1.    ויהי  בבא  דוד 
ואנשיו  צקלג  ביום
השלישי  ועמלקי
פשטו  אל־נגב  ואל־
צקלג  ויכו  את־צקלג
וישרפו  אתה  באש׃
    And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;     It happened, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had made a raid on the South, and on Ziklag, and had struck Ziklag, and burned it with fire,     Now when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had made an attack on the South and on Ziklag, and had overcome Ziklag and put it on fire;
 
2.    וישבו  את־הנשים 
אשר־בה  מקטן
ועד־גדול  לא  המיתו
איש  וינהגו  וילכו
לדרכם׃
    And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.     and had taken captive the women and all who were therein, both small and great. They didn't kill any, but carried them off, and went their way.     And had made the women and all who were there, small and great, prisoners: they had not put any of them to death, but had taken them all away.
 
3.    ויבא  דוד  ואנשיו 
אל־העיר  והנה
שרופה  באש  ונשיהם
ובניהם  ובנתיהם
נשבו׃
    So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.     When David and his men came to the city, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captive.     And when David and his men came to the town, they saw that it had been burned down, and their wives and their sons and daughters had been made prisoners.
 
4.    וישא  דוד  והעם 
אשר־אתו  את־קולם
ויבכו  עד  אשר
אין־בהם  כח  לבכות׃

5.    ושתי  נשי־דוד  נשבו

6.    ותצר  לדוד  מאד 
כי־אמרו  העם  לסקלו
כי־מרה  נפש  כל־העם
איש  על־בנו
ועל־בנתיו  ויתחזק
דוד  ביהוה  אלהיו׃
    And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.     David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God.     And David was greatly troubled; for the people were talking of stoning him, because their hearts were bitter, every man sorrowing for his sons and his daughters: but David made himself strong in the Lord his God.
 
7.    ויאמר  דוד 
אל־אביתר  הכהן
בן־אחימלך
הגישה־נא  לי  האפד
ויגש  אביתר
את־האפד  אל־דוד׃
    And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David.     David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, "Please bring me here the ephod." Abiathar brought the ephod to David.     And David said to Abiathar the priest, the son of Ahimelech, Come here to me with the ephod. And Abiathar took the ephod to David.
 
8.    וישאל  דוד  ביהוה 
לאמר  ארדף  אחרי
הגדוד־הזה  האשגנו
ויאמר  לו  רדף
כי־השג  תשיג  והצל
תציל׃
    And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.     David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "If I pursue after this troop, shall I overtake them?" He answered him, "Pursue; for you shall surely overtake them, and shall without fail recover all."     Then David, questioning the Lord, said, Am I to go after this band? will I be able to overtake them? And in answer he said, Go after them, for you will certainly overtake them, and get back everything.
 
9.    וילך  דוד  הוא 
ושש־מאות  איש  אשר
אתו  ויבאו  עד־נחל
הבשור  והנותרים
עמדו׃

10.    וירדף  דוד  הוא 
וארבע־מאות  איש
ויעמדו  מאתים  איש

את־נחל  הבשור׃
    But David pursued, he and four hundred men: for two hundred abode behind, which were so faint that they could not go over the brook Besor.     But David pursued, he and four hundred men; for two hundred stayed behind, who were so faint that they couldn't go over the brook Besor.     And David, with four hundred men, went on: but two hundred of them were overcome with weariness, and not able to go across the stream.
 
11.    וימצאו  איש־מצרי 
בשדה  ויקחו  אתו
אל־דוד  ויתנו־לו
לחם  ויאכל  וישקהו
מים׃

12.    ויתנו־לו  פלח  דבלה 
ושני  צמקים  ויאכל
ותשב  רוחו  אליו  כי
לא־אכל  לחם
ולא־שתה  מים  שלשה
ימים  ושלשה  לילות׃

13.    ויאמר  לו  דוד 
למי־אתה  ואי  מזה
אתה  ויאמר  נער
מצרי  אנכי  עבד
לאיש  עמלקי
ויעזבני  אדני  כי
חליתי  היום  שלשה׃
    And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days agone I fell sick.     David asked him, "To whom do you belong? Where are you from?" He said, "I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days ago I fell sick.     And David said to him, Whose man are you and where do you come from? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master went on without me because three days back I became ill.
 
14.    אנחנו  פשטנו  נגב 
הכרתי  ועל־אשר
ליהודה  ועל־נגב
כלב  ואת־צקלג
שרפנו  באש׃
    We made an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites, and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah, and upon the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.     We made a raid on the South of the Cherethites, and on that which belongs to Judah, and on the South of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire."     We made an attack on the south part of the country of the Cherethites, and on the land which is Judah's, and on the south of Caleb; and we put Ziklag on fire.
 
15.    ויאמר  אליו  דוד 
התורדני  אל־הגדוד
הזה  ויאמר  השבעה
לי  באלהים  אם־
תמיתני  ואם־תסגרני
ביד־אדני  ואורדך
אל־הגדוד  הזה׃
    And David said to him, Canst thou bring me down to this company? And he said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this company.     David said to him, "Will you bring me down to this troop?" He said, "Swear to me by God that you will neither kill me, nor deliver me up into the hands of my master, and I will bring you down to this troop."     And David said to him, Will you take me down to this band? And he said, If you give me your oath that you will not put me to death or give me up to my master, I will take you to them.
 
16.    וירדהו  והנה  נטשים 
על־פני  כל־הארץ
אכלים  ושתים
וחגגים  בכל  השלל
הגדול  אשר  לקחו
מארץ  פלשתים  ומארץ
יהודה׃
    And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.     When he had brought him down, behold, they were spread around over all the ground, eating, drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.     And when he had taken him down, they saw them all, seated about on all sides, feasting and drinking among all the mass of goods which they had taken from the land of the Philistines and the land of Judah.
 
17.    ויכם  דוד  מהנשף 
ועד־הערב  למחרתם
ולא־נמלט  מהם  איש
כי  אם־ארבע  מאות
איש־נער  אשר־רכבו
על־הגמלים  וינסו׃
    And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which rode upon camels, and fled.     David struck them from the twilight even to the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped from there, except four hundred young men, who rode on camels and fled.     And David went on fighting them from evening till the evening of the day after; and not one of them got away but only four hundred young men who went in flight on camels.
 
18.    ויצל  דוד  את 
כל־אשר  לקחו  עמלק
ואת־שתי  נשיו  הציל
דוד׃
    And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away: and David rescued his two wives.     David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken; and David rescued his two wives.     And David got back everything the Amalekites had taken; and he got back his two wives.
 
19.    ולא  נעדר־להם 
מן־הקטן  ועד־הגדול
ועד־בנים  ובנות
ומשלל  ועד  כל־  אשר
לקחו  להם  הכל  השיב
דוד׃
    And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.     There was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor anything that they had taken to them. David brought back all.     There was no loss of anything, small or great, sons or daughters or goods or anything which they had taken away: David got it all back.
 
20.    ויקח  דוד 
את־כל־הצאן  והבקר
נהגו  לפני  המקנה
ההוא  ויאמרו  זה
שלל  דוד׃
    And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drave before those other cattle, and said, This is David's spoil.     David took all the flocks and the herds, [which] they drove before those [other] livestock, and said, "This is David's spoil."     And they took all the flocks and herds, and driving them in front of him, said, These are David's.
 
21.    ויבא  דוד  אל־מאתים 
האנשים  אשר־פגרו
מלכת  אחרי  דוד
וישיבם  בנחל  הבשור
ויצאו  לקראת  דוד
ולקראת  העם
אשר־אתו  ויגש  דוד
את־העם  וישאל  להם
לשלום׃
    And David came to the two hundred men, which were so faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he saluted them.     David came to the two hundred men, who were so faint that they could not follow David, whom also they had made to stay at the brook Besor; and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people who were with him. When David came near to the people, he greeted them.     And David came to the two hundred men, who because of weariness had not gone with him, but were waiting at the stream Besor: and they went out, meeting David and the people who were with him; and when they came near them, they said, How are you?
 
22.    ויען  כל־איש־רע 
ובליעל  מהאנשים
אשר  הלכו  עם־דוד
ויאמרו  יען  אשר
לא־הלכו  עמי
לא־נתן  להם  מהשלל
אשר  הצלנו
כי־אם־איש  את־אשתו
ואת־  בניו  וינהגו
וילכו׃
    Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.     Then all the wicked men and base fellows, of those who went with David, answered and said, "Because they didn't go with us, we will not give them anything of the spoil that we have recovered, except to every man his wife and his children, that he may lead them away, and depart."     Then the bad and good-for-nothing men among those who went with David said, Because they did not go with us, we will give them nothing of the goods which we have got back, but only to every man his wife and children, so that he may take them and go.
 
23.    ויאמר  דוד  לא־תעשו 
כן  אחי  את  אשר־נתן
יהוה  לנו  וישמר
אתנו  ויתן
את־הגדוד  הבא
עלינו  בידנו׃
    Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.     Then said David, "You shall not do so, my brothers, with that which Yahweh has given to us, who has preserved us, and delivered the troop that came against us into our hand.     Then David said, You are not to do this, my brothers, after what the Lord has given us, who has kept us safe and given up the band which came against us into our hands.
 
24.    ומי  ישמע  לכם  לדבר 
הזה  כי  כחלק  הירד
במלחמה  וכחלק  הישב
על־  הכלים  יחדו
יחלקו׃
    For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.     Who will listen to you in this matter? For as his share is who goes down to the battle, so shall his share be who tarries by the baggage: they shall share alike."     Who is going to give any attention to you in this question? for an equal part will be given to him who went to the fight and to him who was waiting by the goods: they are all to have the same.
 
25.    ויהי  מהיום  ההוא 
ומעלה  וישמה  לחק
ולמשפט  לישראל  עד
היום  הזה׃
    And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel unto this day.     It was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day.     And so he made it a rule and an order for Israel from that day till now.
 
26.    ויבא  דוד  אל־צקלג 
וישלח  מהשלל  לזקני
יהודה  לרעהו  לאמר
הנה  לכם  ברכה  משלל
איבי  יהוה׃
    And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil unto the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, Behold a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of the LORD;     When David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil to the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, "Behold, a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of Yahweh."     And when David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the goods to the responsible men of Judah, and to his friends, saying, Here is an offering for you from the goods of those who were fighting against the Lord;
 
27.    לאשר  בבית־אל 
ולאשר  ברמות־נגב
ולאשר  ביתר׃
    To them which were in Bethel, and to them which were in south Ramoth, and to them which were in Jattir,     He sent it to those who were in Bethel, and to those who were in Ramoth of the South, and to those who were in Jattir,     He sent to those who were in Beth-el, and in Ramah of the South, and in Jattir;
 
28.    ולאשר  בערער  ולאשר 
בשפמות  ולאשר
באשתמע׃
    And to them which were in Aroer, and to them which were in Siphmoth, and to them which were in Eshtemoa,     and to those who were in Aroer, and to those who were in Siphmoth, and to those who were in Eshtemoa,     And to those in Arara and Eshtemoa
 
29.    ולאשר  ברכל  ולאשר 
בערי  הירחמאלי
ולאשר  בערי  הקיני׃
    And to them which were in Rachal, and to them which were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to them which were in the cities of the Kenites,     and to those who were in Racal, and to those who were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to those who were in the cities of the Kenites,     and Carmel and in the towns of the Jerahmeelites, and in the towns of the Kenites;
 
30.    ולאשר  בחרמה  ולאשר 
בבור־עשן  ולאשר
בעתך׃
    And to them which were in Hormah, and to them which were in Chorashan, and to them which were in Athach,     and to those who were in Hormah, and to those who were in Borashan, and to those who were in Athach,     And to those who were in Hormah and in Bor-ashan and in Athach;
 
31.    ולאשר  בחברון 
ולכל־המקמות
אשר־התהלך־שם  דוד
הוא  ואנשיו׃
    And to them which were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were wont to haunt.     and to those who were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men used to stay.     And in Hebron, and to all the places where David and his men had been living.
