1.    ויהי  העם  כמתאננים 
רע  באזני  יהוה
וישמע  יהוה  ויחר
אפו  ותבער־בם  אש
יהוה  ותאכל  בקצה
המחנה׃
    And when the people complained, it displeased the LORD: and the LORD heard it; and his anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and consumed them that were in the uttermost parts of the camp.     The people were complaining in the ears of Yahweh. When Yahweh heard it, his anger was kindled; and Yahweh's fire burnt among them, and consumed some of the outskirts of the camp.     Now the people were saying evil against the Lord; and the Lord, hearing it, was angry and sent fire on them, burning the outer parts of the tent-circle.
 
2.    ויצעק  העם  אל־משה 
ויתפלל  משה
אל־יהוה  ותשקע
האש׃
    And the people cried unto Moses; and when Moses prayed unto the LORD, the fire was quenched.     The people cried to Moses; and Moses prayed to Yahweh, and the fire abated.     And the people made an outcry to Moses, and Moses made prayer to the Lord, and the fire was stopped.
 
3.    ויקרא  שם־המקום 
ההוא  תבערה
כי־בערה  בם  אש
יהוה׃
    And he called the name of the place Taberah: because the fire of the LORD burnt among them.     The name of that place was called Taberah{Taberah means "burning"}, because Yahweh's fire burnt among them.     So that place was named Taberah, because of the fire of the Lord which had been burning among them.
 
4.    והאספסף  אשר  בקרבו 
התאוו  תאוה  וישבו
ויבכו  גם  בני
ישראל  ויאמרו  מי
יאכלנו  בשר׃
    And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?     The mixed multitude that was among them lusted exceedingly: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, "Who will give us flesh to eat?     And the mixed band of people who went with them were overcome by desire: and the children of Israel, weeping again, said, Who will give us flesh for our food?
 
5.    זכרנו  את־הדגה 
אשר־נאכל  במצרים
חנם  את  הקשאים  ואת
האבטחים  ואת־
החציר  ואת־הבצלים
ואת־השומים׃
    We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick:     We remember the fish, which we ate in Egypt for nothing; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic;     Sweet is the memory of the fish we had in Egypt for nothing, and the fruit and green plants of every sort, sharp and pleasing to the taste:
 
6.    ועתה  נפשנו  יבשה 
אין  כל  בלתי
אל־המן  עינינו׃
    But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.     but now we have lost our appetite. There is nothing at all except this manna to look at."     But now our soul is wasted away; there is nothing at all: we have nothing but this manna before our eyes.
 
7.    והמן  כזרע־גד  הוא 
ועינו  כעין  הבדלח׃
    And the manna was as coriander seed, and the colour thereof as the colour of bdellium.     The manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like the appearance of bdellium.     Now the manna was like a seed of grain, like small clear drops.
 
8.    שטו  העם  ולקטו 
וטחנו  ברחים  או
דכו  במדכה  ובשלו
בפרור  ועשו  אתו
עגות  והיה  טעמו
כטעם  לשד  השמן׃
    And the people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in a mortar, and baked it in pans, and made cakes of it: and the taste of it was as the taste of fresh oil.     The people went around, gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and boiled it in pots, and made cakes of it. Its taste was like the taste of fresh oil.     The people went about taking it up from the earth, crushing it between stones or hammering it to powder, and boiling it in pots, and they made cakes of it: its taste was like the taste of cakes cooked with oil.
 
9.    וברדת  הטל 
על־המחנה  לילה  ירד
המן  עליו׃
    And when the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon it.     When the dew fell on the camp in the night, the manna fell on it.     When the dew came down on the tents at night, the manna came down with it.
 
10.    וישמע  משה  את־העם 
בכה  למשפחתיו  איש
לפתח  אהלו  ויחר־אף
יהוה  מאד  ובעיני
משה  רע׃
    Then Moses heard the people weep throughout their families, every man in the door of his tent: and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; Moses also was displeased.     Moses heard the people weeping throughout their families, every man at the door of his tent; and the anger of Yahweh was kindled greatly; and Moses was displeased.     And at the sound of the people weeping, every man at his tent-door, the wrath of the Lord was great, and Moses was very angry.
 
11.    ויאמר  משה  אל־יהוה 
למה  הרעת  לעבדך
ולמה  לא־מצתי  חן
בעיניך  לשום
את־משא  כל־העם  הזה
עלי׃
    And Moses said unto the LORD, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favour in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?     Moses said to Yahweh, "Why have you treated with your servant so badly? Why haven't I found favor in your sight, that you lay the burden of all this people on me?     And Moses said to the Lord, Why have you done me this evil? and why have I not grace in your eyes, that you have put on me the care of all this people?
 
12.    האנכי  הריתי  את 
כל־העם  הזה
אם־אנכי  ילדתיהו
כי־תאמר  אלי  שאהו
בחיקך  כאשר  ישא
האמן  את־הינק  על
האדמה  אשר  נשבעת
לאבתיו׃
    Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father beareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swarest unto their fathers?     Have I conceived all this people? Have I brought them forth, that you should tell me, 'Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing infant, to the land which you swore to their fathers?'     Am I the father of all this people? have I given them birth, that you say to me, Take them in your arms, like a child at the breast, to the land which you gave by an oath to their fathers?
 
13.    מאין  לי  בשר  לתת 
לכל־העם  הזה
כי־יבכו  עלי  לאמר
תנה־לנו  בשר
ונאכלה׃
    Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat.     Where could I get meat to give to all this people? For they weep to me, saying, 'Give us meat, that we may eat.'     Where am I to get flesh to give to all this people? For they are weeping to me and saying, Give us flesh for our food.
 
14.    לא־אוכל  אנכי  לבדי 
לשאת  את־כל־העם
הזה  כי  כבד  ממני׃
    I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.     I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.     I am not able by myself to take the weight of all this people, for it is more than my strength.
 
15.    ואם־ככה  את־עשה  לי 
הרגני  נא  הרג
אם־מצאתי  חן
בעיניך  ואל־אראה
ברעתי׃
    And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray thee, out of hand, if I have found favour in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.     If you treat me this way, please kill me right now, if I have found favor in your sight; and don't let me see my wretchedness."     If this is to be my fate, put me to death now in answer to my prayer, if I have grace in your eyes; and let me not see my shame.
 
16.    ויאמר  יהוה  אל־משה 
אספה־לי  שבעים  איש
מזקני  ישראל  אשר
ידעת  כי־  הם  זקני
העם  ושטריו  ולקחת
אתם  אל־אהל  מועד
והתיצבו  שם  עמך׃
    And the LORD said unto Moses, Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou knowest to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tabernacle of the congregation, that they may stand there with thee.     Yahweh said to Moses, "Gather to me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, that they may stand there with you.     And the Lord said to Moses, Send for seventy of the responsible men of Israel, who are in your opinion men of weight and authority over the people; make them come to the Tent of meeting and be there with you.
 
17.    וירדתי  ודברתי  עמך 
שם  ואצלתי  מן־הרוח
אשר  עליך  ושמתי
עליהם  ונשאו  אתך
במשא  העם  ולא־תשא
אתה  לבדך׃
    And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.     I will come down and talk with you there. I will take of the Spirit which is on you, and will put it on them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with you, that you not bear it yourself alone.     And I will come down and have talk with you there: and I will take some of the spirit which is on you and put it on them, and they will take part of the weight of the people off you, so that you do not have to take it by yourself.
 
18.    ואל־העם  תאמר 
התקדשו  למחר
ואכלתם  בשר  כי
בכיתם  באזני  יהוה
לאמר  מי  יאכלנו
בשר  כי־טוב  לנו
במצרים  ונתן  יהוה
לכם  בשר  ואכלתם׃
    And say thou unto the people, Sanctify yourselves against to morrow, and ye shall eat flesh: for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was well with us in Egypt: therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat.     "Say to the people, 'Sanctify yourselves against tomorrow, and you will eat flesh; for you have wept in the ears of Yahweh, saying, "Who will give us flesh to eat? For it was well with us in Egypt." Therefore Yahweh will give you flesh, and you will eat.     And say to the people, Make yourselves clean before tomorrow and you will have flesh for your food: for in the ears of the Lord you have been weeping and saying, Who will give us flesh for food? for we were well off in Egypt: and so the Lord will give you flesh, and it will be your food;
 
19.    לא  יום  אחד  תאכלון 
ולא  יומים  ולא
חמשה  ימים  ולא
עשרה  ימים  ולא
עשרים  יום׃
    Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days;     You will not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days,     Not for one day only, or even for five or ten or twenty days;
 
20.    עד  חדש  ימים  עד 
אשר־יצא  מאפכם
והיה  לכם  לזרא  יען
כי־מאסתם  את־  יהוה
אשר  בקרבכם  ותבכו
לפניו  לאמר  למה  זה
יצאנו  ממצרים׃
    But even a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you: because that ye have despised the LORD which is among you, and have wept before him, saying, Why came we forth out of Egypt?     but a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it is loathsome to you; because that you have rejected Yahweh who is among you, and have wept before him, saying, "Why did we come out of Egypt?"'"     But every day for a month, till you are tired of it, turning from it in disgust: because you have gone against the Lord who is with you, and have been weeping before him saying, Why did we come out of Egypt?
 
21.    ויאמר  משה  שש־מאות 
אלף  רגלי  העם  אשר
אנכי  בקרבו  ואתה
אמרת  בשר  אתן  להם
ואכלו  חדש  ימים׃
    And Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand footmen; and thou hast said, I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.     Moses said, "The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand men on foot; and you have said, 'I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month.'     Then Moses said, The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand men on foot; and you have said, I will give them flesh to be their food for a month.
 
22.    הצאן  ובקר  ישחט 
להם  ומצא  להם  אם
את־כל־דגי  הים
יאסף  להם  ומצא
להם׃
    Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them, to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them?     Shall flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to be sufficient for them? Shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to be sufficient for them?"     Are flocks and herds to be put to death for them? or are all the fish in the sea to be got together so that they may be full?
 
23.    ויאמר  יהוה  אל־משה 
היד  יהוה  תקצר  עתה
תראה  היקרך  דברי
אם־לא׃
    And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD's hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether my word shall come to pass unto thee or not.     Yahweh said to Moses, "Has Yahweh's hand grown short? Now you will see whether my word will happen to you or not."     And the Lord said to Moses, Has the Lord's hand become short? Now you will see if my word comes true for you or not.
 
24.    ויצא  משה  וידבר 
אל־העם  את  דברי
יהוה  ויאסף  שבעים
איש  מזקני  העם
ויעמד  אתם  סביבת
האהל׃
    And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.     Moses went out, and told the people the words of Yahweh; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them around the Tent.     And Moses went out and gave the people the words of the Lord: and he took seventy of the responsible men of the people, placing them round the Tent.
 
25.    וירד  יהוה  בענן 
וידבר  אליו  ויאצל
מן־הרוח  אשר  עליו
ויתן  על־  שבעים
איש  הזקנים  ויהי
כנוח  עליהם  הרוח
ויתנבאו  ולא  יספו׃
    And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease.     Yahweh came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was on him, and put it on the seventy elders: and it happened that when the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied, but they did so no more.     Then the Lord came down in the cloud and had talk with him, and put on the seventy men some of the spirit which was on him: now when the spirit came to rest on them, they were like prophets, but only at that time.
 
26.    וישארו  שני־אנשים 
במחנה  שם  האחד
אלדד  ושם  השני
מידד  ותנח  עלהם
הרוח  והמה  בכתבים
ולא  יצאו  האהלה
ויתנבאו  במחנה׃
    But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp.     But two men remained in the camp. The name of one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the Spirit rested on them; and they were of those who were written, but had not gone out to the Tent; and they prophesied in the camp.     But two men were still in the tent-circle one of them named Eldad and the other Medad: and the spirit came to rest on them; they were among those who had been sent for, but they had not gone out to the Tent: and the prophet's power came on them in the tent-circle.
 
27.    וירץ  הנער  ויגד 
למשה  ויאמר  אלדד
ומידד  מתנבאים
במחנה׃
    And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said, Eldad and Medad do prophesy in the camp.     A young man ran, and told Moses, and said, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp!"     And a young man went running to Moses and said, Eldad and Medad are acting as prophets in the tent-circle.
 
28.    ויען  יהושע  בן־נון 
משרת  משה  מבחריו
ויאמר  אדני  משה
כלאם׃
    And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, My lord Moses, forbid them.     Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his chosen men, answered, "My lord Moses, forbid them!"     Then Joshua, the son of Nun, who had been Moses' servant from the time when he was a child, said, My lord Moses, let them be stopped.
 
29.    ויאמר  לו  משה 
המקנא  אתה  לי  ומי
יתן  כל־עם  יהוה
נביאים  כי־יתן
יהוה  את־רוחו
עליהם׃
    And Moses said unto him, Enviest thou for my sake? would God that all the LORD's people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!     Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all Yahweh's people were prophets, that Yahweh would put his Spirit on them!"     And Moses said to him, Are you moved by envy on my account? If only all the Lord's people were prophets, and the Lord might put his spirit on them!
 
30.    ויאסף  משה 
אל־המחנה  הוא
וזקני  ישראל׃
    And Moses gat him into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.     Moses went into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.     Then Moses, with the responsible men of Israel, went back to the tent-circle.
 
31.    ורוח  נסע  מאת  יהוה 
ויגז  שלוים  מן־הים
ויטש  על־המחנה
כדרך  יום  כה  וכדרך
יום  כה  סביבות
המחנה  וכאמתים
על־פני  הארץ׃
    And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, as it were a day's journey on this side, and as it were a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth.     A wind from Yahweh went out and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day's journey on this side, and a day's journey on the other side, around the camp, and about two cubits above the surface of the earth.     Then the Lord sent a wind, driving little birds from the sea, so that they came down on the tents, and all round the tent-circle, about a day's journey on this side and on that, in masses about two cubits high over the face of the earth.
 
32.    ויקם  העם  כל־היום 
ההוא  וכל־הלילה
וכל  יום  המחרת
ויאספו  את־השלו
הממעיט  אסף  עשרה
חמרים  וישטחו  להם
שטוח  סביבות
המחנה׃
    And the people stood up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quails: he that gathered least gathered ten homers: and they spread them all abroad for themselves round about the camp.     The people rose up all that day, and all the night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails. He who gathered least gathered ten homers;{1 homer is about 220 litres or 6 bushels} and they spread them all abroad for themselves around the camp.     And all that day and all night and the day after, the people were taking up the birds; the smallest amount which anyone got was ten homers: and they put them out all round the tents.
 
33.    הבשר  עודנו  בין 
שניהם  טרם  יכרת
ואף  יהוה  חרה  בעם
ויך  יהוה  בעם  מכה
רבה  מאד׃
    And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.     While the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of Yahweh was kindled against the people, and Yahweh struck the people with a very great plague.     But while the meat was still between their teeth, before it was tasted, the wrath of the Lord was moved against the people and he sent a great outburst of disease on them.
 
34.    ויקרא  את־שם־המקום 
ההוא  קברות  התאוה
כי־שם  קברו  את־העם
המתאוים׃
    And he called the name of that place Kibrothhattaavah: because there they buried the people that lusted.     The name of that place was called Kibroth Hattaavah,{Kibroth Hattaavah means "graves of lust."} because there they buried the people who lusted.     So that place was named Kibroth-hattaavah; because there they put in the earth the bodies of the people who had given way to their desires.
 
35.    מקברות  התאוה  נסעו 
העם  חצרות  ויהיו
בחצרות׃
    And the people journeyed from Kibrothhattaavah unto Hazeroth; and abode at Hazeroth.     From Kibroth Hattaavah the people traveled to Hazeroth; and they stayed at Hazeroth.     From Kibroth-hattaavah the people went on to Hazeroth; and there they put up their tents.
