of the city; and they helped him.     He took up with his rulers and men of war the question of stopping up the water-springs outside the town; and they gave him their support.
 
4.    ויקבצו  עם־רב 
ויסתמו
את־כל־המעינות
ואת־הנחל  השוטף
בתוך־הארץ  לאמר
למה  יבואו  מלכי
אשור  ומצאו  מים
רבים׃
    So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?     So there was gathered much people together, and they stopped all the springs, and the brook that flowed through the midst of the land, saying, "Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?"     So they got together a great number of people, and had all the water-springs and the stream flowing through the land stopped up, saying, Why let the kings of Assyria come and have much water?
 
5.    ויתחזק  ויבן 
את־כל־החומה
הפרוצה  ויעל
על־המגדלות  ולחוצה
החומה  אחרת  ויחזק
את־המלוא  עיר  דויד
ויעש  שלח  לרב
ומגנים׃
    Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.     He took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised [it] up to the towers, and the other wall outside, and strengthened Millo [in] the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.     Then he took heart, building up the wall where it was broken down, and making its towers higher, and building another wall outside; and he made strong the Millo in the town of David, and got together a great store of all sorts of instruments of war.
 
6.    ויתן  שרי  מלחמות 
על־העם  ויקבצם
אליו  אל־רחוב  שער
העיר  וידבר  על־
לבבם  לאמר׃
    And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city, and spake comfortably to them, saying,     He set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the broad place at the gate of the city, and spoke comfortably to them, saying,     And he put war chiefs over the people, and sent for them all to come together to him in the wide place at the doorway into the town, and to give them heart he said to them,
 
7.    חזקו  ואמצו 
אל־תיראו  ואל־תחתו
מפני  מלך  אשור
ומלפני  כל־ההמון
אשר־עמו  כי־עמנו
רב  מעמו׃
    Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:     "Be strong and of good courage, don't be afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude who is with him; for there is a greater with us than with him.     Be strong and take heart; have no fear, and do not be troubled on account of the king of Assyria and all the great army with him: for there is a greater with us.
 
8.    עמו  זרוע  בשר 
ועמנו  יהוה  אלהינו
לעזרנו  ולהלחם
מלחמתנו  ויסמכו
העם  על־דברי
יחזקיהו
מלך־יהודה׃
    With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.     With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is Yahweh our God to help us, and to fight our battles." The people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.     With him is an arm of flesh; but we have the Lord our God, helping us and fighting for us. And the people put their faith in what Hezekiah, king of Judah, said.
 
9.    אחר  זה  שלח  סנחריב 
מלך־אשור  עבדיו
ירושלימה  והוא
על־לכיש  וכל־
ממשלתו  עמו
על־יחזקיהו  מלך
יהודה
ועל־כל־יהודה  אשר
בירושלם  לאמר׃
    After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege against Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,     After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (now he was before Lachish, and all his power with him), to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah who were at Jerusalem, saying,     After this, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent his servants to Jerusalem (at that time he was stationed with all his army in front of Lachish), to say to Hezekiah and all the men of Judah in Jerusalem,
 
10.    כה  אמר  סנחריב  מלך 
אשור  על־מה  אתם
בטחים  וישבים
במצור  בירושלם׃
    Thus saith Sennacherib king of Assyria, Whereon do ye trust, that ye abide in the siege in Jerusalem?     Thus says Sennacherib king of Assyria, "In whom do you trust, that you remain under siege in Jerusalem?     Sennacherib, king of Assyria, says, In what are you placing your hope, waiting here in the walled town of Jerusalem?
 
11.    הלא  יחזקיהו  מסית 
אתכם  לתת  אתכם
למות  ברעב  ובצמא
לאמר  יהוה  אלהינו
יצילנו  מכף  מלך
אשור׃
    Doth not Hezekiah persuade you to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?     Doesn't Hezekiah persuade you, to give you over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, 'Yahweh our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?'     Is it not Hezekiah who has got you to do it, causing your death from need of food and water, by saying, The Lord our God will give us salvation out of the hands of the king of Assyria?
 
12.    הלא־הוא  יחזקיהו 
הסיר  את־במתיו
ואת־מזבחתיו  ויאמר
ליהודה  ולירושלם
לאמר  לפני  מזבח
אחד  תשתחוו  ועליו
תקטירו׃
    Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?     Hasn't the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, 'You shall worship before one altar, and on it you shall burn incense?'     Has not this same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, Give worship before one altar only, burning offerings on it?
 
13.    הלא  תדעו  מה  עשיתי 
אני  ואבותי  לכל
עמי  הארצות  היכול
יכלו  אלהי  גוי
הארצות  להציל
את־ארצם  מידי׃
    Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?     Don't you know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any way able to deliver their land out of my hand?     Have you no knowledge of what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of every land? were the gods of the nations of those lands able to keep their land from falling into my hands?
 
14.    מי  בכל־אלהי  הגוים 
האלה  אשר  החרימו
אבותי  אשר  יכול
להציל  את־  עמו
מידי  כי  יוכל
אלהיכם  להציל  אתכם
מידי׃
    Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?     Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand?     Who was there among all the gods of those nations, which my fathers put to destruction, who was able to keep his people safe from my hands? and is it possible that your God will keep you safe from my hands?
 
15.    ועתה  אל־ישיא  אתכם 
חזקיהו  ואל־יסית
אתכם  כזאת
ואל־תאמינו  לו  כי־
לא  יוכל  כל־אלוה
כל־גוי  וממלכה
להציל  עמו  מידי
ומיד  אבותי  אף  כי
אלהיכם  לא־יצילו
אתכם  מידי׃
    Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?     Now therefore don't let Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you after this manner, neither believe him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you out of my hand?"     So do not be tricked by Hezekiah or let him get you to do this, and do not put any faith in what he says: for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to keep his people safe from my hands, or the hands of my fathers: how much less will your God keep you safe from my hands!
 
16.    ועוד  דברו  עבדיו 
על־יהוה  האלהים
ועל  יחזקיהו  עבדו׃
    And his servants spake yet more against the LORD God, and against his servant Hezekiah.     His servants spoke yet more against Yahweh God, and against his servant Hezekiah.     And his servants said even more against the Lord God and against his servant Hezekiah.
 
17.    וספרים  כתב  לחרף 
ליהוה  אלהי  ישראל
ולאמר  עליו  לאמר
כאלהי  גוי  הארצות
אשר  לא־הצילו  עמם
מידי  כן  לא־יציל
אלהי  יחזקיהו  עמו
מידי׃
    He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.     He also wrote letters insulting Yahweh, the God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, "As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall the God of Hezekiah not deliver his people out of my hand."     And he sent letters, in addition, to put shame on the Lord, the God of Israel, and to say evil against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not been able to keep their people safe from my hands, no more will the God of Hezekiah keep his people safe from my hands.
 
18.    ויקראו  בקול־גדול 
יהודית  על־עם
ירושלם  אשר
על־החומה  ליראם
ולבהלם  למען  ילכדו
את־העיר׃
    Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.     They cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.     These things they said, crying out with a loud voice in the Jews' language, to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, with the purpose of troubling them and putting fear into them, so that they might take the town;
 
19.    וידברו  אל־אלהי 
ירושלם  כעל  אלהי
עמי  הארץ  מעשה  ידי
האדם׃
    And they spake against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.     They spoke of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men's hands.     Talking of the God of Jerusalem as if he was like the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of men's hands.
 
20.    ויתפלל  יחזקיהו 
המלך  וישעיהו
בן־אמוץ  הנביא
על־זאת  ויזעקו
השמים׃
    And for this cause Hezekiah the king, and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz, prayed and cried to heaven.     Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried to heaven.     And Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, made prayer because of this, crying out to heaven.
 
21.    וישלח  יהוה  מלאך 
ויכחד  כל־גבור  חיל
ונגיד  ושר  במחנה
מלך  אשור  וישב
בבשת  פנים  לארצו
ויבא  בית  אלהיו
ומיציאו  מעיו  שם
הפילהו  בחרב׃
    And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.     Yahweh sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. When he had come into the house of his god, those who came forth from his own bowels killed him there with the sword.     And the Lord sent an angel who put to death all the men of war and the chiefs and the captains in the army of the king of Assyria. So he went back to his country in shame. And when he came into the house of his god, his sons, the offspring of his body, put him to death there with the sword.
 
22.    ויושע  יהוה 
את־יחזקיהו  ואת
ישבי  ירושלם  מיד
סנחריב  מלך־אשור
ומיד־כל  וינהלם
מסביב׃
    Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side.     Thus Yahweh saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all [others], and guided them on every side.     So the Lord gave Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem salvation from the power of Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, and from all others, giving them rest on every side.
 
23.    ורבים  מביאים  מנחה 
ליהוה  לירושלם
ומגדנות  ליחזקיהו
מלך  יהודה  וינשא
לעיני  כל־הגוים
מאחרי־כן׃
    And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerusalem, and presents to Hezekiah king of Judah: so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.     Many brought gifts to Yahweh to Jerusalem, and precious things to Hezekiah king of Judah; so that he was exalted in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.     And great numbers came to Jerusalem with offerings for the Lord, and things of great price for Hezekiah, king of Judah: so that he was honoured among all nations from that time.
 
24.    בימים  ההם  חלה 
יחזקיהו  עד־למות
ויתפלל  אל־יהוה
ויאמר  לו  ומופת
נתן  לו׃
    In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.     In those days Hezekiah was sick even to death: and he prayed to Yahweh; and he spoke to him, and gave him a sign.     In those days Hezekiah was ill and near death; and he made prayer to the Lord, and the Lord in answer gave him a sign.
 
25.    ולא־כגמל  עליו 
השיב  יחזקיהו  כי
גבה  לבו  ויהי  עליו
קצף  ועל־  יהודה
וירושלם׃
    But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.     But Hezekiah didn't render again according to the benefit done to him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath on him, and on Judah and Jerusalem.     But Hezekiah did not do as had been done to him; for his heart was lifted up in pride; and so wrath came on him and on Judah and Jerusalem.
 
26.    ויכנע  יחזקיהו 
בגבה  לבו  הוא
וישבי  ירושלם
ולא־בא  עליהם  קצף
יהוה  בימי
יחזקיהו׃
    Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.     Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of Yahweh didn't come on them in the days of Hezekiah.     But then, Hezekiah, in sorrow for what he had done, put away his pride; and he and all Jerusalem made themselves low, so that the wrath of the Lord did not come on them in Hezekiah's life-time.
 
27.    ויהי  ליחזקיהו  עשר 
וכבוד  הרבה  מאד
ואצרות  עשה־לו
לכסף  ולזהב  ולאבן
יקרה  ולבשמים
ולמגנים  ולכל  כלי
חמדה׃
    And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour: and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels;     Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honor: and he provided him treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of goodly vessels;     And Hezekiah had very great wealth and honour; and he made himself store-houses for his gold and silver and jewels and spices, and for body-covers and all sorts of beautiful vessels.
 
28.    ומסכנות  לתבואת 
דגן  ותירוש  ויצהר
וארות  לכל־בהמה
ובהמה  ועדרים
לאורות׃
    Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and cotes for flocks.     storehouses also for the increase of grain and new wine and oil; and stalls for all manner of animals, and flocks in folds.     And store-houses for the produce of grain and wine and oil; and buildings for all sorts of beasts and flocks.
 
29.    וערים  עשה  לו 
ומקנה־צאן  ובקר
לרב  כי  נתן־לו
אלהים  רכוש  רב
מאד׃
    Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.     Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance; for God had given him very much substance.     And he made towns for himself, and got together much property in flocks and herds: for God had given him great wealth.
 
30.    והוא  יחזקיהו  סתם 
את־מוצא  מימי
גיחון  העליון
ויישרם  למטה־מערבה
לעיר  דויד  ויצלח

בכל־מעשהו׃
    This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper watercourse of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.     This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper spring of the waters of Gihon, and brought them straight down on the west side of the city of David. Hezekiah prospered in all his works.     It was Hezekiah who had the higher spring of the water of Gihon stopped, and the water taken down on the west side of the town of David. In everything he undertook, Hezekiah did well.
 
31.    וכן  במליצי  שרי 
בבל  המשלחים  עליו
לדרש  המופת  אשר
היה  בארץ  עזבו
האלהים  לנסותו
לדעת  כל־בלבבו׃
    Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to enquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.     However in [the business of] the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent to him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.     However, in the business of the representatives sent by the rulers of Babylon to get news of the wonder which had taken place in the land, God gave up guiding him, testing him to see what was in his heart.
 
32.    ויתר  דברי  יחזקיהו 
וחסדיו  הנם  כתובים
בחזון  ישעיהו
בן־אמוץ  הנביא
על־ספר  מלכי־יהודה
וישראל׃
    Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.     Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his good deeds, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.     Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and the good he did, are recorded in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
 
33.    וישכב  יחזקיהו 
עם־אבתיו  ויקברהו
במעלה  קברי
בני־דויד  וכבוד
עשו־  לו  במותו
כל־יהודה  וישבי
ירושלם  וימלך  מנשה
בנו  תחתיו׃
    And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.     Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honor at his death. Manasseh his son reigned in his place.     So Hezekiah went to rest with his fathers, and they put his body into the higher part of the resting-places of the sons of David: and all Judah and the people of Jerusalem gave him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son became king in his place.
