וישב ישראל בשטים ויחל העם לזנות אל־בנות מואב׃ |
And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. | Israel abode in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Moab: | Now when Israel was living in Shittim the people became false to the Lord, doing evil with the daughters of Moab: | |||

ותקראן לעם לזבחי אלהיהן ויאכל העם וישתחוו לאלהיהן׃ |
And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. | for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate, and bowed down to their gods. | For they sent for the people to be present at the offerings made to their gods; and the people took part in their feasts and gave honour to their gods. | |||

ויצמד ישראל לבעל פעור ויחר־אף יהוה בישראל׃ |
And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. | Israel joined himself to Baal Peor: and the anger of Yahweh was kindled against Israel. | So Israel had relations with the women of Moab in honour of the Baal of Peor: and the Lord was moved to wrath against Israel. | |||

ויאמר יהוה אל־משה קח את־כל־ראשי העם והוקע אותם ליהוה נגד השמש וישב חרון אף־יהוה מישראל׃ |
And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel. | Yahweh said to Moses, "Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to Yahweh before the sun, that the fierce anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel." | Then the Lord said to Moses, Take all the chiefs of the people, hanging them up in the sun before the Lord, so that the wrath of the Lord may be turned from Israel. | |||

ויאמר משה אל־שפטי ישראל הרגו איש אנשיו הנצמדים לבעל פעור׃ |
And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor. | Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor." | So Moses said to the judges of Israel, Let everyone put to death those of his men who have had relations with the women of Moab in honour of the Baal of Peor. | |||

והנה איש מבני ישראל בא ויקרב אל־אחיו את־המדינית לעיני משה ולעיני כל־עדת בני־ישראל והמה בכים פתח אהל מועד׃ |
And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. | Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting. | Then one of the children of Israel came to his brothers, taking with him a woman of Midian, before the eyes of Moses and all the meeting of the people, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of meeting. | |||

וירא פינחס בן־אלעזר בן־אהרן הכהן ויקם מתוך העדה ויקח רמח בידו׃ |
And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; | When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand; | And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, seeing it, got up from among the people and took a spear in his hand, | |||

ויבא אחר איש־ישראל אל־הקבה וידקר את־שניהם את איש ישראל ואת־ האשה אל־קבתה ותעצר המגפה מעל בני ישראל׃ |
And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. | and he went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. ויהיו המתים במגפה ארבעה ועשרים אלף׃ |

פינחס בן־אלעזר בן־אהרן הכהן השיב את־חמתי מעל בני־ישראל בקנאו את־קנאתי בתוכם ולא־כליתי את־בני־ישראל בקנאתי׃ |
Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. | "Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn't consume the children of Israel in my jealousy. | Through Phinehas, and because of his passion for my honour, my wrath has been turned away from the children of Israel, so that I have not sent destruction on them all in my wrath. | |||

לכן אמר הנני נתן לו את־בריתי שלום׃ |
Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace: | Therefore say, 'Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace: | So say to them that I will make with him an agreement of peace: | |||

והיתה לו ולזרעו אחריו ברית כהנת עולם תחת אשר קנא לאלהיו ויכפר על־בני ישראל׃ |
And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel. | and it shall be to him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.'" | And by this agreement, he and his sons after him have the right to be priests for ever; because, by his care for the honour of his God, he took away the sin of the children of Israel. | |||

Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites. | Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers' house among the Simeonites. | Now the man of Israel who was put to death with the woman of Midian was Zimri, the son of Salu, a chief of one of the families of the Simeonites. | |||

ושם האשה המכה המדינית כזבי בת־צור ראש אמות בית־אב במדין הוא׃ |
And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian. | The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers' house in Midian. | And the woman of Midian who was put to death was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was the head of a family in Midian. | |||

וידבר יהוה אל־משה לאמר׃ |
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, | Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, | Then the Lord said to Moses, | |||

צרור את־המדינים והכיתם אותם׃ |
Vex the Midianites, and smite them: | "Harass the Midianites, and strike them; | Take up arms against the Midianites and overcome them; | |||

כי צררים הם לכם בנכליהם אשר־נכלו לכם על־דבר־פעור ועל־דבר כזבי בת־נשיא מדין אחתם המכה ביום־המגפה על־דבר־פעור׃ |
For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake. | for they harassed you with their wiles, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor." | For they are a danger to you with their false ways, causing sin to come on you in the question of Peor, and because of Cozbi, their sister, the daughter of the chief of Midian, who was put to death at the time of the disease which came on you because of Peor. | |||
