1.    הוי  בנים  סוררים 
נאם־יהוה  לעשות
עצה  ולא  מני  ולנסך
מסכה  ולא  רוחי
למען  ספות  חטאת
על־חטאת׃
    Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:     "Woe to the rebellious children," says Yahweh, "who take counsel, but not from me; and who make an alliance, but not with my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin,     Ho! uncontrolled children, says the Lord, who give effect to a purpose which is not mine, and who make an agreement, but not by my spirit, increasing their sin:
 
2.    ההלכים  לרדת  מצרים 
ופי  לא  שאלו  לעוז
במעוז  פרעה  ולחסות
בצל  מצרים׃
    That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt!     who set out to go down into Egypt, and have not asked my advice; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt!     Who make a move to go down into Egypt, without authority from me; who are looking to the strength of Pharaoh for help, and whose hope is in the shade of Egypt.
 
3.    והיה  לכם  מעוז 
פרעה  לבשת  והחסות
בצל־מצרים  לכלמה׃
    Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.     Therefore the strength of Pharaoh will be your shame, and the refuge in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.     And the strength of Pharaoh will be your shame, and your hope in the shade of Egypt will come to nothing.
 
4.    כי־היו  בצען  שריו 
ומלאכיו  חנס
יגיעו׃
    For his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came to Hanes.     For their princes are at Zoan, and their ambassadors have come to Hanes.     For his chiefs are at Zoan, and his representatives have come to Hanes.
 
5.    כל  הבאיש  על־עם 
לא־יועילו  למו  לא
לעזר  ולא  להועיל
כי  לבשת  וגם־
לחרפה׃
    They were all ashamed of a people that could not profit them, nor be an help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach.     They shall all be ashamed because of a people that can't profit them, that are not a help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach."     For they have all come with offerings to a people of no use to them, in whom is no help or profit, but only shame and a bad name.
 
6.    משא  בהמות  נגב 
בארץ  צרה  וצוקה
לביא  וליש  מהם
אפעה  ושרף  מעופף
ישאו  על־כתף  עירים
חילהם  ועל־דבשת
גמלים  אוצרתם
על־עם  לא  יועילו׃
    The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.     The burden of the animals of the South. Through the land of trouble and anguish, of the lioness and the lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they carry their riches on the shoulders of young donkeys, and their treasures on the humps of camels, to an unprofitable people.     The word about the Beasts of the South. Through the land of trouble and grief, the land of the she-lion and the voice of the lion, of the snake and the burning winged snake, they take their wealth on the backs of young asses, and their stores on camels, to a people in whom is no profit.
 
7.    ומצרים  הבל  וריק 
יעזרו  לכן  קראתי
לזאת  רהב  הם  שבת׃
    For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.     For Egypt helps in vain, and to no purpose; therefore have I called her Rahab who sits still.     For there is no use or purpose in the help of Egypt: so I have said about her, She is Rahab, who has come to an end.
 
8.    עתה  בוא  כתבה 
על־לוח  אתם
ועל־ספר  חקה  ותהי
ליום  אחרון  לעד
עד־  עולם׃
    Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:     Now go, write it before them on a tablet, and inscribe it in a book, that it may be for the time to come forever and ever.     Now go, put it in writing before them on a board, and make a record of it in a book, so that it may be for the future, a witness for all time to come.
 
9.    כי  עם  מרי  הוא 
בנים  כחשים  בנים
לא־אבו  שמוע  תורת
יהוה׃
    That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:     For it is a rebellious people, lying children, children who will not hear the law of Yahweh;     For they are an uncontrolled people, false-hearted, who will not give ear to the teaching of the Lord:
 
10.    אשר  אמרו  לראים  לא 
תראו  ולחזים  לא
תחזו־לנו  נכחות
דברו־לנו  חלקות
חזו  מהתלות׃
    Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:     who tell the seers, "Don't see!" and to the prophets, "Don't prophesy to us right things. Tell us pleasant things. Prophesy deceits.     Who say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Do not give us word of what is true, but say false things to give us pleasure:
 
11.    סורו  מני־דרך  הטו 
מני־ארח  השביתו
מפנינו  את־קדוש
ישראל׃
    Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.     Get out of the way. Turn aside from the path. Cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us."     Get out of the good way, turning from the right road; do not keep the Holy One of Israel before our minds.
 
12.    לכן  כה  אמר  קדוש 
ישראל  יען  מאסכם
בדבר  הזה  ותבטחו
בעשק  ונלוז  ותשענו
עליו׃
    Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon:     Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel, "Because you despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and rely on it;     For this cause the Holy One of Israel says, Because you will not give ear to this word, and are looking for help in ways of deceit and evil, and are putting your hope in them:
 
13.    לכן  יהיה  לכם  העון 
הזה  כפרץ  נפל  נבעה
בחומה  נשגבה
אשר־פתאם  לפתע
יבוא  שברה׃
    Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.     therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly in an instant.     This sin will be to you like a crack in a high wall, causing its fall suddenly and in a minute.
 
14.    ושברה  כשבר  נבל 
יוצרים  כתות  לא
יחמל  ולא־ימצא
במכתתו  חרש  לחתות
אש  מיקוד  ולחשף
מים  מגבא׃
    And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters' vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit.     He will break it as a potter's vessel is broken, breaking it in pieces without sparing, so that there won't be found among the broken piece a piece good enough to take fire from the hearth, or to dip up water out of the cistern."     And he will let it be broken as a potter's vessel is broken: it will be smashed to bits without mercy; so that there will not be a bit in which one may take fire from the fireplace, or water from the spring.
 
15.    כי  כה־אמר  אדני 
יהוה  קדוש  ישראל
בשובה  ונחת  תושעון
בהשקט  ובבטחה  תהיה
גבורתכם  ולא
אביתם׃
    For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.     For thus said the Lord Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, "You will be saved in returning and rest. Your strength will be in quietness and in confidence." You refused,     For the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, said, In quiet and rest is your salvation: peace and hope are your strength: but you would not have it so.
 
16.    ותאמרו  לא־כי 
על־סוס  ננוס  על־כן
תנוסון  ועל־קל
נרכב  על־כן  יקלו
רדפיכם׃
    But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.     but you said, "No, for we will flee on horses;" therefore you will flee; and, "We will ride on the swift;" therefore those who pursue you will be swift.     Saying, No, for we will go in flight on horses; so you will certainly go in flight: and, We will go on the backs of quick-running beasts; so those who go after you will be quick-footed.
 
17.    אלף  אחד  מפני  גערת 
אחד  מפני  גערת
חמשה  תנסו  עד
אם־נותרתם  כתרן
על־ראש  ההר  וכנס
על־הגבעה׃
    One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall ye flee: till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on an hill.     One thousand will flee at the threat of one. At the threat of five, you will flee until you are left like a beacon on the top of a mountain, and like a banner on a hill.     A thousand will go in fear before one; even before five you will go in flight: till you are like a pillar by itself on the top of a mountain, and like a flag on a hill.
 
18.    ולכן  יחכה  יהוה 
לחננכם  ולכן  ירום
לרחמכם  כי־אלהי
משפט  יהוה  אשרי
כל־חוכי  לו׃
    And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.     Therefore Yahweh will wait, that he may be gracious to you; and therefore he will be exalted, that he may have mercy on you, for Yahweh is a God of justice. Blessed are all those who wait for him.     For this cause the Lord will be waiting, so that he may be kind to you; and he will be lifted up, so that he may have mercy on you; for the Lord is a God of righteousness: there is a blessing on all whose hope is in him.
 
19.    כי־עם  בציון  ישב 
בירושלם  בכו
לא־תבכה  חנון  יחנך
לקול  זעקך  כשמעתו
ענך׃
    For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem: thou shalt weep no more: he will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when he shall hear it, he will answer thee.     For the people will dwell in Zion at Jerusalem. You will weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the voice of your cry. When he hears you, he will answer you.     O people, living in Zion, at Jerusalem, your weeping will be ended; he will certainly have mercy on you at the sound of your cry; when it comes to his ear, he will give you an answer.
 
20.    ונתן  לכם  אדני  לחם 
צר  ומים  לחץ
ולא־יכנף  עוד
מוריך  והיו  עיניך
ראות  את־מוריך׃
    And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers:     Though the Lord may give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your teachers won't be hidden anymore, but your eyes will see your teachers;     And though the Lord will give you the bread of trouble and the water of grief, you will no longer put your teacher on one side, but you will see your teacher:
 
21.    ואזניך  תשמענה  דבר 
מאחריך  לאמר  זה
הדרך  לכו  בו  כי
תאמינו  וכי
תשמאילו׃
    And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.     and when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the way. Walk in it."     And at your back, when you are turning to the right hand or to the left, a voice will be sounding in your ears, saying, This is the way in which you are to go.
 
22.    וטמאתם  את־צפוי 
פסילי  כספך
ואת־אפדת  מסכת
זהבך  תזרם  כמו  דוה
צא  תאמר  לו׃
    Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.     You shall defile the overlaying of your engraved images of silver, and the plating of your molten images of gold. You shall cast them away as an unclean thing. You shall tell it, "Go away!"     And you will make unclean what is covering your pictured images of silver, and the plating of your images of gold: you will send them away as an unclean thing, saying, Be gone!
 
23.    ונתן  מטר  זרעך 
אשר־תזרע  את־האדמה
ולחם  תבואת  האדמה
והיה  דשן  ושמן
ירעה  מקניך  ביום
ההוא  כר  נרחב׃
    Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt sow the ground withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.     He will give the rain for your seed, with which you will sow the ground; and bread of the increase of the ground will be rich and plentiful. In that day, your livestock will feed in large pastures.     And he will give rain for your seed, so that you may put it in the earth; and you will have bread from the produce of the earth, good and more than enough for your needs: in that day the cattle will get their food in wide grass-lands.
 
24.    והאלפים  והעירים 
עבדי  האדמה  בליל
חמיץ  יאכלו
אשר־זרה  ברחת
ובמזרה׃
    The oxen likewise and the young asses that ear the ground shall eat clean provender, which hath been winnowed with the shovel and with the fan.     The oxen likewise and the young donkeys that till the ground will eat savory provender, which has been winnowed with the shovel and with the fork.     And the oxen and the young asses which are used for ploughing, will have salted grain which has been made free from the waste with fork and basket.
 
25.    והיה  על־כל־הר  גבה 
ועל  כל־גבעה  נשאה
פלגים  יבלי־מים
ביום  הרג  רב  בנפל
מגדלים׃
    And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill, rivers and streams of waters in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.     There shall be brooks and streams of water on every lofty mountain and on every high hill in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.     And there will be rivers and streams of water on every tall mountain and on every high hill, in the day when great numbers are put to the sword, when the towers come down.
 
26.    והיה  אור־הלבנה 
כאור  החמה  ואור
החמה  יהיה  שבעתים
כאור  שבעת  הימים
ביום  חבש  יהוה
את־שבר  עמו  ומחץ
מכתו  ירפא׃
    Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.     Moreover the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven days, in the day that Yahweh binds up the fracture of his people, and heals the wound they were struck with.     And the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times greater, as the light of seven days, in the day when the Lord puts oil on the wounds of his people, and makes them well from the blows they have undergone.
 
27.    הנה  שם־יהוה  בא 
ממרחק  בער  אפו
וכבד  משאה  שפתיו
מלאו  זעם  ולשונו
כאש  אכלת׃
    Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:     Behold, the name of Yahweh comes from far away, burning with his anger, and in thick rising smoke. His lips are full of indignation, and his tongue is as a devouring fire.     See, the name of the Lord is coming from far, burning with his wrath, with thick smoke going up: his lips are full of passion, and his tongue is like a burning fire:
 
28.    ורוחו  כנחל  שוטף 
עד־צואר  יחצה
להנפה  גוים  בנפת
שוא  ורסן  מתעה  על
לחיי  עמים׃
    And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity: and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err.     His breath is as an overflowing stream that reaches even to the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction; and a bridle that leads to ruin will be in the jaws of the peoples.     And his breath is as an overflowing stream, coming up even to the neck, shaking the nations for their destruction, like the shaking of grain in a basket: and he will put a cord in the mouths of the people, turning them out of their way.
 
29.    השיר  יהיה  לכם 
כליל  התקדש־חג
ושמחת  לבב  כהולך
בחליל  לבוא  בהר־
יהוה  אל־צור
ישראל׃
    Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the LORD, to the mighty One of Israel.     You will have a song, as in the night when a holy feast is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goes with a flute to come to Yahweh's mountain, to Israel's Rock.     You will have a song, as in the night when a holy feast is kept; and you will be glad in heart, as when they go with music of the pipe to the mountain of the Lord, the Rock of Israel.
 
30.    והשמיע  יהוה 
את־הוד  קולו  ונחת
זרועו  יראה  בזעף
אף  ולהב  אש  אוכלה
נפץ  וזרם  ואבן
ברד׃
    And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones.     Yahweh will cause his glorious voice to be heard, and will show the descent of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and the flame of a devouring fire, with a blast, storm, and hailstones.     And the Lord will send out the sound of his great voice, and they will see his arm stretched out, with the heat of his wrath, and the flame of a burning fire; with a cloud-burst, and storm, and a rain of ice.
 
31.    כי־מקול  יהוה  יחת 
אשור  בשבט  יכה׃
    For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod.     For through the voice of Yahweh the Assyrian will be dismayed. He will strike him with his rod.     For through the voice of the Lord the Assyrian will be broken, and the Lord's rod will be lifted up against him.
 
32.    והיה  כל  מעבר  מטה 
מוסדה  אשר  יניח
יהוה  עליו  בתפים
ובכנרות  ובמלחמות
תנופה  נלחם־בה׃
    And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight with it.     Every stroke of the rod of punishment, which Yahweh will lay on him, will be with the sound of tambourines and harps. He will fight with them in battles, brandishing weapons.     And every blow of the rod of his punishment, which the Lord will send on him, will be with the sound of music: and with the waving of his sword the Lord will make war against him.
 
33.    כי־ערוך  מאתמול 
תפתה  גם־הוא  למלך
הוכן  העמיק  הרחב
מדרתה  אש  ועצים
הרבה  נשמת  יהוה
כנחל  גפרית  בערה
בה׃
    For Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.     For his burning place has long been ready. Yes, for the king it is made ready. He has made its pyre deep and large with fire and much wood. Yahweh's breath, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.     For a place of fire has long been ready; yes, it has been made ready for the king; he has made it deep and wide: it is massed with fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of fire, puts a light to it.
