ויהי בארבע עשרה שנה למלך חזקיהו עלה סנחריב מלך־אשור על כל־ערי יהודה הבצרות ויתפשם׃ |

ויאמר אליהם רב־שקה אמרו־נא אל־חזקיהו כה־אמר המלך הגדול מלך אשור מה הבטחון הזה אשר בטחת׃ |
And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? | Rabshakeh said to them, "Now tell Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, "What confidence is this in which you trust? | And the Rab-shakeh said to them, Say now to Hezekiah, These are the words of the great king, the king of Assyria: In what are you placing your hope? | |||

אמרתי אך־דבר־שפתים עצה וגבורה למלחמה עתה על־מי בטחת כי מרדת בי׃ |
I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me? | I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me? | You say you have a design and strength for war, but these are only words: now to whom are you looking for support, that you have gone against my authority? | |||

הנה בטחת על־משענת הקנה הרצוץ הזה על־מצרים אשר יסמך איש עליו ובא בכפו ונקבה כן פרעה מלך־מצרים לכל־הבטחים עליו׃ |
Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him. | Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. | See, you are basing your hope on that broken rod of Egypt, which will go into a man's hand if he makes use of it for a support; for so is Pharaoh, king of Egypt, to all who put their faith in him. | |||

וכי־תאמר אלי אל־יהוה אלהינו בטחנו הלוא־הוא אשר הסיר חזקיהו את־ במתיו ואת־מזבחתיו ויאמר ליהודה ולירושלם לפני המזבח הזה תשתחוו׃ |
But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar? | But if you tell me, 'We trust in Yahweh our God,' isn't that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, 'You shall worship before this altar?'" | And if you say to me, Our hope is in the Lord our God; is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has taken away, saying to Judah and Jerusalem that worship may only be given before this altar? | |||

ועתה התערב נא את־אדני המלך אשור ואתנה לך אלפים סוסים אם־תוכל לתת לך רכבים עליהם׃ |
Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them. | Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them. | And now, take a chance with my master, the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able to put horsemen on them. | |||

ואיך תשיב את פני פחת אחד עבדי אדני הקטנים ותבטח לך על־מצרים לרכב ולפרשים׃ |
How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? | How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? | How then may you put to shame the least of my master's servants? and you have put your hope in Egypt for war-carriages and horsemen: | |||

ועתה המבלעדי יהוה עליתי על־הארץ הזאת להשחיתה יהוה אמר אלי עלה אל־הארץ הזאת והשחיתה׃ |
And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it. | Have I come up now without Yahweh against this land to destroy it? Yahweh said to me, "Go up against this land, and destroy it."'" | And have I now come to send destruction on this land without the Lord's authority? It was the Lord himself who said to me, Go up against this land and make it waste. | |||

ויאמר אליקים ושבנא ויואח אל־רב־שקה דבר־נא אל־עבדיך ארמית כי שמעים אנחנו ואל־תדבר אלינו יהודית באזני העם אשר על־החומה׃ |
Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews' language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall. | Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and don't speak to us in the Jews' language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall." | Then Eliakim and Shebna and Joah said to the Rab-shakeh, Please make use of the Aramaean language in talking to your servants, for we are used to it, and do not make use of the Jews' language in the hearing of the people on the wall. | |||

ויאמר רב־שקה האל אדניך ואליך שלחני אדני לדבר את־הדברים האלה הלא על־האנשים הישבים על־החומה לאכל את־חראיהם ולשתות את־שיניהם עמכם׃ |
But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you? | But Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?" | But the Rab-shakeh said, Is it to your master or to you that my master has sent me to say these words? has he not sent me to the men seated on the wall? for they are the people who will be short of food with you when the town is shut in. | |||

כה אמר המלך אל־ישא לכם חזקיהו כי לא־יוכל להציל אתכם׃ |
Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you. | Thus says the king, 'Don't let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you. | This is what the king says: Do not be tricked by Hezekiah, for there is no salvation for you in him. | |||

ואל־יבטח אתכם חזקיהו אל־יהוה לאמר הצל יצילנו יהוה לא תנתן העיר הזאת ביד מלך אשור׃ |
Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. | Don't let Hezekiah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, "Yahweh will surely deliver us. This city won't be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."' | And do not let Hezekiah make you put your faith in the Lord, saying, The Lord will certainly keep us safe, and this town will not be given into the hands of the king of Assyria. | |||

אל־תשמעו אל־חזקיהו כי כה אמר המלך אשור עשו־אתי ברכה וצאו אלי ואכלו איש־גפנו ואיש תאנתו ושתו איש מי־בורו׃ |
Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern; | Don't listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, 'Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern; | Do not give ear to Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says, Make peace with me, and come out to me; and everyone will be free to take the fruit of his vine and of his fig-tree, and the water of his spring; | |||

עד־באי ולקחתי אתכם אל־ארץ כארצכם ארץ דגן ותירוש ארץ לחם וכרמים׃ |
Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. | until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. | Till I come and take you away to a land like yours, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vine-gardens. | |||

פן־יסית אתכם חזקיהו לאמר יהוה יצילנו ההצילו אלהי הגוים איש את־ארצו מיד מלך אשור׃ |
Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? | Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, "Yahweh will deliver us." Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria? | Give no attention to Hezekiah when he says to you, The Lord will keep us safe. Has any one of the gods of the nations kept his land from falling into the hands of the king of Assyria? | |||

איה אלהי חמת וארפד איה אלהי ספרוים וכי־הצילו את־שמרון מידי׃ |
Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? | Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand? | Where are the gods of Hamath and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? where are the gods of Samaria? and have they kept Samaria out of my hand? | |||

מי בכל־אלהי הארצות האלה אשר־הצילו את־ארצם מידי כי־יציל יהוה את־ירושלם מידי׃ |
Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand? | Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Yahweh should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'" | Who among all the gods of these countries have kept their country from falling into my hand, to give cause for the thought that the Lord will keep Jerusalem from falling into my hand? | |||

ויחרישו ולא־ענו אתו דבר כי־מצות המלך היא לאמר לא תענהו׃ |
But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not. | But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king's commandment was, "Don't answer him." | But they kept quiet and gave him no answer: for the king's order was, Give him no answer. | |||

ויבא אליקים בן־חלקיהו אשר־על־הבית ושבנא הסופר ויואח בן־אסף המזכיר אל־חזקיהו קרועי בגדים ויגידו לו את דברי רב־שקה׃ |
Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh. | Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh. | Then Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, who was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothing parted as a sign of grief, and gave him an account of what the Rab-shakeh had said. | |||
