1.    The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now it happened in the month Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,     The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass in the month Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace,     דברי  נחמיה 
בן־חכליה  ויהי
בחדש־כסלו  שנת
עשרים  ואני  הייתי
בשושן  הבירה׃
    DBUrY NChMYH BN-ChKLYH VYHY BChDSh-KSLV ShNTh 'yShUrYM V'aNY HYYThY BShVShN HBYUrH.     Words of Nehemiah son of Hachaliah. And it cometh to pass, in the month of Chisleu, the twentieth year, and I have been in Shushan the palace,     verba Neemiae filii Echliae et factum est in mense casleu anno vicesimo et ego eram in Susis castro
 
2.    that Hanani, one of my brothers, came, he and certain men out of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.     That Hanani, one of my brethren, came, he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.     ויבא  חנני  אחד 
מאחי  הוא  ואנשים
מיהודה  ואשאלם
על־היהודים  הפליטה
אשר־נשארו  מן־השבי
ועל־ירושלם׃
    VYB'a ChNNY 'aChD M'aChY HV'a V'aNShYM MYHVDH V'aSh'aLM 'yL-HYHVDYM HPhLYTH 'aShUr-NSh'aUrV MN-HShBY V'yL-YUrVShLM.     and come in doth Hanani, one of my brethren, he and men of Judah, and I ask them concerning the Jews, the escaped part that have been left of the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem;     et venit Anani unus de fratribus meis ipse et viri ex Iuda et interrogavi eos de Iudaeis qui remanserant et supererant de captivitate et de Hierusalem
 
3.    They said to me, "The remnant who are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire."     And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.     ויאמרו  לי  הנשארים 
אשר־נשארו  מן־השבי
שם  במדינה  ברעה
גדלה  ובחרפה  וחומת
ירושלם  מפרצת
ושעריה  נצתו  באש׃
    VY'aMUrV LY HNSh'aUrYM 'aShUr-NSh'aUrV MN-HShBY ShM BMDYNH BUr'yH GDLH VBChUrPhH VChVMTh YUrVShLM MPhUrTShTh VSh'yUrYH NTShThV B'aSh.     and they say to me, `Those left, who have been left of the captivity there in the province, are in great evil, and in reproach, and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burnt with fire.`     et dixerunt mihi qui remanserunt et derelicti sunt de captivitate ibi in provincia in adflictione magna sunt et in obprobrio et murus Hierusalem dissipatus est et portae eius conbustae sunt igni
 
4.    It happened, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days; and I fasted and prayed before the God{The Hebrew word rendered "God" is "Elohim."} of heaven,     And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,     ויהי  כשמעי 
את־הדברים  האלה
ישבתי  ואבכה
ואתאבלה  ימים  ואהי
צם  ומתפלל  לפני
אלהי  השמים׃
    VYHY KShM'yY 'aTh-HDBUrYM H'aLH YShBThY V'aBKH V'aTh'aBLH YMYM V'aHY TShM VMThPhLL LPhNY 'aLHY HShMYM.     And it cometh to pass, at my hearing these words, I have sat down, and I weep and mourn for days, and I am fasting and praying before the God of the heavens.     cumque audissem verba huiuscemodi sedi et flevi et luxi diebus et ieiunabam et orabam ante faciem Dei caeli
 
5.    and said, "I beg you, Yahweh,{"Yahweh" is God's proper Name, sometimes rendered "LORD" (all caps) in other translations.} the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with those who love him and keep his commandments:     And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments:     ואמר  אנא  יהוה 
אלהי  השמים  האל
הגדול  והנורא  שמר
הברית  וחסד  לאהביו
ולשמרי  מצותיו׃
    V'aMUr 'aN'a YHVH 'aLHY HShMYM H'aL HGDVL VHNVUr'a ShMUr HBUrYTh VChSD L'aHBYV VLShMUrY MTShVThYV.     And I say, `I beseech thee, O Jehovah, God of the heavens, God, the great and the fearful, keeping the covenant and kindness for those loving Him, and for those keeping His commands,     et dixi quaeso Domine Deus caeli fortis magne atque terribilis qui custodis pactum et misericordiam cum his qui te diligunt et custodiunt mandata tua
 
6.    Let your ear now be attentive, and your eyes open, that you may listen to the prayer of your servant, which I pray before you at this time, day and night, for the children of Israel your servants while I confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Yes, I and my father's house have sinned.     Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned.     תהי  נא  אזנך־קשבת 
ועיניך  פתוחות
לשמע  אל־תפלת  עבדך
אשר  אנכי  מתפלל
לפניך  היום  יומם
ולילה  על־בני
ישראל  עבדיך
ומתודה  על־חטאות
בני־ישראל  אשר
חטאנו  לך  ואני
ובית־אבי  חטאנו׃
    ThHY N'a 'aZNK-QShBTh V'yYNYK PhThVChVTh LShM'y 'aL-ThPhLTh 'yBDK 'aShUr 'aNKY MThPhLL LPhNYK HYVM YVMM VLYLH 'yL-BNY YShUr'aL 'yBDYK VMThVDH 'yL-ChT'aVTh BNY-YShUr'aL 'aShUr ChT'aNV LK V'aNY VBYTh-'aBY ChT'aNV.     let Thine ear be, I pray Thee, attentive, and Thine eyes open, to hearken unto the prayer of Thy servant, that I am praying before Thee to-day, by day and by night, concerning the sons of Israel Thy servants, and confessing concerning the sins of the sons of Israel, that we have sinned against Thee; yea, I and the house of my father have sinned;     fiat auris tua auscultans et oculi tui aperti ut audias orationem servi tui quam ego oro coram te hodie nocte et die pro filiis Israhel servis tuis et confiteor pro peccatis filiorum Israhel quibus peccaverunt tibi et ego et domus patris mei peccavimus
 
7.    We have dealt very corruptly against you, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the ordinances, which you commanded your servant Moses.     We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.     חבל  חבלנו  לך 
ולא־שמרנו
את־המצות
ואת־החקים
ואת־המשפטים  אשר
צוית  את־משה  עבדך׃
    ChBL ChBLNV LK VL'a-ShMUrNV 'aTh-HMTShVTh V'aTh-HChQYM V'aTh-HMShPhTYM 'aShUr TShVYTh 'aTh-MShH 'yBDK.     we have acted very corruptly against Thee, and have not kept the commands, and the statutes, and the judgments, that Thou didst command Moses Thy servant.     vanitate seducti sumus et non custodivimus mandatum et caerimonias et iudicia quae praecepisti Mosi servo tuo
 
8.    "Remember, I beg you, the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, 'If you trespass, I will scatter you abroad among the peoples;     Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:     זכר־נא  את־הדבר 
אשר  צוית  את־משה
עבדך  לאמר  אתם
תמעלו  אני  אפיץ
אתכם  בעמים׃
    ZKUr-N'a 'aTh-HDBUr 'aShUr TShVYTh 'aTh-MShH 'yBDK L'aMUr 'aThM ThM'yLV 'aNY 'aPhYTSh 'aThKM B'yMYM.     `Remember, I pray Thee, the word that Thou didst command Moses Thy servant, saying, Ye -- ye trespass -- I scatter you among peoples;     memento verbi quod mandasti Mosi famulo tuo dicens cum transgressi fueritis ego dispergam vos in populos
 
9.    but if you return to me, and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts were in the uttermost part of the heavens, yet will I gather them from there, and will bring them to the place that I have chosen, to cause my name to dwell there.'     But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.     ושבתם  אלי  ושמרתם 
מצותי  ועשיתם  אתם
אם־יהיה  נדחכם
בקצה  השמים  משם
אקבצם  והבואתים
אל־המקום  אשר
בחרתי  לשכן  את־שמי
שם׃
    VShBThM 'aLY VShMUrThM MTShVThY V'yShYThM 'aThM 'aM-YHYH NDChKM BQTShH HShMYM MShM 'aQBTShM VHBV'aThYM 'aL-HMQVM 'aShUr BChUrThY LShKN 'aTh-ShMY ShM.     and ye have turned back unto Me, and kept My commands, and done them -- if your outcast is in the end of the heavens, thence I gather them, and have brought them in unto the place that I have chosen to cause My name to tabernacle there.     et si revertamini ad me et custodiatis mandata mea et faciatis ea etiam si abducti fueritis ad extrema caeli inde congregabo vos et inducam in locum quem elegi ut habitaret nomen meum ibi
 
10.    "Now these are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power, and by your strong hand.     Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand.     והם  עבדיך  ועמך 
אשר  פדית  בכחך
הגדול  ובידך
החזקה׃
    VHM 'yBDYK V'yMK 'aShUr PhDYTh BKChK HGDVL VBYDK HChZQH.     And they are Thy servants, and Thy people, whom Thou hast ransomed by Thy great power, and by Thy strong hand.     et ipsi servi tui et populus tuus quos redemisti in fortitudine tua magna et in manu tua valida
 
11.    Lord{The word translated "Lord" is "Adonai."}, I beg you, let your ear be attentive now to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who delight to fear your name; and please prosper your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man." Now I was cup bearer to the king.     O LORD, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king's cupbearer.     אנא  אדני  תהי  נא 
אזנך־קשבת  אל־תפלת
עבדך  ואל־תפלת
עבדיך  החפצים
ליראה  את־שמך
והצליחה־נא  לעבדך
היום  ותנהו  לרחמים
לפני  האיש  הזה
ואני  הייתי  משקה
למלך׃
    'aN'a 'aDNY ThHY N'a 'aZNK-QShBTh 'aL-ThPhLTh 'yBDK V'aL-ThPhLTh 'yBDYK HChPhTShYM LYUr'aH 'aTh-ShMK VHTShLYChH-N'a L'yBDK HYVM VThNHV LUrChMYM LPhNY H'aYSh HZH V'aNY HYYThY MShQH LMLK.     `I beseech Thee, O Lord, let, I pray Thee, Thine ear be attentive unto the prayer of Thy servant, and unto the prayer of Thy servants, those delighting to fear Thy Name; and give prosperity, I pray Thee, to Thy servant to-day, and give him for mercies before this man;` and I have been butler to the king.     obsecro Domine sit auris tua adtendens ad orationem servi tui et ad orationem servorum tuorum qui volunt timere nomen tuum et dirige servum tuum hodie et da ei misericordiam ante virum hunc ego enim eram pincerna regis
