בשנת שתים לדריוש המלך בחדש הששי ביום אחד לחדש היה דבר־יהוה ביד־חגי הנביא אל־זרבבל בן־שאלתיאל פחת יהודה ואל־יהושע בן־יהוצדק הכהן הגדול לאמר׃ |

כה אמר יהוה צבאות לאמר העם הזה אמרו לא עת־בא עת־בית יהוה להבנות׃ |
Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD's house should be built. | "This is what Yahweh of Armies says: These people say, 'The time hasn't yet come, the time for Yahweh's house to be built.'" | These are the words of the Lord of armies: These people say, The time has not come for building the Lord's house. | |||

ויהי דבר־יהוה ביד־חגי הנביא לאמר׃ |

העת לכם אתם לשבת בבתיכם ספונים והבית הזה חרב׃ |
Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste? | "Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies waste? | Is it a time for you to be living in roofed houses while this house is a waste? | |||

ועתה כה אמר יהוה צבאות שימו לבבכם על־דרכיכם׃ |
Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. | Now therefore this is what Yahweh of Armies says: Consider your ways. | For this cause the Lord of armies has said, Give thought to your ways. | |||

זרעתם הרבה והבא מעט אכול ואין־לשבעה שתו ואין־לשכרה לבוש ואין־ לחם לו והמשתכר משתכר אל־צרור נקוב׃ |
Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. | You have sown much, and bring in little. You eat, but you don't have enough. You drink, but you aren't filled with drink. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm, and he who earns wages earns wages to put them into a bag with holes in it." | Much has been planted, but little got in; you take food, but have not enough; you take drink, but are not full; you are clothed, but no one is warm; and he who gets payment for his work, gets it to put it into a bag full of holes. | |||

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. | This is what Yahweh of Armies says: "Consider your ways. | This is what the Lord of armies has said: Give thought to your ways. | |||

עלו ההר והבאתם עץ ובנו הבית וארצה־בו ואכבד אמר יהוה׃ |
Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD. | Go up to the mountain, bring wood, and build the house. I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified," says Yahweh. | Go up to the hills and get wood and put up the house; and I will take pleasure in it and be honoured, says the Lord. | |||

פנה אל־הרבה והנה למעט והבאתם הבית ונפחתי בו יען מה נאם יהוה צבאות יען ביתי אשר־הוא חרב ואתם רצים איש לביתו׃ |
Ye looked for much, and lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house. | "You looked for much, and, behold, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?" says Yahweh of Armies, "Because of my house that lies waste, while each of you is busy with his own house. | You were looking for much, and it came to little; and when you got it into your house, I took it away with a breath. Why? says the Lord of armies. Because of my house which is a waste, while every man takes care of the house which is his. | |||

על־כן עליכם כלאו שמים מטל והארץ כלאה יבולה׃ |
Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit. | Therefore for your sake the heavens withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit. | For this cause the heaven over you is kept from giving dew, and the earth from giving her fruit. | |||

ואקרא חרב על־הארץ ועל־ההרים ועל־הדגן ועל־התירוש ועל־היצהר ועל אשר תוציא האדמה ועל־האדם ועל־הבהמה ועל כל־יגיע כפים׃ |
And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands. | I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on that which the ground brings forth, on men, on livestock, and on all the labor of the hands." | And by my order no rain came on the land or on the mountains or the grain or the wine or the oil or the produce of the earth or on men or cattle or on any work of man's hands. | |||

וישמע זרבבל בן־שלתיאל ויהושע בן־יהוצדק הכהן הגדול וכל שארית העם בקול יהוה אלהיהם ועל־דברי חגי הנביא כאשר שלחו יהוה אלהיהם וייראו העם מפני יהוה׃ |
Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear before the LORD. | Then Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of Yahweh, their God{The Hebrew word rendered "God" is "Elohim."}, and the words of Haggai, the prophet, as Yahweh, their God, had sent him; and the people feared Yahweh. | Then Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all the rest of the people, gave ear to the voice of the Lord their God and to the words of Haggai the prophet, because the Lord their God had sent him, and the people were in fear before the Lord. | |||

ויער יהוה את־רוח זרבבל בן־שלתיאל פחת יהודה ואת־רוח יהושע בן־ יהוצדק הכהן הגדול ואת־רוח כל שארית העם ויבאו ויעשו מלאכה בבית־ יהוה צבאות אלהיהם׃ |
And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, | Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of Yahweh of Armies, their God, | And the spirit of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, ruler of Judah, was moved by the Lord, as was the spirit of Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the rest of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the Lord of armies, their God. | |||
